Clack-clack!

Between Hollywood and observed conversations, there's always been this image in my mind that a home invader will hear the sound of a shotgun racking and either flee or move directly into "find out".
But it occurred to me tonight that no home invader will get that warning in my home because I keep my shotguns loaded and chambered.
So then I got curious. How many of you keep your home defense shotguns (or other guns) loaded and chambered?
Why or why not? Are you concerned about safety or reaction time more?
I'm just curious.

I lean my shotgun in the corner next to my bed with an empty chamber/loaded mag. If I have time to get to my shotgun, the time it would take to rack a shell is not going to make a difference in the outcome. I keep a revolver on the nightstand to bridge the gap.
If you scare someone off by racking a shotgun they might just come back when you're not home to steal your guns. Leaving an unsecured, chambered long gun is not safe. Unlocking a safe to get to your gun takes too long. It's all a compromise you have to make based on your own circumstances.

Hollywood guns make noise just from pointing them.

Slings, maybe, if we're giving them credit? But I'd go with they're just not knowledgeable, again being nice...

They put that dumbass clicky noise when a character points a suppressed pistol.
There is no sling in sight.

Round chambered on my nightstand for reaction time, you never know what the scenario will be and I want to give myself every advantage possible. What if I don’t wake up until they are in my room?

That was my thought but I have children in the home so no gun is left out ever. I do however have a loaded safe in every room of the house except the kitchen and bathrooms.
Kids safes are locked in their rooms for their guns but I keep their keys in my safe.

Not in kitchen or bathroom? No shower hi power? No Shit & Wesson? No knife block Glock? No plate Python?

A pistol would be a lot easier to put in a fast access safe.

That's what I have placed around my home. Glocks everywhere.
But my go to coming out of bed would be the 12g.
If I wanted i could go in the safe sitting opposite this one to grab a pistol or rifle, but whenever I've had a home defense scare, we always go for the shotguns.
Bonus picture of the front door safe where my gf and I both keep our daily carry pistols:

Shotguns are kept cruiser ready, hammer down, action unlocked, empty chamber, full magazine and safety off. We have Remington 870s and Mossberg 500s. Kept in this manner, it doesn’t matter which shotgun is grabbed, the manual of arms is the same, work the action and it is ready. Also, these are not drop safe so don’t want the dog to knock the one that is in the corner over.
Also have a 1301, it is also kept with an empty chamber but a shell on the lifter so just need to pull the bolt back. It had to go back for warranty repair though and I haven’t put enough shells through it since getting it back to make it the bedroom gun yet.

Not having a round chambered is like putting your seatbelt on as you’re having an accident. Both carry guns are chambered at all times
