Cadet Programs

I have been seeing a lot of mixed reviews about cadet pilot programs. I was wondering if they are worth it or not. I just got my private a couple of weeks ago and I am currently working on my instrument rating with goals to work at the airlines. I wanted to see if there were any benefits in doing a cadet program or not. Thanks!

I went through a cadet program and was flying for a major US airline in 4 years, starting with zero experience. It was supposed to be shorter than that but we had delays with COVID and other things. I wouldn't say it was 100% smooth, and you're still at the mercy of the overall job market and industry conditions. If your airline isn't hiring when you're done, then they're not hiring. They're not magically going to take only you.
But it was a lot faster to get to a major than if I'd done everything on my own. And while a lot of people were still talking about nobody hiring them right in this sub, I was in initial training.
So yeah, worth it. If you're thinking you're going to do this as your career forever, then the most important thing is to get to the airlines as soon as possible. Speed is all that really matters. Get that seniority number ASAP and start building your pay rate up. It does not matter if you have to pay a little more for the training up front. It might cost an extra $20-$30k now but you'll potentially make an extra $1 million or more by the end of your career as a result of that. (That's assuming hitting higher pay rates a year or two earlier through your entire career, and getting to the top level earlier too.) Even if it only gives you a few months advantage, that's more than enough to make up for the extra up front cost in the long run.

Worth it and nearly required for some regionals.
That being said do not go to a fancy 130k dollar pilot mills because of the cadet programs. There are plenty of other ways into them without those schools and the 50-70k markup is not worth it.

So going to a 141 for certain cadet program is not a good idea.but I thought only 141 have cadet programs.
Are you saying that there are cadet programs that we can join even if we train at a 61?
Keeping $50k-$70k in pocket does sound smart. lol

Yes. There are several that will take cadets from any school or have a much larger choice of schools to go with.
Also I am not saying don’t go part 141, there are many smaller 141 programs that are great.
Don’t go to a pilot mill, some are 141 some are part 61, ATP for example is part 61 (mostly) and is the biggest pilot mill there is.

🫡🫶 did you apply to any cadet program as well? Or just grind to the minimum hours and applied off the streets.

Which country are we talking? I’m an LCP at a US regional. I sign people off to line and 18-36 months later they quit and go to a major. Good for them. 90% of them are part of the cadet program so I think if you DONT go that route, the odds are against you. If you’re talking about Europe or Asia then it’s the only way. In Australia it’s a scam. Don’t do them.

They are worth as long as there are no contracts.

"Worth it" is relative to the timeframe. Recently they were "worth it" in the last year or two. A few years ago they werent. Sign up for them all, it cant really hurt.
