Help me choose a football club to support? (from Trinidad & Tobago, complete neutral)
Posted by Queasy_Initiative_86@reddit | AskABrit | View on Reddit | 83 comments
Hey everyone,
I'm from Trinidad & Tobago and I've decided I want to properly get into club football, but I don't have a team yet.
I don't have any family ties to a club, and I'm not looking to just pick whoever is winning trophies right now. I'd rather support a team that I can genuinely connect with and follow for years.
A bit about me:
- I'm from Trinidad & Tobago
- I can watch matches from any major European league
- I enjoy passionate fanbases and great atmospheres
- I like clubs with history and identity
- I don't mind some suffering, but I'd prefer not to support a club that's in constant crisis đ
- I'd like a team that's exciting to watch and has a realistic future
And based on what I've said, which club do you think would be a good fit for me and why?
Feel free to ask questions if it would help narrow things down. I'm genuinely starting from scratch and want to make the choice for the right reasons.
Thanks!

A team local to you on the island? That way you can watch them every week and your ticket money will help the local economy
Garybaldbee@reddit
This 100 times over. Football is, or should be, all about local community and belonging, not glamour and trophies. Watch and enjoy the Premier League, or the Bundesliga or La Liga by all means but the club you support should be the one you can most connect with on a personal, local level. You don't pick your club. It picks you. And of course, this might mean that your club isn't particularly glamorous or successful but so what? In fact, supporting a smaller, less glamorous club is way more fun than one of the giants because you appreciate what modest success it does achieve so much more. As it happens my own club has managed to fight it's way up to the Premier League but for the vast majority of my 57 years it was a small club struggling in the 3rd and 4th divisions. I didn't love it any the less for that and the odd promotion or shock victory over a larger club was just as meaningful and exciting for me as winning the Champions League.
Support your local club and help strengthen and grow football on T&T.
TheeEssFo@reddit
It's not binary. It can be both plus more. I can support the local band at the bar down the street and also go see a national touring artist for the spectacle and then watch Beyonce on TV because I can't afford to travel to the cities where she performs.
Consistent_Ad6426@reddit
This is the way, pick a team you can watch in person and build a connection, itâs better than watching a bunch of millionaires on TV.
neilm1000@reddit
Plymouth Argyle. It's my club so I'm biased, but we've had Trinidadian players over the years.

Watch the World Cup find a few players you like, follow their clubs, pick the one you like best.

I am a neutral who just likes a good game, but if you want history the original twelve teams, way back in 1888, were Preston North End, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, West Bromwich Albion, Accrington, Everton, Burnley, Derby County, Notts County and Stoke.
SparkleWitch525@reddit
The brilliant Shaka Hislop who was from Trinidad & Tobago played for the glorious Newcastle United. As an adopted Geordie I say don the black and white stripes and join us up the Toon đ¤đ¤
We won our first trophy for 70 years last year, and while there will be some suffering (donât talk about last seasonâs derby matches đđ¤) there will be a lot of joy. Ok this last season wasnât our best but we werenât as bad as Spurs đ
The fans are the best and most passionate group of people and the atmosphere at St Jamesâ Park is the best in football.
Howay the lads!!
Mediocre_Profile5576@reddit
Sunderland have had 3 times as many Trinidadian players than Newcastle, so if heâs going for a North East team then we are the obvious choice.
We have a mural for Carlos Edwards at the ALS Fanzine HQ as well.
Mediocre_Profile5576@reddit
Sunderland had Dwight Yorke, Carlos Edwards and Kenwynne Jones, so you should pick them!

OP, thanks for raising your enquiry.
Also would want to look into club footy as well.
The criteria you raised seem valid...but I want to add a couple of mine
I want a club that welcomes Asian fans
I want a club with no history of racism
itsthesplund@reddit
Compared to a lot of football clubs on mainland Europe most UK clubs try to be apolitical, but can have Ultras with political leanings. So you if you are looking for a team that is most likely to be inclusive, then you might want to look at some of the teams here that are more left wing. So in England Liverpool Football Club, and in Scotland Celtic Football Club are the most left wing, and have ties to other left wing clubs around Europe. Another option would be Aston Villa, who draw their fanbase from a very section of the local community, and whose ultras are very anti-racist and antifascist. Another option would be Nottingham Forest who are apolitical, but the club is strongly linked in it's formation to the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, who inspired the club colours.

If you want a link to Trinidad & Tobago, when you qualified for the World Cup in 2006 it was reported that the biggest community abroad was in Reading.
Reading FC are currently languishing in English League 1 (3rd tier) having been in Premier League on a couple of occasions over 10 years ago & also reached the FA Cup Semi Final around the same time. After massive ownership issues that almost killed the club we are finalising stabilising financially so hoping for better things soon.
The joy of supporting a lesser team is any success feels more special. So even if you donât want to go down as far as us I recommend looking outside the big 6.
In the Premier League Crystal Palace are a proper team & have had some long overdue success in the last 2 seasons.
Bournemouth will be playing in Europe for the first time next season. Both them and Brighton & Brentford punch above their weight by being well run clubs.
All the best with whoever you choose (unless itâs a big 6 club đ).

The obvious choice is swansea city

I'm from Trinidad & Tobago,San Fernando,I work in football and I study and live at times in Glasgow Scotland. The people and culture,in a football aspect and non-football aspect is very similar to T&T.If you are in the UK and able to view matches weekly,I would suggest Rangers,Celtic is an option as well..Or you can go down the regular route supporting an English club, one where the town/community is similar to our roots and personality.
gavlar_8@reddit
Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. Yes, it's a farmers league but it's absolutely better than the tourist league down in England.
thunderbastard_@reddit
How deluded can Scotâs be âwatch Scottish football, yeah the leagues not left Glasgow in near 50 years but itâs much better than that English league with money and elite players and a variety of championsâ
gavlar_8@reddit
A matter of opinion I suppose. Supporting an English team would be near the bottom of my list for the reasons stated previously.
And by the way, it's nowhere near 50 years since the league left Glasgow.
Can't beat a Super Sunday when Fulham play Leeds United. This seasons Premier League has been brutal.
thunderbastard_@reddit
Is 41 years not close to 50?
gavlar_8@reddit
No. You should've said 40 years.

Awww I bet it must sooo tough supporting a big 6 team with hundreds of millions of pounds to spend every year, who haven't been relegated in 40 years, and who just won a European trophy the other season. You have it sooo hard

TarcFalastur@reddit
Geologically closest? Well according to the internet Trinidad and Tobago are dominated by clay and sandstone deposits made during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs of the Neogene Period, so apparently that means their closest reference here would be East Anglia. So in that case, Norwich City?Â

ExoskeletalJunction@reddit
I'd pick a local team first if you haven't already. The closest to where you are now, so you can support them at the matches. Doesn't matter how shite they are, football is about supporting your local. Never, ever, ever put a foreign team above your local in priority.
THEN, if you still want to pick a team in Europe, make a list of teams that have the same colours as your local Trinidadian team. If it's two colours, make sure both of them match. So you can wear this team's shirt at your home games there and not look out of place. You'll probably end up with a good list of teams no matter what the colours are. Check in all the major leagues you can watch, including 2nd tiers. From there, I'd pick it based on where you're likely to visit. Is it in a city you want to go to? Does it have a vibe you like? Because if you're planning to visit one day, it's best to make it a place you actually want to visit anyway.

Dwight Yorke was born in Canaan, Tobago, and he was a leading Manchester United player for many years - including winning the Treble in 1999.
iamsolarflare71@reddit
But it was Villa who scouted him đ
Remote_Development13@reddit
Not even scouted, he played against us in a friendly whilst we were on a tour of the West Indies, and Graham Taylor offered him a trial at Villa. The rest is history

True, but he could never reach the peak of his career there.

Sunderland. Watch "Sunderland til I die" on Netflix. They've gained a lot of fans through that programme

I'm from T&T as well, now living in the UK.
Can take this a couple ways, support the club closest to you, if you really want passion, you can go to games, meet fans, and the championship, league 1 or 2 or lower leagues really bring a lot more passion and atmosphere than premier league stadiums these days.
Another thing to note is we, T&T, have been represented by Dwight Yorke at United, Yorke, Jones and Carlos Edwards at Sunderland (reason i followed Sunderland from 07 onwards), Jones at stoke, Shaka Hislop at Westham, Latapy at Falkirk in Scotland and a man who is still well loved there, Marvin Andrews at Rangers, Glasgow. I won't blame you if you started supporting these now, because they've had players from your country in the past.
Suit yourself, glad you're getting into it.

Ipswich Town.
Small provincial town in Suffolk. Â
Sir Alf Ramsey managed the team in the early 60s, where they were (and still are) the only team to win division 2, and then division 1 the following season. Â Sir Alf then lead England to World Cup victory in 1966.
Sir Bobby Robson built a team in the late 70s/early 80s that won the FA Cup and UEFA cup, and challenged for the (then) Division 1 title. Sir Bobby then went on to manage England at 3 world cups.
3 promotions in the last 4 season (and 1 relegation from the Permier League). Â Promoted back to the Premier League this season.
The manager is (super) Kieran McKenna who took over the club in league one 4 years ago, and got us back to Premier League (twice). Â He has a point to prove next season as we werenât brilliant the last time we were in the Premier League.
Passionate fan base, Ed Sheeran is a minority owner of the club, and the future is looking good.
T&T wise, Carlos Edwards is a former player, and still works at the club in an ambassador role.
BitterOtter@reddit
In the last year I was coerced into supporting a premiership team because I'm not really a football fan but kept winning (or at keast being top two) in a fantasy football league because I'm silly competitive and like data. The rules were it had to be one of the three teams promoted last year (Leeds, Burnley, Sunderland) so I chose Sunderland because the person who insisted I pick a team is a Newcastle fan (for OPs benefit, the two cities are located very close to one another and they are big rivals). Sunderland have also been above Newcastle nearly all season and won a spot in one of the European leagues, which Newcastle did not. I haven't been smug about this at all.
Point is, pick a team that somehow calls out to you, and it doesn't have to be in one of the top leagues (although it does if you want to watch it on TV!). I would say look at where the Trinidadian diaspora is concentrated in the UK and who they support, but they're mostly in London with some midlands concentrations too, so the inevitable clubs will be Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Aston Villa, so maybe you choose to go a different path to them.
As a final thought, there is a Trinidadian national team player, Rio Cardines, in the Crystal Palace squad (born in the UK, but of Trinidadian descent). He hasn't played much since he joined, but with Palace having lost a lot of players and the manager changing he might get more of a run out.
Active_Definition_57@reddit
Rio Cardines grew up in the same town I grew up. There were 2 brothers called Cardines 3 or 4 years above me in secondary school who I believe were quite good footballers. I strongly suspect they are related e.g. father and uncle or 2 uncles.

Iâm going to give my honest opinion here: Support your local team in Trinidad and Tobago. There is NOTHING that beats actual going to a stadium and watching a match in person. The experience is tremendous, regardless of the status of the club.
Watching on TV is fine, if you just canât get to the match or if youâre watching as a neutral, but itâs a MILLION times less enjoyable than being there, watching your team with your own eyes.
The majority of Football clubs were founded by and for communities. Itâs about identifying and connecting with your local community. Taking pride in your neighbourhood, city or region, regardless of how good or bad your club is. I support a Premier League team, but I donât support them because they mute in the Premier League (or the old First Division as it was when I began supporting them - and we were mediocre even then). I support them because theyâre my home town team, my local club. Iâve been through 3 relegations with them and 3 promotions back.
It never ever crossed my mind that I could or should support a team because theyâre good.
Support your local team or a team from where your family is from, where you have that personal connection and identity, you develop a love, a bond, a sense of belonging that is deep and emotionally rich. The club becomes part of you, part of your identity, you love it like itâs your family, you think about it every day. Itâs far more fulfilling than supporting a team halfway across the world.
If you give a local team your support, youâre putting back into your community, that could potentially help your club get stronger. Imagine how much stronger leagues around the world would be, if people showed up at their local clubs.
If people want to follow a particular club in other countries thatâs fine, but youâll have a much richer and enjoyable experience if you primarily go and support a club thatâs local to you. Youâll end up living and appreciating football even more. đ

Has to be Celtic. The first Northern European team to win the European cup (champions league). Always on the right side of history, itâs not difficult when your rivals are racist and hate catholics/muslims. Youâll get a trophy party basically every season. This is how it feels to be Celtic, champions again as you know, Brendan Rodgers is here for 10 in a⌠actually forget that last sentence.
