It may be because I'm part Japanese myself but I've always admired the guy. His writing is good, but beyond that, he truly felt that modern Japan was so awful that his own life was not worth living anymore. But he was also so charismatic that every one of the people that accompanied him to the military base that he knew he would not be able to take over were going to commit sudoku with him, but he talked every single one of them out of it because despite his pessimism, he convinced them that they all had something to live for.

His death is pretty based bar the assistant failing to botch of his head. He wanted to leave a mark on japan and let everyone know about overwhelming US influence, he did succeed in a way since okinawa returned to japan and the japan self defence force is actually much more powerful now compared to its prime, although there are definitely a bunch of other factors, but mishima brought huge attention to it. Also, he clearly never intended to actually successfully stage a coup, he just wanted to die gloriously, and he died at the peak of his career. He died on his own terms
