Why do so many people sit at the tables on trains on their own?

Whenever I go on trains with my family, there is always a singular person sitting at one of the 4-seaters when there are better options.
It also means that we have to move to another carriages just because someone can’t sit without a table.
Fatal-Eggs2024@reddit
Hoping that an eligible attractive single will ask to join them.
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
Three empty seats mate, could be a hell of a journey.
Fatal-Eggs2024@reddit
🤣
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
I once kicked a single family member out of my booked seat. Could have been an awkward journey if the other three hadn't also packed up and left.
Silly sods thought they had those specific seats booked on every train running that day, not just the train they'd neglected to catch.
55caesar23@reddit
If there are “better options” why do you want to sit at a table?
No one needs to move because your family wants a table. They have just as much right as you do.
Entitled prick
Ok_Neat2979@reddit
I know nauseating .
BDbs1@reddit
I do this because sitting with a table is better than sitting without a table. I can rest on it or sit my drink or phone on it.
It is much more comfortable than the airline style seats with a fold down table.
I (genuinely) hope this helps.
Ok_Neat2979@reddit
Well said
altm2@reddit
Because they need to hog it like the selfish little people they are. The same types that will push you infront of oncoming traffic rather than move over an inch when walking; they are so little and feel so insignificant that these are genuinely wins for them and make them feel smug
TinyElephant999@reddit
Bit dramatic
altm2@reddit
Have you ever been to London? lol, on my tube home today someone gave an elderly woman a seat, and two cockney builders said the old woman had ‘main character energy’ and she was selfish for even getting on the tube.
Arnoave@reddit
This is the least convincing made-up-bullshit-on-Reddit I've ever read
Routine_Ad1823@reddit
Like the selfish people that take their brats on the train?
/S
altm2@reddit
Yeh cause having kids is selfish. Congrats, you’ve also included yourself in the sociopath category. Let me guess, you beat yours or keep them stored in a basement?
Thin_Pin2863@reddit
Why do you feel you're more entitled to a table seat than other passengers?
Routine_Ad1823@reddit
Because muh kids
Ok_Neat2979@reddit
Bet they're the type to expect people to give up their plane seats for them as well. Main character syndrome for sure.
Arnoave@reddit
"why do single people take holidays when there are families who want to book those flights?" Type energy
pipedreamexplosion@reddit
Why do you need to move carriages? Could you and your family not sit without a table? Or are you more important than every other passenger because you are travelling with your family so you deserve a table? In future you can let us all know 24 hours in advance which trains you'll be taking and which carriage you want to ride in and we can make sure that nobody sits in the entire carriage so there's no chance your journey is even mildly inconvenienced by us mere mortals.
Cold_Philosophy@reddit
Better options? Why are they better?
Potato1234567892@reddit (OP)
Better options would be the single/ double seats and that would be better because 1. Less chance to sit next to a stranger 2. You allow other people to have the table who need it more. Now I know people have preferences and stuff but it’s just to show a bit of respect for families and other people
Ok_Neat2979@reddit
Overly etitled parent yet again.
Lunaspoona@reddit
Why do i have to show respect for families i got on first. It was not reserved. It is none of your business why I need the seat. Your entitlement is a joke. You do not get priority just because you have kids. You are not entitled to respect because you have a family. If you want a table, book one. If you have to move compartments, the n you have to move compartments. The world doesn't revolve around your family. It is not for YOU to decide what someone's better options are if they are already sitting there.
aokay24@reddit
But they dont have the table and leg space thats like them saying why cant families drive instead then the train can carry more people.
bright_sorbet1@reddit
Who needs the table more? Why would you need the table more just because you have three friends?
Familiar_Swan_662@reddit
If you need the table so badly why not just ask them to move?
Objective_Sun5553@reddit
there are better options
So what's the problem - why don't you sit at those better options?
just because someone can’t sit without a table
That "someone" being you, or one of your family? I don't understand. Why can't you sit without a table?
Many consider the table to be the best seats on the train, and if they are unreserved then anyone is free to sit at them. If your journey relies on you having a table for the exclusive use of your family, you should book one.
srm79@reddit
I only get a table seat if I need to do work on my laptop, much prefer the other seats
TheNinjaPixie@reddit
i will never understand how people can't manage to sit in near contact with their family on the same mode of transport for a small length of time, excepting ofc infants or a disabled person. I have successfully flown with my family sitting elsewhere and we all survived.
manual_typewriter@reddit
3 other passengers may have booked the remaining seats but the train hasn’t reached their embarking station yet.
ultraviolet47@reddit
You can't penalise someone for travelling alone. A person travelling alone is entitled to sit there as much as a family of four.
ILikeItWhatIsIt_1973@reddit
So someone on their own who 'can't sit without a table' should move because you can't sit without a table? Hilarious.
Front-Bookkeeper2139@reddit
Because we are British and we live by shotgun rules
Mysterious_County154@reddit
bc the table is the best seat on the train and has the most leg room
srm79@reddit
It only has more legroom if you're perched between two seats and have nobody sitting opposite you. There's much better leg room in the other seats
Front-Bookkeeper2139@reddit
Assuming no one is sitting opposite you. I think the other seats actually have more leg room
olivinebean@reddit
I want to put my coffee down and I like it
WillBots@reddit
People like having a table, when I travel by train I always try and book a table seat, usually because I'm wanting to work on the way but even if it's for personal travel, why wouldn't I want space to put my electronics and food etc?
Your salty attitude is down to you not booking early enough to book the seats you want.
garlicandherbsauce@reddit
because people are entitled to sit in a free seat, have you ever asked any of there people if they would mind moving for you and your family? i’m sure a lot of them won’t mind or overall with make it clear to you that they don’t care, as it was free when they sat there 🤷🏻
Pixiebel81@reddit
Just to piss you off. No other reason.
AirConEngineer@reddit
I do this if I really really need a table. I'm not, I pick a window 2 seater so I don't have to sit opposite anyone.
_Jay-Garage-A-Roo_@reddit
They’re more comfortable to work at
Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
They want a table and would like to meet like-minded table-wanters.
Additional-Point-824@reddit
If you want to sit together with a table on a train, reserve some seats.
Gullible-Try-3440@reddit
If you're working on a laptop, it's significantly more comfortable at one of the tables. More generally, you can stretch your legs more (assuming nobody is sat opposite).
llksg@reddit
The tables are the best option for anyone. Like they are categorically the best seats. Unless/until someone comes along with a valid reason to take over the table or gives me a better choice then of course I would sit at a table.
Lunaspoona@reddit
Because it was free and unreserved when I got on. Sometimes I like to work. Sometimes I like to read. Sometimes I like to put snacks and drinks on it.
everybodyctfd@reddit
Tables have more leg room, space to work at on your laptop if needed and to eat food.
geoff_dreadnaught@reddit
Tables aren't exclusively for families of 4 to use. I'll always take one to work on.
your_swindon_lot@reddit
‘Better options’ is entirely subjective.
I like tables as I’m usually travelling for work, and the table gives a bit more room than a seat for laptop
QuarrieMcQuarrie@reddit
Why shouldnt they? Tables are much more comfortable than the alternative.
DesignFar6251@reddit
Because they were free and they wanted a table?
