I need a reliable car, any suggestions?

Hi! I currently own a 2006 vw beetle cabriolet and I HATE it, I feel like I’m constantly throwing money at it and it keeps breaking.
I’m looking for something dependable that also looks quite nice, I am a big fan of saloon and coupe body types so that would be ideal, but I’m open to anything.
I am just looking for something that I can service once or twice a year with minimal big issues.
I would prefer to avoid electric cars and newer cars that cost an arm and a leg for any repairs.
I’ve been looking at Toyotas and other Japanese cars as I’ve been told they are the most reliable but I don’t know if I’m looking in the wrong direction.
Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

How many times will people ask? How many times will people answer Toyota, Honda, maybe a Mazda?

Daewoo Lanos, Lada Granta.

Fixing an old car is still cheaper than making payments on a brand new car, its the inconvenience and down time where you need another solution that got me.

Most of the Toyota hybrids are going to be good, although my understanding is that it’s harder to get parts and service for Japanese cars in the European Domestic Market and you may be paying a maintenance premium because of it even though they’re they’re more dependable than, say, old TDI and MPI Volkswagens/Skodas.

Honda Civic

Any 20 year old car is going to need ongoing help to keep going.
Even a Honda Civic is going to need wheel bearings and exhaust work and whatnot as it gets to be ancient

Saloon? I’m assuming you’re not in the US. What country are you in? Most people here are from the US and will give you US recs.

I’m in the UK, so I think it’s a sedan in the US?

Cars break. It’s just a fact of life.
There’s no car make/model that doesn’t have maintenance issues once they’re about 10 years old. Some more than others, but eventually everyone starts replacing battery terminals, air conditioning compressors, power steering pumps, door lock actuators, etc.
The used car market might look different in your country vs mine (USA), but here’s there’s practically nothing under $15,000 that’s going to give you the “service once or twice per year” experience.

Corolla, civic? Any years almost really. Crv is mostly reliable too. A few other names but corolla or civic would be one of my firsts. Cheap and reliable.

As long as it's not a TTV6 engine or the UA80 transmission. Those are horror shows.
