blodgute@reddit
The whole idea is wild.
Let's say the apocalypse happens. You've got your bunker with clean air, hydroponics farms, entertainment, security, your own personal staff.
Why would that staff let the billionaire in?
You need people who can maintain the bunker. You need people who can make food. You need people who can keep it organised and safe.
The billionaire who paid for it all? The moment society collapses their billions have 0 value.
I'm sure some of them have realised this and installed a security measure, but then the whole thing is structured as hostile. Revolutions have happened against far greater odds
KnowledgeMediocre404@reddit
This really good article by Douglas Rushkoff from a few years back touched on that very thing.
"Finally, the CEO of a brokerage house explained that he had nearly completed building his own underground bunker system and asked, “How do I maintain authority over my security force after the event?”
This single question occupied us for the rest of the hour. They knew armed guards would be required to protect their compounds from the angry mobs. But how would they pay the guards once money was worthless? What would stop the guards from choosing their own leader? The billionaires considered using special combination locks on the food supply that only they knew. Or making guards wear disciplinary collars of some kind in return for their survival. Or maybe building robots to serve as guards and workers — if that technology could be developed in time."

Nintara@reddit
do you know where to find a non-paywalled version of this article?
KnowledgeMediocre404@reddit
Medium gives one free article of you are new to sign up. Otherwise you can use a paywall bypass. I shared this source as it was the authors original publishing and didn't want to dilute his words.
https://archive.ph/
Try this to bypass the paywall.
Atlasreturns@reddit
Being the only one who knows the locks to the food supply sounds like a great way to get tortured really badly.
_eternal_shadow@reddit
I doubt these pricks can hang on for more than 5 minutes.
ksck135@reddit
I doubt people who are used to other people serving them food several times a day would keep the code for themselves very long
11SomeGuy17@reddit
LMAO, no billionaire would move into a space like that. They'd get a group of friends and family and fund a bunker themselves if they wanted as such precisely to prevent such problems. The people here are probably millionaires but really even 10 mill is chump change compared to what the actually rich have.
antigop2020@reddit
Who would’ve thought when you get a bunch of selfish assholes with overblown egos in an “elite” survivalist community that they would not get along? 😱
KamaliKamKam@reddit
Not to mention, none of these elite assholes know how to do anything useful. I bet most of them can't cook, prep food, grow food, make or patch clothing, do basic carpentry, do basic troubleshooting, or do any basic plumbing/electrical/mechanical fixes. What are these twats going to do in an actual "supply chains break down" situation where they can't buy their way out of a problem?
MaddogBC@reddit
50 bucks says not 1 in 10 could light a fire outdoors in wet conditions even with a lighter. Used to be a fundamental skill to daily human survival. For thousands of years.
RandomBoomer@reddit
For tens of thousands of years, if not hundreds. (The timeline for humans manipulating fire keeps getting pushed back farther and farther.)
Gloomy_Industry8841@reddit
Is that true? Like historically?
ThaMenacer@reddit
There is evidence that humans have been using fire for at least 400,000 years. Here is a video from the British Museum about it.
gnostic_savage@reddit
There is a distinction between humans "using" fire, i.e., capturing embers from natural burns of some kind and transporting them back to caves/settlements, and humans "making" power using flint or some other method.
Humans (homo erectus) have been using fire for as long as two million years.
Humans (Neanderthal) have been "making" fire for 400,000 years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Control_of_fire_by_early_humans
myshtree@reddit
Agreed. These are the kind of people who survive. Not sure many of them left any more. Such an inspiring story.

hibuddha@reddit
Sociopaths, we call them sociopaths after they graduate high school
Comrade_Compadre@reddit
I forget which sub it was but I got banned for calling them sociopaths because the mod team felt I was throwing around ableisms...
No, that's almost verbatim what you'd call this.
These people are sociopaths
Lost_Birthday_3138@reddit
Probably the anarchy sub, those mods are silly. I think called MAGA "morons" once and it got deleted because "ableist" 🤣
Comrade_Compadre@reddit
Yeah man I think that's actually the one lol
That ban was a long time ago, crazy how a "leftist" anatchy sub had such assholes as mods.
Gloomy_Industry8841@reddit
Truly bizarre.
KnowledgeMediocre404@reddit
Is pointing out someone is a sociopath ableist? They're overrrepresented in powerful and successful roles because they'll do what we won't. It would be like saying "Olympian" is an ableist term, maybe for the rest of us...
Comrade_Compadre@reddit
I think the email legit said I wasn't a psychiatrist and had no evidence of a diagnosis or something. The mod not only permabanned but muted me for a month.
It was truly bizarre. Clearly a case of yet another power tripping mod
TheOtherHobbes@reddit
Probably a sociopath.
followupquestion@reddit
A position of power with little to no oversight? That’s every sociopath’s dream. I’d love to see a study on sociopathy in Reddit mods and if there are broader trends associated. I have a feeling the bigger the sub, the greater the chances of sociopathy in its mods.
HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
This comment gave me my morning smile. Thank you.

MariaValkyrie@reddit
Lets not kid ourselves, they were sociopaths for much longer than that, society just doesn't care until they reach that magic number.
hibuddha@reddit
Before that, they at least have the capacity to change.
_stumblebum_@reddit
not true.
hibuddha@reddit
It's a bit horrifying to suggest that children can't be taught, the world must be pretty sad from that perspective
RandomBoomer@reddit
They can be taught, but it's apparently a therapy-intensive challenge to do so.
hibuddha@reddit
The alternative to trying is just letting them deteriorate society. As someone who knew sociopaths growing up and now works in therapy, it's worth it and the kids are always thankful to finally see things as others do
dazz_i@reddit
imo they're also sociopaths before high school.
heck psychopaths are that way from birth
Additional-Signal327@reddit
Narcissists too
Crommach@reddit
They could have just played Bioshock and saved themselves some trouble.
dasunt@reddit
Bioshock is probably far too optimistic.
Rapture was functional for a decade. I wouldn't give these fools those odds.
ISB-Dev@reddit
The headline is click bait. These aren't rich people or "elites".
Be smarter.
13rialities@reddit
Yeah, the article says the properties cost up to $55000 plus rent and fees. Idk how high the rent and fees are but that base price is cheaper than a mobile home.
Dragoncat_3_4@reddit
Lmao, the self-selected out all the useful traits for coexistence and thought that it would be fine. Hilarious. I'd totally watch a reality TV special of that though. They wouldn't even need producers to manufacture the drama.
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
Haha that is one realty I would watch.
SnailPoo@reddit
Didn't they already do that? I forget the name of the show, but it was a big brother type of house full of celebrities. Verne Troyer (Mini Me) was on it.
Steen70@reddit
The Surreal Life.
There was a reality show about a bunch of addicts in a rehab house - Dr. Drew (??)
Anyways, I am guessing Bunker Armageddon House would get the highest of ratings.

delusionalbillsfan@reddit (OP)
Submission statement: Article talks about wealthy individuals having petty grievances with eachother, as well as meltdowns, in their doomsday/apocalypse bunker community when it's only 1/3 occupied with no ongoing apocalypse.
Relates to collapse because it's a common theme that the wealthy will try and hunker down in bunkers, but this article shows it's unlikely to work.
ForwardCulture@reddit
It’s a common theme in wealthy communities overall…constant lawsuits and disputes. I’ve done a lot of work in a wealthy area. I remember years ago going to a project at an amazing property with my then business mentor. I was asking him about the neighborhood and all the homes there. Stunning area. Then he explained to me, while pointing to each house how all of them have some sort of lawsuit against the other about things like fences, trees, property lines, gardens etc. Every single house had a dispute with the one next to it and half the people didn’t even live there full time.
It was the same thing when I briefly dated a local woman in the area who lived with her wealthy parents. Awesome home on an awesome property. Every neighbor had disputes with each other and hated each other. Constant drama over petty things.
J-A-S-08@reddit
Yeah, that's what happens when you don't have to worry about the things 99% of the population has to worry about. When you don't have to think about how you're going to make rent, get food, etc, you start manufacturing stupid shit to "worry" about.
JamesDerecho@reddit
On this same topic, a lot of Jane Austen’s literature was written as satire to reflect this tendency among the aristocracy. It’s why all of her books, especially Emma, are about horrible petty rich people.
This has been a known issue since the start of society.
KnowledgeMediocre404@reddit
And yet we continue to allow them to exist like this.
ttystikk@reddit
I'm sure they're very tasty with BBQ sauce.
TAX THE RICH OR EAT THEM!
Billionaires are a cancer on civilization!
ThaMenacer@reddit
Couple hours in the smoker would do them some good.
phish_phace@reddit
This is where I’m at. We know where they live, we know (or an easily find out )who their family members are. There should be pressure on all of them and they should be made to feel as uncomfortable as some of us do.
RandomBoomer@reddit
I dunno about that. Most of my neighbors are poor and they are constantly gossiping and bickering about the stupidest shit.
I think this is just a human thang.
Kammender_Kewl@reddit
You just described a good 80% of the population
RandomBoomer@reddit
We're primates, and if you've ever watched a group of primates interacting, it will all make sense.
Cantareus@reddit
Difference is when you're poor you can't afford lawyers for suing your neighbors.
highercyber@reddit
I live in a "middle-class" suburb and someone anonymously threatened me over my bushes. It's crazy the drama people will manufacture.
Kammender_Kewl@reddit
Id post a big cardboard sign on top the hedges that say "FUCK OFF DIPSHIT"
KnowledgeMediocre404@reddit
I've heard this referenced in the terms of their school organizations too. People who moved into "lower tier" districts in the US say it's like night and day with how the lower class parents cooperate and work together to make the school better for all kids. Meanwhile PTA meetings for the wealthy areas had parents actively trying sabotage to give their own kids an edge. So sad, we need to classify it as mental illness and disallow the accruement of ao much money.
Kammender_Kewl@reddit
How do you think they got to live in those wealthy areas to begin with? Sabotage those around you to give yourself an edge.
thefumingo@reddit
I remember going to a pretty good high school in a wealthy suburb, there was a lot of materials about how it's a "dog eat dog" world and my health teacher would say "being selfish in this time of your life is a good thing"
justsomeyeti@reddit
I worked in a very wealthy city in the DFW metroplex, in Tarrant County.
It seemed like half of the town was suing each other, and there was a form of town gossip that was carried on at one of the megachurches in the area. Most of these people clearly hated each other and saw each other as competition.
I didn't really see much of that behavior from athletes and actors/media personalities, mostly from the young execs and lawyers, and day traders.
DenseBeautiful731@reddit
What is this? This welcome feeling of… schadenfreude!
It-s_Not_Important@reddit
I think we should sneak into their bunkers to install hidden cameras, then stage a fake apocalypse. When they all retreat to their bunkers we can have a good time watching them break down slowly while drinking their own recycled urine and succumbing to infighting.
Maro1947@reddit
And weld/concrete the doors shut
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
Id watch that one.
DenseBeautiful731@reddit
Write it, LOL.
Like your protagonist could target their network infrastructure.
Redirection to fake content. Their radios, like FM/AM/CBR/FRS/GMRS/ham, cellular, PANs, WANs, but satellite would be an issue, though.
INB4 someone uses AI to generate it, out of spite
brethrenchurchkid@reddit
I think the novel already exists, and there's a scene in it where one of the characters is in Singapore trying to escape being killed. That's all I remember, sorry 😭😭
Cantareus@reddit
If it's the same one I read, it's called "The Future" by Naomi Alderman. >! A group create a fake program for predicting the apocalypse and sell it to three or four billionaires resembling Elon, Jeff and Mark then fix the world with their money while they're hiding on their island !<
brethrenchurchkid@reddit
Bingo, that's it! Thanks!
forchinski@reddit
You should actually damage or shut off the ventilation shafts.
Fresh air is healthy and they should come outside and play with the rest of us :3
Interesting_Fly_1569@reddit
Would 100% watch that reality show.
There is a very funny film called Underground by Emir Kurstica that explores absurdist scenarios around bunkers
evanescentglint@reddit
I’d very much watch that show.
EndlessB@reddit
Did you read the article? This place isn’t for rich people, it’s 55k a unit, that’s middle class rates. It’s a scam.
Mission_Reply_2326@reddit
That was my question too. It sounds like people already actually live there. A couple, their adult daughter, and her two kids all in one home for $55K???
disclosureanticlimax@reddit
"with no ongoing doomsday or apocalypse"
dont fucking gaslight us like that
Fit_Tumbleweed7943@reddit
This is exactly how I predict this scenario to pan out.. funny that there is now real evidence about it..
Who would have thought
Dragoncat_3_4@reddit
Welp... At least we can rest easy that the continued existence of the human race wouldn't be in the form of 100% condensed pure sociopathy surviving the genetic bottleneck. They're going down like everyone else.
Ok_Repeat_1995@reddit
Thats just, funny and sad. But kind of reassuring the collapse shows humans true colors. Surviving it seems like worse than surviving today.
adamfowl@reddit
I’ve got an idea: we fake an apocalypse to initiate their lockdown procedures and then after they run to their hidey holes… and then we live our lives in peace.
DashJackson@reddit
There's actually a sci-fi novel based on more or less this exact idea with remixes of musk, bezos, and zuck as the "victims/villians".
Doridar@reddit
Could we have the title, please?
DashJackson@reddit
The future, by Naomi Alderman.
SmokedUp_Corgi@reddit
These dumbasses can’t understand they will be alive in a world that has no place for them. In an end of the world scenario they be some of the first to go so long as people can reach them.
SeVenMadRaBBits@reddit
Also, when all the poor die. And there are no more poor, are you rich? Can't be rich if there are no poor. You'll just be a common man at that point.
Megodont@reddit
Wait until they realize that nobody is left to scrub their toilets.
kingfofthepoors@reddit
The preppers are paying enormous sums to preserve their status through an event that would, by definition, eliminate the basis for that status entirely. They'd emerge from their bunkers as just... people. Probably people with soft hands and no practical skills, surrounded by others who are angry and heavily armed.
LXDTS@reddit
No, you become the new poor for the even richer. "You make less than $10mil/ year? Ew, peasant."
Once the group that they are targeting is eradicated they need another group to villainize.

The_World_Is_A_Slum@reddit
It is so strange that the wealthiest and most powerful people have the least valuable skills. So many of them would be unable to survive without assistance.
Imaginary_Cow_6379@reddit

Kiloburn@reddit

_sunbleachedfly@reddit
Almost all of them were already born on third base, they never had to develop a skill. “Daddy’s money” moved the goalpost, they didn’t need to learn anything bc they know they can just pay someone else to do the work for them and they’ll be able to profit off of it.
Billionaires are parasites and should be treated as such.
mrpickles@reddit
This is hilarious, and also terribly tragic of humanity.
phish_phace@reddit
We need a good writer, director and producer to make a post-apocalyptic film about this- the wealthy who survived. There is no hope in this movie, no hope for survival. Just man’s last breath expressed as greed as the wealthy consume one another in their bunkers, while humanity fades away.
Megodont@reddit
There is an episode of "Love Death & Robots" where this is actually in. But only briefly.
QueefBeefCletus@reddit
Didn't this happen in Fallout? The entire bunker went homicidal?
clubby37@reddit
Don't forget Bioshock!
Megodont@reddit
This was the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about Thiel's Freedom Cities.
P_mp_n@reddit
To anyone interested, there were a lot of vaults and they were ready made social experiments. So they did basically all the social experiments.
Imsosaltyrightnow@reddit
I mean yes, multiple times. But most vaults were basically designed to do that. Ones without an experiment, or ones like the vault that would be come vaults city who’s “experiment” was simply opening a century earlier than the other ones ended up fine.
camopdude@reddit
Or on the positive side we are not made to live in holes in the ground no matter how well we could possibly get along with who else is stuck there with us.

HousesRoadsAvenues@reddit
The line that got me was the "resident" shooting a contractor and the jury letting him off the hook because of South Dakota's "Stand Your Ground" law.
When SHTF there will be no "laws". Woe to the person who shots another person - who also has a gun. Way to go overly rich dumbasses.
Peak_District_hill@reddit
Is a $55k bunker really aimed at the super rich?
DenseBeautiful731@reddit
Nope, it isn’t, but the more expensive it is the worse its residents’ egos are. Treat it as a preview.
Dentarthurdent73@reddit
Genuinely wealthy people will just have their own bunkers.
They won't be buying a small unit in a larger complex.
The article doesn't actually discuss what it purports to at all. People living in $55K units are not "wealthy", and cheap, mass-produced concrete units are not where wealthy people are going to be living come the apocalypse.
Whatever schadenfreude people are getting from this is just wishful thinking.
DenseBeautiful731@reddit
They’ll have cruise ships FTW
voidsong@reddit
Yeah how rich can you be if you need roommates.
jeffplaysmoog@reddit
Also it says that +rent/fees? Who do you pay rent to when the world ends? Like, so I write a check? Haha
kingfofthepoors@reddit
The rent model also means Vivos has every incentive to keep selling the fear of apocalypse indefinitely while having zero incentive to actually prepare people for one. It's a subscription business built on anxiety.
Living-Excuse1370@reddit
Being in a bunker with a load of selfish, narcissistic, psychopathic wankers would be insufferable, They would never be able to work together to survive. It will be (I hope) miserable. They're welcome to it, I prefer to stay and try to save a dying mother earth. If they all disappear into their bunkers then maybe, just maybe the world could be a better place.
The_Dead_Kennys@reddit
I just realized what a fucking hilarious reality tv show this would make. You wouldn’t even need to manipulate how the footage is presented in order to manufacture drama, these entitled delusional pricks would create plenty of it for real because that’s just who they are! 🤣
ksck135@reddit
Isn't that why they always put at least one rich entitled person in reality show? They would steer absolutely unhinged drama that normal person would never imagine, people love freak shows

They'll bunker when they fear imminent apocalypse, not after. It's up to us normy nonplayer characters in the outside world to help them feel safe, fortunate and protected from scary bad things so that they don't need to leave their bunkers. That's how we contain them and start building a functioning society. We'll have plenty left over to keep them fed, and we'll learn a lot about avoiding the development of certain personality types by providing an empathic ear. Don't judge, the empathy is genuine. They couldn't build a viable planet hugging society, they are disabled in that way. But we can. And we may be able to provide deprogramming and a safe home for their kids eventually. Just sayin'.

Yeah he did a very short time before that on Wall Street which was, uh, lucrative.
WarmScientist5297@reddit
He always shows up looking like a dishevelled hobo. It’s so hard to imagine him on Wall Street.
JudgmentUnited5297@reddit
It was very different in the 80s, the Gordon Gecko shit didn't really arrive until after his time there. A lot of guys were just legit good at track betting and knew a guy to get them in.
CerseisWig@reddit
At least they could blame it on lack of oxygen.

Finally some good news.

GOOD.

I'm 41, old enough to have met hundreds and hundreds of people.
There are only 2 that I would take with me in my end-of-the-world bunker.
People can be great... until they are hungry, there's money involved (which would be resources instead in that context), or can fuck your wife.
If they are good people you'll get excuses afterwards... but the harm will be done.
Even my best friend. I know him well enough to know that he will end up ruining the food supply one night.

Imagine being hours away from your bunker when SHTF. Wealthy elites WOULD have to know when something big is gonna happen to give them time to flee safely while the commoners perish/rot.
Imaginary_Cow_6379@reddit
Tbf they could know in advance if they were the ones who caused SHTF. They could just go to their bunker and set shit to go off after they’re safely hidden away. I assumed that’s what most of them were planning for when they all started building bunkers. Look at Peter Thiel just running away to Argentina now after he destroyed the US. He set shit up for disaster and then he ran away to make sure he didn’t get caught in the blowback of what he created. A lot of these crazy super rich people follow other insane rich people like Curtis Yarvin and actively want to make civilization collapse so they can all then rule over the ashes of their own technofeudalist kingdoms. If this sounds dumb as hell that’s because it is. But they’re still doing it anyway. 🤷🏻♀️

From the article: If this is really the best of humanity that will weather the storm, we could be doomed after all.
Maybe assuming the wealthiest are necessarily the best is a significant part of how we got here
BerryLanky@reddit
The best part os’s none of these billionaires will ever know true friendship. I’m friends with the guys I’ve known since 5th grade. Nothing better than sitting on a patio having beers and cutting up. These billionaires will never know that. Everyone in their life wants something or has something they want. Their life revolves around how much money they have. I’d take life long friendship and a comfortable life over hoarding money.
SteppenAxolotl@reddit
I doubt a billionaire is buying a bunker for $55k + rent and is moving the fam in in 2026. It's a cement box with some dirt on top on a time share plot.
SteppenAxolotl@reddit
Who will empty the over filled septic systems after society falls. Will the service contracts still be good.
Majestic-Marzipan621@reddit
Although it's an unground bunker, you'd thing they wouldn't want one near a state we actively store nuclear weapons (North Dakota), or am I missing something?
Jet-Black-Meditation@reddit
Nah, the Dakotas are littered with silos. The concept is to cause other nations to waste nukes on the low populated areas with the silos. They would be the hardest hit if nuclear war happens.
Majestic-Marzipan621@reddit
But the Dakotas are low populated areas?
Jet-Black-Meditation@reddit
I was saying nah, you right. I was agreeing.
Majestic-Marzipan621@reddit

So in the end rich people grifting and scamming other rich people. They deserve each other.

The following submission statement was provided by /u/delusionalbillsfan:
Submission statement: Article talks about wealthy individuals having petty grievances with eachother, including lawsuits as well as meltdowns, in their doomsday/apocalypse bunker community when it's only 1/3 occupied with no ongoing doomsday or apocalypse.
Relates to collapse because it's a common theme that the wealthy will try and hunker down in bunkers, but this article shows it's unlikely to work.
