It saves water as well as time
Snoo59867@reddit
And saves many partners from arguing about doing the dishes 😃
CrossCityLine@reddit
You just argue about who has to load/unload the dishywasher now!
Illustrious_Read8038@reddit
The trick is to turn it on before it's full. Washes better, and psychologically is less hassle to empty it.

And how to correctly load it
BuddyLegsBailey@reddit
To save any bickering after boxing day lunch for 10 of us at the in-laws, we just stuck all the dirty plates and cutlery in a washing basket and brought it home with us to stick in our dishwasher as they don't have one. So much simpler, and got us a ton of Brownie points
bunnyswan@reddit
Not the way my dad uses it
mister_magic@reddit
Only saves water if you use it properly. I know people that rinse off so much before the dishwasher they might as well put the plates straight into their cabinets

Hiring a cleaner. Game changer if you have a busy lifestyle.
Ok_Dirt_1306@reddit
I'm going to sound terrible here but what do they clean? This is just so far away from my world that I'd like to know more. Is it the difference between the house being acceptable and spotless? Because we muddle along between us and try to keep things clean.
Under_Pressure_123@reddit
I mean she's not amazing but she tidies up the rooms, takes the bins out, mops/hoovers and generally clean the kitchen/bathroom. For me it's the difference between unacceptable and acceptable ahah.
Brent_Goose@reddit
When we had a professional cleaner (professional in the sense it was her actual job, not because she was amazing) we usually had all surfaces wiped, bathroom cleaned, sinks cleaned, vacuuming and dusting done. Two hours once a fortnight.
We fired them beause they kept turning up at odd times before eventually no-showing and now we have a neighbour come round weekly for an hour (she needed the cash, we needed a cleaner). She wipes the surfaces, gives them bathroom a once-over and dusts between and behind all the ornaments, no vacuuming. Sometimes we ask her to instead concentrate on one thing, like cleaning the inside of the windows or the kitchen appliances.
We still clean as we go during the week, but it's nice knowing that on a Monday all the dust build-up and things that are annoying to move have been done. Honestly there's a big difference between what our pro cleaner did compared to our neighbour, but that's to be expected. The first time our pro cleaners came I was actually close to tears at how pristine everything looked.
bopeepsheep@reddit
I went with "clean the bathroom and the kitchen and if there's time, vacuum/dust/tidy". Removing those big tasks from my workload gives me more time/energy for the other things. Still muddling along but more gets done because I'm not responsible for all of it.
finallygaveintor@reddit
They’ll clean what you ask them to so it depends what you want. I get mine to do kitchen and bathrooms and floors across the house, then depending what else they have time for other things that need cleaning. I then don’t really have to do anything other than like laundry and dishwasher myself.
Dipso88@reddit
Dusting, wiping down surfaces, bathrooms including toilets and showers, kitchen, hoover and mop all floors, sweep and mop balcony, and ours also does our ironing
joylessbrick@reddit
This only breaks even if you earn more per hour than you'd pay the cleaner.
Under_Pressure_123@reddit
That doesn't make sense, first, I don't clean during my work hours so the value of my free time is whatever I value it as, not what my equivalent hourly rate is at work. Second, outsourcing is not just a financial consideration it's a wellbeing consideration. It's an investment not a cost saving.
bacon_cake@reddit
Why?
joylessbrick@reddit
You can use your free time to clean. Assuming you work 40 hours per week, you have more than enough time to clean. If you pay a cleaner 2 hours a week to clean for you, you're essentially working 40 hours and being paid for 38 because you fork the other 2 for a cleaner.
On minimum wage, over a year, that's quite a lot when instead you could do that yourself and keep the "extra" 2 hours a week worth of money.
If youre making £25 hours an hour, you could justify paying the cleaner half of that because a)you don't have to clean (which nobody really likes but has to) and b)you're still making a profit per hour.
Why is it so difficult to comprehend?
bacon_cake@reddit
It's not difficult to comprehend if your only goal is maximising money, and you have enough spare time to clean yourself. In that case yeah, hiring a cleaner makes financial sense if your time is worth more than the cleaner’s rate.
But you're assuming all free time should (and can) be converted into economic value and that free time has no intrinsic value.
In either example, you're still working 40 hours a week, the options are you either have 2hrs less money and 2hrs more free time, or the full amount of money and less free time. Regardless of actual earnings there's a value other than financial to consider.
Psyfuzz@reddit
You don’t have a cleaner working every hour you do though.
I will pay a cleaner above my hourly rate for 3 hours labour every two weeks, if it makes me more productive and effective in my 40 hour weekly working hours.
joylessbrick@reddit
Check your maths. You need to earn more per hour than your cleaner for it to make financial sense.
I don't like cleaning either, but it doesn't make sense to outsource it to a cleaner if I can't at least break even on costs.
doggirlmoonstar@reddit
How did you find a good one? 😩 I have chronic back issues and literally all I asked for was for the floors to be cleaned, and said specifically not to move anything. I gave up after the 4th cleaner I tried all basically just rearranged and/or hid my painstakingly organised decorations and still never cleaned the floors! They would literally insist there’s no time left or get super angry when I ask and never come back. At my wits end and in agony.
Mane_UK@reddit
I too have a spinal issue - much sympathy.
Very frustrating, I've had people promise to help then instead do other random stuff that makes things more difficult - leaving things on the floor or whatever. I wasn't paying them, but still - why can't they think it through?
I'm really quite cross with those "cleaners" you hired.
Under_Pressure_123@reddit
I mean mine isn't amazing but good enough and I can't be bothered looking for another one so I'm not a good reference. They should really follow your instructions but if your place is very cluttered they might not be able to shift their mindset to just doing the floor.
doggirlmoonstar@reddit
Good insight thanks. As in clutter that’s not on the floor? I have noticed with friends house aswell they have display shelves that their cleaners also rearrange. I know cleaners want to create the illusion of cleanliness by straightening everything but filthy floors stand out more than slightly wonky picture frames.
2c0@reddit
They are also working for you and if you say don't touch X they should not touch X.
doggirlmoonstar@reddit
Absolutely should be the case. Interesting how many of them suddenly can’t speak English well enough to understand! Or actually outright gaslight and insist they did what was asked! My friend had different problem where the cleaner decided super early on that they were besties and started confiding in and getting emotionally codependent on my friend, basically parenting them making excuses to become unreliable and doing an increasingly poor job.
excitedbynaps@reddit
I had to pay my friend to do it. She needs money and I'm too blind and busy for it, so it works out. She knows that if ahe moves anything I wont find it - so she lets me kmow if she needs to. Plus, my cats love her.

doggirlmoonstar@reddit

Kara_Zor_El19@reddit
Hired a cleaner to do my oven and carpets since those are tasks I can no longer do myself. Total for both was £285 but I’d happily pay it again

I guess these are personal to me but these feel like well spent money (I'm a busy professional with a 5 year old boy).
• Paying a removal company to pack your stuff and relocate it for a move, (we had had a baby 2 weeks prior, but hte lack of stress was astounding, especially if you get a good deal)
• Paying a decent cleaner to come and do the basics once per week
• Paying a professional declutterer when you and your partner can never get on top of your stuff (mild hoarding tendencies) to make your home a relaxing place.
• Paying a local cost effective gardener to come and do your deweeding in spring and once more in summer (if you have a garden)
• A subscription for a cooking app like Mob
• Paying for fast track security for an early flight at Stansted
• Booking a sauna/spa experience late morning the night after a first stag do night, or a clubbing experience in another town
• Paying for the reclining seats at some of the newer Odeon / Vue cinema.
• A used electric car, especially one that has V2L like Kia or Hyundai - can connect car fridge, induction hob, air-fryer, or even a heater, camp in spring / autumn, cold drinks and convenient cooking - and especially if you can charge at home. Expect to keep the car for a decade at least- the battery will outlive the condition of the vehicle.
Brent_Goose@reddit
In a similar vein, paying for a hotel at the airport before and after a long flight. My wife and I flew from Heathrow to Tokyo last year and sprang for staying at the Sofitel before our flight. Traveling down the evening before, having a relaxing evening with some drinks and talking about our trip, then waking up rested and walking to security was well worth the additional cost.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
How do they know what tho throw away?
HonestViking@reddit
They are there to guide, assist and teach. You hire them because you know you need to organise your home. Less is more. When we hired ours, the process started days before she arrived. We had to send videos of the room that was going to be dealt with, and open drawers / cupboards etc and show them via video. Also, we had to measure all the drawers because the declutterer sent us links to drawer inserts that would fit perfectly in the drawers.
Upon arrival she immediately organised a charity collection for the following day, with one of her trusted charity pick up companies. She had also arrived with giant, heavy duty black sacks.
There was no pressure to get rid of things but with a bit of encouragement, we realised that half our wardrobes we didn't wear any more, and they were donated. Some items were valuable and my wife kept a pile back to sell on vinted.
By the end of our bedroom there were 3 giant size sacks waiting near the front door, to be collected.
I made it a thing not to peep inside out of fear I would start taking stuff back out.
Honestly, I don't now even remember what I got rid of and don't miss it.
All situations are different. One thing she did really well was brought a label machine, and taught us to roll our clothes instead of folding them. All our clothes now fit in the drawers and wardrobes and have a place. She has a magic touch and a talent and all the "things" now have a place and it's so relaxing being in that environment.
Tall-Reputation-9519@reddit
Agree with most of these, never had a professional declutterer but looking at the amount of stuff our removal company had to move maybe we should have!
Fast track security at Stansted also works on the way home, you can (or at least could) go to the short queue on the passport check coming back into the UK.

Adam-West@reddit
It’s worth mentioning though that with a lot of expensive gear like shoes or outdoors kit the expense comes from the fact it’s high performance. Which doesn’t mean it’s high durability. In fact it’s usually so lightweight that it’s far less durable than the cheap option. E.G. Hoka shoes and a lot of high performance fleece layers from outdoor brands like RAB.

Adidas make cheap ass commodites and sell them for expensive prices, they acquired a mtb/climbing shoe brand called 510 that had a great name for themselves as top quality and slowly ruined them and disgraced the brand with cheaper materials and lower quality production but kept the pricetag right up there.

There’s a name for us in the Anker fandom y’know! Sure you can guess. But they’re so good - I just bought an outdoor speaker and it’s insanely good for the price. Cannot recommend enough!
doc1442@reddit
Anker use the same batteries as every other brand powerbanks btw
JoeBagadonut@reddit
Also a proper lightweight waterproof jacket. I got one from Rains 4-5 years ago and it’s still in great condition and the water just runs right off it and keeps me dry.
HMS_Hexapuma@reddit
I would caveat Anker a little. My partner and I both had the same model of Anker bluetooth headphones and they both disintegrated within a year. Also their sub-brand Eufy does not have a great reputation for data security.
Sad-Nectarine-7855@reddit
Yes, I got rid of my eufy cctv system when I realised how risky it was

I was really disappointed with an Anker charger I picked up. I ended up replacing it with with a maplins one. Credit where's it due anker let me return it free and have me a full refund with zero quibbles which is a rare thing for buisnesses
jrbp@reddit
Maybe. But my cheap Amazon dropshipped barefoot shoes are several shades more comfortable than the 2 or 3 branded pairs I have that were quite expensive. They were worth every penny and also cheap.

A good mattress - considering the time you spend in it and how a bad nights sleep can ruin your whole day - it’s worth getting the best quality mattress you can afford
Ambitious_Catch5175@reddit
Zojirushi insulated bottle - keeps coffee hot for 16 hours at least. Sometimes I am on long road trips and this is fantastic, got mine at Amazon
Stuffa Travel Jacket - can hold a cabin bags worth of kit inside the jacket. Avoids baggage fees and helps with tight connections. Tried a few different types but Stuffa are by far the best. Www.stuffa.co.uk or www.stuffa.us
Be Blunt Knives - decided to get a set of round tipped knives after reading articles about how badly injured people can suffer knife crime with pointed tipped knives. Round tipped knives help reduce the severity of any injure, intentional or non intentional. The knives themselves though are great, super sharp and cut, slice brilliantly. Www.beblunt.co.uk
Motorbike - yeah, any type will do!!
Lazy-Limit-8684@reddit (OP)
That Stuffa jacket thing is genius! Didn’t realise something like that existed. Do you ever get weird looks going through security scanners with it?
Ambitious_Catch5175@reddit
Honestly, never! Just the same as your normal coat, take it off and put it through the scanner. Only thing I used to do before new rules was ensure my toiletry bag was in a certain pocket so that I could take that out separately at security and then pop it back in afterwards. Everything else stays in the jacket.
But it’s also a decent jacket, I wear it 95% of the time when not travelling with only a few bits or nothing in it, and 100% of the time when I’m travelling.

Most games. There's no other entertainment out there that's as worth it as gaming.
On average you get around 60 to 100 hours of entertainment out of a single video game that's cost 70 cash, some people are getting way over 500 hours or even 1000s
Now name one type of entertainment that gives you that much value for money.
The list could go on. But the fact is, gaming is a great value for money hobby and unless you just simply don't enjoy the videogame then it's always worth every penny.

Air con units during heatwaves
IssacHunt89@reddit
If the install cost £2k and lasts 10 years it's only £200 a year to stay comfortable and sleep in the heat waves. Worth it to me.
Aerodye@reddit
A portable unit is £300-500
IssacHunt89@reddit
Can get one for under £150 lidl special.
OrganicPoet1823@reddit
Portable ones are a few hundred
Acceptable-Friend-42@reddit
They end up very noisy and inefficient in my experience
EUskeptik@reddit
Our Daewoo is in its sixth year of use in heatwaves and is just as quiet and efficient as it was when new.
-##-
RFLC1996@reddit
They've come a long way, we got one for £400 fro Amazon last year in the winter (Because it was cheaper then) and its no louder than the fan we would typically use
IssacHunt89@reddit
Lidl were selling them for £110 2 years ago. Cools the caravan nicely.
RFLC1996@reddit
Best purchase we've ever made, feels like air-con is becoming a requirement in this country because of climate change.
IssacHunt89@reddit
It's the way to go. We have better insulated houses now than ever, they literally store heat so that doesn't help and makes air con more attractive.
AcceptableCustomer89@reddit
Yeah but better than no air con whatsoever
MonkeysMonolith@reddit
But still worse than a proper one…
AcceptableCustomer89@reddit
Obviously, but not everyone can afford a proper one
chillinoodle@reddit
And cost 5 - 10x less upfront. Even though split is more efficient, if you're only using it for a couple of weeks a year, the efficiency payback is greater than the lifetime of the unit.
If a portable one can get your room cool it's good enough. Sound is the biggest reason to go split imo.
Thestickleman@reddit
You can custom do a duel hose set up that makes a massive difference
chillinoodle@reddit
I posted my setup on DIYUK a few days ago and have been banging on about it since, made a huge difference.
ThatsJustHowIFeeeeel@reddit
They’re quite loud but are more than adequate enough to get one room comfortable - cold, even.
Absolutely life saving for a few hundred quid. I like white noise when I sleep anyway, so it’s a win win for me.
Greenmedic2120@reddit
Same, I often have a small desktop fan on just to help me drift off so this is perfect 😂
Jimquill@reddit
Are you servicing them?
Greenmedic2120@reddit
I’ve only just bought it so doesn’t need a service, but in the future we probably will do so to keep it running well
Jimmy90081@reddit
They were talking about split unit AC, not a portable.
LUNATIC_LEMMING@reddit
They can also do heat in the winter and are more efficient than central heating I think
IssacHunt89@reddit
They can be upto 400% efficiency. We got rid of the gas meter and went this route.
LUNATIC_LEMMING@reddit
I kinda want one but my portable one works at the moment. Think I'd get one that can do 2 rooms and have the lounge and bedroom. Throw in those standalone solar units and it's be free warm during the day in winter and free cool in The summer.
OkSun8521@reddit
A standard solar panel can generate about 450W at its peak. The standalone ones are probably less. During the winter, you won't be able to even power your lights and fridge, let alone heat your house.
LUNATIC_LEMMING@reddit
I didn't expect it to do the whole house, just aid 1 room.
OkSun8521@reddit
It won't. I was very surprised with just how little you can generate during the winter. Even on bright sunny days, you get almost nothing.
IssacHunt89@reddit
The biggest benefit is they are quiet and more efficient. But portable is still good. Solar panels work in the summer but you will be lucky to see 80watts out of a 800w array in winter months for limited hours.
InternetPerson00@reddit
How much energy does it use? Adding on bills
boomerangchampion@reddit
They cost a few quid a day to run on full blast. It's not cheap but considering it completely changes your life during a heatwave, it's well worth it.
CloudySkies55@reddit
Few quid a day over a month is like £100 increase.
boomerangchampion@reddit
If you run it full blast every day for a whole month, yes. I've never done that.
Tattycakes@reddit
We’ve never had to run our air con all day, they bring a room temperature down surprisingly quickly. We have it in the bedroom at night, and on our study for working from home, and we only spent £15 on running costs for the entire year
IssacHunt89@reddit
My unit covering 4 bedrooms is only using solar and battery leaving no use from the grid so it's very efficient and effective.
doctorace@reddit
Would love to do this, but it makes installation quite expensive up front. We don’t qualify for any help with solar because we’re in a basement flat and it would just be on an awning or pergola
IssacHunt89@reddit
Yeah it's a long term investment going into solar. My system is looking at 4 years before it's made it's money back. Hopefully when they pass plug in solar it will help people start with small systems.
IainMCool@reddit
Mine has been on for a majority of the last week and according to my usage app, it's about £2 a day.
Greenmedic2120@reddit
The one I have is 41p per hour and we only ran it for 1-2 hours in the evening before we went to bed to cook it down. Obviously if you’re running it all day every day that will rack up, but the most important thing to me was sleeping well and I just wasn’t managing to do that with other methods.
ThatsJustHowIFeeeeel@reddit
80p for 2 people to get a good nights sleep and operate better at work is literally a negligible cost.
Can’t believe people are even discussing this.
noodledoodledoo@reddit
Mine costs about £2 a day. I usually have it on all night.
Purp1eMagpie@reddit
£1600 for our split system in the living room. Best thing I've ever bought, honestly
SomethingNotOriginal@reddit
Being fair, you're not necessarily spreading it out over the year, you're spreading out over whenever it's needed, and not many people have the ability to throw £35/night + Electricity.
If the country gets much hotter, then sure, but then you've got ever increasing Energy costs to concern with as well.
I'm not saying that spending £35/night isn't worthwhile, but it's not entirely accurate to say "it's only 60p/day", because for 360 days of the year, you're don't need it.
IssacHunt89@reddit
We use the unit on solar over summer so no electricity costs. Then use it to heat house over winter which works out cheaper than gas boiler. But I get your point.
h4baine@reddit
The comfort is worth the cost to be but comfort aside, it has become a safety issue. Europe is warming twice as fast than the worldwide average. To put it into perspective, substantially more people die from heat in Europe than people die from guns in America. And that's including the majority of gun deaths that are suicides. That's the current data and it's only going to get hotter. Get the AC unit. You deserve to be comfortable and not die a hot sweltering death.
CrispGunther@reddit
There are also substantially more people in Europe than in America. I’ve seen this ‘fact’ trotted out across social media a lot recently, as is some sort of gotcha when to me it is the definition of a meaningless stat
saxbophone@reddit
You are thinking of a permanent AC system, not a portable
IssacHunt89@reddit
I was, it's worth every penny.
budgrummur@reddit
A good unit should last up to 20 years with proper maintenance. If you paid £2k to install one you got fleeced
IssacHunt89@reddit
2k was unit and install.
Jimmy90081@reddit
Where is an install only £2k? The unit alone is probably £2k, so that’s £4k, covering install, and hardware. Then you have yearly split unit AC maintenance and the cost of electricity. Total cost of ownership is more than £200 a year.
IssacHunt89@reddit
Mine was that for a 24k BTU unit. Can clean it yourself as that's all a service is. Don't want to connect gauges to it once a year to check gas level as you are removing a small amount of refrigeratant each time in the hoses/gauges. Also run it on solar so effectively free to run.
TotallyStressedMe@reddit
Depends on size and capacity. One to cater for the Albert Hall might cost well over £4k
Civil-Koala-8899@reddit
I got one installed earlier this year for £1.3k
adamneigeroc@reddit

We're British. We're meant to endure the weather, not adapt to it. Otherwise what will we have to moan about?
fickle_tartan@reddit
You can still moan about it with a/c, complain about the extra energy it's using, for example, or just the fact it's so hot out that you need it.
Ralphisinthehouse@reddit
We're meant to endure cold weather, not the surface of the sun weather.
odjobz@reddit
I would argue that moaning that it still feels like winter in May, and then moaning that it feels like the Sahara a few days later is a quintessential part of British summertime.
Bogpot@reddit
But it almost was like that. 3c a few weeks ago to 30c+ in the last week.
petey_love@reddit

Greenmedic2120@reddit
Don’t worry, I will still be contributing to the moaning when I step outside 😂
MorningToast@reddit
You just switch from moaning about the heat to moaning about people who don't just buy an aircon to deal with the heat.
odjobz@reddit

Few random ones for me:
Organic Cucumbers - some organic stuff I think is a waste of money - but cucumbers? Definitely worth every penny for me. Circa 95% water, and free from pesticides & forever chemicals? No brainer.
Hoka trainers. For years I’d buy whatever sports direct / outlet shops had in my size for £30-£50, 3-6 months later back buying more. Tried Hoka last year, wow. Game changers, can’t see me going back to the mass marketed brands found on every high street.
Molton Brown shower gel & shampoo. Suffered from itchy flaky scalp most my adult life - until I discovered MB Indian Cress shampoo. Wow. 15-20 years now. I’ve tried others in that time, whatever wife/kids use etc, itchy scalp returns - so the MB shampoo is worth every penny. Feel the same about their shower gel too. Seems pricey, until I work out that I’m burning through 3-6 bottles of Lynx/nivea/source in the same amount of time as 1 bottle of MB. Also feel cleaner and fresher using it, no going back!

Can you recommend any that also have a decent microphone?
I was looking for some which I could wear while working from home which I could also use during Teams calls etc. But seemingly lots of the leading ANC headphones have quite poor mics?
dandotcomhacked69@reddit
I am by no means an expert on this - I had some Technics (AZ80) which had fairly good ANC but the mic was not that great. I have some Galaxy bud 4 pros on the way.
Sony WF100MX5 or MX6 apparently have really good ANC and built in mic's
MrStilton@reddit
I had previously looked at Sony's, but know someone who had MX4's and said the mic was pretty poor, which is what put me off.
dandotcomhacked69@reddit
I watched quite a few video reviews of the bud 4 pros and they seem to have a decent enough mic on them from some of the tests / examples shown, but I also have a Samsung and mainly wanted to keep the hardware in the same environment. What I was able to gather form most of these reviews for other headphones is a similar issue with the mic's: decent enough in quiet conditions but not as clear in a busy area - Anker Liberty 5 Pro Max seemed to have decent mic quality

We grew up quite poor, not poverty but money was very tight. All our stuff was second hand, or the cheapest options from the shop. This kinda stuck with me as an adult, for example I’d rarely splurge on expensive brands even if I had the money because in my head I just couldn’t justify spending £200 on a ninja air fryer when I could get a cheap one for £40. Until I met my partner who had a very privileged upbringing and I thought he was a bit of a brand snob. We’ve been living together for a couple of years now and most of my cheap crap stuff has been replaced and a few things I really appreciate now that I do feel is actually well worth paying the extra for:
Also one thing I have always splurged on is hair straighteners because a decent pair of GHDs are worth their weight in gold lol.

FlagVenueIslander@reddit
Yes! I didn’t say within my message but I bloody hate the term birth control. Any methods that I use don’t actually control any kind of birthing process, the reduce the likelyhood of conception!!
Let’s ban the term birth control!

I wasn't advocating for any sort of ban. Just making a comment on the frequency of the use of the various terms.

A way to keep cool in hot weather.
I have a freestanding air conditioning unit that I happened to get for free. If it broke, I’d absolutely buy a replacement. It might only see use a few weeks of the year, but it makes such a difference, and the UK now consistently has several such weeks every year, so it’s well worth it as a long-term investment.
At the very least, getting a really good tower fan or similar is a no-brainer.
Also, if storage space in your home is limited, renting a storage unit can be a really good idea. You can use it to store stuff that is seasonal, extremely situational, or things that you just can’t bring yourself to part with but would clutter up your home.

Air con unit for me, For years I couldn’t decide, and worried about the cost, I got one last year, it’s not overly expensive, maybe £1 for 5 hours use,
When you break it down like that, for the max 10 times you need it a year it’s a bargain. Wish I got one years ago.
Get an air con unit, you won’t regret it.
No-Cherry-6678@reddit
I don't even need a fan in my house! Heating in winter though+++++
Battleborn300@reddit
Haha that’s fair everyone to themselves,
One thing I find odd, in my experience whether it is in your car or in your house, air con is extremely cheap in comparison to heating,
Obviously I won’t sit there shivering, but as the cost of energy has increased I am happy to have the house at 18 degrees and wrap up, than 22.
Meanwhile bringing the temperature down by 5 degrees (or more) when it’s 30degrees or more, for £1 is genuinely heaven.
joylessbrick@reddit
How are you dealing with the condensation? That's the last step left for me to figure out before buying one. I've read reviews about it leaking and I'm not sure i can be arsed to wake up during the night and emptying it.
Battleborn300@reddit
I bought it April last year, I think I put it away in September The effort in draining it was a ball ache, especially given there wasn’t much to drain. I have never had it leak, but I suspect I will empty it again in September, I can’t imagine it would be anywhere near full.
But equally I’m not running it all night, I will usually have it on from an hour before I leave work, Then that takes the edge off for when I get home, will turn it back on in bedroom for an hour before bed, and sometimes put a timer on for it to turn off after I go to bed.
So yeah the leaking, or getting up in the middle of night, I’ve not experienced

tt-23@reddit
I’m not so sure on this one - had my cat 14 years and if I add up every penny he’s cost me, directly (food, vets) or indirectly (damage mainly), we’re easily looking at a house deposit worth of money.
ld4484@reddit
Quick maths shows I have probably paid out well over 50k in the 16.5yr I had my cat. We lost her in Jan. I would give absolutely anything to have her back. Every single penny was worth it. I would have paid out more if needed. Money means nothing in comparison. It might mean I am stuck renting for the rest of my life now, but she was worth it.

We ended up with a Posturepedic latex-topped extra deep superking mattress, cost us £1700, and it's lasted us 6 years. It's like sleeping on a cloud and my back/neck issues went away basically overnight. Incredible buy.

The only reason I ask is that I have an old mattress and got a mattress topper on Freecycle. When I went to pick it up, the lady giving it away said to me, Do you want a spare one?
I said, Ok, thanks!
Took them home, then put one topper on the mattress. Then thought, Where am I going to store this??
Then suddenly had the brain wave to store it on top of the other topper (I could have stored it underneath but I suspect it doesn't really make any difference :D ).
Now my mattress is so soft, it's like sleeping in the giant palm of a god, and I really hate firm beds in hotels.

I've tried so many different ones but always come back to weber (even better if it's the coconut briquettes, but harder to find at a good price)
Lazy-Limit-8684@reddit (OP)
Lumpwood. I’m reasonably new to BBQing so haven’t had time to do loads of experimentation yet. Have it in my head that lump wood would give a better flavour but the speed of the burn makes it hard to cook for a large group

Lumpwood for direct cooking, briquettes for longer cooks/smoking.

I’ve been provided with hundreds (even up to a couple thousand) of pounds just for asking when I lost various jobs because I couldn’t pay my bills. At one point I was briefly unemployed and homeless, got offered a new job but had no money for a deposit for a place near to where it was. Sent them an email and had £500 on a cheque within days.
The first time I needed it I had to fill in a survey thing with my costs, but the two times after that they just wrote cheques. Let me get back on my feet. Brilliant.

Ocado, nice aftershave (tom ford etc), a nice gym (not pure gym or the gym etc) and youtube premium
hopehippo668@reddit
I've never been in a 'nice' gym. I slum it in Pure Gym for £20 a month. In all seriousness, what does the extra money get you? I've been in three Pure Gyms and tbf one was a dump, but the other two are really clean and all the equipment is in good condition and I've never had to wait to use something so I'm not sure what the extra money would get me. Is it just decor, essentially?
drunkemonkee@reddit
Typically the nicer gyms will have much better showers, changing areas, sauna, pool, things like that. I've also found the budget gyms tend to have more teens hanging out in groups hogging one piece of equipment or on their phones.
lildogeggs@reddit
In my case better gyms I’ve been to have had pools, sauna/steamroom etc as well as the clientele being a lot better and well behaved
hopehippo668@reddit
The clientele thing you're probably right about. I only ever go between 11pm and 9am tbh so I think I miss a lot of the badly behaved ones.
If I was going in the evenings and the choice was a £20 Pure Gym with bad behaviour and a nicer chain at £40 with none of that, I might choose the latter but thankfully it's not an issue for me.

1) My mattress. My wife convinced me to try a traditional one after really crappy sleep on lots of different kinds (including Simba and other crap that claims to have an easy returns policy.... Screw them). I've never slept as well as I do now. Cost about £1500, and before it arrived it sounded expensive. Now I've got it it seems cheap.

We’re a low income household so we usually wouldn’t be able to justify paying for someone else to do things we can do ourselves or live without. But with a baby and a toddler I’m realistically not going to find time to do it myself, plus I don’t have the tools to do as nice a job. It’s a simple pleasure but it brings me so much joy driving off in a nice clean car.

Two things in my house that I am obsessed with and wouldn’t want to live without:
A fitted (not portable) AC unit in the bedroom. It’s absolutely silent, and keeps the room so cool. When it’s very hot, at least we have one very cool room, so we, and our dog, can stay cool the entire time.
An electronic clothes dryer. Imagine an old school clothes dryer that is attached to the ceiling and moved with ropes - it’s a bit like that, but it’s metal, and controlled with a remote control. It takes up no floor space, so the clothes are dried up by the ceiling.

Spotify, and honestly (controversial one) McDonald's. Their seasonal/'premium' products are way overpriced, but I cannot complain about paying £1.29 for a hamburger or £2.20 for a wrap of the day. And if you're on the app, you get offers every week, plus points on what you buy. So if you do McDonald's the 'right' way I think it's great value for money.

We were travelling to the Netherlands with friends and one of them used his Irish passport to skip the customs queues.
