Baby-girl-54321@reddit
People say they want cheap cars until a company actually tries to build one.
Shmokesshweed@reddit
This isn't cheap. It has less features for the money than a base Maverick.
Snazzy21@reddit
This is why I roll my eyes at someone saying they wish more stuff was made in the US. When it comes along, they get sticker shock seeing that it comes with a price.
Ford has negotiating power to get better deals on parts than Slate, and they make the Maverick in Mexico where labor costs less, the supply chain is better, and they aren't paying tariffs on the machinery that they need to import.
Slate is at a massive disadvantage on every level, so while it's a bad value, I wouldn't blame it on Slate wanting more profits.
SharkBaitDLS@reddit
But why would you buy this over a Maverick which is far more capable for the same money, or if you want a compact EV truck pay a little more for a Telo and get an actual bed and payload capacity.
T-Baaller@reddit
Novelty and fun for people that can't afford multiple >60,000 cars.
In a better world that should be enough to say "oh that's neat" even if it doesn't work for them.
MrBlankenshipESQ@reddit
Correct amount of doors, serviceability, quality, and not having 3/4ths of a best buy?
I'm not in the market for a new vehicle anytime soon, but if you look at my flair you'll see there's a market for simple. Even the most bare bones Slate is still fancier than what I'm already driving.
demonkeyed@reddit
The Telo is very cool but their estimated target price is easily 50% more than this. $42k vs “mid 20s”. Also the Slate has a lot more momentum and serious investment to actually come to fruition. I’d love a Telo some day though.
Kelkeen_1980@reddit
The cheapest Maverick in my area is 30k on their website which surely has another 3k in BS garbage that isn't included. I don't consider that the "same money"
GrimmandLily@reddit
Yeah except they failed on the cheap part when it comes to price.
Skensis@reddit
People also want some level of luxury and practicality.
This vehicle is looking to come up short on both fronts. Killing the EV credit is going to be the nail in the coffin for Slate.
anonymous-shmuck@reddit
Except it actually has to be cheap/good value. For 14k, all day long… a great golf cart with AC.. for Maverick money, it’s just a dumb buy.
cgduncan@reddit
Have you shopped golf carts lately? A Club Car with Lithium batteries is actually 14k. That's not enclosed, tops out at 25mph, and won't go 100 miles on a charge, lol.
You can't pretend that's basically the same value as the slate.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
If Suzuki could sell the Jimny here for the price they charge in Asia, I’d buy one tomorrow.
Snazzy21@reddit
I have no doubt it would sell better if released in 1973-1978 than it would today. People don't buy small basic vehicles anymore, they're all gone in the US.
And unlike today, more people owned homes and were in a position to add a charging outlet, today that demographic rents and can't control whether they have access to a charger overnight.
And the price won't be as low as it should be for what they removed because they lack scale, so when the price comes out in the ballpark of a Maverick, it will seem like a bad value. If Ford made the same vehicle they'd be able to sell it for less using thanks to more leverage when negotiation with parts vendors.
I think this is why all the EV companies start high end, the lack of price negotiation can be hidden in the higher margins expensive vehicles have.
UmaThurmish@reddit
car is far too basic to cost more than 25K.
mustangfan12@reddit
Even $25k is too much, a Nissan Kicks is cheaper and offers way more features
MarcoVinicius@reddit
Yeah but then you’ll have to be a Nissan driver. No one should have that curse put on them. 😞
mustangfan12@reddit
I mean the Slate is a shitbox EV also with no modern amenities at all. They were too lazy even to install speaker wiring and a single/double din slot
KeyboardGunner@reddit
Unfortunately the Nissan Kicks doesn't have a bed.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
It’d be cheaper to buy a Kick and modify it to have a bed
mustangfan12@reddit
Unfortunately projects to change a cars body style are very expensive, but like the Ford Maverick starts at $30k and currently with employee pricing it can be as cheap as $26k and you get way more for your money on the Maverick
marcduberge@reddit
Maverick Hybrid is a really great value and for many smaller contractors a perfect work truck. No range anxiety and 35+ MPG
Several-Eggplant4460@reddit
Let's be real, 90% of truck buyers aren't contractors lol, they're just getting a truck because they go to home depot twice a year and think they need a vehicle that is hard to park every day of the year
scrappybasket@reddit
lol trucks arent hard to park. Just back in. I parallel park with my ram all the time too
_jagwaz@reddit
No single cab in the maverick unfortunately, that’s what a lot of people are looking for in the slate. Something actually compact.
DaBanninator@reddit
Try modifying the Kicks into an EV 😂
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Why would you need to turn it into an EV? It comes with an engine
DaBanninator@reddit
Because you're comparing a combustion shitbox to an EV.
Paladinraye@reddit
An EV shitbox. At $25k there is no argument for the stripper spec
DaBanninator@reddit
So don't buy it. Plenty of other people will. Nobody is preordering a a Nissan fucking Kicks
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
Well of course, the Kicks is already out, it’d just be an order
Paladinraye@reddit
I’m not. I’m allowed to state my opinion that this entire truck and company is a fucking gimmick. It’s a shitbox truck for $25k with no radio, crank windows (which they admit cost more than power windows to implement), 150 miles of range, and less towing capacity than my 20 year old Mercedes sedan. But hey, iTs GoT a BEd!
For the tools like you that will preorder this shitbox, go ahead and blow your money. Yeah, it doesn’t have a huge fucking screen and that’s awesome, but you mean to tell me they couldn’t work in a basic single din radio and a couple speakers for $25k? What a joke

CaptainGo@reddit
My biggest problem with the Slate is that so far it's entire purpose is for the same things I can do with a 20 year old Ford Ranger, and that's got a radio
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
The main points are being a cheap truck
As long as it moves under its own power I don’t think the method of propulsion really matters; neither is going to be notable
DaBanninator@reddit
WRONG
There are plenty of cheap used trucks on the market. This is a cheap new EV truck.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
I think you’re kinda losing the plot of what I was talking about. My original comment about tearing the back off a Nissan Kick to turn it into a ute lol
I wasn’t intending on having an argument with someone’s dad who’s getting overly emotional talking about economy vehicles

inlibrary_legsnumb@reddit
EV's can be shit boxes as well
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
It’s a little disingenuous to single out the Kicks as a shitbox when the Slate doesn’t even have powered windows.
I mean heck it’s electric powertrain by definition is the economy part of econobox
Theseus-Paradox@reddit
Shitbox doesn’t mean the options it doesn’t have…..it means it’s built like shit, which a Nissan product is usually.
_jagwaz@reddit
I have a feeling the guy who drives a model 3 isnt using shitbox to refer to build quality
asault2@reddit
Worst of all scenarios: an out of warranty Nissan
howyinzdoingnat@reddit
Who the fuck would buy a kicks on purpose
mustangfan12@reddit
I used it as an example to showcase how absurdly stripped it is
howyinzdoingnat@reddit
That’s literally the point of the vehicle however it’s not a fake suv shaped Sentra. It’s a fake truck shaped leaf
DaBanninator@reddit
🤣
The kicks is a gasoline shitbox
jacob6875@reddit
For only 150mi of range and not even including a radio I really hope it doesn’t start at 25k.
threesimplewords@reddit
Not any with a bed you can't. People keep overlooking the fact that it's a truck
SharkBaitDLS@reddit
It’s a tiny bed with barely any payload capacity.
threesimplewords@reddit
It's literally the same payload as a maverick
JollyBodkin@reddit
Towing capacity is 4,000lb vs 1,000lb
threesimplewords@reddit
What does towing capacity have to do with payload?
scrappybasket@reddit
Homie doesn’t know the difference lol
Skensis@reddit
Perfect for a techies beach house.
beefman202@reddit
150 miles of range is usueless when it drops even further if you do any kind of actual hauling in the bed
threesimplewords@reddit
That is not at all true. Weight in the bed will have a negligible if not unnoticeable effect on range. Weight in general doesn't hurt range much. What does is aerodynamics. It's why bix boxy trailers will absolutely kill range, but a low trailer loaded up heavy won't impact range as much. I have a F150 lightning and tow routineally as well as use the bed.
beefman202@reddit
Whats the range on a lightning
threesimplewords@reddit
Standard range is 240 (what I have) extended range is 300 something.
confirmd_am_engineer@reddit
250 mi I believe.
RevvCats@reddit
I grew up with my dad owning a few 80s Toyota pickups and a 94 Chevy S-10, if the slate had a 6’ bed instead of 5’ it would be pretty close in size to a S-10. I’d love a pickup truck that size they’re so fucking handy.
Price wise though this is going to be going up against base Mavericks. I just looked and there’s 265 new hybrid mavericks on the lot today listed between 24.5-28k
DaBanninator@reddit
That's not a truck. It's "truck" 😂
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
No space to put a double din is terrible
icecream_specialist@reddit
All for back to basics for cars but don't of the things they are omitting is ridiculous. No radio? Cars have had some sort of audio for how many decades? No one thinks listening to music in your car is tech creep. Also crank windows, more complicated and probably more expensive to implement these days than electric windows and again been around for decades, it's not done finicky tech fad
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
Yeah the crank window can’t be cheaper at this point, it almost feels like it’s almost a marketing play to people stuck 20 years in the past. “Look how practical we are cutting out those newfangled window motors, look how we’re saving you money,” trying to build a cult of personality on fake frugality.
Skensis@reddit
Some of the cost cutting is just gimmicky, and they have hard points for adding in speakers which is nice but the cost to do that after the fact is going to be expensive for end users.
But I guess you can just get a shitty Bluetooth party speaker.
avoidhugeships@reddit
Yes! I just want cars with no sensors or finicky interior tech. Give me analog gauges and a screen that just do displays my phone and I am good.
Anchor_Aways@reddit (OP)
A bigger knock to me is the +5k add on to make it an SUV. For the likely price of $30k you can get in a Leaf or Bolt with far more features & range.
marcduberge@reddit
And for $15k you can buy a four year old Bolt which is a great car
avoidhugeships@reddit
It's a usable econobox. Not exactly what most people would call great.
suspicious_hyperlink@reddit
It will be 27,999
HaggardSummaries@reddit
What don’t I know about Slate that justifies all these hateful, bitchy comments?
IMA_5-STAR_MAN@reddit
I'd take a used truck over a 1000 lb towing capacity. That's a joke of a number. I could get a 22 Hyundai Santa cruz with 22k miles for $22k and that'll be 10x the car.
sickmemes48@reddit
A brand new slate < slightly used Maverick
hawkeyes007@reddit
Even a new maverick. I’m seeing base models for $28K
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
Sure, $28k, but how much to retrofit it to have no power windows and no infotainment screen? Because you can’t play car hipster in a Maverick.
tuck5903@reddit
Don’t forget to remove 2 of the seats to make it less practical.
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
I fully believe that’s exactly what they’re doing with the window thing. There’s no way it’s actually cheaper.
66LSGoat@reddit
I have one singular friend that wants this truck. He’s a trust fund kid with a Rolex that loves to cosplay as a country boy.
Not joking. 100% true.
dqrules11@reddit
Also shrink the gas tank so it only goes 170 miles, 90 in the winter.
SkellyJelly33@reddit
That's MSRP but you can get them under MSRP. If you shop for a deal you can get a basic XL brand new for like $25k
sickmemes48@reddit
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicle/772375702?city=Knoxville&listingType=USED&makeCode=FORD&mileage=30000&modelCode=FORDMAVER&searchRadius=0&sortBy=derivedpriceASC&state=TN&zip=37931
DaBanninator@reddit
Show me the fully electric Maverick and I'll buy it.
sickmemes48@reddit
It's a hybrid so you don't have to worry about range anxiety.
CarpeNivem@reddit
Can I recharge it at home? Fuck range anxiety. What I want is to never interrupt my day for fuel.
DaBanninator@reddit
It's a Ford hybrid so I have to worry about everything falling apart 😂
sickmemes48@reddit
Certified pre owned gang. My 2018 civic's power train warranty finally just ran out in December.
DaBanninator@reddit
Yeah, I can't want to drive whatever shitbox loaner the local Ford dealer has on the back lot while my Maverick is getting fixed for the umpteenth time 😂
sickmemes48@reddit
But you'd buy a slate 😂
Shmokesshweed@reddit
30k Ford EV truck starting next year.
hells_cowbells@reddit
I'll be very surprised if that thing actually comes to market next year at that price.
DriveRightCarBuying@reddit
Ford is betting the house on this new platform. I’m pretty confident starting for it will be <$32k.
hells_cowbells@reddit
Ford can't seem to do anything right these days. I fully expect it will be delayed or over the target price. And being Ford, it will still likely have 10 recalls its first year.
DaBanninator@reddit
It's going to wipe the floor with the slate POS. LFP batteries too.
halcykhan@reddit
A coworker just bought a clean base model Maverick for $15k. They’re $20k and under all day long.
quietos@reddit
This car is the most DOA shit I’ve seen in this industry. Should be 15k for how barebones it is.
66LSGoat@reddit
If they can’t sell this shitbox EV for less than $20k (without a government subsidy) then it shouldn’t be on the market at all.
The average American drives 15k miles per year. I can buy a $5k 1999 Silverado and almost a 4 year supply of $6 gas for the same price.
Besiege7@reddit
Yeah you should do that
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
Fun to see an auto company version of the classic “make a de-featured phone with the pretense of only paying for what you need, by the way the phone costs as much as an iphone” mobile startup bankruptcy speedrun
newrockstyle@reddit
Kinda wild that the base price is the mystery box here but at least it is shaking up the ev market a bit.
XBL_CNC@reddit
I live in the town where these are being built, that’s all I wanted to say lol
eliav_blom121@reddit
That’s actually smart marketing, get people interested first and drop the price later. If the design holds up and they don’t overcharge, I reckon loads will give it a look.
rudbri93@reddit
Alright lets submit our guesses for actual starting price. Im calling 27k.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
$26,950 base, since they originally said it would be under $20k with the EV tax incentives.
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
None of them will have any infotainment screen as far as I can tell.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
You can buy a mount and tablet from them that will function as the infotainment screen.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
But why
If you're putting in all that effort to have a touchscreen in a car not built for one, I have a 7" touchscreen in my pocket that I can upgrade far more easily
SonovaVondruke@reddit
Because my grumpy antisocial luddite ass likes the option to not have my phone with me 100% of the time.
IsTheShibaInU@reddit
Right, so let's just take a different size screen running the same OS and all the other shit you have on your phone slapped onto a mount for this instead.
That makes no fucking sense
SonovaVondruke@reddit
You don’t know me son.
TrptJim@reddit
If that tablet is going to be automotive grade it will certainly not be cheap, and I am not going to trust a consumer-level tablet to keep up to automotive level temperature ranges and being in direct sunlight.
Skensis@reddit
Gonna love listening to music from my android tablet as I try and use Google maps to find a charging station.
Digital-Soup@reddit
Competing with fan clips from Dollar Tree that use my phone as an infotainment screen.
Best-Cycle231@reddit
No screen? That’s a huge fucking plus and a step in the right direction.
SkellyJelly33@reddit
I'm guessing about the same. Which puts it inline with the cost of a Maverick. Unfortunately I think the Maverick is a much better and more compelling vehicle at that price for most people since it has a radio and basic comfort features, can fit 4 passengers, tow 2-4 times as much, and go much further without needing to stop.
DaBanninator@reddit
Let's submit our guesses for bankruptcy date. I'm going with mid 2028. I'm an optimist
MrBlankenshipESQ@reddit
It's tied to amazon. Daddy Amazon will pump money into it all day long.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Bezos himself is an investor, but I don't think Amazon is.
Maysock@reddit
$29k. They have to keep it under 30 or it'll be completely dead in the water.
I think most models will end up mid 30's, just like the maverick.
idownvoteanimalpics@reddit
It'll be $50k by launch with the way Donnie's driving up inflation
dantose@reddit
MSRP of 25,900, $1500 destination charge, putting the MSRP at a small looking number, and keeping it (barely) in the mid 20s out the door.
Koolklink54@reddit
1 dollar Bob
rudbri93@reddit
I like where your head's at.
Roboticpoultry@reddit
For the base model $27k-$28k. For one you’d actually want I’m guessing somewhere around $35k
Theendisnai@reddit
$31,500
Belennn-@reddit
Sounds interesting, but the price is everything.
GrimmandLily@reddit
Are Slate plants in here downvoting everyone that makes a valid point? They’ve already blown past their original price point on this thing and it’s still basically vaporware.
ALaLaLa98@reddit
Honestly, fuck Slate. They're promoting the "simple and good" car a lot of people want, but they've made it insultingly basic and insultingly expensive.
MrBlankenshipESQ@reddit
Insultingly basic? Homey it's got more bells and whistles than what I'm dailying already! Some of us genuinely are fed up with techspam and want that.
I'm not reserving a Slate myself.....I want an engine and a manual transmission neither of which Slates have....but I like the idea of a truly simple vehicle being on the market.
I also like that they're encouraging DIY repair and they aren't making you subscribe to your own car. There's no app tied to it. It sidesteps a lot of the bullshit that makes modern cars so bad that I actively rejected them for a relic from 1971.....
inlibrary_legsnumb@reddit
I get the point you are tying to make,, but honestly...pretty much anything new these days is going to have more features than a 55 yr old vehicle.
Secondly, we cant put any "pros" on slates side yet regarding how servicing/owning/drivability will be. No one has driven this car. No one has any idea what the REALITY of owning it will be vs what has been promised. This is a comany that has never developed/sold/serviced a car en masse before, to expect them to be better at it than established manufacturers is a bit foolish, in my opinion
MrBlankenshipESQ@reddit
Not necessarily. My exact one, sure, my grandfather didn't order but eight options. It is genuinely very 'base'; part of why I like it so much. But in 1971 someone could have ordered a Chevy truck pickup with air conditioning, power windows, power steering, power brakes, 4wd, several different engines, several different transmissions, four different beds, two rear suspension systems, AM/FM radio, 9000 paint schemes, hell even cruise control was available on them as a dealer add-on. And that's just on a farm truck, which at the time was still thought of first and foremost as a workhorse.
You went for a Cadillac? You could get auto-dimming high beams as early as 1952; many modern cars don't even have that! It had problems and from what I gather GM gave up on it in 1966 only to dabble again in the mid 00s, but still. There were cars built in 1952 that had a feature not found on cars built in 2026 that buyers in 2026 want to have. Who'da thunk?
SOME vehicles from 1971 are less equipped than a Slate, but some of them have damn near a contemporary level of gadgetry factory equipped. It just wasn't commonplace at the time to force every single car to have every single gadget like it is today, so back then you could walk a dealer lot and see a car that didn't even have power steering parked next to the same make and model that had auto-dimming headlights.
Even better, if you sat down with a salesman to spec one out? You could itemize every single option. That's how us old car nuts will find really odd configurations from time to time; someone might have a car with power brakes but manual steering, or one car might have been spec'd with the heavy duty racing suspension then they had the straight six put in it, or another one might have all the fancy exterior trim but the base model interior. Sometimes we'll find the biggest engine and a 4-speed on offer in a car with unassisted four corner drum brakes and the base strippy interior. If it was a feature that could be changed, you could change it, and you could do so pretty much independently of any other changes you made from base.
You can't customize a car like that today.
That kinda ties back into Slate....they are bringing at least a taste of that back. There aren't packages to choose from, you just grab options ala carte. I'll grant the options list for a Slate is quite small, but it isn't like you only have 2-4 'packages' to choose from and then 12 colors.
May not be able to say for sure and it is 125% possible they pull a bullshit on us last second, but they've been saying good things. As I said I'm not reserving one myself but, based on what I have to go on, I like that it's on the market. If it delivers what's promised it is a good thing to have on offer; not everyone's gonna buy one but enough people will that itt'l make everyone else in the industry pause for thought.
If these things deliver and succeed we might just see the big money carmakers go back to letting us peacemeal our F150s and 3-Series and whatnot option by option like my grandfather was able to do with his C10.
That was once Ford, too. That was once Tesla, too. BMW. Toyota.....
......It was also once Packard. Studebaker. AMC. Willys.
There's a lot of dead marques in automotive history, but every single nameplate that's ever been plastered on a car had to start from somewhere.
inlibrary_legsnumb@reddit
I dont want slate to fail,, and im not against the idea of the truck their building. All im saying is that the odds are against a start up that is offering something very base and limited capabilities, for (what we think) will be priced not that much less than proven vehicles like the maverick. We shall see how it is when it becomes something thats actually available fpr purchase
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
Especially when they basically admitted crank windows cost more than power windows but need that because it’s their schtick.
UmaThurmish@reddit
crank windows are dogshit. I remember when I was a kid seeing so many crank window cars. and half of them were broken. that is one thing you do not want, crank windows suck and the mechanism is easy to break.
Riverrattpei@reddit
Yup driver side window on the Miata slightly sags, like half the teeth on the gears are gone, and it gets gummed up about halfway down requiring you to press on the window to help it out or you'll just end up breaking more teeth
I've got a power window kit on the way and I can't wait
Xyrexenex@reddit
I did a 180 seeing the features packed into comparably priced EVs coming out of China. In comparison these feel like the cars coming out of the USSR, laughably basic while still being bad value for what you pay.
TransporterAccident_@reddit
Not only is the price a mystery, no one has driven one. That’s really being glossed over.
LewdDarling@reddit
Is there any room for surprises though? The powertrain will be like any other EV. Suspension/steering will be like any other cheap truck.
I guess they could possibly completely fuck the suspension tuning like Vinfast, but it seems like there's a good amount of engineering behind it so I doubt it.
russthegod@reddit
I had an interview with them for some marketing position. I suggested they show more of the trucks capabilities (off roading, towing, etc) and they told me the car they have doesnt run basically….soooo
TransporterAccident_@reddit
Yeah I realize the deposit isn’t a lot, but this is going to end up being zaperwear. Or they’ll end up partnering with a real manufacturer. I still don’t get the appeal now that the starting price is probably 5, likely, 10k, when it first debuted. You can get a Chevy EV for that cost with power windows and a fucking radio.
Rough_Cancel7265@reddit
I suspect this will be similar to the minimal phones on the market today in the cell phone world. You're sold on the simplicity of the design, the lack of features, just the basics. Then you see the price tag and realize that it's not that great of an idea after all.
guitars4all@reddit
And when you realize you need your phone for insurance card, to enter Costco, got lost somewhere on a time crunch and need directions back. I hate to say it but some of the modern convinces (phone or car) have become necessary
Tankninja1@reddit
I feel like the new and used pickup truck markets are in such a bubble that a super cheap truck might be actually feasible for a time at least.
Previously there were things like the Mitsubishi Mirage that tried the whole new for the price of used business model, but I don't think that worked for anyone that didn't specifically want a Mitsubishi Mirage because the Mirage had pretty marginal advantage if any at all over any used compact sedan.
_Thorshammer_@reddit
This is a master class in how to destroy good buzz and piss off potential customers in order to milk every single possible dollar out of actual customers.
Bobodehclown@reddit
I really hope Chinese EVs make it to the US and sift out all the jabroni car manufacturers.
run_uz@reddit
Can't wait for these to need a Prime subscription & when people share passwords, both vehicles are bricked
KeyboardGunner@reddit
Subscription for what? The car doesn't have an infotainment system or a cellular connection.
run_uz@reddit
You know they'll track the car. I didn't say anything about an infotainment system. No over the air updates? You guys really hit that Amazon crackpipe hard. I also didn't say I had proof,
KeyboardGunner@reddit
If you need to do an update to the car you have to download it to your phone first, then connect your phone to the car. The car does not have any sort of networking built in.
run_uz@reddit
Lol
localtuned@reddit
Lol he's just spreading some good ol fashion FUD.
Geofferz@reddit
Tesla roadster vibes?
Yeah, no, pass.
zoned_off@reddit
$300 deposit vs $50k. Not similar at all.
Geofferz@reddit
Putting a deposit down down an undisclosed amount or undisclosed timeline is just nuts.
Especially as they already stated a price. And now clearly can't honour it (possibly not their fault).
localtuned@reddit
Isn't it only a $50 refundable reserve fee to secure a place online to buy one? And. Wouldn't one just refund it if the starting price wasn't what they imagined?
Only seriously interested parties would do it. Sounds like you aren't really interested. But it's not a crazy idea.
Geofferz@reddit
I'm not interested, no.
localtuned@reddit
Where did you see that?
I found this in the reserve agreement. On this page: https://www.slate.auto/en/terms/reservation
You will be charged a fully refundable one-time fee of $50.00 USD (“Reservation Fee”) when you place your Reservation for a Truck. Placing a Reservation, which includes acceptance of these Terms, constitutes your agreement to be charged the Reservation Fee using your provided payment method. The Reservation Fee is not a deposit, prepayment, or installment payment on a Truck. Your Reservation Fee will not earn interest nor be kept in a separate fund.

I honestly like the idea of the repair strategy. It sounds like this will be a nice car to work on. I'm excited to see if they release all the information and special tools to diagnose it.
I'm hoping it sets a new standard we people buy the car because it's easy to fix and doagnose compared to other vehicles. I'm excited for all of the customizations they say that are coming out.

I just checked slate auto's website, it said $50.

It’s likely going to be the same situation, just a different dollar anount. Brand whos clinging onto straws wants security deposit after major development issues so consumers can “prove” they actually want the car? Loaded.
RBR927@reddit
It’s all relative, for some people that $50k is less than pocket change.

What?
dantose@reddit
it's a "LOL, they haven't even announced the price and they want people to order it?" without realizing they're announcing the price on the 24th and will immediately start taking orders at that point.
wrenchandrepeat@reddit
Yeah I don't want the truck, I just want the price. Wonder how much it'll cost to buy the price.
dantose@reddit
THey're announcing the official price on the 24th and will begin taking order immediately thereafter. Were you expecting them to NOT take orders after announcing the price?

They're trying to pull off a Tesla.

Take my money for something I know nothing about haven’t seen touched or driven, AND we won’t tell you how much it costs. And if the final price is too high I bet we don’t refund deposits. That’s what they call the “complete moron idiot super America package”
Shmokesshweed@reddit
DOA.

I can't see it selling for any less than $27k. If it was $27 with the rebate it would have been a great deal but that doesn't exist anymore.
If they somehow get a base model at $20-22k it'll be great.
I wonder how much the suv version will be over the pickup?
