Most of the GDP in the united states is owed to the fact that their housing is really shit and they keep rebuilding the same houses over and over cause they break really fast
As opposed to the UK where they just keep the same houses after scraping off the previous resident who melted to the floor in the heat waves that they can't manage to get AC for.
What got Carney elected was PP waffling on Trump's tariffs, not Trump saying 51st state. If PP hadn't been wishy-washy on that he would have won. It was his refusal to take a clear stance on the trade war that lost him the election.
For the average Reddit political armchair strategists maybe. You overestimate how informed the average voter is. All it took was for the widely unpopular Trudeau to step down and a smear campaign that PP was Canadian MAGA for the election to swing. The average voter simply doesn’t give a shit about tariffs and don’t even know what the word even means.
Again, that only happened because PP waffled on taking a firm stance, which made him look weak. If he'd just immediately taken a position the messaging never would have worked. It was not Trump's bloviating nonsense that lost PP the election it was his tepid response.
The path to smear him as being in bed with Trump only opened up because he didn't take a stance and consequently got boxed into one by the Liberals.
PP doing a 180 and showing just how little he understands about politics and most everything else was why Carney had such a strong last-minute win. It had very little to do with Trump other than PP cosplaying.
Trump was a major if not the most dominant factor in the last round of Canadian elections. The whole race flipped exactly on tariff week.
On an unrelated note, Canada's economy was stagnant since the early 2010s. It's been flat lining adjusting for inflation but not population (which has grown). The last decade and change Canada has been getting objectively more poor year after year. Trump probably extended this another decade which is kinda of funny and kind of sad at the same time.
Funny you say that because even PP did not want to scale back immigration numbers. The PPC was the only party that said they will put a hard cap on immigration.
PP was only attractive because the alternative was Trudeau. Trudeau stepped down right on time and the Liberals fielded a candidate with a mind-blowing resume. I think Carney wouldve won even without Trump saying what he did.

Lmao Canada's GDP per capita only increased 3% over the last decade. Real GDP per capita was -1.4% in 2024 alone. The median Canadian consumes as much PPP adjusted wealth per year as the bottom 20th percentile of Americans. The median actual individual consumption of Canadian citizens is ~66% of their US counterparts.
Canadian economy has stagnated and become shit under Trudeau and the collapse of the oil industry, which happened even before he came to.power. All I'm saying is that the average Canadian is better off than the average Alabaman.

Wait till you get cancer and then see how great the healthcare is. Or get in an accident. I've known several people around me who found themselves in those predicaments and they lost all their money. American healthcare is exactly for what you said it was for: for looking at a bump on your dick. But if you got something serious that needs long term care, then it's basically f you.
People who have never been sick or injured do not know the multiple layers of fuckery your provider and insurance company play "hot potato" using every trick to charge you a whole lot for small petty shit, then insurance weaseling out of paying because "out of network" (you weren't told the x-ray guy bills as a separate company) or "experimental" if some drug or whatever hasn't been out that long.
You find out all this shit out AFTER you get the bill to pay most of it out of pocket
Hi, multiple bowel resection, insurance from my work covered it fully for the 3 different week long inpatient visits I had for the situation without any lip or BS along with all the myriad of testing and medication, some of which I still take to this day.
Every single insurer out there has their in network providers listed on their own websites and even then out of network is usually at a minimum 80% coverage.
Unless you somehow found the world's shittiest insurance you aren't going to have an issue.
These figures are grossly misleading and if you think that wealth in the US is confined to a few billionaires in New York or Miami you are kidding yourself.
I've seen the yardless houses that Brits live in, sharing walls with neighbors. I've also seen beans on toast considered a delicacy. Something isn't adding up.
Because wealth refers to money in the bank and assest(IE homes) doesn't reflect lifestyle as effectively as yearly income. It just means Americans spend their wealth rather than saving which is a statement of consumer habits and housing market inflation not reflection how much a American can buy yearly vs a European and how they live their daily lives.
Americans make dramatically more even at the median accounting for tax and insurance an American is making a sizable about more per month to spend. Europe in median disposable income. The chart just means Europeans have their net worth tied up in their houses equity.
Sure, and you probably want to live in a high GDP/capita country vs a low one. But neither that nor median household disposable income are strong measures of quality of life.
Fair enough, your disposable income simply doesn't matter much right? The size of your living quarters, also irrelevant. That comfort of a temperature controlled environment doesn't matter after all, you can just tough it out even if 3,000 of you drop dead every time there's a warm week, only the elderly mostly, and what are you supposed to do about the weather anyway. And sure, the consultations are free, the prescriptions are free, the appointments are free, so what if you get cancer and you'll likely die from it, at least the bill never came.
Gas prices nearly twice what we pay but driving's bad for the climate anyway, really your government is helping you be greener whether you asked or not. Industrial electricity at four times the rate is why your steel works and car factories are gone, but those were dirty jobs, services economy now. Wages haven't moved since 2008, who's keeping count.
Thirty arrests a day for tweets is a fair price for civility. Beats living somewhere people can just say what they think.
And really, what does the disposable income gap matter when the holidays are statutory. Twenty eight days off a year is brilliant, doesn't matter that the flight is out of reach, the gas for the drive is out of reach, that nice meal at the end of it is out of reach, the holiday itself is what counts, on the books, in writing, guaranteed. Same with the coverage, universal on paper, that's the important part. Same with the schooling, longest in the developed world, top marks for hours logged.
It's just managed decline, you understand. Who cares about GDP?
Fair enough, your disposable income simply doesn't matter much right?
No one said it didn't, just that it's not a strong measure of quality of life.
Why do you think I didn't include those in my comment?
Gas prices nearly twice what we pay but driving's bad for the climate anyway, really your government is helping you be greener whether you asked or not.
I also didn't include gas prices, but I'm not sure they strongly correlate with quality of life either. In a country where most things are far closer, and public transit is actually worth it, gas prices become less relevant, I bet.
Thirty arrests a day for tweets is a fair price for civility. Beats living somewhere people can just say what they think. And
Didn't include that either.
I know you're being sarcastic, but this is kinda correct? I bet it's probably better for people's mental health to have 28 guaranteed days off, but spent on smaller vacations, than to fight for 10 days and force your amazing vacation to Disney Land into those days.
Same with the coverage, universal on paper, that's the important part. Same with the schooling, longest in the developed world, top marks for hours logged.
What do you mean by "universal on paper"? Do you think it's secretly not?
It's just managed decline, you understand. Who cares about GDP?
If you couldn't live in the USA, would you move to China with their glorious second place in GDP? What about India, number 6?
Those stats are bullshit lmao. Morocco ranks #1 in life expectancy, japan/singapore in murder rates, gun violence also singapore/japan, prisoner population per capita is japan/iceland, healthcare coverage is taiwan/canada, I could go on. All of these are easily disproven by a simple google search, but if somebody types “sources” on the bottom of a random imgr link you morons eat it up.
It isn't saying the UK is #1 in the WORLD in this metrics, so the comparisons to those other non-US states you listed make no sense whatsoever. It's saying if the UK was a US state, how would it compare to other US states.
You can't read and you're calling other people morons lmao.
You can’t hide your embarrassment that you came in so strong and yet entirely wrong because you struggle to read. Maybe I shouldn’t have used paragraphs in my post.
Embarrassed? Yeah i’m real embarrassed I misread some retards cherry picked america bad piece on the fucking 4chan subreddit. They’re barely in the top ten for HDI on your list anyways, which is the only measure that matters in the first place. Like paid maternity leave and “pupil performance” are important reflective metrics of a nations development. And I sure as hell hope they’d have better healthcare when it’s free and lower gun violence when they’re literally banned. Still poorer than mississippi too lmfao
Billionaires mean investments. Investments mean companies. Companies means production. Production means jobs. Jobs means income.
Yeah, trickle down doesn't exactly work as advertised (it never existed, made up as an excuse decades later). But it's the truth that more money in the country means more wealth for everyone, regardless of the source.
The last generation of leftists made up the term trickle-down economics as a criticism of supply-side economics, and then convinced the current generation of leftists that trickle-down economics was the original name and stupid rightoids believed that if we just gave all our money to the rich it would trickle down back to us.
I agree that more money in the country means more wealth, but I won't advocate for that money being concentrated in just a few people. Billionaires mean more investments, yes. but the general public having more disposable income will also mean more investments, so I don't get why they need billionaires to do it
99% of the time the average person is investmenting into already existing properties (especially in the US, because of 401k being the most common retirement program).
Damn imagine if Mississippi lowered corporations and inheritance tax even more. You could get at least three more pedophile billionaires to make the GDP per capita even better!
Might make it a little more difficult for the government to support roads or libraries or law enforcement but that's a small price for the rest of the population to pay.
Can't even complain about the per capita measurement being diluted via immigration since Mississippi's pop ratio grew twice as fast. Population of Mississippi increased by 100k in the last 25 years(4% growth). Germany's population went up by 1 million in the same time frame (2% growth).
Well a lot of those immigrants would be on benefits in Germany probably, they have nice welfare state, if its the same as in the Netherlands where 55% were on welfare in 2022. And around places with asylumcenters you cant but notice, they either made the perilous journey with young kids or pump out a couple as soon as they came over here.
We are slightly less sodomized by our corporate overlords though. Median wealth of a Kraut, Frog or a... help me here, is there a slur for Italians? - is higher than median wealth of an American, despite the GDP difference.
OP made a post almost exactly like this one a few hours earlier.
Could it be this two month old account with 30k karma and hidden posts is actually a glowie? I don't know. You tell me frens...
GDP ≠ Quality of life. You can have a high GDP because corporations earn a lot of money by shamelessly polluting the environment, making everyone sick in the process. Welcome to Capitalism 😘
Id like to agree but when i look at myself, my coworkers and friends im honestly not so sure about that anymore, everything is so expensive now especially rent and the Taxes are painful.
You underestimate car costs in USA I think, a lot of EU don't own cars, same goes for healthcare, infrastructure. A lot of money is saved, even considering high taxes
Even in terms of wealth distribution it's pretty dire. Iirc by the time you get to the 30th percentile every percentile in the US is richer than the equivalent in the UK in raw disposable income.
Of course, the overheads are quite different between the two as well and I'd never choose to live in the US but the split is pretty unambiguous.

ZincHead@reddit
Misleading in what way?

I've seen the yardless houses that Brits live in, sharing walls with neighbors. I've also seen beans on toast considered a delicacy. Something isn't adding up.
HuntedSFM@reddit
No you haven't
DRW_@reddit
I don't think you know what delicacy means
cecilforester@reddit
I know that neither beans nor toast is a delicacy.

Brits should spend less time ragging on the only people above them on the shitlist and more time saving themselves from everyone else.

My favourite quality of life measurements:median household disposable income, productivity growth, and industrial electricity prices.
boringexplanation@reddit
You’re right- everything worth having is free in eurotopia and doesn’t require money. Silly Americans
NyMiggas@reddit
Guys seriously you can not be getting this cucked by corporations that you are using higher productivity growth as a quality of life own.
sternold@reddit
Sure, and you probably want to live in a high GDP/capita country vs a low one. But neither that nor median household disposable income are strong measures of quality of life.
Y35C0@reddit
Silver_Wind_1@reddit
All fair points
sternold@reddit
Not really.
sternold@reddit
No one said it didn't, just that it's not a strong measure of quality of life.
Why do you think I didn't include those in my comment?
I also didn't include gas prices, but I'm not sure they strongly correlate with quality of life either. In a country where most things are far closer, and public transit is actually worth it, gas prices become less relevant, I bet.
Didn't include that either.
I know you're being sarcastic, but this is kinda correct? I bet it's probably better for people's mental health to have 28 guaranteed days off, but spent on smaller vacations, than to fight for 10 days and force your amazing vacation to Disney Land into those days.
What do you mean by "universal on paper"? Do you think it's secretly not?
If you couldn't live in the USA, would you move to China with their glorious second place in GDP? What about India, number 6?
Spookybear_@reddit
Imagine measuring everything by money. Just like when you're born, the first moment of your life needs to be recorded economically

DRW_@reddit
You're extraordinarily stupid.
It isn't saying the UK is #1 in the WORLD in this metrics, so the comparisons to those other non-US states you listed make no sense whatsoever. It's saying if the UK was a US state, how would it compare to other US states.
You can't read and you're calling other people morons lmao.

hoi4enjoyer@reddit
Embarrassed? Yeah i’m real embarrassed I misread some retards cherry picked america bad piece on the fucking 4chan subreddit. They’re barely in the top ten for HDI on your list anyways, which is the only measure that matters in the first place. Like paid maternity leave and “pupil performance” are important reflective metrics of a nations development. And I sure as hell hope they’d have better healthcare when it’s free and lower gun violence when they’re literally banned. Still poorer than mississippi too lmfao
badpunsinagoofyfont@reddit
Where would the UK rank in terms of nonwhite population if it was a US state?

-Django@reddit
You think more people hoarding wealth will solve this?
DrBadGuy1073@reddit
Billionaires mean investments. Investments mean companies. Companies means production. Production means jobs. Jobs means income.
Yeah, trickle down doesn't exactly work as advertised (it never existed, made up as an excuse decades later). But it's the truth that more money in the country means more wealth for everyone, regardless of the source.
Valuable-Chipmunk784@reddit
The last generation of leftists made up the term trickle-down economics as a criticism of supply-side economics, and then convinced the current generation of leftists that trickle-down economics was the original name and stupid rightoids believed that if we just gave all our money to the rich it would trickle down back to us.
-Django@reddit
I agree that more money in the country means more wealth, but I won't advocate for that money being concentrated in just a few people. Billionaires mean more investments, yes. but the general public having more disposable income will also mean more investments, so I don't get why they need billionaires to do it
DrBadGuy1073@reddit
99% of the time the average person is investmenting into already existing properties (especially in the US, because of 401k being the most common retirement program).

pookiegonzalez@reddit
I cannot think of a single reason to care about GDP as a normal person.
Axe-actly@reddit
But think about the companies! It's very important that companies make a huge profit and pay very low taxes and wages so your GDP gets huge!
Judah_Earl@reddit
They also need to import millions of cheap labour and hire Indian CEO's otherwise the GDP might go down by half a point.

Damn imagine if Mississippi lowered corporations and inheritance tax even more. You could get at least three more pedophile billionaires to make the GDP per capita even better! Might make it a little more difficult for the government to support roads or libraries or law enforcement but that's a small price for the rest of the population to pay.
Family_guy_is_funny@reddit
I’d rather have less gdp and not have to be circumcised thanks
Happy_Ocelot_4945@reddit
Can't even complain about the per capita measurement being diluted via immigration since Mississippi's pop ratio grew twice as fast. Population of Mississippi increased by 100k in the last 25 years(4% growth). Germany's population went up by 1 million in the same time frame (2% growth).

Well a lot of those immigrants would be on benefits in Germany probably, they have nice welfare state, if its the same as in the Netherlands where 55% were on welfare in 2022. 0110-0-10-00-000@reddit
