Doom 1 and 2 have insane landscapes and can literally run on a potato
AssAdmiral_@reddit
I don't think listing over 30 year old games is the point of this thread
-Best_Name_Ever-@reddit
You're getting downvoted, but you're right in that anon's intent was probably "Graphically impressive games that are well optimized" so I agree that it doesn't fit the spirit of the thread lol
It probably passes in terms of technicality, but IMO "well optimized games" is a much more interesting discussion/collection than "stylistically impressive games", of which we already have a morbillion threads on.
knou1@reddit
even the modern ones run on the og switch
SeamusMcCullagh@reddit
And they run well. Those folks at Id really know how to optimize.
Draidann@reddit
Compared to most games from the same time period doom is still an outstanding technical achievement and you can get it to run on a calculator. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more fitting game for the thread.

Is this some kinda Tron WAD or something? Looks awesome and would love to give it a crack if you can be bothered.
AssAdmiral_@reddit
Well yeah, I guess that's true π€ I mean, it WAS good looking and the tech behind it IS insane, and actually lol it might even run on a literal potato. And kooking at the votes, I guess it was actually ME who misunderstood the thread π

Bf1 cannot run on a potato
WREN_PL@reddit
Definition of a potato PC moves over time. My GTX1050Ti is nowadays back to being a potato card.
6pussydestroyer9mlg@reddit
Potato is integrated graphics for me. BF1 does run on newer integrated graphics but I highly doubt any cpu older than a few generations has the power for it.
AceOfEpix@reddit
For me potato pc is something that cannot run games over 5 years old on anything above minimal requirements. If youre hitting the point that a game is half a decade old and you can barely run it, time to upgrade.
CrustyBatchOfNature@reddit
How many gens back you want to go? The game is 10 years old and the recommended CPU was a Intel Core i7 4790 / AMD FX 8350 Wraith but it would run on Core i5 6600K / AMD FX-6350. That's 10 generations of CPU releases for Intel and around the same for AMD (maybe 8 for AMD).
6pussydestroyer9mlg@reddit
That requirement means jack shit if you read the comment and see that I'm talking about integrated graphics here. Newer CPU's have better integrated graphics (ie: Iris Xe) and don't need a dedicated GPU to run the game. If you were to pick any of the CPU's you listed they would shit the bed without a graphics card to carry that burden.
Joshgg13@reddit
I feel called out :(
JuggerBuzz@reddit

Game from 2008 and still holds up
stronkreptile@reddit
i love that game
Successful_Chair4921@reddit
Mirror's Edge is infamous for severe frame rate drops on PC
kilqax@reddit
The biggest reason is that they baked in most of kf the lighting in production so your PC actually doesn't have to handle it. It's not really something done today but used to be way more common before, although Mirror's Edge really went far.
Of course, baked in lighting makes interacting with it hard (and doesn't make sense in many games today), but tbh there still are so many games where it would make sense...
NullHypothesisCicada@reddit
The color palette certainly helps though, but yeah the game still looks cool as fuck by todayβs standards (apart from the PS3-esque UI)
CarlosFlare@reddit
Red Dead Redemption 2 actually runs pretty well on a mid PC.

Totally true. I played that gorgeous game on a 2016 gtx 960 4gb setup on 2020 that hapened to be exploited 24/7 afk farming on black desert for 4 years and somehow, the game ran with very beautiful landscapes and graphics at 40 fps. I was extremely impressed.
tastysardine@reddit

Worst MGS game Kojima ever directed, though. Maybe it'd be better if it had been finished...
Also, fuck Konami.
eelikay@reddit
Fox engine my beloved, RIP. Fuck konami
surferos505@reddit
It was kojimas faultΒ
fluffynuckels@reddit
Doesn't mean that Konami cant use the fox engine. They also didn't need to make mgs survivor
AHighAchievingAutist@reddit
How do? Genuinely curious, I donβt know the backstory
KiwiCounselor@reddit
It was a bit multifaceted. Kojima was going full auteur and going over budget and missing deadlines but also Konami were sequestering him away from his team. Faults lie on both sides from what I can tell.
a_generic_redditer@reddit
I fully believe it was Konamis fault.
Its known they were doing that team separation bullshit to devs (not just to higher ups but on every single level) before and after MGSV. that would immediately blow up the budget of game development as it requires immense coordination.
Imagine a map designer needs a watchtower in thier level, but they cant contact the model team or even the specific modeller who was making the watchtower without going through leaps and bounds with management activity sabotaging them.
Now Imagine that in every single step of the games creation.
We also know that Konami wanted out of the game industry, which gave them good reason to cancel any big games they had in development; such as Kojimas silent hill game which would have beenin development long after any problems Kojima would have started to course for the company. They'd have never given him the project if he was causing all the problems they alleged he did.
I don't think Kojima was this paragon of a designer or anything, he definitely didn't help with his overambitious mindset and splitting the game into 2, but from what little has been definitivly revealed and what can be inferred, I don't see how Kojima was in the wrong in the way that Konami claims.
Mean_Introduction543@reddit
I donβt think weβll ever know the full story but he was vice head of Konamiβs digital games division when he got booted.
I think itβs safe to say that they wouldnβt just get rid of a vice department head for no reason.
Thereβs also the fact that during this period (2011-2015) their revenue tanked and there were rumours he was siphoning budget from other projects to pour into MGSV (which blew out on both release date and budget) and silent hill.
FLUBEK@reddit
They should've let him finish Silent Hills, this game with Kojima being director, Reedus as main character and Junji Ito being responsible for design of monsters would've been the best horror game ever
SeamusMcCullagh@reddit
Guillermo Del Toro, not Junji Ito.

MGSV is the perfect "my pc is broken i need a game to keep me busy for two weeks on the shitty laptop thats neen lended to me" game
Wenai@reddit
I dont know, its a beautiful game, with awesome gameplay mechanics - buts its also an open world that feels utterly devoid of life.
i_eat_biscuits@reddit
to be fair, it is a desert
The_Pale_Blue_Dot@reddit
See, I used to have this view and say this to defend the game.
But then a friend pointed out to me that MGS V isn't a desert simulator. If a game is going to have an open world it needs things in it to justify its existence. BotW/TotK has deserts, but they don't seem quite as empty or meaningless as MGS V's.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game and I would drive around that open world just doing random stuff, but they could have done a better job of conveying a desolate desert but still putting more activities in it.
i_eat_biscuits@reddit
Yeah, I agree. MGSV was rushed, especially near the 3rd act of the story. Kojima definetly improved his game design going forward though with open world games like Death Stranding
Bloodhoven_aka_Loner@reddit
And MGSV also has non-desert areas.

tauran10@reddit
As an avid fan of Dishonored 1, the graphics certainly aren't great but the art style is where it's strength is. The overall game just has an amazing ambience carried heavily by the visuals.
The gritty nature of the environment is just so immersive and their ability to work with such monotone colours and still make a visually fantastic game I think is great
To be fair it that's until you look at your feet on the floor of Sam's boat and from memory I think there's a coiled up rope that's just a 2D image that's a part of boat texture. (It's been a bit since I've played but there's many other examples similar)
I think your opinion is completely fair but I just adore that game and have played it through maybe 20+ times so I gotta defend it.

The first TR just had smart game design alongside good optimisation, a large portion of the game is close quarters so LOD and draw distance werenβt crazy high and therefore not GPU intensive.
Rise and shadow the maps opened up a lot more and you can tell with the hardware requirements jumping up.

I know some of you want newer and atmospheric games to be listed here but Battle for Middles East 2/RotWK and Dawn of War 1 also look very cool and I suppose they run quite good on any pc that is alive today.
Also Timberborn and both Hades & Hollow Knight games
k_GOBL1N@reddit
Dark Souls II runs extremely well because it makes amazing use of baked shadows instead of real time shadows so if you turn off the shadows, it still looks nice and shady. Iβve never seen a semi-modern game use baked shadows that much.

More niche, I'll admit. But Running Train Sim compared to any other train or transport simulation game. Potato might be a stretch but for the visuals you get, the developer had to have made a deal with Satan to get it working on older hardware. Look the game up and see what it looks like. It runs on steam deck with no issues. Insanity.

I hate to be that guy but they both look kinda ass even for the time period. Portal 2 was released the same year as Skyrim. Dead space predates it.
ASentientBot@reddit
tbf, much easier for portal 2 to look nice because it's entirely indoors, no vegetation, etc. still good for its time but idk if it's a fair comparison with skyrim

Old games CAN be good looking with good art design but doom, to a modern audience, is not.
Eeeeeeeeeeelias@reddit
For the most part icl that's so true. But there's something about leaving the sewers for the first time and seeing cyrodiil and the imperial city that's just stunning to me. They really did it justice in the remaster.
EridaniNovus@reddit
I mean. Skyrim SE I can agree with. Old Skyrim is rough at some points and Oblivion (though I love it) is god awful to look at.
