Took the wrong fork in the road, I fear…

Recently I picked up two second gen outbacks, hoping to swap the engine & drivetrain from an 02 with 150k mi to a much less rusty 04 with 300k mi. Since Subaru added EGR sometime in between these two cars, I figured I had two options: drill and tap the head for the EGR port, or swap the ECM and wiring harness. For some godforsaken reason, I thought swapping the ECM and wiring harness would be the better way to go.
That was a ton of work, and I ran into a bunch of mismatched connectors. Instead of pausing to check my options, I doubled down and just kept swapping harnesses until I ran out of mismatched connectors. This wasn’t too technically challenging but took a ton of time.
Luckily, when I hooked the harnesses back up, the engine fired right up. Unfortunately, the airbag and ABS lights are both on. I think there’s a missed connection somewhere from hooking the 04 sensors up to the 02 harness. I‘ve tried to troubleshoot a bit but havent gotten anywhere.
I think I know what I need to do: backtrack, reinstall the original harnesses, and just swap the intake over with the EGR valve. This is mostly a rant, but maybe it’ll help someone avoid getting bad tunnel vision like I did. I didnt start this project because it’s easy, but because I thought it would be easy lol

Dude 90% of what I do is subis. You’re supposed to take both engines out and rebuild the heads for the car they’re going into because they would need head gaskets anyway.

Yup that was this winter’s project! I bought the green one a couple months before the red one. I did head & valve cover gaskets, timing belt, new clutch, and a few other things.
I wanted to just use the green car, but it was so rusty and taking me hours with a torch any time I needed to fix anything. I decided it wasn’t worth the trouble once I blew a rotted out brake line.

Let me guess. Brake line rotted where it passes under the rear seats

This would be so much easier with a lift!
The engine, trans, front suspension, and cradle all come out in about an hour, with a lift!
Keep on keeping on, bro.
(Now is a great time to slap on a Timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and replace the head gaskets)

I would love to have a lift (or even a two car garage) but honestly the cherry picker method is totally doable. Once I had everything unhooked, it was only like 3 hours to shimmy the engine and trans out and move it to the other car.
I got the green car a few months before the red one, and had the engine out for exactly those things! Unfortunately the green one is totally rotted out and falling apart, I would’ve really liked to keep it.

Next time around, find a clapped out LL Bean with the 3.0 H6, for your swap.
Shove that sucker into a Legacy or Impreza and have some fun!
I just sold off a 07 LLBean, it was a little lazy, but man it really had some power!

Your last sentence perfectly describes most projects I do. I’m using that line now. Also, I had 5 of this gen Outback from 2015-2024, they are such great cars. Sadly here in Wisconsin they rust away so bad I gave up on my last one and moved on to trucks. Lat one I had to swap subframes and the gas tank out due to rust. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Yeah the green one is from WI. I was astounded with the amount of rust. Someone had put some rubberized undercoating on there which made it even worse. I ended up getting the red one in Kentucky and it’s much nicer underneath.
It’s a 5 speed and super fun to drive! Will be going wild with the fluid film this fall to keep the rust at bay.

You may find a random video on youtube that tells you exactly what wire has to go where, even if it seems super specific
I found a random vid for swapping a obd1 m50 into and obd2 318is chassis, though right hand drive the wires were still the same

Wow! I wish you luck, stick with the original harness is my advice.
