It nearly all came to an end last night…

After all the hard work, getting my CDL, 30k miles with a trainer… last night was my first night in my own truck, headed to Denver from Springfield… and it nearly all came to an abrupt end. Just outside of Kansas City, at 3:30 in the morning, I was in the middle lane of a FIVE LANE HIGHWAY, and before I could even see him, he was there. Maybe 8 feet to the right of my truck, SLOWLY strolling across the five lane highway was a man either with a death wish, too high to care, homeless… I have no idea. All I could think about was what could have happened - my truck turning him into a splatter mark on the highway, me losing my job, going to jail, and a lifetime of therapy… if not the looney bin. I was genuinely concerned for whoever it was but my mind immediately went to the consequences that would have immediately fallen on me had he been in front of my truck. It was terrifying, and the resulting panic attack had me immediately looking for a place to shut down for the night after the panic and shock wore off. Stay safe out there drivers.

You get used to the dull thump after the 3rd or 4th one you hit.

They mess up recaps, though.

I feel like there is some level of truth to this.

Which company puts a trainer in for 30k
notfrontpage@reddit
What’s shocking to me is 30k miles with a trainer, what?!

🤷♂️ that’s what Prime asked of me so that’s what I did.
jmzstl@reddit
Ah that explains the Springfield mention with no reference to the state. There's only one city named Springfield that matters to Prime drivers.
Economy_Side9662@reddit
Oh if you're with Prime, why were you in the middle lane? That's not meant for 62mph trucks. Prime is always going around 435 in KC clogging up the middle lane
Yeti_Funk@reddit (OP)
It was after coming in from the left, I was working on going right and then I saw him. I try and stay to the right two lanes - it also helped that it was 330 in the morning and there was barely anyone on the roads. But yeah, I’m not that asshole.
Economy_Side9662@reddit
I had a crack head run across the highway on me a few weeks ago. I was doing about 55 with 44 tons of rock in my bed. Gross was about 125k. I saw him in time but man I was pissed. He ran like a cartoon character and he was carrying his cardboard bum sign.

Sad thing was we Recognized her!! She was someone we helped out on regular basis at one of regular break stops two exits back,( we live for late night Dutch Brothers) anyhooooo.... Stay safe y'all

You got lucky; lucky that you didn’t hit him, and lucky that you got hit with the really of what can happen so early in your career. This experience is a right of passage.
Focus on your breathing, feel the sensations around you, and then start thinking. If emotions start getting too strong, accept them, thank it for warning you, and dismiss them with the understanding that it’s warning you of something that’s already happened.
Once you have control, let yourself relieve what happened. Focus on the facts, it was dark and probably wasn’t wearing a reflective vest, he wasn’t in a sound state of mind, and you don’t hit him.
I wasn’t the most attentive driver when I started training, then I almost ran over my trainer. I’d only gotten my CDL a couple months earlier and I thought my trainer had gone to watch me back into a dock. Instead, he was starting to open the trailer doors. If my tandems weren’t all the way forward, I’d have killed him. I couldn’t hear him scream over the sound of the engine, I only stopped because multiple air horns blared simultaneously.
He let me sit alone in the sleeper while we cooled off. I was able to accept that my trucking career was over before it started, but I couldn’t accept how close I got to killing him. When we spoke he asked me if I’d learned a lesson, I said yes and he gave me a second shot.
It’s one thing to hear that trucking is the 7th deadliest career in the US, but it never fully hits you until you experience it. Your experience has caused you to be fully aware of what can happen; now you can make the fully informed decision on if you want this to be your career.

remember……..don’t leave your lane to avoid a person or object if it means YOU cause an accident doing it. I run nights and it can be 1am and someone is walking on side of freeway……I always change lanes if I can, never know if it’s a person planning suicide.
Mike18Wheels@reddit
TRUCKING for 41 years now, seen it all! ALL you can o is be safe as you can, eyes always moving, shit is just waiting for you!

I hit a man running across freeway in my pickup, on my way to work. Never saw him, loud bang, caught him with left front, tore off my side mirror. I pulled over right away. Didn’t see anything, though I hit a motorcycle, then to my horror, I saw a semi pull over behind me, his bumper torn up, then watched vehicle after vehicle run over something…….it was a man.
gearslammer386@reddit
I’ve seen the results of someone jumping out in front of a truck, and it was not pretty, and they had his body covered by the time I got to him, but some of his innards and meat weren’t covered.
Known_Lead_5320@reddit
I've been (un)fortunate enough to witness 2 people hit by trucks. White sheets fucking EVERYWHERE. It was disgusting. I'll never get that shit out of my head.
LastMongoose7448@reddit
Happened out here on the 210 a couple months ago. I think it was a woman, I don’t remember, but they were basically smeared all under the truck. I don’t know how long I would be out if something like that ever happened to me.
138_hail_yourself@reddit
Kansas City and Louisville are not fun to drive through. Sorry you had that close call on your first independent run! I just got home- drove through North Carolina for the first time, idk what the deal is there, but I saw an unreal amount of accidents, and cops!!
AffectionateWing9519@reddit
Why all of a sudden assume your going to jail for somebody in the middle of a 5 lane highway lol.. the fuck

The craziest crazies ive seen were two guys in the Arizona desert walking across the freeway in the middle of the night.

Had someone tell to jump out on me on I-20/59 in downtown Birmingham few years back. I called 911 to get police out there. It was foggy that morning, didnt seem like they had a death's, more like they were trying to get people to swerve.
ogbundleofsticks@reddit
Oh if your in the middle of a five lane interstate without. A car I'm not even losing sleep if I hit you.
Yeti_Funk@reddit (OP)
Yeah that sounds healthy /s
U_wind_sprint@reddit
Did you know? The most vehicle pedestrian fatalities happen on roads with 45 - 55 mph speed limits. These roads with traffic lights that connect smaller roads with major highways are the most dangerous. J walkers, bikes, etc. Watch out for them at night and especially after hours when people might have to walk to where they're going alongside traffic moving too fast to see them.
railnmilk@reddit
I worked for the railroad, I know the impact sound all too well.
duckbobtarry@reddit
That's wild. I saw someone on the side of the highway, nowhere near an exit or on ramp, walking along the other side. A truck hauling recycling came around the bend and the man walking just went out into the road, looking like he was looking for something. The truck locked it's brakes and the man looked up and threw up his hands, like in disappointment?
repatriated-Xpat@reddit
3:30am. You would be fine dude. Just keep going and assume it was a possum….
NostradamusJones@reddit
I've been driving through KC twice a week for a year and never seen that. Good thing you weren't someone screwing with their phone.
Yeti_Funk@reddit (OP)
It scared the shit out of me, it was like a deer on the side of the road that you don’t see until your right on top of it… i was trembling afterwards. Just held tight on the wheel trying to breathe.
NostradamusJones@reddit
It sort of happened to me in my first year. Driving late at night and suddenly there was a drunk woman walking down the shoulder. She tripped towards my lane and I had to swerve. That stuff sticks with you, but it's good. Reminds us how quickly things can go bad, and we need to be on our guard. Nice job driver.
Yeti_Funk@reddit (OP)
Yeah it was definitely a healthy reminder that the minute you let your guard down, something catastrophic can happen. And I was already planning on stopping soon because I could feel the drowsiness not far off. If anything I wish I had stopped sooner and missed the whole situation entirely.
Mstrchf117@reddit
Get a dash cam. Honestly im more worried about the trauma than anything with my job or the law if I hit a pedestrian. Had something similar happen to me a couple years ago but was in the middle of nowhere on i70 in Utah I think. About the same time. Im cruising along, see some white on the road, get closer and realize its fucking shoes and theres a person standing in the middle of the left lane! This was seriously in the middle of nowhere, didnt see any cars like on the shoulder or something, and PITCH black.
Yeti_Funk@reddit (OP)
Yeah I remember seeing someone walking on the side of the highway at like, 1 or 2 am out in the middle of nowhere a few weeks back… I thought that was scary boy did I have a lesson coming lol
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
I went over top of a body that was already hit once, that stayed with me a long time. Then the same area, a guy walked out and I smoked him. He chose it, I didn't report it or tell anyone till now

Not sure if it's just Kansas City or all over but we've been having a lot of people hit and killed trying to cross highways in the middle of the night here in the last year or two. glad you didn't have to experience that
Sparky3200@reddit
Seems like I read about one every few weeks from up there.
