Just watched a Delta CRJ taxiing from the terminal with a compartment still open.

This was at JFK. I don’t work the ramp for delta but we managed to flag down the pilots attention while they were holding short of the taxiway.
Is JFKIAT the correct information relay or should we have immediately called Port Authority? Who can get you pilots information the fastest because communicating with hand signals on what the issue was sucks.

While you obviously don't want anything left open, anything critical has an annunciation in the flight deck. You did the right thing but it's also not like they were in a hazardous situation. Although the cover may have not been there when they landed.

We had a lot of doors on the CRJ-900 that weren’t sensed, but yeah they usually weren’t critical.
We were waiting in line for takeoff (at JFK no less) when the AA crew behind us relayed through ground that we had a panel open. We got out of line, taxied back to the ramp, and someone came out to secure the lav service panel.
A couple of times we had the communication panel in the nose left open. You could tell because it would produce a high pitched squeal at certain speeds.
Brambleshire@reddit
Uhg that used to happen to me all the dam time. Like 1/10 they would leave the headset panel open.
Mazer1415@reddit
You were at Comair too?
Brambleshire@reddit
I think they just didn't give a shit everywhere back then 😂
Catsloveairplanes@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I figured it was minor. I assume it’s worst case it’ll get ripped off and get replaced

Reminds me when ramp crew wouldn't close the panel cover for the headset jacks. Get to hear a loud buzzing noise all the way back to base.

Just call ground on the radio - if not able ForeFlight and other sources have the phone number to tower. Even non critical doors can cause damage- nobody will complain about a safety call like that.
AIRdomination@reddit
There are no publicly published tower phone numbers.
randombrain@reddit
https://acukwik.com has been dead-on accurate in my survey, although it's a survey with only a few samples.
TuckNT340@reddit
Same. It takes about 3 second to find that 718 number.
funnynoises@reddit
Just curious, was this door on the right side of the nose? How did you flag down the pilots attention?
Catsloveairplanes@reddit (OP)
It was hanging down from the belly near the tail. I think it was where they connect the Air conditioning. A white disc hanging by a chain.
We just flagged it down with our arms making an X, pilots looked confused since we were pointing at something they couldn’t see but eventually, he got the hint and someone came out. One of the fuel truck guys went to the back to close it, but the Delta guys still came out for a double check.
PowderMonkey1874@reddit
Yep that’s the low pressure air connection for air conditioning at the gate.
No_The_White_Phone@reddit
All panels are designed so the natural slipstream of relative wind will hold them shut if the aircraft takes off with them inadvertently left unlatched.
hawker1172@reddit
Not if the cap is dangling down by the chain
StupidlyGenious@reddit
I'm currently stripping the fuse of paint on a CR9 because that exact cover had been left open (in flight or ground I actually don't know) and it dented the area and it's a no damage allowed.
icanfly_impilot@reddit
lol the number of times they thing is left open is comical
Left_Instruction_897@reddit
I stopped a Delta DC-9 from departing CHA with an aft cargo compartment open as a ramp agent in the mid 70’s. They were #1 getting ready to take the active.
Ok-Money2811@reddit
Probably the com door…did a 2 hr flight with that door unlatched/open when I flew the 7. Only reason we knew it wasnt secured was the rampers at the destination told us, no casualties, door was still there.
oranges1cle@reddit
You can hear it whistling the entire flight I’ve had it happen like 5 times it’s very annoying.
randombrain@reddit
I don't work there but I would say immediately call port authority and have them call the tower.
Unless you have an ATC radio and can call the ground frequency directly? But from context it seems like you don't.
