Feels like the Y wing would be a P-47. 80% of the airframe was a turbo charged diesel engine allowing it to fly high and far where other planes would choke out in the thin air and it could carry a ton of ordinance. It weighed a fuck ton so it could dive and zoom away without losing much velocity. It wasn't very maneuverable compared to the lighter P-51.
The Dauntless was always my first thought at a comparison as well. Though designed as a scout and dive bomber, they were a great multirole aircraft that were even used in fighter/intercept missions in rare occasions
The Y-Wing was inspired by the P-38. It was just as much of a fighter as the X-Wing in episode IV. What makes it any more of a bomber other than making the trench run first?
Same reason games make revolvers a glass cannon and automatic pistols shit. Games need to give players a choice of what they want to play with instead of just making one thing that is good at everything.
Flying one of these in squadrons with an ion turret is one of the best, and in some cases, only way to take down TIE defenders. A Y wing is no slouch in a dogfight in the right hands.
Sure, but the OG lore was it was the primary multi-role fighter for the rebellion until they got the X-Wings, where it would regularly go toe to toe with TIEs and win dogfights. It's fine for them to be relegated to ground attack when a shinier, newer, multi-roll takes the spotlight, I don't think that is what OP is talking about. The issue is, once it got put in that slot, media has flanderized it more and more towards a dedicated bomber, to the point where it would be laughable to consider it dogfighting with TIEs in the way it is now portrayed. Even though it was originally pretty damn good at it, just not as good as the X-Wing. Hell, even in Rogue Squadron, which is several steps down the pipeline, it is described as "the workhorse of the Rebellion."
I hate the y-wing in that game. The firing cadence is duhduh…duhduh…duhduh - reload. I much prefer the CIS bomber because it dumps all six bombs almost instantly.
Star wars is basically naval ww2 combat so the x wing is a fighter while the y wing is cleary inspired by strike aircraft like the bf110 and p38 lightning
The TIE Fighter got screwed way worse. In the original movie there's zero indication that it's any less resilient or deadly than the average X-Wing but RPGs and video games turned it into a fragile POS.
Yeah, i still remember the old Tie fighter game.
Like, every mission on the titular craft, with no shields or armor felt like playing mario in space with no powerups. One volley from Z-95 amd you're toast.
Interceptor was not much better. But then you get to fly Tie Advanced and Tie Defender, and those kick ass
Rebel fighter lineup really does work great together.
X-Wing for multirole space combat, quite fast and agile while also packing good firepower, proton torpedoes, enough armour and shields to withstand a hit or two (especially in the games where properly managing your shields let's you finish most missions without a scratch)
Y-Wing an older strike bomber equipped with ion cannons, a lot of torpedoes and it used to have a rear gunner, still agile enough not to be an easy target and actually capable of modes dogfight (it actually outmaneuvers TIE bombers)
A-Wing a state of the art space supremacy interceptor, king of dogfights, equipped with concussion missile launchers that were more capable of taking down maneuverable opponents than proton torpedoes.
B-Wing heavier, slower, chonkier Y-wing successor that packed even more firepower. Having a heavier bomber meant that rebels could engage capital ships with fighters more easily. B-Wings could probably take Y-Wing's heavier missions while X-Wings could take the lighter ones
Tbh by the Battle of Endor the Y-wing was decades old heavily stripped-down military surplus, it's a miracle they were able to fly at all. Still one of my favorite ships though.
It got older as time went on. Like Z-95 tech advancements take a bite on older gen hardware. In old Lucasarts games this ship was definitely a winner each time TIEs tried to come at you head first. Not so much when you needed to bring the heat against capital ships and they could attack you freely. I have no idea how this ship behaves in modern games though but back then it was a great ship and my favorite until B-wing came along.
It's also generally got the best armour of any 1-2 man fighter, able to tank more hits, plus it has a turret and bombing capability. It's not ideal for dogfights, but it ain't no slouch either.
Th34sa8arty@reddit
The Y-Wing has always been a bomber. Did anyone watch A New Hope?
Thin_General_8594@reddit
Yeah, it's like a b-25 vs a p-47
X-wing did carry bombs, but only 2- Y wing could carry 12 or more

The P-47 didn't run of diesel. It used the same R-2800 as the corsair, hellcat, and several more.
Ossius@reddit
Thanks for the correction, I think someone gave me bad info haha.

A Y-wing is not like a B-25. It's more like a combination of a Dauntless and Avenger carrier bombers.
