Why is d1 college sports glorified so hard when u can just work hard and make it over others? (asking as a dual sport ncaa d1 athlete)?

Curious bc everyone glazes it so hard in America… really not that hard to get if u work hard😭

Nobody really gives a shit about college sports other than football and basketball. If it’s not one of those two that you play, it’s really not that impressive. Even then, odds are you’re a benchwarmer who never gets real playtime. Only the top people are admired
LikeLexi@reddit
Eh people who love the sport care, but that’s def not the general population. Also which sports seem impressive/are cared about vary a lot by school (from a fan perspective).
AgapeAnus@reddit
Not everyone can just work hard enough to make it in D1. I mean yeah you're not wrong a lot more people could make it than would ever assume they could if they just put in the effort and had the discipline to make the sacrifices necessary to get there, but to just say anyone could make it is a bit ignant.
I played OT at a D1 program. You ain't making that position unless you're a brick shithouse of a human being, same way my big ass ain't never gonna hack it at CB. You're not making the track team unless you're big deal holy shit fast, so on and so forth. It's a "big deal" because D1 (and honestly D1-AA and even D2 in a lot of cases) is the point at which you have to possess at least some physical gifts on top of working your ass off to do it.
treymata@reddit
No matter how much I lift and get strong my average height slow ass isn’t making it in any d1 or d2 sport, d3 is achievable for anyone who works hard imo
AgapeAnus@reddit
Even D3 can get pretty competitive in some instances. Guys have made it to the NFL from that level although it's obviously rarer than going from D1. The point is college athletics in general is the point at which you start reaching the upper if not highest levels of amateur competition, if not arguably the lower levels of professional competition, and it goes from being something almost anybody can participate in to something where you have to be physically gifted and then work your ass off on top of that to even be there let alone start or be successful.
treymata@reddit
I was a basketball manager for a d2 school and we scrimmaged a p4 d1 school and I remembered being on the same court as them during lay ups just seeing them dunk the ball with ease. Just different worlds athletically.
Tight_Set3317@reddit
I guess some people got physical skills, while others got intelligence.
But I don't go walking around asking why someone with an IQ of 100 (or 110 or 120 or 130 or...) doesn't just try harder to keep up with me. (Of course, they wouldn't understand my joke. Thats just for a few people.)
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
U can work hard to be physical idiot
Known_Chapter_2286@reddit
Why are doctors glorified so hard when u can just work hard and make it over others? (asking as a dual degree ncaa d1 university attending student)?
AmazingRefrigerator4@reddit
Its not just hard work. Its genetics and talent you are born with also. If uou really are a 2 sport D1 athlete then you are taking your gift for granted.
True-Selection-6437@reddit
I never met another D1 athlete that didn’t work hard to get where they were at, most of my teammates planned and worked/trained for that for years. The only disadvantage I can legitimately think of is playing for a small ass high school team that gets no scouts or recognition
AmazingRefrigerator4@reddit
I never said they dont work hard. Im saying the hard work is on top of some natural born athleticism.
I worked hard in HS. Lifted all the time. Played multiple sports. No amount of additional work would have made me good enough for D1. I was too small, and not D1 athletic.
If OP had said there are lots of people out there who COULD be D1 athletes if they put in more work...I would agree. When they say ANYONE could be a D1 athlete...thats bullshit. Its the same bullshit as when Elon says anyone can be a billionaire if they "just work harder". Its bullshit. Not everyone can do anything.
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
I did get it by hard work dumbass… there’s no “gifts” here just work hard lol not a single person on both sides of the family ever played high school sports…
hainesphillipsdres@reddit
What sport do you play?
AmazingRefrigerator4@reddit
Well I know at least one D1 athlete I wont be "glazing" over. Fuck your attitude.
Enjoy your glory days and lets see you washed up in 10 years wondering where you went wrong.
biggcb@reddit
What are your two sports?
The_Permanent@reddit
So you're not proud of making the team? Probably should just give your spots up if you don't care that much about it. Someone else will.
Sounds like you got there and it's not giving you the sense of accomplishment you were hoping for.
Hopefully coach sees this post and relieves you from the team if it's not what you're looking for.
hainesphillipsdres@reddit
Theres a huge spread of talent in d1 depending on the sport and the program In general even if someone got there on hard work alone it’s still considered impressive. I know plenty of d1 athletes that worked hard and had average talent and got there. You’ll never win an ncaa medal or make the Olympics or go pro without significant god given talent though (as well as dedication).
FunImprovement166@reddit
Do you think all the people not playing D1 football are just not working hard enough?
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
I mean I kinda meant it applying to all sports but yes if u really wanted it u could get it bro people just make excuses about genetics and quit in everything😂
emmasdad01@reddit
I should have just worked harder to be 6’5”
notthebestusername12@reddit
Yeah, insane take by OP.
Clearly genetics are a huge aspect of being a D1 athlete
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
I'd do anything for an extra inch or two.....of height. Yeah. Definitely height.
FunImprovement166@reddit
You would be if you quit making excuses
TSells31@reddit
Sure, you can make it to D1 college level with an insane work ethic (if you don’t have the physical gifts), but being a low-mid end D1 college athlete is pretty useless. Unless you’ve got the goods to go pro, what good does it do you? Unless we are talking absolute top tier basketball and football talent with the NIL money, it just gets your school paid for. And there are many easier routes to that outcome.
You can’t just make it to the NFL, NBA, MLB, Olympics, etc with hard work if you don’t have the physical gifts. So unless you just love playing the sport enough to work that hard for four more years of it, then it’s pretty pointless.
shammy_dammy@reddit
Oh, so I could 'really want' that undiagnosed heart defect away.
Perfect_Storm_425@reddit
“We coulda won state if coach put me in!!!”
FunImprovement166@reddit
I disagree but thanks for your perspective
notthebestusername12@reddit
D1 athletes are a product of genetics and hard work.
If you don’t have the genetics, hard work won’t get you there.
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
Yall always got ur genetics excuses again😂I get it for something where u needa be tall like basketball but almost everything else is hard work stop complaining pussy
notthebestusername12@reddit
No complaints here. I’m very happy with my life.
Tell me the difference between a Tom Brady and Aaron Murray.
Tell me the difference between a really good, hard working high school athlete who didn’t get a D1 scholarship, and a really good, hard working D1 athlete.
False-Cookie3379@reddit
I definitely didn’t clock this guy as a scholar. What are your plans after college? Car dealership salesman? Middle school history teacher? Elementary PE teacher?
8696David@reddit
Is your question “why are athletes celebrated for working hard to reach the top of their field?”
Weird question.
Vespasian79@reddit
Lame ass humble brag post lol
College sports are fun to watch for most people.
Also the idea of “work hard and make it over others” is flawed somewhat but …. Isn’t “glorying” people who work hard better then people who are born in to something?
This whole post is dumb lol
OhThrowed@reddit
Humble brag from someone neglecting the student half of student-athlete.
Vespasian79@reddit
Curious to see what their sports are lol
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
Not really nigga just work hard and it can be u
Vespasian79@reddit
Alright work hard and get to a natty and report back to me
TSells31@reddit
Definitely not the top of their field in most sports. Not really saying this to correct you so much as to knock OP down a notch lol.
Penguins_in_Sweaters@reddit
What sport do you play?
Almond_Brother@reddit
By that same logic, it's really not that hard to become a professional player either. You just need to put in the work.
BeautifulDiscount422@reddit
Why is if "glorified"? An element of it is that you're more visible and it increases the chances of going pro. Can you work hard and be better than a D1 athlete? Yes. People mature at different rates and not every 18/19 year old is fully matured physically or mentally so it's not like it's "game over" if you didn't go D1 out of high school.

Bodine12@reddit
Just wondering if you’ve ever opened one of those books you’re assigned in college.
True-Selection-6437@reddit
I played D1 football. Gave up after a year because that shit was so over cooked. Went down to d2 and actually had fun and enjoyed the game again. Never wanted to go pro, only wanted a good enough scholarship to get though college for a degree
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
good shit bro someone here who knows how to work hard instead of crying about genetics
Adorable-East-2276@reddit
Your question suggests you’re 20, your writing suggests you’re 12. Maybe spend more time in class
Asleep-Assistant-269@reddit
No idea what the question or point is here??
allflanneleverything@reddit
Totally agree. I really wanted to play D1 basketball, so I willed myself to go from 5’6” to 6’8”. Idk why others can’t do this…
Artartbobart1@reddit
This question phrasing suggests you’re not in college.
RedneckBorealis@reddit
Because glorifying the effects of a fair bit of hard work and a healthy helping of the genetic lottery is probably the single most dominant American cultural trait?
OhThrowed@reddit
Its fun.
Due-Shame-5818@reddit (OP)
I was talking about making it rather than just sitting there glazing it nigga
OhThrowed@reddit
What'd you call me?

Why are any athletes "glazed."
