Hawaii, California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts are up there. They're "may issue" states where permits are either nearly impossible to obtain for civilians or require demonstrating specific justification beyond general self-defense.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
I believe...it's time to vote these people out.. if I can't carry..I have a knife a lock in the sock
CBR929_Guy@reddit
I live in NYC. I would say NYC is one of the worst places. A several month wait for the permit, mandatory 18 hour class, 4 references.
Then once you have your carry permit, you cannot carry on public transportation, in parks, in Times Square, etc.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
So what political party is to blame...D or R or both
atsinged@reddit
It's Ds doing all the bans now, it's been Rs loosening or getting rid of regulations where that has happened.
If you want to keep your guns, vote R.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
I agree
Signal_Membership268@reddit
And then eventually you won’t have to vote at all.
Stuuble@reddit
I’m not bothered by a mandatory class at all, as long as it’s free why the fuck not
Ungard@reddit
Do you think the average career criminal took a class before carrying a gun?
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Nope...they like that we citizens can't carry
Stuuble@reddit
Nope, but people will be better equipped to deal with those people if they have taken course to help them understand their weapon and their rights
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
They get u one way or another...guess only the police and criminals can carry
tvan184@reddit
Like always, depending on the state.
In Texas (and other states) you can walk into a store and in a few minutes walk out with a legally purchased handgun. You can then go out to your vehicle and strap the handgun to an open carry holster and walk around in public with no license required.
shit_poster9000@reddit
Texas’s Constitutional Carry also allows for unlicensed concealed carry, just have to be mindful of places that ban unlicensed carry, otherwise it’s functionally the same.
Still a good idea to get a CCL for its other benefits, it looks good to a jury and outright replaces the need for a background check on firearm purchases.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
I like that state

Ny is the worst because you need a permit to even touch a pistol
Rodeo9@reddit
Mass you need a permit to even touch a gun.

I'm in upstate NY(not the city) and I just received my permit this month. It was over 14 months wait time. I needed 4 references to sign my application, have it notorized at a bank, and spend $400 on a 18 hour course that took up the entire weekend after working a 48 hour workweek...
WowBruhReborn@reddit
48 hour work week? Do you work part time or something, cupcake? ^/s
Karl_Doomhammer@reddit
I grew up in Western NY. I remember when my dad got his permit, the sheriff came over and did an in-person interview, then talked to four of our neighbors about my dad, came back and told my dad what they said, interviewed is three kids about what we thought about our dad, then went and talked to all the references.
I was probably 15 and remember thinking this felt a little extreme. There was no course but It did take months of waiting.
Similarly, one of my dad's friends died suddenly one morning. The state police showed up before the coroner to confiscate his pistols because his wife didn't have a pistol permit.
joelfarris@reddit
Now there's a gut-wrenching life twist that I hadn't thought of before. How many thousands of dollars of value can the state just steal from you on the day your spouse has suddenly died, because you don't have one of their pretty little certificates?
Karl_Doomhammer@reddit
That day, we all went and started the process for permits and got my dad's pistols all put on our permits.
... which is a secondary problem: someone with a permit can't come hold them either because the pistol has to be on your permit for you to possess it. So like that morning, my dad wouldn't have been able to go pick them up since he had a permit because those specific pistols were not tied to his permit etc.
RickySlayer9@reddit
I feel like California with all its issues used to be way down towards the bottom of the trash gutter and now is actually fairly ok. It took me about a month to get my permit from time of training, which isn’t terrible.
I hate that I have to get a permit but I guess that’s how it is
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
You need a gun in calif
RickySlayer9@reddit
To get a concealed carry permit? I mean…yes…you do.
California has a lot of dumb rules, and to be clear, I hate them. But this one doesn’t seem terribly illogical at least. They have a lot of illogical rules, but “you must own and show proficiency with a gun in order to carry around town” is at a minimum the least illogical part of the whole process.
To be clear none of that should be a requirement to own, or carry a gun. But at least I can look at the requirements and say “this is a rational actor with a difference of opinion”
Like Canada. I hate Canada, but their gun laws make 10x more sense than Californias. 95+% of all homicides, mass shootings etc all take place with a hand gun, not a long gun or an “assault weapon”
California does have the handgun roster, which, while absolutely stupid, is really not a prohibition on guns commonly used in crimes, like the Glock 17,19,22 etc. but it’s FAR more restrictive on assault weapons.
Canada doesn’t really care much about long guns, and only cares about hand guns, which in fairness ARE what are used in crimes.
Now yes all gun laws are A) unconstitutional and B) in canadas case, a stupid impedence on the rights of normal Canadians, but at least I can look at that and say “they did something that at least makes some sense…”

Unless things have changed in New Jersey makes you literally put your name in the newspaper
Hold_Left_Edge@reddit
How on earth has that not been challenged as a public shaming technique to discourage people?!
Laser-Blaster-123@reddit
Publishing lists of visitors to a gentlemans club could be public shaming but publishing a list of people who submit applications to the government is not public shaming, at all.
Laser-Blaster-123@reddit
That said NJ ccw records are protected records according to law and individuals info cant be published.
Hold_Left_Edge@reddit
Boot lick mentality.
Laser-Blaster-123@reddit
Stating a fact isnt boot licking nor does it mean i agree with it.
Laser-Blaster-123@reddit
I am saying from a legal aspect that there would be no case for public shaming.
Might fall under another thing but not public shaming.
shit_poster9000@reddit
It’s still “hey here’s a guy who did something legal, but something a lot of people wouldn’t like, here’s his name and a bunch of identifiable info in case you want to harass him”

ASUMicroGrad@reddit
Massachusetts is up there
capecodcaper@reddit
Mass is bad but I wouldn't put it near how bad some others on the list are
I live in NH but my family has a vacation house on the cape... So they granted me a resident license to possess a machine gun. It was just the class that was the pain in the ass. I mean that and the fact that the chief grilled me for no reason. The class had no shooting and was like an hour lol.
But none of the references, interrogations.
Just the class, wait and the fact that mass is terrible with guns in general
TyburnCross@reddit
Oregon is super easy to get the license… if you live in the state or connecting states.
They recognize no other states, which is kind of dickish.
tvan184@reddit
To get the permit/license or the restrictions?
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Both
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
I heard NY,MD,CA were difficult
GuaranteeGreedy6997@reddit
If you are trying to get a MD permit you are better off just moving to VA and getting theirs. It’s a headache but still better than NY.
And that’s not even considered a NY permit isn’t valid in NYC unless you get special permission.
ShoopdaYoop@reddit
Is a VA permit recognized in MD?
GuaranteeGreedy6997@reddit
No not at all. I’m saying move to VA and never go into MD. There’s no reason to ever go there
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
I must travel thru MD from Pa to get to DC. Gun is in the rear trunk, and ammo in glove.
ShoopdaYoop@reddit
100% US 522/I-70 crosses the narrowest part And even that part sucks
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Whoa, why does NYC require special permissions. I could use it to kill the big ass rats..
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Are u serious
BluesFan43@reddit
MD isn't hard. More $$ than it could be.
You get your license pretty quickly for a bad state. No interview BS, etc.
The 16 hour class is tedious.
8 hours more after 2 years.
Then 3 year renewal
ShoopdaYoop@reddit
There is no reciprocity for MD with any other state(s) permit, correct?
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Yes, that is what I heard, same a NY
tvan184@reddit
Texas has constitutional carry open or concealed but has a handgun license which offers some benefits such as reciprocity with certain states.
The class is 4-6 hours and can be taken online. On renewal the license is $40 for 5 years or $8 a year. For military veterans it is $25 for 5 years.
Cowboysfan95@reddit
You still have to do the shooting portion in person
MarvinHeemeyersTank@reddit
I can't shoot online?
Cowboysfan95@reddit
It wouldn’t surprise me if you could in this day and age.
tvan184@reddit
The range is required for the original license but not for renewal.
tubadude2@reddit
MD has an excellent website and the renewal process is actually very easy apart from the training requirement. Even getting set up with them as an instructor was quick and easy.
Beats the hell out of WV where I have to schedule an appointment a month in advance at an inconvenient time to go to my sheriff’s office and pay by cash.
tvan184@reddit
Geez… you would think the opposite would be true with WV being more gun friendly to obtain a license/permit. Sometimes truth may seem stranger than fiction.
tubadude2@reddit
Would be nice.
My WV drivers license and MD CCW were both renewed a month ago online, but I have to take a few hours off work tomorrow because my sheriff only processes applications Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and between something like 9-3. At least I won’t have to do it again for five years.
Fishhb2020@reddit
Ca is not hard but can be expensive and a little time consuming. All of it is dependent on the issuing authority.
SakanaToDoubutsu@reddit
I've got the NYC permit and it isn't that difficult.

tvan184@reddit
For restrictions you have Hawaii, California, NJ, Maryland and I believe NY have versions of the Vampire laws…. that will hopefully be struck down by the Supreme Court in a week or two.
Significant-Pen-2274@reddit
What’s a Vampire law?
ILikeScrapple@reddit
Just like a vampire can't enter your home without an invite, a CCL holder can't enter any private home or business without permission.
tvan184@reddit
Yep.
Like in Hawaii, they had to issue licenses after NYSRPA v. Bruen so they passed a law that basically says, once you leave your property, you can only drive in the public street or you are committing a felony. You would need prior approval to enter any property or you would be committing a felony.
If you leave your home with a handgun under a Hawaii license and drive around your city, you can never leave the roadway. If you decide you need gasoline on the way home, the moment you pulled into a store parking lot to get gas, you have committed a felony unless you called ahead and got prior permission from the manager. So Hawaii (and a couple of others) claim that they have complied with the Supreme Court decision in Bruen by issuing a license, but basically it’s null and void because you could never be anywhere except on your own property or a public roadway.
The oral arguments were a few weeks ago and by the questioning, it sounds like those vampire laws (I need your permission to enter) are going to be struck and soon. I am sure that those states have the next scheme cooking.
Significant-Pen-2274@reddit
Ah gotcha. Thanks

https://ammo.com/articles/worst-states-for-gun-owners
lordkickass@reddit
California it varies between no wait to 2 years depending on your location, some require a psych exam, live scan and mandatory classes...
And we can't carry in a many places...
Ungard@reddit
Meanwhile, a criminal just carries a pistol wherever and however he likes, and when he gets arrested for commiting a violent crime, he'll likely just get offered a plea deal that amounts to a slap on the wrist and be back out commiting more crimes. Sometimes I think criminals are more patriotic than your average gun owner because they disregard all gun laws and do wharever they want. But that's the thing, a criminal has nothing to lose, while a law abiding citizen has everything to lose. So, law abiding citizens are forced to kiss the ring to exercise their natural right to self defense, while the criminal class have free reign to brutalize society.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
You spoke the absolute truth
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
What is happening in our country.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Great info...I carry everywhere 357 4 inch with 110 gr. My only issue is when I go to a theater production, I must leave it at home since I don't chance leaving it in my car.
EzPup@reddit
It’s dumb but have you considered getting a big bike U-lock and just putting it through the frame with the cylinder open and locking it under your seat?
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
That's smart...the gears are clicking
tvan184@reddit
Probably a smart move of leaving it at home if not allowed to carry inside.
Have you looked say the under seat safes for vehicles?
ShoopdaYoop@reddit
What do you think about the Kwick Strike?
tvan184@reddit
The Kwick Strike certainly has its place. It’s kind of pricey though.
Certainly its biggest feature is that it’s a quick draw holster for a vehicle while driving. Unlike the under dash magnets, it is actually somewhat secure if you attach the cable under the seat.
There are cheaper options for under the seat safes with basically the same cable security but they aren’t anywhere near quick draw capable.
It depends on what a person intends to use it for and how much they are willing to pay. The KS seems like a great option for people like me who carry in appendix position but don’t want it sticking it in your gut while driving. I carried my appendix while driving and it doesn’t bother me, but I can see where the KS wo greatly benefit some people.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
Still looking
1Crusty_Old_Man@reddit
Hawaii, it took SCOTUS to get them to even issue permits.
mikeg5417@reddit
Even though NJ thechnically had "may issue" permits prior to Bruen, it was almost impossible to obtain due to the requirement that applicants express a "need".
After Bruen, they were forced to go to a "shall issue" standard. With the inclusion of the mandatory CCW class, the cost of a permit is around $400. Depending on your local police department, the time it takes to maintain one can be very long (my local OD is currently very pro 2A and the process only took me a few weeks, but I still hear horror stories from other jurisdictions).
That is just to obtain one. The other roadblocks put up by the legislature make things worse.
Specialist-Ask-2150@reddit (OP)
There are still a number of states that have yet to communicate
H3nCh4l1f390@reddit
Well I got denied in Massachusetts. Their gun laws are ridiculous. should also note, I have 0 record, served active duty army and went to Iraq for this country. Had letters of recommendation from active officers on the PD and took the NRA safety course and hunters safety course. The police chief shot me down for “suitability” I guess the thought of a trained veteran with a gun scared her. Took it to court or at least tried to and got shot down again citing “ you don’t need one” “your not a victim of a crime or harassment”
