What movie/tv show captures your high school experience best?

Superbad, Can’t Hardly Wait, and Freaks and Geeks both came to mind first for me, but I’m curious as to what everyone else here thinks
coyote_of_the_month@reddit
Totally wrong generation, but the first season of Euphoria.
ashe3@reddit
Napoleon Dynamite. Hits way too close to home.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Did your bike do sweet jumps?
ashe3@reddit
I caught like, 3 feet of air once.
Appropriate-Neck-585@reddit
Did you have a bunch of different skills?
Appropriate-Neck-585@reddit
"The Wood" was a perfect depiction of growing up Black in L.A. in the 80's/early 90's ❤️
ILoveRustyKnives@reddit
Napoleon Dynamite. I grew up in a small town in Wyoming not much smaller than Preston, ID. They captured the vibe perfectly.
kokujinzeta@reddit
Heathers
bedspring76@reddit
I love my dead gay son!
wyc1inc@reddit
21 Jump Street (the movie). Mainly because we literally did have to 1 strap it if we didn't want to be made fun of as dorks.
And there was this 1 weird guy that looked like he was 30 years old that seemingly came out of nowhere. Smooth charismatic guy that got along with the white kids, the Mexican kids, the nerds, the jocks, everyone and would like sit at a different table during lunch every day, which was not something anyone else just did. We all joked he was a narc and I later looked him up and he's literally a police officer to this day!

Fresh off the boat
MaracujaBarracuda@reddit
Hackers, though not quite as dramatic
dukesfeetarecheese@reddit
That movie captures my ninth grade year but not as dramatic
Slytherian101@reddit
It’s a cross between Superbad and Dazed and Confused.
natronmooretron@reddit
Dangerous Minds
Tinyhulk27@reddit
That 70s show.
That 70s show was not only a mirror for some of our adventures but almost an exact replica of my crew in high-school...
The hangout spot basement at the most normal/dorky Erics with his parent's being exact replicas of "Kitty and Red" in personality. The lovable red headed neighbor girl, with the oddball parent's. The most criminal like and poor friend who pretty much lived at Eric's. The "foreign" student with the nickname because nobody can pronounce his full one. The lovable, good-looking idiot who messed thing's up occasionally and constantly hurt himself. The "vista cruiser". The road trips to the big city for concerts. Climbing the watertower to vandalize it. The weed usage obviously,. etc. Etc.
We had a few tweeks...
Our "Kelso" dated our "Donna". Our "Eric" was obsessed with our "Jackie". Our "Hyde" owned the wood paneled Olds station wagon. And our "Fez" was an immigrant instead of a exchange student.
...But if I had taped my high-school crews dad to day life / adventures, and put that shit on YouTube Fox network would probably sue me for copyright infringement or people would think it to be a lost tape of test screenings before they hired better actor's for the show.
three-sense@reddit
F&F1. Not so much “stealing cars and avoiding cops” but the general import tuner and southwest vibe (in AZ not CA). Also Daria and Can’t Hardly Wait
Eziekiel23_20@reddit
F&F ruined car culture.
pleasebequiet@reddit (OP)
I remember seeing Fast and Furious 1 in the theater in high school, one group of frat bro-looking dudes got into a physical fight with another group as the movie started, which was like, a little too on the nose for that film screening lol
Eziekiel23_20@reddit
Cant Hardly Wait does a good job. I need to check out some of these others.
Theres a British show called The Inbetweeners that has a few characters that are EXACTLY like a few of my friends were as well. Spot on and hilarious. HIGHLY recommended.
Not_a_werecat@reddit
Carrie.
But minus the supernatural elements. Just the bullying.
heavyLevy5@reddit
Daria
pleasebequiet@reddit (OP)
Daria for sure. Fmos3!
magsli@reddit
fmos3? Is this a new abbreviation? I really thought I was up to speed
CelticSith@reddit
Technically anything can be an abbreviation today, I mean, IJMTSURN! (I’m just making this shit up right now)
seahawk1977@reddit
Definitely!
Stitchin_Squido@reddit
It me. I was Daria. My sister was Quinn. Even my parents thought it was freaky accurate.
No-Championship-8677@reddit
Ladybird 😂🫠
rainieroadie@reddit
10 things I hate about you was set in my hometown and my wrestling team mates were in it my sophomore year. Still see the twins in the party scenes. Not too realistic as we were definitely talking like we were stars in Superbad.
Hynch@reddit
Superbad mostly was it for me, though the clothing style and frequent electronics usage puts it a good 4-5 years after I graduated.
I_am_Forklift@reddit
Growing up in west Texas it was Varsity Blues
pantheroux@reddit
I’m not even Irish but Derry Girls captured my high school friend group so well.
beatlegirlstl@reddit
I went to an all girl high school and relate to Derry Girls so much.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
It's so, so accurate to what being a teenager in the 90s was like. It reminds me of my friends and the nonsense we got into.
Santos_L_Halper_II@reddit
Friday Night Lights, but with 6-man football and we sucked at it.
Famous_Tumbleweed346@reddit
Freaks and geeks
sgdaughtry@reddit
I would LOVE to binge watch this again. Is it streaming?
C001H4ndPuk3@reddit
It was on Netflix awhile back, but I'm sure it was a temporary license. We watched it with our teenaged kids, and they loved it.
lucidspoon@reddit
Was just thinking how most teen movies and shows were far more over the top than any experience I had, but this Freaks and Geeks was spot on.
fermentedradical@reddit
One of the best shows ever and definitely captured my HS experience
Salty_Yard6414@reddit
Can’t hardly wait for my generation but I saw Dazed and Confused in Highschool and tried to make that as close to mine as possible. Mostly just cutting class and smoking pot and the music.
Eccentric_Manatee@reddit
About 50/50 Moesha and Daria. Wild combo, I know. Lol. But a mix of those two captures it pretty perfectly.

Kids
theRestisConfettii@reddit
Yup.
Kids is the inner city to Can’t Hardly Wait’s suburban life.
probablyatargaryen@reddit
Glad someone was brave enough to say it. I’ve been judged so harshly for mentioning it as an adult. But our circumstances were not our fault
AshDogBucket@reddit
Any of the recent documentaries about evangelical cults.
energetic-landlord@reddit
The first thing I thought of was Varsity Blues. I didn't grow up anywhere near the south, but I did go to school in a small "football" town in the middle of nowhere.
EastTXJosh@reddit
Friday Night Lights.
paperbackstreetcred@reddit
Dazed and Confused
Hammerhandle@reddit
It honestly doesn't really feel that far off. Seemed like it was so different back then, but it really wasn't.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
Came to say this. Cause honestly, it perfectly captured the aimless meandering, hanging out, talking, and a bit of trouble across every friend group I had.
NOLARosarita@reddit
The exact answer I planned to give 👆🏻
Into-the-stream@reddit
With the 70s fashion revival in the 90s, it was still pretty on point
MinivanPops@reddit
Driving around to parties in fields was my whole reason for living
ononono@reddit
Ladybird!
Lcky22@reddit
My so called life, cant hardly wait, and freaks and geeks
59apache01@reddit
Even though it was set almost 20 years prior to my high school years, the characters, their mentality, and the things they got into on That '70s Show was very close to what I experienced.

Same. It went as set a little later, but the feel of it was spot on.

FLCL. It's a perfect time capsule.
KASega@reddit
Ladybird. I’m only a few years older than the director and I went to the other catholic all girls high school in Sacramento (she went to st Francis and I went to Loretto). Also raised by a narcissistic mother figure.
IceSmiley@reddit
Degrassi the Next Generation even though that came out 5 years after I was out
piratejeffwdw@reddit
The girls in Pen15 are in middle school in the years that I was in high school, but they get a LOT of the feelings of those ages very correct

Can’t hardly wait. I felt like I knew versions all of those people in high school.
I like Superbad as a high school movie but it was set too late for me. Cell phones weren’t ubiquitous until I was a couple of years into college.
Significant-Rush-129@reddit
I was going to say exactly this. I did appreciate Superbad though, because I feel like it built on the vibe of CHW, but did it in a less mocking/ridiculing way and seized more on that awkward cringe humor of the time. I think overall it was a better done movie.
PatchworkGirl82@reddit
I had just graduated high school when Ghost World came our (which opens at graduation), and I felt so much like it was personalized for me.

Dazed and Confused by a mile.

detourne@reddit
a mix of superbad and kids...with more weed.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Ironically Beavis and Butthead. Sat around and watched music videos, laughed, and the world around me was just about as dumb.
XFrankXGrimesX@reddit
The somewhat sanitized-by-network Freaks on "Freaks and Geeks" was about right for my group but with more punk, butt-cuts and chain wallets
Door_Number_Four@reddit
Probably a mix of :
Adventureland
Waiting
Dancer, Texas Pop. 81
FarmerMom1943@reddit
I loved Dancer, Texas Pop. 81. I always wonder why no one else ever mentions it.
Door_Number_Four@reddit
It hits small town kids who moved away hard.
bundleton_mcmanus@reddit
My so called life
FarmerMom1943@reddit
Absolutely.
GreenZebra23@reddit
One thing I always appreciate about that show is it captured how the most common feelings in high school are embarrassment and confusion. Not even just emotional confusion, though there's plenty of that, but just genuinely not understanding what's going on most of the time. Everything feels so overwhelming and strange.

None of them. I didn’t attend on account of my mom dying when I was supposed to start. Went first day, had a panic attack, and started self taught schooling from home. I still dream of having to go back to school as the oldest student ever.
