Anti-AI people will hate you for keeping AI open.

It is absolutely fucking vital that you never listen to them.
Whatever the future now holds, this path we're on over here, this thing we do... totally non-negotiable. No matter how bad it gets. No matter the pitch of the fever leveled against you: the only thing worse than AI panopticon hellworld is AI panopticon hellworld without open options somewhere in the equation.
a_beautiful_rhind@reddit
I'm against the surveillance. You can't really make it "open". Hell yea free and uncensored LLMs + all these other things.
Datacenters for running spy models, dynamic pricing systems, weaponized drones, pre-crime; all while they gobble up the ram, raise my rates and cause computing to be unaffordable... no thanks.
A lot of anti-AI arguments are emotional and attack the wrong problem. Maybe it's by design.

Gaming addicts will try to turn everything into a competitive pride movement of some kind

yeah the whole "we" is hilarious like bro I just wanna chat with my waifu not lead a movement gtfo
VoiceApprehensive893@reddit
what is this post đź’€ we have anti ai circus, ai psychosis, "put ai into everything" circus and now this
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
"This" is a continuation of an open-access-to-computing/info thing that has been around for decades before you were shat into existence. The thing the founder of this site DIED for.
eli_pizza@reddit
This is bad advice. You should consider what people who disagree are saying. There are some criticisms that are bogus and some that are legitimate. Everyone should make their own decision, not blindly build an identity based on being “pro” and “anti” AI.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Wrong. I'm saying the anti-AI forces are going to get way louder and way stronger and way more violent, but the job of keeping it open is too important to fail.
eli_pizza@reddit
It’s a beautiful day today where I am. You too? Sometimes sun and fresh air can really make things seem less dark.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Weird that you read "be prepared" as a kind of ill omen. Says more about you than me, redditor.
eli_pizza@reddit
“Being prepared” for detractors to get “way more violent” sounds a little dark and a more than a little paranoid.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Sounds like you'd rather think pretty thoughts than accurate thoughts. Not a good time for that.
https://www.wired.com/story/us-law-enforcement-warns-of-anti-tech-extremism/
eli_pizza@reddit
Nothing says confirmation bias like deciding the NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau is a reliable source because you already agreed with what they already said. Did you read the article? It’s about law enforcement ginning up reasons to investigate groups Trump doesn’t like.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
I'm sorry that your critical thinking skills are so atrophied that you can't see what's about to happen, that you can't see the move towards Intelligence As A Service is happening in real time. Sama will just tell you to your face. Dario, too. The government, industry, and popular sentiment are all aimed directly against open models. It's reasonably painless now. It will not remain so. There will come a time when you will have to make a choice between abandoning open AI out of fear of punishment / censure / public backlash and staying the course. While it's perfectly obvious to me what you and most redditors will choose - the easy path - I wrote this post to those with a tolerance for discomfort. Not you.
suesing@reddit
You don’t actually do anything but use open models. You don’t contribute a damn thing in creating it.
The only thing you can do to keeping it open is to listen to other people more and taking to your llm less
Fedor_Doc@reddit
He does! He argues on reddit :)
ambient_temp_xeno@reddit
Nobody takes any notice of the anti-ai people anyway.
Just hope that the Days of their Lives level drama between the open source inference projects doesn't eventually collapse it all.
Bharat01123@reddit
Who are those? I thought everybody's excited about AI easing so many things !
sn2006gy@reddit
i don’t make it my personality in either case. Each side has some merits. I mean, we’re all localllamas because we don’t want corporate overlords or to leak info or have them spy on us and a lot of ai haters hate billionaire class owning everything  so we have a lot in commonÂ
lonecylinder@reddit
But that's not hating AI, that's just being an anti-capitalist. There's a difference between "I see the dangers of this tech being controlled by comically evil ghouls" and "ANYONE WHO USES *SLOP* IS A SUBHUMAN MONSTER WHO DESERVES TO DIE, USE YOUR BRAIN R*TARD"
sn2006gy@reddit
They see their job, livelihood or passions at risk. You’re focusing on their outrage. You may not be an artist or a creator or a writer so you may not care. I still can enjoy local ai and respect there is a lot of slop out there.Â
lonecylinder@reddit
Sure, but that's not a reason to be intentionally dense and to engage in misinformation (like the whole deal about water and data centers).
I'm not, but every creator I know uses AI as a tool. Not to write one prompt and get a shitty final product, but as a part of their workflow. It's genuinely useful as a creative.
eli_pizza@reddit
Water use in data centers is a real issue. And the reason people get their numbers wrong is because the AI and data center companies are extremely secretive. Nobody is exactly volunteering to say how much water they actually use, right?
sn2006gy@reddit
datacenter problem is real. They are driving up energy rates. the water problem is more regionalized but real for those regions.Â
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
You're really missing the point of the post, I'm afraid. This isn't about your personal enjoyment of local AI. That is the opposite of the point of this post. I'm saying there is an ethical requirement to keep it open, for the betterment of the species.
thread-e-printing@reddit
Value is slop. Stop larping
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
These people are not going to see it that way. They are entrenching. You can see it everywhere, including but not limited to the press releases of the Department of Homeland Security and FBI.
sn2006gy@reddit
I think it’s healthy. They’re not entrenching against you, they’re entrenching against the giants willing to destroy their future for profit. They don’t care about you and your gpu.
They just want to play games - which prices are going up. They just want to create art of which prices are going up, they want to buy a switch 2 of which prices are going up, they want more parks but more data centers are being built, they want more affordable housing or electricity but AI is getting all the tax incentives and energy discounts.Â
you could learn a lot by not focusing as being a target of their rage but an ally for better aiÂ
Oreare@reddit
“They’re not entrenching against you, they’re entrenching against the giants willing to destroy their future for profit.”
What’s the point in refusing the observable nuance, in that the anger has boiled over into arguably counterproductive ways?
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
You're seriously missing the fucking point of the post.
Last reply.
sn2006gy@reddit
So winning at all cost is your point? i dont really care if you reply or not, you’ve already dig your own battle lines. cute.Â
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
"Winning"? The fuck are you on about? Why is this post being brigaded by GPT-2 bots and Brazilians?
andy_potato@reddit
Reported you for hate speech
sn2006gy@reddit
lol. bye feliciaÂ
suesing@reddit
Posting is welcoming discussion. You just want validation.
Go talk to your llm.
suesing@reddit
You think they refuse to see your perspective. Maybe it’s because you have dispersed to consider theirs
Main_Problem_2696@reddit
Completely agree. Anti-AI people attack open source while closed corporate models are the real panopticon. Open weights mean auditability, customization, and escape hatches. Without that we're just renting our intelligence. Used Runable to compare open vs closed models for a talk. Clean deck in an hour. Open isn't just nice to have, it's essential for accountability. The hate is noise. Keep going.
ForsookComparison@reddit
I listen if they pass the the "are you just influenced" IQ test - which today is claiming every ChatGPT query burns a few gallons of fresh water.
So far nobody passionately anti-ai has paused themselves to consider this and so there is nothing either of us would gain from discussing further. None of us are strong enough debaters to win against a convenient fairytale.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Agreed. It's impossible to reason someone out of a position that they were not reasoned into holding in the first place. The invective is getting stronger and more militant. Strange days.
ForsookComparison@reddit
My tin-foil hat says that the local grandmas in my town don't just take up an interest in closed-loop liquid cooling unless someone manipulates them. But that's for another day.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Watching the pivot from "AI is bad precisely like straws are bad" to "so we need additional governmental bureaucracies put into place in order to curtail it" is... yeah. Not particularly heartening.
Artistic_Bit6866@reddit
Anti-AI sentiment has some very valid points. Been working on language models for 7 years with people who also believed that the capabilities of this type of model were being vastly underestimated. None of that means every application of AI is “good” for society. In fact, some applications and uses by some actors almost certainly represent a net negative.Â
Anti-AI arguments are often ones that align with the goals of open computing.Â
You should always be just as critical to yourself as you are to others.Â
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Every anti-AI argument has within it the seed of the argument for "that's precisely why it should be open."
Artistic_Bit6866@reddit
So rather than saying “never listen to anti-AI people,” you should consider listening to them and finding common ground.Â
95% of people who are pro or anti-AI have no idea how these things work and don’t really care. They are concerned about how it will impact their lives. They’re not opposed to AI (which has existed for a very long time and predates language models), they’re opposed to the same actors you don’t like, who are attempting to monopolize the ecosystem and insert in everything everywhere. “Anti-AI” people and open LLM people have the same enemy. Use that as common ground.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
I'm really not interested in finding common ground with people over matters they have no interest in. I'm not a proselytizer or a popularizer or anything of the sort. I don't want to have discussions about it. I simply want to maintain the garden, to encourage others to maintain the garden, when the gardening becomes uncomfortable. I made this post to encourage others to maintain the garden, irrespective of the noise being generated.
andy_potato@reddit
“You should always be just as critical to yourself as you are to others”
1000x this!
atape_1@reddit
Dude, are you sure you are ok? Like, AI psychosis is a thing.
As far as LLM goes, sure they are cool, I use them locally, I use the big brand stuff as well, I like it, but I hate the whole ethos surrounding, I hate the tech bros telling me i am going to loose my job every 3 minutes, I hate the disregard for anything that isn't "AI".
That still doesn't mean I hate the underlying technology, quite the opposite. You can like the underlying tech and still hate what the tech sector has twisted it in for maximizing profits.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Do not condescend, redditor. I've been in this space since 2017. We haven't really begun to see the blowback. It's not painful now. It's going to get painful.
jtjstock@reddit
If the anti ai people win, then we will be on a level playing field, that is fine
The real problem is if the centralized ai people win.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
Wrong. AI is not leaving. They're not dumping trillions of dollars into the AI-state in order to let it leave. The centralized AI people have already won. We're on DARPAnet right now having this conversation, after all.
jtjstock@reddit
I think you are underestimating the potential backlash
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
I'm absolutely not misunderestimating anything, which is precisely why I made the post. What I am saying is precisely: 1) it is going to get painful 2) it will be necessary to persist through the pain.
Electronic-Bid-7601@reddit
i don't think were at the era where people use ai to tell them what to do when they wake up
jtjstock@reddit
Some people are and it would be hilarious if it weren’t so sad…
Fedor_Doc@reddit
So, do you suggest to not listen to myself? /s
I think that many people who know technology more intimately are more cautios about AI.Â
I see how AI helps my mind to become lazy, makes it easy to try first AI-given solution without thinking about problem myself. I'm terrified by the prospect of people offloading their life choices and thinking to the AI.
I do not like how AI changes the Internet, and makes it harder to connect with other humans.
But I like to learn stuff, and using local AI helps me to learn a lot about how this thing works. The only slop it produces stays in my scripts ;)
scumbig@reddit
Anti ai folks don't really care about the distinction, it's not human, it's like elmo vs rocko.
andy_potato@reddit
You should never stop questioning the things you are doing. And you should never stop listening to other people.
AI is not a deity. And it is not the answer to all our problems. In fact it is the cause for a whole new bunch of problems and as a responsible user you have to acknowledge these problems.
Equal_Giraffe8866@reddit (OP)
You're speaking about something totally unrelated to my post. Get a blog.
andy_potato@reddit
Learn how to express your thoughts properly then. Obviously most people here understand your rant the way I do.

" the only thing worse than AI panopticon hellworld is AI panopticon hellworld without open options somewhere in the equation."
It has nothing to do with enjoyment, beast.
andy_potato@reddit
You’re saying that as if any of it were making sense to the average person.

The path unencumbered but nuance and reflection leads directly to slavery.
And some may prefer it. Like house slaves looking down on the field Slavs.
