The best thing my company ever did was switch to relay codes. Not every customer uses them, but one of our biggest ones does. I get a code with my load info and whenever there's a lumper fee I put it in. No requesting an advance on the card or anything, no waiting for dispatch to send the authorization. It's just in my load info as soon as I get dispatched.
Of course, the best solution would actually be to make it illegal to hold drivers hostage for something that should be handled by a billing department.

Wish I still had the receipt, but KEHE in Portland OR got me over $600 for a half pallet & a quarter pallet. On the plus side they’re friendly & don’t waste time.

Then the inside of trailer looks like it been in a hurricane when they're done

Crapstone charges by the case from what I was told. I paid 2 lumper fees in Minnesota and Wisconsin $960 and $835. Both loads were full trailer frozen vegetables.

I avoid loads that have lumpers “at all cost”

You mean extortion bills?

Lumper charges are hilarious:
Lumper bills carrier $610
Carrier bills shipper $610 for lumper fees
Shipper builds lumper fees into the cost of the product.
