No cd player wtf

So the last time I bought a vehicle was in 2010 and it died the other day so I went to the dealership to grab another one and I forgot to check a crucial point, a cd player. Apparently I missed the memo when they decided to get rid of them completely. So all my car cd’s are rendered useless. Like you’re flippin telling me that I have to use spotify? Eff that shite.
BabyFartMacGeezacks@reddit
Rip your CDs to your computer, put them on your phone, connect with Bluetooth and use the music player on your phone (I have Samsung music). No Spotify needed, no flipping through CDs needed.
I love CDs, but my stack now stays at home for use in my 6 disc changer attached to my stereo.
jibegirl@reddit (OP)
Sigh, alright, thanks, but will it even sound as good? Gonna miss the tactile vibe of manually putting the cd in chefs kiss
StandardNeither1311@reddit
Yes. CDs are digital, and so is your computer. there’s no need for your ripped files to sound any different than a CD.
Red_Car_Singer@reddit
The major difference between the types of audio files is how they compress or streamline from the original wav file. ACC is great quality because of what it removes and how. 80-90% of the sound quality of wav without the larger file size. Ripping at wav is time consuming and you'll need massive storage. As for the tactile... Agreed. Hot swapping CDs while trying not to lose a finger is a talent. Never lose it!
ipsumdeiamoamasamat@reddit
Audiophiles say CDs sound like shit.
You're in your car, where you'll be subject to so much ambient noise that sound quality really isn't even a consideration. The audio quality of a radio signal is much worse than a CD, and we don't even question it.
scizzix@reddit
Rule 1, never listen to Audiophiles. It's a fetish. Studies have shown they can't actually tell the difference between the audio quality from different sources and signal types.
Anyone who claims they can tell the difference and just starts talking about warmth and richness I'm going to ignore, or maybe starting shouting about "rich Corinthian leather" to drown them out.
Adventurer_By_Trade@reddit
That's the most frustrating thing. CDs were about as good as we were going to get for a cheap convenient high quality playback medium. Reel to reel tape is better quality and less convenient, and high resolution lossless files are wonderful but come with their own playback complications. Vinyl is quirky and esthetically pleasing in some regards, but the amount of actual sonic data recorded is pretty poor when compared to every other format apart from the Edison wax cylinder. This is why I stopped listening to "audiophiles." It gets pretty woo woo real fast.
omgitsjagen@reddit
Just a simple example. I'm sure there are many better ones, but this is the one I know. "Steppin Razor" by Sublime will absolutely blow your stock speakers out, from the CD. It barely pumps my speakers on my YouTube Music/Spotify.
Haemwich@reddit
And stock car speakers, even upgraded factory systems, won't do lossless audio justice.
HangryHangryHedgie@reddit
I have a sneaky CD player in my glove box. 2016 VW. I keep at least one CD at all times, preferably a mixed CD someone made me.
mlee12382@reddit
Rip them as FLAC or WAV files, WAV is raw uncompressed so it's the same as what's on the CD to start with, FLAC is "lossless" compression. If you need to do mp3 for some reason go with 320kbps minimum.
B4SSF4C3@reddit
Unless you have a nice audio system in the car, it hardly matters anyway.
illinoishokie@reddit
Rip to AAC instead of MP3. Anyone who says that can tell a difference between CD quality and AAC quality is lying or autistic.
Spiritual_Smile9882@reddit
I did this years ago with an iPod. Every new cd I got would get ripped to a hard drive and then I would periodically sync the ipod and then put it back in the console in the car.
BabyFartMacGeezacks@reddit
Yeah, just rip at high quality bitrate. Reading off a cd for any cd player is just digital sound anyway, it just reads at a high bitrate.
Nothing beats the feeling of swapping CDs though. I still miss having one in the car and haven't had one for 4 years now.
Clear_Tangerine5110@reddit
If you do it right there’s no reason it shouldn’t sound just as good.
Devious_Bastard@reddit
Good idea. I’m just going to pop the CD into my laptop… oh goddamnit!
illinoishokie@reddit
That's actually super easy (barely an inconvenience). You can get external CD-RW drives for like 20-30 bucks now.
mlee12382@reddit
Might as well go with a Blu-ray drive so you can rip your DVDs and Blu-ray discs too and set up a Jellyfin server.
firesticks@reddit
Can you explain the Jellyfin server like I’m 46 but used to rip media back in my youth?
mlee12382@reddit
Jellyfin is similar to subscription streaming platforms like Netflix, but it's self hosted on your computer and uses your own media that you've ripped from your physical media or obtained through other less reputable practices. It let's you stream your own content to your devices without having to swap out physical media. https://jellyfin.org/ if you click "See it in Action" you can view the official demo server with public domain content, and you can read up on it there also.
djkidna@reddit
Plex is also an option, and it’s easier to setup, but their policy and service changes are growing more and more anti-consumer as they try to become more “legit” as a business. Glad I got the lifetime Plex pass when I did before they raised it to astronomical levels, because I’ve managed to get my family and closest friends to actually use my server and it’s a joy for everyone all around
mlee12382@reddit
Yeah that most recent lifetime price jump is just wild. People complained when it went to $250 last year or whenever it was but $750 after July is just wild. It is a bit more polished for UI though and remote streaming is a lot easier since you don't have to research and choose your own solution (to be fair there's some pretty easy ones it just takes a little more time to get going.)
Another downside for Plex is you have to have internet for it to work, even locally. With Jellyfin you can still watch stuff on your local network even if the internet is out.
djkidna@reddit
The internet requirement even when watching locally is definitely an annoyance, but there is a workaround if you’re confident in messing around with network settings. Personally I just go up to my server PC and have it cast to my TV if I’m feeling desperate lol. But I usually have enough other things to do during the rare occurrence of an internet outage that it doesn’t bug me
beau92082@reddit

That stench is probably due to the Taco Bell.
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
Many still have an optional CD player you can add but they are over priced. Best thing to do if you don't want to embrace the stream is put all your music onto a USB drive which most cars can read these days.
greenbeer317@reddit
Check the glove box. Some manufacturers hide it there. If not then it’s time to embrace current times and use CarPlay.
amusedmisanthrope@reddit
Last year my favorite band released its latest album. They chose not to release it on CD. Digital or Vinyl were the only options. I haven't bothered to listen to it yet.

Mine still does from 2019. It also has usb so I use that to stream music and get directions on Apple car play. I love CDs. But my CDs got absolutely ruined in the car. Now they sit on my shelf next to my stereo in the basement
kmill0202@reddit
Cd players in new cars started dying off around the mid 2010s. I'm not sure when the last holdouts stopped putting them in vehicles, but it's my understanding that they are just not offered in new vehicles at all anymore.
You do have some solutions, depending on your vehicles equipment and a few other factors. Mp3s played off your phone or a thumb drive. Curated playlists of all your favorite albums through whatever music subscription service you use. And I think there are different things you can buy, like portable cd players with Bluetooth.
I'll be making this transition soon enough myself. After driving a 2004 vehicle for 20 years, it is time for a new one. The ones I've taken for a test drive so far are worlds apart from what I'm used to with all the screens and zero physical media players. It's going to be an adjustment.
My plan for replacing my cd listening is to build a playlist using YouTube music. That's just my preferred service because I find it super easy to build playlists with and they have a lot of stuff that can't be found on Spotify or other services.

My 2017 BRZ doesn't have a CD player nor did any model of them at the time have them. I thought they were completely gone. My wifes 2023 forrester has a CD player.....

Yeah, I forgot to check too when I bought a new used car in January. Not that I used CDs much in my old 2000 Accord. It was hit or miss if the CD player would actually work anymore.
Mysterious_Fennel459@reddit
My last car, i bought in 2005 and it only came with a tape deck. Which was a pain because my grandparents drove me two hours to another town to buy a car and I brought some CD's with me to play in the new car on the way back.
The first thing I did was get a CD player when I got back home. I used the heck out of it for a good ten years but now I just use the Aux and play pandora all the time.

This is rage bait. Either that or you're driving around in your covered wagon. Remember limewire, kazaa, napster, etc? By now, you must have some 'collection' available in mp3 (or better). Just use bluetooth and you're golden. Throw those CDs out the window as you're cruisin' down the highway...

Some of us don't have unlimited data on our phones to be constantly connecting to the cloud to listen to music w/o wifi nor do we have phones with enough memory to hold all our downloaded or ripped tunes to use w/o needing internet.
TheDavidCall@reddit
I’m genuinely surprised that you’re surprised cars don’t have CD players anymore. That hasn’t been the dominant medium for music consumption in nearly two decades, long enough for children born after CDs fell to the wayside to be buying and driving their own cars. I haven’t used CDs since maybe 2009, and even then it was to DJ with. I was using USB drives in the car as early as 2005 or so.
thesmellnextdoor@reddit
It's hard to even find a computer with a disc drive now! I work with courts and sometimes we get audio recordings on a goddamn cd, even though they could just email it to us. No one has a disc drive anymore, so the last time this happened, we had to have someone go to the library to upload the MP3 file to the cloud so the rest of us could hear it.
dinosandbees@reddit
More reasons I'm never getting rid of my "older" Acura (2013). A CD drive that downloads the music into the car's hard drive. And buttons. Everything is controlled by physical BUTTONS and dials. Volume? Twist a knob! Want a/c colder? Turn the dial!
This is the most boomer hill I'm willing to die on. Death to touchscreens in cars.
tourniquet2099@reddit
Why wouldn’t you just use your phone?! When i got my last car in 2012, that was one of the main things I was hyped about.
Kwards725@reddit
You baiting right? Because I refuse to believe you bought a whole new car and with as long as it takes to finalize the deal, you never thought to check to see how you gonna play your music.

Elegant-Ninja6384@reddit
Manufactures just want a big screen and nothing else.
Then they want to monitor all your data points and collect for money.
Even better if you are missing music they would be glad to show you some subscription options.

It was a $400 option on my WRX.
I didn't get it because I'm not a boomer yelling at a cloud. 😉
AlienDelarge@reddit
Of course not, but this sub does have a pattern of xennials yelling at clouds.
minnesnowta@reddit
Yeah I’m wondering if I belong here sometimes, hah. The second that aftermarket CarPlay radios were available, I put one in my car (2018ish) and I had been using Bluetooth to stream from my phone for at least a decade before that. I don’t even know if I own a physical CD anymore. I embrace new technology and love trying new gadgets and whatnot.
AlienDelarge@reddit
I'm kinda the opposite and dislike anything new unless it really solves a problem for me. I also vastly prefer physical media and still have lots of CDs amd other formats. That said, CD players in cars were always kind of junk because the CDs would get scratched on bumpy roads. I gave them a try but quickly went to ripping them to a MP3 player and kept using the tape adapter until we bought a car with android auto in '24.
OllieFromCairo@reddit
CDs are objectively an inferior technology, though. The storage is small, they skip, they’re easily damaged, and the playback equipment takes up space that could be put to far more productive use in the car.
Digital music is equal or higher quality, effectively infinitely storable and easy to back up.
It actually does solve several problems.
AlienDelarge@reddit
For car usage, I agree with you and have for 20 years or more. I only ever had the one car with a CD player but it also has a tape deck and I used that far more than the CD player. Primarily for playing MP3 files.
For home use, I don't entirely agree. I prefer having the physical media and CDs have some advantages over tapes vinyl, etc.
jibegirl@reddit (OP)
I’m not like other girls tho, I’m specifically yelling at the apple cloud

I'm sure a billion people are saying this, but rip your CDs and keep the flac/mp3 files on your phone. I, too, miss the days of the Compact Disc, but they are gone. Getting old sucks in ways that I had never anticipated.
CTMechE@reddit
I'm a 1980 engineer geek who still likes CDs and thinks vinyl people are silly ...
I've kept all my CDs and still buy new ones on occasion. I've maintained and curated an MP3 (and FLAC) library since 1997 and run a Plex server for easy streaming, which is my main listening method via my phone. I will still occasionally spin CDs at home though. I even have a Panasonic discman with digital radio from 2004 that I use rechargeable AA batteries in on occasion, although my old DVD changer is still in use on the main stereo.
That said, I have 2 easier recommendations for your car that don't involve running a server: 1) If you have an MP3 library, most new cars will play music from a USB flash drive
2) Amazon sells a wide variety of cheap generic portable CD players with Bluetooth that you could pair with your car stereo or Aux in. Many have a rechargeable battery and USB-C plug.
One final note: It's become a hassle, but you can still upload 100k MP3 songs from your own computer to your free YouTube Music account and then stream them back from the cloud. The hassle is that the YouTube Music app constantly tries to get you to subscribe and you have to constantly select My Uploads to access your own stuff. But it's a free workaround and backup option to consider.
jibegirl@reddit (OP)
You get it, thank you 🙌
CTMechE@reddit
Yup.
And a lot of people here are going with the mocking approach, but IMO this isn't just a "new format, you're old" situation, it's people becoming accustomed to renting instead of owning music and then somehow laughing at others. What's worse, wanting to listen to what you've already got, or indefinitely paying a subscription to access it?
contrarianaquarian@reddit
Not to mention some "correct" album versions aren't even available on streaming, so the only way to hear it is the original release CD.

CTMechE@reddit
I still question the future of it. Not that it won't be there, but what will it cost, and what will happen with fragmentation like it did with Netflix. Say, 8 years from now the pricing becomes significant and studios or artists split from Spotify or Apple, what do people who haven't bought music in a decade do? Use the free ad-supported version... just like listening to the FM radio 🤣
Also, remember when Taylor Swift pulled her entire catalog from Spotify for 2.5 years?
With ownership comes control.
ipsumdeiamoamasamat@reddit
These are some of the same reasons I keep cable vs. going exclusively streaming. The process to change from one game broadcast to another game broadcast, especially when hopping between streaming apps, is horrible.

I do a lot of road trips and find myself with little to no signal to stream with. I found an external CD player designed for cars without a player, that connects via USB and I mounted inside my center console. Works as good as any car stereo I've ever had. Now, if I could find a solution to the iPod problem... (before you say it, yes it physically connects, but the OS is incompatible with Carplay, so it doesn't do anything)

Most phones have 128+ GB of storage these days... way more than a stack of CDs hold. Just rip the CDs audio and put it on your phone. No need for a subscription if you already have all the music you want. Save them in a way that your vehicle is compatible with.
SucoDeUnobtainium@reddit
Since of the audio CDs that you were carrying around can fit on one USB stick, you set aside an hour or so on the weekend and rip your CDs to MP3.
Are you without a computer with a CD drive?
Then realize everything in your audio CD collection is on YouTube, and there's many many sites available to download music from YouTube.
If you were concerned about the higher audio quality, then it's not that much work to find easy places to download music that's already an MP3 form.
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
I can't find a laptop with a CD drive anymore. Do you have suggestions?
SucoDeUnobtainium@reddit
nowadays, there are probably apps for both android and iOS that can do this, so technically a laptop's not even unnecessary minimum requirement.
Every published song you like is already on YouTube. Use a YouTube ripper site and pull down a backup copy that way.
But only for the CDs that you already own because we're not advocating for piracy, right? 😬

I bought a 2015 Impreza new. Had to pay extra (or custom ordered, I forgot) to have it with a CD player. I do not expect any cars today to have them. I still drive my wifes college car (over 20 years old) to and from work. Still has a time capsule CD binder in 😄

My last vehicle, which I sold 8 years ago, was the last thing I owned that played any physical media.
No VCR, no cassette tape, no DVD, no CD players anywhere in my house.

Cael_NaMaor@reddit
Okay.... My 2015 has a usb drive. So I put my music (1k+ at this point) that I want to listen to on a Jump Drive & play that. If it plays something I'm not interested in, skip. But I'm pretty eclectic & okay with it just playing straight through.
brilliantpants@reddit
You might have to go back a few years to find one. I was actually pleasantly surprised that my 2019 came with a CD player.
cybah@reddit
Yeah I was miffed my new car doesn't have a CD player. It does have an aux port tho, check your car.. some do. But some require you to pull out the infotainment system to get to it.
I just use Airplay and a BT adapter. tbh better than CDs cuz I don't need to flip thru a book while driving to change the music.

There are plenty of other options besides Spotify, that are much better. I use YouTube Music, and it's far and away superior.
I am an avid CD collector, and the car I bought last year was the first one we've ever owned that did not have a CD player. While I enjoyed having my media in the car to swap out and listen to, I quickly adapted to Android Auto, and don't miss having CDs in the car.

Fun fact: the truck I still drive had a tape deck (that I replaced with a head unit many years ago). It's a 2005.

I wonder if it’s a Toyota thing. We have gotten two separate Lexus (Lexuses? Lexi? Lol) that come with a cd player. I actually found my old cd book from my teens/college years just so I could play them. The cars are only 2 and 3 years old.
Auntie_Venom@reddit
Crutchfield still exists, you can get CD players with removable faces still. I bought a double-DIN one for my truck on Amazon a few years ago.
It is harder now since everything is integrated into a touch screen now but there are other options besides Spotify. I use Sirius/XM in two of my vehicles, my 2010 has a CD player that I use once in awhile but not often, because if I want to listen to something specific I just use Bluetooth from my phone. Apple Music has my old iTunes song libraries from my iPod days, I also have Amazon Music with my Prime acct., there’s a lot of free albums on there, and a premium subscription available that’s a lot cheaper than Sirius/XM.
If you have an Aux port, you can plug in an old iPod or a DiscMan if you must have physical media. My car without the CD player still has an Aux port.
My husband insists on physical media too, except…He buys CDs on Amazon then rips them to put on his external hard drive to listen at work, with headphones in his PC. Like dude they’re ripped anyway just use your phone! That said, his car is so old the Aux cable doesn’t stream media which is weird, when he gets a new one soon, we’ll have a third Sirius/XM subscription because when he’s in one of my cars he immediately turns on the Maximum Metallica channel. He’s yet to embrace- “Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole”

Yeah cars come with touch screens now. I use my phone I had kick ass speakers installed replacing the factory set up with some quality speakers. You can keep your cd’s I’m in Arizona they melt in your ride here even hidden. I get needing tunes but cd’s come on we’re in 2026 get with times. Lolz. Then the scratches on CD’s skipping and shit I don’t miss it. There’s some really cool after market decks look into one. I bet there’s a CD player one still floating around shop around.
YourStinkyPete@reddit
I miss having the stomp button on the floor to change the headlights from high beam to low beam. But I did take the CD player head unit out of my 2010 car and replaced it with Bluetooth touchscreen unit that I got from Crutchfield. I’m sure they have a CD player that you could install in your new car.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
Same here.
We had to replace our vehicle. Got a second hand car in great condition.... no CD player. What will we listen to on road trips?
Spiritual_Smile9882@reddit
Last car I bought that had a CD player was a 2012 model. When I got a 2018 model car there was no CD player and I can't think of any car I looked at during that time that had one in it. They phased out pretty quick. You can get an aftermarket unit probably, but with how most screen units are so integrated into the car these days, that's not the simple swap out of a head unit that it used to be.
MisRandomness@reddit
I’ve heard they make car usb cd players now because Gen Z wants to use CDs.
Love_003@reddit
I bought a handful of used cds at the thrift store a couple weeks ago. It’s been over a decade since I’ve shopped for used cds. When I got back to my car I put a cd in and it felt amazing!! The excitement of finding the albums based on the cover, not knowing all the songs, being able to handle them and insert them into a physical player, and hearing the first track was just as much fun as it used to be. And they were still cheap, $2/cd. Searching for albums digitally is no comparison.
Da_Fish@reddit
I never actually had a vehicle with one. I've only actually had 3 vehicles in my life time. A little green 94 Dodge Dakota. Then a 2004 Ram basic work truck with no extras, surprised it even had AC. Now by first new car a 2020 Soul. I was rocking that aux cord tape deck life.

YouTube music will let you upload your own tracks (up to 100,000 files). Rip the CDs and upload the mp3s. It's amazing having your whole CD binder in your phone and never having to worry about licensing bullshit making the music you want to listen to unavailable.

I ran into this issue in 2016 when I bought a new vehicle. I started just ripping my CD's to mp3 and putting them on a USB drive, then I keep the USB drive plugged into my car. Rip all of your cds to mp3 or FLAC format and save them to a thumb drive. You'll be probably be able to get your entire CD collection on a 32GB flash drive. Plug that into the USB port on your car. You now have an 8000 song "CD" changer. You'll never go back.

Most, if not all cars now will allow you to stream from your phone. I'll do this on occasion. There's also the option to create a playlist on a usb drive. My car (Subaru) likes to randomly scramble my playlist so I don't bother. By 2015 cd players were starting to get phased out of cars. By 2020 almost all mainstream cars stopped offering them as standard. But treating a discontinued convenience feature like civilization collapse isn’t it.
