This show would have been perfectly fine with zero men. I guess I could accept Joxer, Autolycus, Ares and the occasional warlord who didn't get close, but the rest just ruined things lol
I mean. I don’t think the male characters really ruined things. But those writers deciding to pretend to have Gabs intrigued or sparking romantic interest in Virgil was weird!!! He’s Joxer’s son!!!! That’s like… not right lol.
And even if you look past how that’s a little gross.. at the point of the show.. especially his continued flirting with Gabs in early 6.. it’s like.. didn’t we all know by then?! Like… the whole last 75% of that season is a farewell tour.. and a nod to the fans!! it’s so gay it’s insane. (Given the year 😂).
I guess the best thing you can say about Virgil in this scene is I think it's the apex of whatever chemistry was supposed to exist between him and Gabi, and at least we can blame it on all the hell vapors or whatever everyone is inhaling. I don't think they have any other scenes quite this overt, right?
I know this scene gives us like a brief sexy moment between X&G, but the way the Virgil interrupts them just makes me think of how lesbians are viewed by the male gaze— as if it’s just something to entertain them. It makes me feel so icky I hate it.
It bothers me too. It’s not really even about how men view lesbians, bc good & decent men don’t do that-at least not outloud. I think.. it’s how the media and social culture at the time.. the only way they wound be able to show that kind of sensual moment btwn two women.. was to do exactly as you said.
The fact that the way to legitimize the scene for the Network airing it, would be to make it a male focused kind of naughty. It’s like a reminder, it’s not like that as much anymore. But, yeah..it hits that nerve. I hear ya.
Even the hulking statue, partially-clad gaping celebrants and flames in the background couldn't ruin the X&G moments of this scene for me. It speaks -- and I love it -- for itself, regardless of everything else.
I think Virgil was originally there to have Gabrielle be his “mentor”, especially given his masculine profession (blacksmith) and fighting abilities when juxtaposed with his true passion for poetry / writing.
Maybe we were meant to see him make Gabrielle reconsider her priorities too?
Then … it was all just forgotten and suddenly he was just a hotter Joxer? 🤷♂️ Then he got a boyfriend who got eaten and Virgil then returned to his home planet and was never seen again.
At least Joxer knew where he stood from the start. AND he knew Xena was all there ever could be for Gabrielle. I mean, he made mention of tot several times.
No we used to annoy the crap out of me.. but as with Xena and Gabrielle’s feelings toward him.. he becomes endearing and you simply see him as “oh poor baby Joxer, and his unrequited love”.
Virgil defends ruined the dance scene between Xena and Gabrielle then Lucifer, he join Xena once Gabrielle pull Virgil away and Xena is dancing by herself.

Xena appealed to many different demographics, not just yours. I.find your comment somewhat prejudicial.

💯. Like in most of the scenes he interrupted. I was displeased with Virgil’s interruption.😂
Could never figure out what on earth they were trying to do with his character and Gabrielle. I don’t think Gabs did either.

Now I have to watch Abyss again to see where the Virgil subtext emerged.

I'd rather have Joxer back than Virgil.

Yeah, Joxer had his delusions, but I feel like he didn't interrupt as much. He was just silly
Imissxena@reddit
I always enjoyed when he’d cower away from Gabs upon Xena’s arrival to the scene.

and even during his goofballness, he was a reliable friend and ally.
