Rivian Software Chief Says Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Are Redundant in the World of AI

System exclusive software is redundant. No one wants that shit. Everyone just wants CarPlay or Android Auto.
GeneralCommand4459@reddit
It’s a tricky one. On the one hand CarPlay and Android Auto are universal, which means they look the same in every car you jump into. However they never really integrate fully and sometimes you have to switch between the two interfaces. And things like seeing the map in the dashboard may not work. And it’s worse for EVs that need to use their maps to calculate charging stops.
I’d be fine without CarPlay or Android Auto if the native infotainment system had the actual few apps that are available in CP or AA built in. Typically this is podcasts, audiobooks, music, maps (although native maps, updated regularly, would be fine).
There will always be a niche case of some app someone needs that won’t be available. Not sure how to resolve that. Maybe the native infotainment system could be developed to accommodate apps in a sandbox that doesn’t need to take over the whole space.

My problem with native apps and UI is that the interface gets slow and buggy real quick.
In my Model Y, my poor Intel Atom is struggling to keep up with the interface. Things are slow and I don’t get new features that require the Ryzen chips.
At lease with CP and AA, the SoC in your phone will already be light years ahead of these car APUs and stay current as you upgrade your phone.

Ah yes, because automakers are known for their great software.
WCWRingMatSound@reddit
Consistent software updates too.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
And bottom-of-the-barrel hardware to run that great software on!

Came here to say this. This is all about data collection and eventual subscription services/revenue. GM did the same thing and they're paying for it. These auto company execs really don't realize just how big a deal Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are to buyers.
Sindica69@reddit
Well there goes any chance of me buying a Rivian lmao
lunaticfridgeprime@reddit
Nothing quite like shooting your own company in the foot as they are still trying to reach mass adoption.
ScentedCandles14@reddit
For many prospective car buyers these days, if a car does not offer these utilities, that product is immediately excluded from their potential choice pool. Simple as that, it’s considered a bare minimum feature by almost everyone. Executives who espouse anything to the contrary are out of touch or deluding themselves.

The number of CarPlay/AA dashtop solutions will rise for many of these vehicles. More chinesium garbage to work around poor choices by manufacturers.
Skensis@reddit
Is it a substantial number?
Like, several manufacturers dropped Android auto and carplay, and are still selling decent.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Indeed. If I can't use CarPlay, I'm out already.
drjenkstah@reddit
If a car I’m interested in has AI then I’m out especially in its current implementation. I would rather have a dumb app than a dumb AI.
Skensis@reddit
Meh, I honestly would much rather my car have a good LLM than the shit that is Siri or Googles voice assistant.
alex-andrite@reddit
What the hell does AI have to do with streaming music / maps from my phone? I don’t understand
k-one-0-two@reddit
-Hey car, stream my playlist and make route to work!
starts spotify and gmaps
HuyFongFood@reddit
Except that doesn't work.
Honestly? I don't want to talk to my technology, especially in a historically noisy environment.
Having it as an option for people who need or want to use it? Sure.
Forcing it as the sole or primary input solution? Nope.
k-one-0-two@reddit
Yeah. My car technically has a voice control, never used it
Seamus-Archer@reddit
I like CarPlay and android auto because they’re a universal UI regardless of the vehicle. If their proprietary infotainment system is so much better I’ll use that instead, but CarPlay and android auto should always be an option.
They’re just looking for a reason to justify data harvesting and selling subscriptions.
HuyFongFood@reddit
More like they want to stop Apple/Google from getting that data because they are missing out on it when we use CP or AA instead of their in-built shite.
_bfmc@reddit
What the fuck does that mean
REU512@reddit
You either die a hero or you live long enough to become the villain.
I'm so tired of Rivian. Maybe they should focus on changing their designs so that it doesn't cost $40,000 to repair minor collision damage. This company is a joke.

What
Ecsta@reddit
I wonder if anyone actually buys this
TrueSwagformyBois@reddit
The executives clearly do
gautamb0@reddit
I rented an r1s for a couple of days. I ended up listening to podcasts literally off of my iPhone’s speaker because I couldn’t get Bluetooth to work.
ReadingRainbowie@reddit
Literally the only thing people like about new car user interfaces is Apple Carplay or Android Auto lmao
OllieFromCairo@reddit
Thanks, I hate it.

Rethinking my interest in the R2/R3
I don't want an LLM guessing at what I'm trying to do when I just want to turn the AC down

Another reason to tell my husband we will be never selling his 18 Silverado.
mrb4@reddit
very funny how these guys always want to come out and tell the consumer they are wrong for wanting this functionality for whatever vague reason they feel like making up at the time when the reality is that they only reason they don't do it is because they want to sell the data themselves.
wiscotangofoxtreat@reddit
Ai sucks

Tech companies fight over consumer data. More at 11.
