Recommendations?

My car just got totaled, but I’m hoping to turn a bad thing into a good thing. Any recommendations for cars, vans, or trucks that are great for overlanding, super reliable, and not too costly? I know that a lot of specifics go into what I will eventually pick, but I’m just hoping for some ideas or places to start looking.

"super reliable" is more a function of a specific vehicle than a model in some sense. With some big caveats, the most reliable vehicles in the short to medium term will be the newest ones with the fewest miles - which also tends to be what costs the most.
If you are looking for light to medium duty off roading with space to live inside; Look at SUVs and trucks - rav4s, someone mentioned Xterras and they're typically solid, along with Frontiers, Tacos, 4Runners, etc.
Also look at hatchbacks and midsized options with good ground clearance and awd. These are at home on service roads and in remote places and you can gain a lot of comfort (and reduce the price or mileage or age) for what you sacrifice in pure 4WD capability. Some in this category would be Sienna awd, Porsche Cayenne, RAV4, Civic hatchback AWD, and basically every non-sporty Subaru model since the year 2000
My favorite sleeper is a "normal" commuter car in a AWD hatchback variant. You can live in it but it doesn't scream that out when you park at Walmart.

If you’re looking for off-road capability and reliability, it’s hard to go wrong with Toyota, whether that’s a 4Runner or Tacoma.
Never owned one but I hear lots of good things about the old Nissan Xterra’s. I’ve had some bad experiences with Nissan but that’s likely the cheapest option

You can overland a civic. Off-road capability increases as price of car decreases

Too costly is pretty vague. What’s your budget

What country are you from? That will influence things

Gmt800 trucks are great, reliable, easy to maintain, but a little thirsty
