SS: Related to the collapse of research, or at least the political will to fund research. As the quotes say, this wasn't even an expensive program for the government. It's more obvious in the US, but it seems that Canada is seemingly becoming unwilling to fund basic research like this.
Especially in world of increasingly scarce fertilizer, you'd think leaning into organic research might be valuable!
