Flairs?

What’s the point of the flairs? Are they actually helpful or is it just a dick measuring contest? I’ve seen some crazy ones like “first class medical” lol
caelum52@reddit
lmao

secondaryminimum@reddit
How big is mine?
ScathedRuins@reddit
can someone explain to me why she is being made fun of for that? i feel like i’m missing out on some big joke
IndependentAlps9649@reddit
Not only that, why did she leave her displays up full brightness the entire time? It’s literally just cringe influencer slop to get engagement.
CommonRequirement@reddit
Also her displays are comically on the max setting and turning them down isn’t a “big change” so she looks clueless, but she said she was having an issue where reducing the brightness at all would make them go dark.
Shamrock132@reddit
She has a history of uploading and live streaming some pretty cringy moments.
HotCompany8499@reddit
Because it’s a fucking yapathon. “I don’t wanna make any big changes on short final” but she has time to tell her life story.
“Tower, Cessna 69, can I get lights high please?” That’s all you need.
ScathedRuins@reddit
i mean, sure, but there’s plenty of pilots yapping on the frequency in my experience, she seems to be getting a disproportionate amount of hate for it. I get pilot influencers kinda suck so I thought that was more the reason
secondaryminimum@reddit
She’s a cringe influencer.

I’d really like to have 17 pieces of flair but that’s just not my style
JumboTrijet@reddit
14 pieces of flair is the minimum
DisregardLogan@reddit
I’m pretty bad at landing
ab0ngcd@reddit
Ooh! I should do this on aerospace vehicles I have designed parts for or provide manufacturing engineering support for. B-52 767 757 Brave2000 BeechStarship PiaggioP180 F20 YF-23 F-22 F-35 X-59 U-2 C-130 P-3 AtlasCentaur
TheKgbWillWaitForNo1@reddit
I think its good. Helps you know who is more trustworthy. An answer from a CFI will be more credible than that from a PPL flair
SSMDive@reddit
Except there is zero certification. I could go put ATP/IA/CFI in my flair and there is no way you would know it is all lies.
Jwylde2@reddit
Yeah this is bullshit. Just a reason for holders of higher certs/ratings to try and “win” an argument by making arguments from authority because they can’t win any other way.
I’ve worked for people that pull that shit. You have the better answer, and they retort with “I’ve been doing this for x number of years”, “I outrank you”, etc. Captains have driven planes into the ground because the FO had the answer, but was too afraid to override the more experienced Captain.
Arguments are either good or they’re bad. Citing to credentials is a bad way of making an argument.
Mispelled-This@reddit
Lol. During preflight brief for my last rental checkout, I asked the CFI what they wanted to see, and they replied “you have more hours than I do, and you know what you need to learn. Let me know when you’re ready for me to sign you off.”
grouchy_ham@reddit
I would disagree with this. Just because someone is a CFI doesn’t mean they are more knowledgeable the a PPL. There are tons of PPLs that have far more knowledge and experience than young CFIs.
My last BFR was a perfect example. The instructor was fairly competent, but not particularly experienced and was unaware of a lot of things. We actually talked at great length about some of the things that she lacked knowledge on. Much of her knowledge came only from the books and lacked any experiential application. Her understanding of the physics of flight was largely rote memorization.
Qualifications can only measure to a point. They require some bare minimum level of knowledge, but not necessarily an in depth understanding.
capnbuttcrack@reddit
How do I see the full flair?
Illustrious-Yak7044@reddit
Any raging rampers in here?
deathstarrr@reddit
Thanks for reminding me to update it.

Can kinda tell you a bit about the users background. Are they an ATP so there's a slight chance they know about jets, do they have an EASA tag or something else to show they're one of the non-US users here, do they have a drone "pilot" flair so we know to ignore them, etc.
yawara25@reddit
And a DIS flare to remind everyone that we exist :)
Timely_Entrance_7931@reddit
I don’t know what that is.
Cant_Work_On_Reddit@reddit

They’re roughly equal parts fun, bragging, and a very fuzzy signal of reliability on some questions.

Is that why you have “PPL” in your flair? PP Large?

No, that’d be PPXL.

My favorite are the ones that are unnecessarily long, for example: "PPL IR PA28 C172 SR22 HP COMPLEX IR TW KABC." It's as if people feel like they need to fill up the space since they don't have many ratings.
nyc2pit@reddit
It's like the alphabet soup nurses that list every degree they've earned back to their kindergarten graduation (with honors)

Anyone other than independent CFIs looking for students putting their airports in their flairs is wild to my privacy-conservative sense of internet behavior
CSGOTRICK@reddit
hey now
CharAznableLoNZ@reddit
I use old.reddit.com so I never see any flairs. Not sure if I can even interact with them.
taxcheat@reddit
Flairs show up fine on old.reddit.com.
Works on desktop, and I'm using mobile Firefox right now. The old reddit redirect extension ensures trashy new reddit never appears.
PunkerTFC@reddit
Sure you have ratings but what is your STATUS?

sailing_in_the_sky@reddit
I usually only get one flare per flight
PilotBurner44@reddit
My stick is like half a dot low on glideslope.
Not great, wish it was a little higher, but eh, it gets the job done, even if touch down a little prematurely.
MaxAv3187@reddit
Careful…you can really hurt yourself coming in on final like that
Gabriel_Owners@reddit
Never seen Office Space, have you?
cptnpiccard@reddit
Fifteen is the minimum okay? Now if you feel that the bare minimum is enough, then okay.
Mispelled-This@reddit
We want you to express yourself!
mvweatherornot@reddit
I have my type ratings so if someone asks about a specific aircraft or mission it shows I have some credibility
whitebuffalo57@reddit
Me too!
Jwylde2@reddit
So that pilots with higher certificates/ratings can attack your credentials when you comment with facts that debunk what they’re saying, or you post up good advice that they don’t agree with. Also to promote pilot snobbery.

Thomas-Ligotti97@reddit
I see it right there
skylaneguy@reddit
Some of the flairs here are out of control… I made a post about this last year.
ammo359@reddit
What’s missing is a reason they need to be in control. Difficult to articulate harm from someone including their FCC license in a flair. A wise mod team shies away from regulating things that do not cause harm.
minfremi@reddit
Making fun of my recent achievement?
Gabriel_Owners@reddit
Almost all reddit communities have unmoderated flair.
skylaneguy@reddit
Yea, I’ll hold my breath on the last sentence.
skid_turning_final@reddit
I see no problem
Laxboarderchill@reddit
What would you suggest if you were flair patrol?
skylaneguy@reddit
I’m not advocating for moderation I’m just in agreement that some are wild lmao
m4a785m@reddit
What makes some wild?
lafcrna@reddit
I think there should be a “pilot wife” flair.
x4457@reddit
Flair is user configurable. Be the change you wish to see.

Aromatic-Run-287@reddit
What is a flair in this context?
Katana_DV20@reddit
Its the small rounded-corner rectangle you see under peoples handles showing their flying qualifications. Example:

Mine started out as a joke and I put the medical in there because I don’t take it for granted. Special issuance gang.
chaoticcole_wgb@reddit
No idea what youre talking about
EngineerFly@reddit
I try to flair before the airplane reaches the ground. It’s part of my strategy for ensuring that all my planetary encounters are tangential.
alphox01@reddit
Oh thanks for that, you reminded me I need to update mine!
zarmril@reddit
I see no problem. A flair highlights one's best and most important qualifications, of which you surely care about.
SenileCFI@reddit
Yeah we should have followed through with the April 1st verification process proposal by the mods
Harry73127@reddit
I kind of see it as a “I’m active enough on this sub to have flair” thing. Like in other sports subs if someone is talking shit without any flair, I know they’re just trolling
Mountain-Captain-396@reddit
Literally anybody can get a flair though, its not exactly hard
flyghu@reddit
Not what she said!
ammo359@reddit
It takes a minimum amount of optical effort, which is a surprisingly good filter to detect drive-by trolling.
usmcmech@reddit
Generally speaking the more pieces of flair the more experience a poster has. The more experience a reply is based in usually the better the advice. *
Specifically the broader a pilots experience the more likely they will be able to give you good advice. *
Big-Carpenter7921@reddit
Flares are usually to stop a missile lock
