Uneducated karens in my community dont know the equivalent of a legal electric bicycle vs a unregistered illegal e motorcycle and assumes they are the same wasting county resources daily!

Just so we're all aware: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 e-bikes are legal in Texas. They are not the same thing as the unregistered electric motorcycles that some kids are riding around at 50–60 mph, pulling wheelies through traffic, ignoring traffic signs, and riding recklessly.
What I don't understand is why so many people on Nextdoor and local Facebook groups keep spreading false information by claiming that "e-bikes are illegal" or that they "should be illegal." In many cases, the incidents they're referring to involve what are essentially electric motorcycles, yet they blame all e-bikes instead.
It has gotten to the point where every post about reckless riders quickly turns into attacks on all e-bike users. A year ago, I might have seen one post a week. Now it feels like there are five or six posts every week—sometimes multiple posts in a single day—repeating the same misinformation.
I ride a legal Class 3 e-bike. I wear a helmet, stop at stop signs, use hand signals, obey traffic laws, and ride within the bike's legal capabilities. Despite that, I've had people honk at me, record me with their phones, yell at me, and assume I'm doing something illegal simply because my bike has a motor.
Honestly, it's becoming exhausting. I used to enjoy riding without a second thought, but now it feels like some people are actively looking for a reason to accuse e-bike riders of wrongdoing. No one should have to worry that a stranger who doesn't understand the law will falsely claim they were riding recklessly when they were simply commuting, exercising, or running errands.
If we're going to discuss the problem, let's at least be accurate about what the problem actually is. Legal Class 1–3 e-bikes are not the same thing as high-powered, unregistered electric motorcycles. Lumping them together helps nobody. It spreads misinformation, creates unnecessary hostility, and unfairly targets people who are riding legally and responsibly.
Hold reckless riders accountable. Enforce existing laws. But please stop treating every e-bike rider as if they're part of the problem

Anytime something happens on one of the emotos the news just calls it an “e-bike.” Idk its the same situation where old non-tech people don’t understand technology but still insist on speaking on things they have no experience with
The_Grungeican@reddit
shit with my parent's generation, all video games are Nintendos, altered pics on the internet are Photoshop'd, and all the boner pills are Viagra.
so good luck getting those fuckers to make distinctions between e-bikes and e-motos. if they care enough to look at it, they'll still see a crank and call it a e-bike or a e-moped.
what's funny is how many people even in this sub rush to call them illegal. i got news for you, they're getting them off sites like Amazon. they're legal to own, and legal to ride. what's not legal is to ride them on the streets. same as any other dirt bike.
in my state the distinction is made at 50cc engine size. anything less than that doesn't require a license. you're not supposed to have it out on main roads in traffic and such (which is the same problem with the e-motos), but a person riding a gas powered bike or scooter with an engine size of 49cc or less can be legal, regardless of a tag or a license.
states have been slow to regulate all this shit, and in the city it'd probably be hard to enforce just due to the sheer numbers of people doing it. out in the country? i bet most of those cops give exactly the same amount of shits they would a 125-250cc dirt bike or 4-wheeler.
hezuschristos@reddit
Which state? Usually moped is “up to 50cc” but I certainly haven’t looked everywhere. But up to 50cc would mean everything at or below is a moped, everything above is a motorcycle.
The_Grungeican@reddit
TN.
it has been a very long time since i had to read the Driver's Handbook, so it's possible that it changed. but that was the law when i got my license. i've not heard of any sort of change in the years since.
celeste_ferret@reddit
Doesn't help that a subreddit named "ebikes" welcomes anything from legal ebikes up to full fledged e-motorcycles and beyond.
unseenmover@reddit
they dont care enough to inform themselves of anything they believe is true..
hockeymaskbob@reddit
But they do care enough to complain at city council meetings to get dumb laws passed
BoringBob84@reddit
Imagine being at that city council meeting. The public is outraged due to conflicts and injuries from e-motos. They are demanding that the city council "do something."
The city council floats some ideas - stronger enforcement, confiscation, registration, inspections, age limits, more class restrictions, etc. A few ebike riders in the crowd shoot down every one of these ideas, while providing no better solutions and dismissing the concerns of the general public as unreasonable (as we see in this sub).
Out of frustration, the city council stops trying to make the distinction and bans them all.
unseenmover@reddit
and sound like idiots doing so..
the cities and other wise pass laws to make things illegal to protect themselves from liability (being sued) by actions that are the fault of the user of public roads, MUTs sidewalks and the like...
Chemical_Celery8031@reddit
Ebike laws kind of mirror gun laws. The problems are coming from stuff that is already illegal, and its not working - so they make more stuff illegal. And the people causing the problem already didn't care - and won't care now.
unseenmover@reddit
Its from instances where someone has done bodily or physical harm to a citizen or public/private property by riding something illegal

Houstonian here who has been riding a fat tire ebike(since 2020)WAY BEFORE Amazon and Temu sold them. I agree with this issue. I am a towering 6' 7" 230lbs guy. My fatty is supposed to reach 28mph, but doesn't due to my size. I always respect biking rules, stop at signs, lights, and even use aftermarket turn signals as well as hand signals. Meanwhile, there is an unbelievable amount of the "Never Been Told No" generation out there ruining it for the rest of us. E-motos are a big problem for sure(Surron style electric dirt bikes), but what I see daily are these rail-thin kids on adult sized fat tire ebikes that literally zoom past me that have been jailbroken to surpass the 28mph limit. They seem to be blinded by any road rules or basic understanding of biking laws. I get that most have a 2nd grade reading comprehension, but the parents are literally too self absorbed to take the time to teach their offspring about accountability and consequences. Meanwhile, when an accident happens, they are usually first in line to play the litigious card. Houston is now in the process(like so many other cities)of banning E-bikes in certain areas. I also agree that the Karen's out there have zero understanding of what an Ebike actually is. Ironically, these are usually the same ones who knowingly break the distracted driving law when they are behind the wheel, but that is another story for another page.
breakerfallen@reddit
Our local Karens and Kens outlawed class 3 e-bikes on multi use paths, trails, and sidewalks because they don’t like kids riding illegal mopeds without helmets. I get yelled at constantly for being in the road on my class 3. The ignorance is astounding.
BoringBob84@reddit
Class 3 ebikes were never legal here in pedestrian spaces (e.g., multi use paths, trails, and sidewalks). Class 3 ebikes are only allowed on roads and on bike lanes next to roads. 28 mph / 45 kph is far too fast to be safe among pedestrians on paths that were designed for much slower speeds.
QuellishQuellish@reddit
No one that isn't specifically interested and into e-bikes of some kind will know anything about the distinctions between classes. I don't know what the solution is but expecting normal people to know or care is unrealistic.
SnuffyMcfluff@reddit
Here’s the thing. They don’t know the difference and they will never know the difference. And they don’t care about the difference.
We are going to get broad bans if the industry doesn’t stop selling E-Moto cosplaying class 2’s. We need to work with our legislators to get in front of this. We need sane legislation that eliminates fixed seats and non functional pedals from the market. This will eliminate a ton of problems, allow for easier enforcement by police and reduce danger to dumb kids with dumb parents.
Otherwise we are all on the chopping block.
Abe677@reddit
A few ruin things for the rest. Motorcycles. Squat pickup trucks. There's a list. Teens doing teen stuff. Boomers yelling "get off my lawn". What you see is nothing new, except for social media exposure.
TJBurkeSalad@reddit
There is a little more to it than that. Unfortunately these covid brained Karen’s drive 4,500lb killing machines, and our style of sprawling urban development has made it next to impossible to enforce any form of transportation that is not a car.
AskMeHowToLose@reddit
Excuse me - Covid brained? What kind of brain do you have? And please don’t tell me that you drink raw milk and won’t vaccinate your children.
TJBurkeSalad@reddit
I was referring to the fake news worshipping chronic Facebook users. Covid brain, as in sick brain that coincidentally coincided with quarantine.
AskMeHowToLose@reddit
It’s difficult to not read this as Covid denial - and not as if the person has brain fog from Covid. Honestly what the fuck are you saying? Coincidently coincided with Covid? The quarantine was not a coincidence - it was correlated with it.
Just in case you are denying covid - the covid 19 pandemic was real.
AskMeHowToLose@reddit
Hmm
SVGLingo@reddit
The reason they are mad is because it has a motor yet it’s still slower than the rate of traffic and causes blocks. I’ve seen cyclist with bigger sprockets do some insane flybys while I’m trying to keep up full throttle. Seeing both communities as well Emotos are treated like dirtbike riders where they understand the speed and wanting to have fun long as it’s not stupid. A lot of class 3 riders should have a high speed mid drive or a 6kw and up hub just because if it’s for commuting you need to handle everything. Until more people with the freego, the g300, the onyx RCR (E-bikes with “illegal” power) start doing daily commuting everyone then E-bikes in general won’t be recognized as a great switch for a daily.
aleutiantis@reddit
As transportation any ebike or emoto is fine when used properly.
Teens endangering strollers, 2 year olds at pump tracks, not acceptable.
celeste_ferret@reddit
Emotos would be great if people were using street legal ones that are registered and insured.
aleutiantis@reddit
100% agree
NeighborhoodJust1197@reddit
A big win would be if they classified e-bikes used for delivery services as commercial vehicles. Riders should be required to carry a motorcycle license, insurance, and comply with strict equipment requirements, such as proper lighting, reflective markings, and other safety standards similar to those required for motorcycles.
In the tri-state area, at least, regulating e-bikes used for commerce would go a long way toward improving the reputation of e-bikes overall.

I paid the $29 to get a Moped plate for mine. These are so rare in California that everybody including Police just think I have a Motorcycle and treat me accordingly.
Conscious-Salt-4836@reddit
Lots of people wouldn’t know an e-bike from the uptown bus. An education program by National Safety Council and ebike dealers may help. Also Rails to Trails conservancy and other bicycling groups could help spread the word.
HistorianAlert9986@reddit
Stay off Facebook and next-door…. Doesn’t matter what laws come down they won’t be enforced for regular folks that ride their bikes with some common decency. They’re making laws like they did in New Jersey, but they’re not being enforced except for the teenagers doing stupid stuff and riding emotos recklessly
16gkid@reddit
What bike do you ride?
