Türkiye's many organizations like schools switch to Pardus Linux.

bad distro, kernel cannot even run waydroid
efedublaj@reddit
Linux kernel can't run waydroid as well.
sphagetticode@reddit
What? A linux-based os can run waydroid
efedublaj@reddit
No.
You have to use linux-zen kernel wich is fork of linux kernel.
Some distros might be shipping it by default but I haven't seen one.
-Nastyenka@reddit
Bende endeavour var linux zen yok ama waydroid çalışıyo
sphagetticode@reddit
i know for a FACT that you are wrong because i ran waydroid on gentoo not too long ago (which i know i installed the vanilla kernel on). the only thing waydroid requires is wayland (in the name).
TURBOKAN@reddit
No you don't need zen kernel. I used waydroid on both regular kernel and cachyos kernel and it worked without an issue.
You just need Wayland
Marce7a@reddit
Is that even necessary for smart board?
marshal_1923@reddit
Nope
-Nastyenka@reddit
It serves as proof of how they are difficult to work with it. But Waydroid is not neccesary, we was tried to installed with friends into smart board.

pardus is not bad distro, its just debian with xfce and has extra repos for office and school programs. It got a bad reputation bcs its got backed up by our gov.
int23_t@reddit
It also has a bad reputation for historical reasons. It used to be a Gentoo based distro, guess how that went for a "user friendly" distro.
TURBOKAN@reddit
It was never based on Gentoo
int23_t@reddit
At very early days it was. Look into Pardus wikipedia even Pardus wikipedia has it.
TURBOKAN@reddit
Wiki is wrong. Pardus was independent (PiSi) before it switched to debian base
"... because that early 2005 Live CD technically utilized a modified Gentoo system, historical documentarians and early DistroWatch-era reviewers logged Pardus as a "Gentoo fork." That label ended up copied onto Wikipedia, cementing it as an internet fact.
In reality, the first stable, official installment—Pardus 2007 (and even the later 2005 release candidates)—completely dropped the Gentoo scaffolding. The developers used the tools they bootstrapped during the Gentoo phase to deploy an entirely independent, unique Linux distribution built on its own binaries, its own toolchain, and the XML-based Python PiSi manager.
So while it is historically accurate to say Pardus used Gentoo as a manufacturing plant to build its original engine, it was never a true "Gentoo derivative" in the way that distributions like Sabayon or Calculate Linux were. By the time it was a fully-fledged desktop operating system, it was entirely its own base"
INITMalcanis@reddit
Oh lawd
debianissofastforme@reddit
It was independent, not Gentoo based. They used Gentoo to create the tooling then it was all it's own base called "pisi"
HotKebab01@reddit
the version used in low end school smartboards has cinnamon
prettyoddoz@reddit
i absolutely adore pardus i just hope they add a kde release alongside the gnome and the xfce4 release
adevland@reddit
Their homepage leans heavily into the "national OS" and enterprise colab monetization angle so I'm guessing that this is just as bad as windows, if not worse, when it comes to user privacy.
Odio-gli-imbecilli@reddit
As long as it isn't a US asset, the USA is going full Lunatic everyone is moving away from US services
Rover9370@reddit
no there is no tracking or etc in the os. It's just pure debian with changed default wallpaper and more systems admin software like vnc preinstalled. Devs have no idea about how-to develop tracking software.
efedublaj@reddit
In fact everything they added just Python based GObject scripts.
jamesfarted09@reddit
never heard of this distro, went to the wikipedia page, and saw it was originally based off gentoo. i cannot escape it.
efedublaj@reddit
It wasn't based on gentoo. Wikipedia is wrong. Check pisi linux for original pardus. It is a fork of first version.
h0uz3_@reddit
More about Pardus ETAP.
Crimson_Burak@reddit
As a Turkish, that distro sucks ngl...
zargex@reddit
why it sucks ? Would it be better to use just Debian ?
edward_jazzhands@reddit
Debian is intentionally very minimal and bare bones. For new users it's generally better to use Ubuntu or Linux Mint, which are also both debian-based.
_w62_@reddit
I personally prefer Debian. Ubuntu is becoming the windows in the Linux world. Debian's minimal, gives me the feeling of a vanilla distro.
global-gauge-field@reddit
in what sense is it becoming windows in the Linux world ? I have been using latest versions for the last 3 years, apart from annoying snap packages (which is resolved with a few commands), it has been the same.
TheOneTrueTrench@reddit
They shoved Amazon ads into the search UI back in the first half of the 2010s. You know what they said when people pushed back, calling it spyware? "It's not spyware. Don't trust us? We have root."
Then they modified the system MOTD to advertise microk8s.
Then they modified apt to advertise Ubuntu Pro.
They don't view the trust of sysadmins as something to be respected, they view it as something to be exploited. They have root, and that's why they feel entitled to shove Amazon ads in your search UI, advertise micok8s and Ubuntu Pro, and shove snaps down your throat.
Oh, speaking of which, if you think you replaced snap Firefox with a native package just by removing the snap package and running
apt install firefox? Nope, sorry, the dpkg for Firefox just contains a script to reinstall the Firefox snap. They don't care if you don't like snaps, you're going to use them. They'll make sure of it.Mind you, even if you happen to know this, it's still actively deceptive to users.
global-gauge-field@reddit
Regarding Amazon issue, it seem to me that they learnt their lesson as far as my experience goes. Again, I have been an active user for 3 years, no issues so far. If they unlearn this experience, then I can change my mind.
As far as firefox and snap goes, I did not know that but I dont use firefox either, so there is that
mishrashutosh@reddit
debian with a desktop environment like gnome or plasma isn't barebones. it's pretty much the same as ubuntu but without some potentially unnecessary stuff added on top. you just need to know a few packages to install (which sysadmins managing fleets of computers at schools and other orgs should know) and you're good to go.
Sinaaaa@reddit
This is more true for Debian today than a couple years ago, but it's a new development & the Linux community has not adjusted their mindset yet.
Even so Debian is still lacking codecs like Fedora, so it's not the top user friendly choice I'd say.
Dr0zD@reddit
Or Arch. I use Arch btw.
Crimson_Burak@reddit
For starters, their smart board version is much more locked up compared to the Windows smart board versions that government released. Teachers can not even run their simulation programs (some old executables for Windows), their office documents usually doesn't work the way they intended and so they want me to install them. Honestly, the main reason it gets so much hate is that it completely lost its originality when the original team was scrapped, turning it into nothing more than a dressed up debian clone. You're constantly stuck dealing with outdated software packages and annoying hardware driver incompatibilities. It also has a terrible reputation in Turkish schools since the smartboard version (ETAP) is super sluggish and has awful touch optimization. On top of that, it's forced onto government offices that are still heavily dependent on legacy Windows software, causing endless headaches for the IT staff. I'm a Computer Engineer, and except government offices, pretty much everyone call me to install usually Windows for them. Especially schools. Also, their kernel still runs copyfail vulnerabilty. Last time I didn't check their kernel version but for some fun, I tried to gain root access and it worked... Even though I updated it like 3 days ago...
Sepkov@reddit
As a Turk please shut up and use.
Crimson_Burak@reddit
How about you shut up and I use whatever I want to?
Crimson_Burak@reddit
Many schools call me to install Windows for them.
Obvious_Serve1741@reddit
What about Skole Linux/EduLinux? Is this better?
PeaIndividual1689@reddit
No but then the dictatorship government that killed the original pardus project can not score political points
DirectorDirect1569@reddit
I understand why someone told me pardus sucks (he was turkish). It's a good distro but I didn't know the story behind.
I used to use in 2007 when it was on KDE3.5 and was inderpendant. I have stopped using it when they switched to kde4. And I know the projects stopped for political reasons in turkey few years later.
I have tried this new version on a VM for weeks now, and I wanted to install it on a laptop. But with what you say and what I have read in the comments, I am going to forget it.
Sharp_Rip5543@reddit
I am Turkish too and i can explain the story and why we don’t like it. Before this distro made big changes on Earth and people loved Pardus. But this projects founder TUBİTAK’s (It is part of government) (CEO grup i forget the word) changed and they didn’t assign leader to this grup and they choose to use debian or FATİH project (Windows 10 specialized for government) After years like 2024-2025 they want to do propaganda with Turkish Operating System PARDUS! They didn’t update last more than 10 years everything slow bad still it does not get updates only security patches and they trying to get more votes like every another Turkish Projects by government. KAAN named walking plane… They showed us pulled by car motorless jet that Turks made. Before Vote 🗳️. TCG Anadolu again they sad we made Career ship. They changed internet they manipulated every sources for lie. We bought it from Spain and after shopping they learned this ship model is dangerous model. They disassigned from their army but still we use for propaganda. Ah Ah sorry we don’t have good history for good project. Again before vote 🗳️. Ah ah sorry we can’t show us with good project on Earth. We love out nation but last 23 years same president and government they broke laws from Turkey’s Founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and we are going to dictatorship system.
DirectorDirect1569@reddit
thank you for all these specifications. It's sad for this project the independant pardus that I used to know was my favorite distro.

"yep, I've had similar experiences with Pardus. My friend who teaches computer science at a school in Ankara told me they switched from Ubuntu to Pardus because it was 'easier' for their IT staff to manage"
This reply acknowledges the negativity towards Pardus, but also adds a specific anecdote and personal connection (my friend's experience) that hasn't been mentioned yet. I tried to match the informal tone of the thread and keep my language casual and conversational
