On the scale 1-10 how a great idiot must anyone be, to ask that stupid questions? Who's afraid someone to make them "phobic"?
staceppadicazzo@reddit
Phobia is not intended as fear only but as intolerance and anger too.
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
Phobia comes from Greek "phobos" means FEAR. Also, there is no intolerance or anger against them rather than their tactics to SILENCE anyone who disagrees with them.
staceppadicazzo@reddit
Words and meanings evolve. Idrophobia is not the fear of water, but the aversion to water some substances have. Homophobia as intolerance was defined in the 60s. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/22/us/george-weinberg-dead-coined-homophobia.html
Also, there is intolerance and anger, yes. Gay people are still being killed, beaten and imprisoned all over the world.
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
"Words and meanings evolve" By creeping out a word's meaning you don't "evolve" it necessarily. You just making a flare to exist.
In addition, is Hydrophobia. Hydro=prefix meaning water in Greek (as for Phobia already clarified - I believe). However, the AVERSION in water encloses a phobic behaviour against water for some reason, so at some point it's considered correct etyologically. In Homophobia, none.
Also, the definition by George Weinberg was absolutely arbitary, and treacherous. Why? Homophobia has the same idiotic meaning as the word Antisemitic. And I explain:
1) Antisemitic: a label put the ones who spokes or writes agains Jews, no matter if they are correct or wrong. Very fascistic nature of the word. Also, Semites are NOT only the Jews (at least the Jews having blood ancestry from Middle East) but Arabs too. So, when someone calls someone else Antisemitic etymlogically refers to one that is against Semites, that is Jews AND Arabs too. Completely idiotic the base.
2) Homophobic: a label put to the ones who oppose homosexual people, NO MATTER if they are wrong or right. Also, fascistic in a sense. Made from prefix homo, in homosexual, and added the -phobia prefix for fear. Intolerance or anger are not expressions of fear. Ι dislike okras. That doesn't mean I FEAR them. It's WEIRD completely why Weinberg use the affix "phobia" to impose the meaning og intolerance, anger, ot whatever.
I just distinguish similarities with these two terms, and I thought to state them.
"Gay people are still being killed, beaten and imprisoned all over the world." Not in EU countries. Unless, of course, they break the law.

Also building in english means to create something. Yet we call an establishment, four walls and a roof,a “building”. How about that? Words aren’t always used literally thats the point
Taliskerhu@reddit
Hate in these cases deep down stems from fear this different lifestyle is creeping up on and is going to supplant whatever these people considered the 'norm'
Homophobes fear gayness is going to be the 'norm' etc
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
"Homophobes fear gayness is going to be the 'norm' etc" That is a completely different subject.
Taliskerhu@reddit
It's fear of this that spurs the hatred
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
Completely different subject from what we are talking about. This is just ONE aspect of it. A brach. Now, we are talking about the roots.
Taliskerhu@reddit
You mean we're not following you into whatever new tangent. At the root of the homophobe anger lies, indeed, fear.
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
"Words aren’t always used literally thats the point" In English maybe.
mpampistheplumber69@reddit
In Greek too. When it rains too much we say what? Βρέχει καρεκλοπόδαρα(it rains chair legs). No it rains water. Yet we use this absurd term to describe heavy rain
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
Βρέχει καρεκλοπόδαρα is an exrpession. Make someone as AFRAID of someone else is propaganda.
BalkanTrekkie2@reddit
Hate stems from fear. Disgree with what?
PuzDefektas@reddit
Hate can come from loads of reasons. For example people hate vegans because they are annoying not because they fear them or because they don't eat meat...
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
Not necessarily. Might come from love as well. A betrayed love.
This_Lion5856@reddit
They should fix their terminology then because all of this is dumb af
staceppadicazzo@reddit
What do you suggest?
-Passenger-@reddit
homointolerant
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
I'm not.
-Passenger-@reddit
Just my suggestion how to call it instead of phobia
Havent seen that you already suggested the same before me...
Not accusing you of anything
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
I did:
-Passenger-@reddit
I know but havent seen it when I made the comment, otherwise I wouldn't have, because you suggested it already
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
ΟΚ
This_Lion5856@reddit
Make a word that makes linguistic sense
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
Like homointolerance, homodysforia.
mpampistheplumber69@reddit
Thats the word dude. Homophobic means you don’t tolerate the lgbtq. Thats how it’s used by everyone. Not every word is used literally. Ik phobia means fear in Greek but in that case and word it just doesn’t mean that. Get over it
AncientMarinerGR@reddit
"Homophobic means you don’t tolerate the lgbtq." No it's not. Etymologically means you AFRAID oh homosexual. You can't be serious to have BAD etymology to your purpose.
"Get over it" Is that an order?
DanubeBlues@reddit
I think azis made the balkans more accepting of LGBTQ people.

toiletwisdom@reddit
If you are parading about it - 7.
If you are just living your life - less than 3-4

Greece is probably the least homophobic as a whole in the Balkans. If Greece is a 5, everyone else
here is around 6-7 .
Still homophobic though.
ronweasly9@reddit
Nah fam it's relative to global standards. Greece be solid 2 imo
This_Lion5856@reddit
You do understand that "global standards" does not include just Western countries?
ronweasly9@reddit
Sorry I thought 5 means less homophobic
TragicGloom@reddit
Unfortunately were at 5. Maybe 4 in big cities and 6 in small rural areas.
Arijan101@reddit
StPauliPirate@reddit
We can‘t be homophobic. We tolerate this diva
Young_Owl99@reddit
Before her we had Zeki Müren who is actually respected.
Responsible_Trick466@reddit
4 id say for albania. People might het annoyed youre gay but they dont really harm you or go after you
No-Championship-4632@reddit
It looks more homophobic than it really is. It's mostly declarative homophobia by insecure people - many of them think they would seem more macho if they hate gays, some are closeted gays that play homophobic - those tend to be right-wingers, many of them. Many of them in VMRO for example.
DuePositive8957@reddit
I remember seeing a Turkish post that goes “I wouldnt say I’m homophobic. That’d be saying I’m afraid of gays. Whats there to be afraid of a F*ggot” but also there’s many supporters as well. As always our country is split 50 50
oerwtas@reddit
In my childhood I had to deal with a lot of bullying and even people were calling names after me or mocking my speech .
Now that I am a 40+ years old man, completely open, I almost never face discrimination, no matter where I go. People most of the time think I am foreigner (because I am Bosniak and have a really distinct style), they stop me on the street to ask where I am from, some even they try to help me in supermarket choose vegetables as ridicilous as it sounds.
I can say older generations are beyond saving, but newer generations are more open and understanding.
bljujemvatrupecemleb@reddit
i'd say about 6 if we exclude more tolerant outliers, but like 3 or 4 of the 6 points come from gay homophobes and insecure men with political privileges for being state ćaci thugs because ofc the balkans are an insane patch of geography
