After five years of faithful service, my ebike was stolen

Someone broke through my kryptonite chain lock, taking that and my Rad Runner with it.
This sucks. I hate living in a city. I wish there was some upside to a bike being stolen.
Obvious-Ad-2454@reddit
What kryptonite lock ? The biggest one ?
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
This one. Guess I’m upgrading even further next time…
slimypeters@reddit
I recently saw this type of lock on a bike spot but no bike was around. I guess that was stolen too
UtmostProfessional@reddit
Get this one. It’s worth it. https://us.litelok.com/products/litelok-x1
Standard-Pop1206@reddit
no tracking on your ebike after 5 years has to be the hardest thing ive heard why dont you have a tracking system after five years of owning it no air tag nothing?
Fair-Discipline-1005@reddit
I live in rural area, Village, and here nobody steall anything... I can leave my bike unlocked and go in store... Just sometimes, from time to time I look through glass door and check is it everything ok, this is great feeling... I Cities, situation is different...
Impossible-Money7801@reddit
Yeah, small town methheads definitely don’t steal bikes.
Fair-Discipline-1005@reddit
People there don't know what is this, not interested.... People on train station leave unlocked bike and go on train, new nice bikes...😂
Impossible-Money7801@reddit
Ah, you’re not in America.
darforce@reddit
That’s some BS right there. My family lives in a very small town and people will steal anything that isn’t nailed down. Criminals are everywhere and there are a lot of bored teenagers in small towns
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
I think that cities have more professional thieves. Thieves with vans and angle grinders. But you're right, thieves are everywhere you go.
Barbarake@reddit
Nah, it's not BS. There are towns like that, I live in one too. And yes, I do live in the United States.
Zentransit@reddit
Where there tiny pieces of metal surrounding the lock area?
Like signs of sawing...
If not they've picked the lock!
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
No, none at all. I scoured the grass with a flashlight too. They legit just picked it.
For reference, it was a Kryptonite Keeper; here’s LPL’s video on it lmao
Zentransit@reddit
They've really gotta start paying locksmiths more! 😳
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
You know I've never heard of a bike actually being stolen using picking. It's always an angle grinder or a bolt cutter. I know LockPickingLawyer makes it look easy, but maybe an angle grinder is just easier.
Zentransit@reddit
I once overheard a locksmith talking to one of his friends in a bar, talking about how there's a special tool they use to open a U-Lock.
It's not accessible to the average everyday street thief ...
mellofello808@reddit
Only upside is the it will be NBD soon!
Consider getting insurance on the next one. I wish eternal damnation on bike thieves.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
I did get insurance with this one, just still feeling gutted and defeated especially as I had to do the four mile walk of shame home as I wrote this post lol.
Hoping my provider delivers. It’s through Markel, I heard they’re okay with it.
CatDadof2@reddit
It’s mind blowing how selfish people can be nowadays. I feel like the level of consideration of others and their property within many people has sunk within the last 10 years.
ConditionTall1719@reddit
GPS tracker gives great peace of mind...
I have a sino track matchbox sized GPS tracker and I bought a SIM card which costs $1 a month... The sino trac takes more than a month to drain the battery and you can add a switch if you leave for longer.
If someone stashes it or drives away with it I will know the position every time I sms my e-bike and the only place it can be hidden is off-grid and in very populated high rises.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
Always considered this but never pulled the trigger. Guess I learned the hard way
Evening-Resort-2256@reddit
I need a video to see what you described here. Interesting
rshetts1@reddit
That really sucks but on the plus side, now you can upgrade! E-bikes have come a long way in 5 years. The newer ones have more range and better tech. I am guessing that you do not have insurance but doesn't Kryptonite have an anti theft guarantee? You might want to check into that. You may recover some of the loss through them.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
Your first couple sentences made me smile, thank you. :)
I do have insurance through Markel, hoping they deliver. See my other comment re: anti theft through Kryptonite
WattHeffer@reddit
It's very difficult to fulfill the conditions - and satisfy Kryptonite that you did, in order to make a successful claim.
Since the lock was also gone it may not be possible for OP to prove that the lock was defeated.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
Yeah, this part. Per their agreement the lock needs to still be there. :(
Impossible-Money7801@reddit
I realize it’s not for everyone but I’m thrilled to pay $9 a month for bike insurance. $150 deductible and they pay full brand new price if it’s stolen.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
I did have it insured through Markel. Fingers crossed they come through…
Impossible-Money7801@reddit
Good luck!
Wales147@reddit
Same here. I don't understand why people don't take out insurance, my 3k bike is £1 a week to insure and if it does get stolen I get a like for like replacement. There are a few conditions you have to adhere to though, make sure the lock you buy is on their list of acceptable ones and keep ALL receipts!
Zentransit@reddit
I once heard a guy talking about a special tool used to pick certain U-locks.
It's not something the everyday thief would use.
CaterpillarKey6288@reddit
Well that sucks. But now you don't have to worry about how you can get new parts or batteries.
Extremofire@reddit (OP)
I upvoted this immediately while writing my police report lol.

Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
Man that sucks. When your bike gets stolen, you're a heartbroken little kid again.
whattteva@reddit
That sucks. I live in NYC and that is also my fear. So far, I have been lucky, but I'm always weary everytime I lock it outside.
On the plus side, it's a cargo bike so it is heavy as hell without motor power, so if I take the battery with me, the chance of someone riding away with it is likely smaller, but the battery is hefty at 12 lbs and I hate carrying that around if I don't have to.

I wish they had a dock near me.
Odd-Lime-2738@reddit
Yep. Time for all the fun of insurance claims next. Possessions might be fleeting, but filling out forms seems like it takes forever, no matter who your insurer is.
Hope your New Bike Day rolls around soon.
Extreme_Health_9827@reddit
Walking is great exercise. always look at the bight side of life. from monty python flying circus. lol . sorry about your bike though. just bought a diamond u lock a biglufu chain lock a foldable lock an alarm and a cover. hope its enough for a quick publix run.
