not a soul on this planet played level 1-4 on super mario 3. you're *so* much better than level 1-4. i mean that 💞
MmmSteaky@reddit
Didn’t you get something good if you got every single coin in it, though?
Gryrok@reddit
Yes, iirc the white mushroom house appears. There's one in each world I think.
ScottClam42@reddit
Wow, i completely forgot about this and never knew it was triggered by something. My 8yo brain thought it was random
AlwaysPepsiNeverCoke@reddit
Same, I thought it just popped up at random 🤯
moonbunnychan@reddit
The white mushroom house is WAY more obscure then that. You have to collect an exact number of coins on specific levels. For 1-4 it's 44 coins and you get a p wing.
Ambitious_Jelly8783@reddit
Wow.... today I learned about the white mushroom... i have a nes mini in the living room.. i think Ill have to go try this.
Chaelomen@reddit
There are going to be a couple of coin boxes you'll want to hit, so keep an eye out or look them up. The later one you can't max out, but you'll need to get as many as possible.
It's also easier if you go in with a tail, or at least big, but that's not mandatory.
seanwdragon1983@reddit
Thought it was the anchor, or was that world 2?
Celticpenguin85@reddit
What did the anchor do?
HistorianJRM85@reddit
it kept the 'koopalings' ships from moving to other parts of the map (parts that you hadn't finished, or were populated by wandering hammer bros.)
Celticpenguin85@reddit
Okay thanks
moonbunnychan@reddit
They alternate. The ones in 1, 3, 5, and 7 was a p wing. 2, 4, and 6 was an anchor.

Did you never pore over Nintendo Power magazine as a youth?
RyogAkari@reddit
I wasn't rich you see...I got my copy of SMB3 at a yard sale along with the other poors.
markuspeloquin@reddit
I got it new, but then I also had just three games. Mario 1, 2, 3. In today's dollars, Mario 3's price was $127. So I get it. If I buy my kids a fucking game costing $127, I'll make them play the shit out of it.
Baked_Potato_732@reddit
I got my daughter breath of the wild in 2018. I’ve list track of how many times she’s beat that game. Probably over 1,000 hours of play time over the last 8 years. Definitely worth the $.07/hour investment.
ouijahead@reddit
I’m assuming she found all the kuroks. Did she like TOTK ? That adds even more hours
Baked_Potato_732@reddit
She’s beat TOTK at least twice. She likes BotW better. I assume she’s found all the Kuroks but not sure. I know she likes to find YouTube videos about glitches and see if she can replicate them.
balding_git@reddit
look at richie rich here! my copy of smb3 would have got sold off when the video store shut down…
withbellson@reddit
Oh, I didn’t subscribe to it or anything, but I bought a copy of the strategy guide off the newsstand.
…someday I’ll need to explain to my kid what a newsstand is.
brainvheart143@reddit
We used to read it at the store and try to remember the codes lmao
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
oh man, we weren't poor, but our parents kept the purse strings TOIGHT. i'll allllways remember the night we went to the local swimming pool and swam our faces off - my sister and me - and on the weirdly long drive home, we pulled into the toysaurus parking lot and dad got out, leaving us in the car, and we were all, "is he really going in there without us wtf?", and when he got back in the car, he swung around to the backseat grinning like a KID with a copy of mario 3 ☺️
AmIYourNeighbor@reddit
First of all, calling toys r us toysaurus is amazing, and you deserve an award for that. And second, there’s nothing better as a parent than surprising your child(ren) with something they’ve wished for
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
toysaurus definitely started as a reading/comprehension thing (cause toys r us didn't make much sense), and it stuck to this day ☺️
No_Custard_6481@reddit
That’s me for chick fil a. I used to call it chicken fillet when I first heard of it.
Op thanks for the reminder. My life kinda sucks but atleast I was great at Mario.
mightysockelf@reddit
It took me a second when I reading it. I was like, "tf is a toysaurus?" I've only ever spoken it and never saw it in print before 😂
Evan_802Vines@reddit
Just read them at the school library. 🤷♂️
el_floppo@reddit
I had a cousin who lived 6 hours away and he always had the latest gaming systems and games. He also had a subscription to Nintendo Power. All the stuff that my family couldn't afford. Going to visit him during the summers were the best.
Cinderhazed15@reddit
My NES and all its games were from ‘that kid’ I didn’t mind second hand, and we helped him buy the next system…

nooooo.....i am from more of a zoobooks family, but i always wanted to! i didn't know about "secrets" until the summer after donkey kong country came out on snes, and the houston post had a whole ass article with allllll of the cheats and secret rooms! we taped it to the side of the tv 😂
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
👀👀👀 in this land specifically? i don't know! i'm almost tempted to try it, but the warship is right there....i dunno 😂

mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
well, i'll be goddamned...i never even knew there was a black and white mushroom house!
the spirit of this dumb post remains though - keep yer head up 💞
Chaelomen@reddit
Well are you aware of the paper ship? If you end a level with the tens digit of your score matching both digits of your coins (so score ...20 and coins 22 and so one), and with an even time, that wandering hammer brother will turn into an airship full of coins.
I believe that trick only works in worlds 1, 3, 5, and 6, but I'm hazy on that part.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
no i had no idea! this silly post has opened up so many new things for me to try to get in my current replay, but this one seems impossible to try for. it has to be luck, for the most part, eh?
Chaelomen@reddit
I think they were aiming for luck, just a thing that pops up sometimes, but it was also on the Nintendo Power. When we saw it the first time, it was just this weird unbelievable thing, that we couldn't be sure wasn't a bug of some kind. Later, one of my brother's friends ran through getting all the p-wings and hidden coins and secret areas, as he had the magazine. We got it later, and I played entirely too much SM3 as a kid.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
hell yeah. to this day it is the easiest to go back and play, especially now since you can save on switch
Chaelomen@reddit
Oh snap, I see someone else already laid this out below.
moonbunnychan@reddit
As a kid I thought it was completely random and rare because of how little I saw it. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned it had specific spawn conditions.
MarsVolton@reddit
If you got every coin the ghost ship would appear
ManiacRichX@reddit
yup yup, you get the P wing
FullPrice4LatePizza@reddit
If you got 44 coins, you got a P-wing. I definitely found it worth that as a kid.
R0botDreamz@reddit
Our generation knew all the secrets without the internet. We are elite.
ironic-hat@reddit

mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
it was just a silly joke ☺️

blamberr@reddit
lol sorry. I honestly didn’t know due to my own playing habits. I wasn’t trying to be a jagoff
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
it's all good! since you were the first reply, i was nervous the comments were gonna be nothing but midnight mario reddit calling me out, but the waters stayed calm. i think your gif kept everyone cool 😂
and i finally played 1-4 after learning its secret prize 🏆
blamberr@reddit
lol omg I know how that feels when you think the comments are going against you in a really lighthearted post! I always try to use a funny gif so it doesn’t seem like I’m shitting on something. Glad it works!
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
it was totally unnecessary, but i really appreciate you coming back and saying all this! ☺️
it's been fun seeing us stay neck and neck. maybe midnight mario reddit are the real homies on here 😂

BlueBomber13@reddit

ouijahead@reddit
I had the nun too
MistaRekt@reddit
Bloody speed runners, am I right?
PapaDuckD@reddit
If you beat 1-2, you can go south.
If you beat 1-3, you can go east/south to get the hut that’s now a yellow M (due north over the castle).
If you beat 1-3, you don’t need to beat 1-4 to continue on the journey. You can back out to 1-2 and then go south.
Playing 1-4 is completely unnecessary.
besttobyfromtheshire@reddit
There are also like 2 or 3 one up mushrooms in 1-4 you're bypassing.
seanwdragon1983@reddit
Unless you want the anchor.
brakeb@reddit
No one needs the anchor if they are Nintendo Game master! I had a card and everything... That I made... and laminated
seanwdragon1983@reddit
No one needed anything, but it's fun to collect everything too.
Ok-Brick6831@reddit
From Print Shop? On a dot matrix printer?
brakeb@reddit
Of course, only the finest dot matrix printer
AdditionalMustard@reddit
This is also the first level where you can get a white mushroom house if you collect all of the coins.
blamberr@reddit
I know but I used to literally play all the levels, so this read as foreign to me. That was the only satisfying way to beat the game. How does it count at all if you skip half the levels?
donutseason@reddit
Noting you wanted to collect some good shit before moving on to 2. Easy power ups you’ll need later homes!
Fluid_Change_9647@reddit
I always did 1-4 for the two 1 ups and to spawn the coin ship.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
thanks ☺️
burnafter3ading@reddit
It was just tedious
blamberr@reddit
The only level I ever skipped on the regular after I beat the whole game on every level was giant world for some reason. The change in scale was weirdly difficult for me to navigate.
cjl99@reddit
This is the first time I've seen this as a reaction gif and it's the best.
PoisonMind@reddit
I've never seen anyone open the lock by beating the fortress. Just grab the whistle and go.

Knight_thrasher@reddit
“If you ever feel useless” they made a music box to but these hammer brothers to sleep so you can skip them.
I’m confused as to what’s useless
Cola_Gummi@reddit
Unskippable. Gotta get that mushroom house.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Real ones warped after the castle. I only knew of one warp whistle (at the castle) back then.
brainvheart143@reddit
WAIT there was also a warp zone right? I remember another level I was able to skip, the underwater one that was super hard, but I forget how. Am I confusing Mario games? My brain cells are sadly back in 1989
DylzPickelz@reddit
A white mushroom house? Wasn't it a white boat?
Busy_Fly8068@reddit
That’s a coinship! Hammer bros turn into coinships for another specific reason I can’t remember.
satanya83@reddit
That’s the coin ship, the hammer brother will turn into one sometimes. It has similar spawn requirements.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
please elaborate!
satanya83@reddit
When finishing the level, your coin count has to be a multiple of 11, and the ten digit of your score has to match that multiplier of 11 (so if you have 22 coins, it has to be 2), and you also had to account for any time bonus. I noticed the 11 part as a kid, but didn’t know about the score bit.

mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
HOW DO PEOPLE FIGURE THIS OUT? amazing. thank you for this 💞
Queenv918@reddit
Nintendo Power had an insanely- detailed, special guide to SMB3 that gave you all the secrets.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
not sure about the console version, but i played it tonight, and you can see it next to the moat
crabappleoldcrotch@reddit
Good god I hate a water world
Darkest_Rahl@reddit
If you get all the coins, the ghost ship appears though, right? Or maybe one of the gsmes? Damn. I need to play again. This level got pretty easy once the muscle memory came. I never skipped any level. I only used warp pipes to play specific levels of it was too close to dinner
AB3D12D@reddit
I hear the music looking at this
Hagan311@reddit
But 1-4 gives you the chance to get the White Mushroom house!
My_First_Knife1@reddit
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
this is 1-4 energy. read the room.
My_First_Knife1@reddit
"Read the room" You 👇

brian reagan is hilarious! thanks ☺️
59apache01@reddit
The only reason I'd play 1-4 was to get the white mushroom house to appear.
RealYessicaHaircut@reddit
The amount of time I spent on this game is unbelievable. Loved every minute of it too!
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
me too! and it was the first thing i played on my nintendo switch. if 3rd grade me knew that i'd be playing this on the toilet decades later, she'd laugh her ass off
winobambino@reddit
I miss this game world very much!!
Camron_Eckerman@reddit
This post was the deciding factor in what my wife and I played tonight.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
happy to help ☺️
karenobus@reddit
Skipping worlds 1-4 sounds like a great way to make it way less fun
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
up til tonight, playing 1-4 felt like bringing an apple to the teacher 😂
magster823@reddit
You were never curious at all?! I can't fathom it. Hell, I rarely warped in the NES Mario Bros. It takes out some of the fun!
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
i loved finding the whistles, but never warped...not even level 7 which is the worst
Gravethornnt@reddit
you matter more than a lot of people let you see
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)

protossaccount@reddit
I love WORLDS 1-4 and levels 1-4.
Hannibaalism@reddit
have you ever played the floor is lava with a life or death sense of seriousness? that’s what 1-4 felt like, unnecessary stressful fun lol
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
i mean...that's the only way to play floor is lava 💞
wetfloor666@reddit
I get the joke on difficulty, but jumping on the bullets is the key to this level. After you get your jumps timed with landing on/launching off the bullets, the level becomes a fun little rhythm game.
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
i was being hyperbolic for fun, but i have literally never played this level! is it really hard or something? now i'm seeing rumors about a special prize if you get all the coins in it, and wouldn't it be fun if this became a level 1-4 appreciation post
OutlawJuicyWhales@reddit
It's a straight forward, mildly annoying autoscrolling aerial platform level if you re just playing through to play it. But getting all 44(?) coins to unlock the white mushroom house containing the p-wing makes it a true challenge.
MmmSteaky@reddit
There are no bullets in that level.
ttttunos@reddit
Play all the levels and stock up on lives.
Caliastanfor@reddit
haha, completionist in me disagrees.
Atillion@reddit
My best friend and I would start at midnight and beat every level in SMB3 on into the morning. It was our favorite marathon and the only time we played level 1-4 🤣
mrs_hippiequeen@reddit (OP)
i love this story!
i did an original mario midnight marathon at my first sleepover, and i swear to god, the system overheated or something and shut off in level 8 😫😂
