whats exactly in it
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Godamba roti, cabbage, carrots, leeks, onions, green chilies, eggs, chicken/meat, spicy curry gravy, ginger, garlic, curry leaves, chili flakes, pepper, salt.
itsokay_i_googled_it@reddit
I'm adopted from Sri Lanka, but I've never been. I would like to try some of the food. I also googled this but I found a resturang here where I live that serve Sri Lankan dishes.
This was on the menu and some other items that I would like to try.
But ultimately I would like to go to Sri Lanka.

By the way if you grew up in a household that was not eating very spicy food then you should go easy on the spice level. String hoppers and puttu is what they eat for breakfast with egg omelette and other curries. You can try hoppers for dinner if the restaurent has all the options.
itsokay_i_googled_it@reddit
Thanks for the heads up, but I'm pretty used to spicy food. I've been traveling a bit and the closest I've been is India, would presume it's somewhat similar in cuisine?
e9967780@reddit
Spicier, less oily, closer to Kerala and Tamil Nadu cuisines than what you generally get in Indian restaurants which is generic Punjabi food rich is cream, sauces and ghee.
itsokay_i_googled_it@reddit
I've been to Kerala!
e9967780@reddit
Then you are pretty much home, people, food, climate all similar.
itsokay_i_googled_it@reddit
Alright cool! Can't wait to go. But needs a bit of saving up first.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
That's also a good idea. If necessary, I can post a picture of the hopper.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
You should try it, it will be a good experience.
itsokay_i_googled_it@reddit
Yeah, I'm taking my daughter the next time I'm home from work!
sandpaperedanus777@reddit
I hope it's only something popular in Sri Lanka because I'd be ashamed to know I missed this living 20 years in south India.
The description is so much my type of food
Embarrassed-Cause250@reddit
I think it looks delicious- now I have to look it up to see if I like the ingredients! Love Reddit and finding out about foods I never knew about!
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Oh, that's good.
Embarrassed-Cause250@reddit
I saw the recipe and now need to figure out how to get my hands on the leaves! That is something I definitely want to try!! OP how necessary are the leaves to the recipe? Any replacement suggestions?
meowkitty84@reddit
In Australia they sell them in the fresh herb section of the grocery store.
Embarrassed-Cause250@reddit
I am in Puerto Rico, lovely Island, but not a huge variety of veggies are imported, just the proven sellers. Many times, I have to look for substitutions or check Amazon.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
They aren't 100% mandatory! The curry leaves add a great traditional scent, but you can make it without them. For the green parts, just use regular spring onions, cabbage, or chopped leeks which are easy to find anywhere. Don't let the leaves stop you from trying it!
Embarrassed-Cause250@reddit
Thank you!! Am going shopping tomorrow and will definitely get the ingredients!! Thank you!🩷
sreek4r@reddit
Any food that comes wrapped in plastic with condiments in smaller baggies tastes like heaven. Although around my place it comes wrapped in a banana leaf and then packaged in yesterdays newspaper.
retecsin@reddit
This is good for bowl movement. I would eat it without hesitation
tehGoldenNut@reddit
Better presentation and I'd devour that
That_Banned_Hybrid@reddit
Tastes like heaven or puts you in heaven? Ngl I would be willing to try it too
meowkitty84@reddit
I just googled it and want to try. It seems like fried rice but with shredded roti instead of rice? I saw there's a cheese version..
FlatulentSon@reddit
Yes this shit is tasty as fuck, don't be fooled by how it looks.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
You are absolutely right! It’s fried up bits of flat bread (roti) with vegetables, eggs & meat. It is very hot and delicious. "Whenever you get a chance, you have to try it! Cheese is added separately, but this is not added.
Salt_Finger_6863@reddit
I want that for breakfast
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
And I will give😄
Salt_Finger_6863@reddit
I'm starving and want breakfast in bed 😩
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
You found the perfect way to eat.😄
filthysock@reddit
I’ve never seen it like that. It looks so … sweaty
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
LOL, you're not wrong! It gets that shiny, 'sweaty' look because they wrap it up immediately after taking it off a blazing hot griddle.
filthysock@reddit
I’ve only had it fresh in the restaurant Sri Lanka. The more you know!
Shitloaf69@reddit
looks good!
t-m@reddit
Kottu was one of the best things I ate when I travelled in Asia. Sri Lanka is also a beautiful country, I'd love to go back.
theCG25850@reddit
It's this Nutri-loaf?
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Haha, it definitely looks like a spicy, chaotic version of a Nutri-loaf! But trust me, this one actually tastes amazing and is packed with flavor, not punishment
HumongousBelly@reddit
Where can I order this type of flavor block? My autistic neighbor only eats rectangular foods
robotoman@reddit
Do you have any Indian spots near your place? Usually Sri Lankan or South Indian restaurants will carry this.
EvioliteEevee@reddit
It doesn’t stay in that shape, it was probably just taken out of the takeout box.
FireFingers1992@reddit
Depends how much egg you add. Bet if you did two instead of one for a portion it'd glue together quite well.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Yes
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Haha, you can order this in Sri Lanka! It got this perfect rectangular block shape because it was tightly wrapped in a takeout parcel sheet. Once you open it, it holds the shape of the box
AstroError@reddit
It kinda looks like a condensed chow mein. Is it similar?
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
it does look a bit like it visually, but the taste and texture are very different! Chow Mein uses noodles, but this is made with shredded flatbread (roti). Also, it is not dry like Chow Mein, we mix it with a lot of spicy curry broth (gravy), which makes it very rich, moist, and heavy
thechued1@reddit
Looks like it’d send you to heaven too
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Slightly addictive
MrL-B@reddit
I am half awake half asleep thought I was looking at a herbal tea brick.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
It has a different taste.
ffassbinder@reddit
That's the worst Kothu Rotti I have seen so far. Please go to a different vendor. :D
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
Some foods that look bad taste great 😄
PintMower@reddit
I could swim in kothu. Easily in the top 3 of my favourite dishes.
FireFingers1992@reddit
Love Kothu so much. Great dish for using up whatever you have in the fridge as any veg or protein can just be cut up and chucked in.
Substantial_Work8276@reddit (OP)
You are definitely right.
