What TV/film couples do you think did NOT have chemistry?

It’s so weird when something you’re watching pairs up two characters that just don’t have the sexual chemistry. On the flip side, which character pairings do you think had great chemistry?
I feel like Harry and Hermione had more chemistry than Ron and Hermione tbh. In the films anyway.

Chakotay and Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager
On the other hand, Chakotay and Janeway were will-they-won't-they for basically the entire show. They didn't.
EruditeKetchup@reddit
I watched Voyager when it was first airing on UPN (yes, am a dirty Yank) and thought Janeway and Chakotay would make a good couple. There was an episode where they were stranded together on some planet for about a year and I honestly thought they were going to get together then. I lost interest when 7 of 9 came along and started hanging out with Chakotay. Also I read on the Usenet groups that Kate Mulgrew and Robert Beltrán didn't get along IRL.
I_ALWAYS_UPVOTE_CATS@reddit
My gf and I exchanged glances during that episode when the only thing Janeway wanted was for Chakotay to build her a headboard.
Leading_Thanks7443@reddit
My fav bit was where he was trying to confess his feelings and she started trying to play with a monkey (not a euphemism)
lovesorangesoda636@reddit
Ahh the bath carving episode...
I read a lot of fan fic back in the day with Janeway/Chakotay together.
Middle_Care978@reddit
I think often about when Chakotay carved a bath for Janeway.
RaspberryJammm@reddit
Rewatching it currently and I think Janeway and Seven have chemistry!!
Fourkey@reddit
Mulgrew and Ryan apparently really didn't get on
ScallyGirl@reddit
At first. I read somewhere that Mulgrew wasn't happy with the way Ryan was being pushed as she felt it was taking away from her, but then she got over herself and they ending up getting along.
Fourkey@reddit
I thought it was longer than that and they didn't actually interact outside of on set until much later.
JayR_97@reddit
And when they get stuck on that planet together Janeway basically ended up friend zoning him
noodlesandwich123@reddit
Omg yes, Star Trek then repeated this with a will-they-won't-they with Archer and T'Pol in Enterprise only for her to have a throwaway fling with Tucker in the last few episodes
scisteve@reddit
I really don’t pick up on the Chakotay and Janeway will they won’t they thing and I’m glad regardless it came to nothing. The Seven of Nine romance came literally out of nowhere and I’m glad it fizzled out.
Queen_of_London@reddit
Janeway and Seven had amazing chemistry, and it's not just fanfic writers who think that (fanfic writers will pair *anyone* up).
Blackmore_Vale@reddit
I remember reading somewhere it was some suggestion by the actor of chakotay who thought they wouldn’t go through with it, with episode left. Turns out they did go through with it.

CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
whereas her sister Daisy and BiL Onslow (Judy Cornwell/Geoffrey Hughes) really look like a healthy, well-matched, honest relationship
CatBunny666@reddit
It’s shown in the series that despite Hyacinth’s flaws, Richard does really love her. I can’t remember exactly which episodes, but there’s one episode where she thinks he doesn’t love her and he turns around and gives her a genuine kiss and cuddle and another episode where he says to someone something along the lines of “she might be a lot but she is very kind”.
horoscopical@reddit
Honestly with them, I get the impression Hyacinth likes being a traditional housewife and Richard likes having a traditional housewife with dinner on the table when he gets home.
GlitchingGecko@reddit
At that time, there were millions of traditional housewives in England. There was only one Hyacinth.
Christ, can you imagine Hyacinth and Basil married instead? I'm not sure who'd drive who batty first.

WiganGirl-2523@reddit
C'mon people! ANAKIN AND PADME.
Ron and Hermione are runners up.
Daveii_captain@reddit
They were so bad that I assumed it was deliberate.
I believe Bertolt Brecht didn’t want his audience to get swept up in the story and miss the message so would deliberately put jarring things in to his plays break the spell. V-Effekts I think they were called. (This is knowledge from nearly 40 years ago so forgive me if I have it a bit off)
I can only assume AotC is a Brechtian film where Lucas wanted us to think rather than feel. Maybe all the prequels were?
Oghamstoner@reddit
Their romance in Attack of the Clones is just horrible! I don’t know whether it’s the acting or the dialogue, but it doesn’t work at all. Revenge of the Sith is a significant improvement though.
Aramithius@reddit
It's 90% the dialogue. If you turn the sound off on those scenes and watch the physical acting, it's more passable.
earlgreytoday@reddit
Both the dialogue and the way their romance played out was just terribly written. There are some deleted scenes from AOTC that aren't too bad, but the actors should've been allowed to improvise their scenes like Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford did in ESB.
Wonderful-Pianist-62@reddit
They did. The dinner conversation is improvised.
Inevitable_Tower_141@reddit
Harry and Ginny has to be worse. Complete assassination of the wit, care and chemistry in the books. Ron and Hermione were never given much anyway imo

Dimac99@reddit
Kelly Reilly and Ciarán Hinds in Above Suspicion. I don't know if it was ever meant to be or become sexual chemistry, but there was zero chemistry of any sort at all between the two of them and leads need to gel in some way to work. Even enemies have a chemistry, but these two had zilch. I know I'm bound to upset someone with this but I think it was because Reilly is a terrible actor, really wooden, and I genuinely cannot understand how she keeps getting cast. She came close to ruining Calvary for me.

River and the 11th Doctor. I felt like when she was first introduced to the 10th Doctor in the library, it felt like she really had a connection to him. But when she returned, it felt like they were only together because they knew they were supposed to be.
MissyManaged@reddit
THANK YOU. It's wild that she has so much more chemistry with the two Doctors she has a single story with than the one she's a recurring character for.
Him being so awkward whilst she's so forward combined with the whole >!she's actually his best friend's daughter twist!< make for a really uncomfortable dynamic, but the show wants you to believe she's his one true love.
If you cut out all her episodes with 11 and just focus on her 10 & 12 stories, it actually becomes more believable.
ifyouwanttosingout@reddit
I wonder if I should pick DW up again from the 12th Doctor. I stopped after the pandorica I think because it felt like the story got very convoluted without a coherent payoff, plus the whole thing with River just made me really uncomfortable. I remember being especially uncomfortable with their wedding.
MissyManaged@reddit
As someone who was frustrated but a lot of 11's run, including the convoluted stort arcs, I felt 12 was a huge improvement. S8 & 9 aren't perfect, but a bit step up. I loved S10 though.
ifyouwanttosingout@reddit
It's such a relief to know other people feel the same way about 11 haha. Maybe I'll revisit the show. 😊
ChrisRR@reddit
When you work backwards from river's timeline it's a really manipulative relationship

I haven't seen it in so long, but the wedding was really unpleasant in my opinion. Felt arranged rather than out of true love.

CasualGamerMWE@reddit
considering the nature of that show being the moral decline of Walter, and the character arc about Skylar cheating with Ted. I'm not sure they were supposed to have chemistry (or were supposed to reflect a decaying marriage).
RoutineAbroad3486@reddit
I mean it was intentionally written so that Skylar and Walt had none. Gretschen was his “one that got away” and he’s basically settled with some common bird with a dogshit attitude

Joey and Rachel in Friends. They built the series up for Joey to be like a brother to Rachel then tried to make them a thing.
lankymjc@reddit
Isn’t that the point of that plotline? They were terrible together and that’s where most of the jokes came from.
They were both in a place where they wanted a relationship, but weren’t actually in love either each other and needed to realise that they should look elsewhere.
Zavodskoy@reddit
And his chemistry with Phoebe was unmatched with anyone else he dated / slept with the entire show
electricmohair@reddit
The first storyline where he was in love with her was great and very in character for Joey. It was established that he wanted that closeness with a woman but rushed to sex before a relationship would properly get going, so of course he’d fall for one of his best friends. But Rachel liking Joey later on felt so weird, nothing about him seemed like Rachel’s type at all.
releasethekaren@reddit
It annoys me that they dumbed her down and flanderised her to make it seem more realistic that she’d like him
electricmohair@reddit

mondo_generator@reddit
I still believe pairing those two together was a truly awful decision. Absolutely nobody wanted that to happen. I can't imagine the actors were happy with it either.

James Bond and Madeline Swann in Spectre and NTTD. He looked about double her age and she had a constant upset expression on her face. Zero chemistry in either film
Suspicious_Union_224@reddit
I enjoyed the bit in Spectre where they're like "We've just survived a shootout on a train in the middle of the desert. Obviously we need to have sex RIGHT NOW!" I know it's a Bond film and the boundaries for "realism" are fairly low, but it felt so forced that it took me right out of it.
ImportanceTop5314@reddit
and the filmmakers have the audacity to keep trying to tell the audience "This is just like Bond and Tracy!" with all the forces OHMSS callbacks.
SomethingNotOriginal@reddit
Especially when you compare it to how Craig was able to make it work with Eva Green; "I have no armour left; you stripped it from me. Whatever is left of me, whatever I am - I'm yours".
Within the same films with Seydoux, Craig had a better rapport with Ana De Armas and Naomie Harris (and the scene I'm thinking of was done via phone call as Bond was being chased by Temu Jaws).
adhdontplz@reddit
I hated her character so much it made NTTD unsalvagable for me. Both Ana De Armas and Monica Belluci were much more charasmatic and played much more interesting characters.
MissingLink101@reddit
Yep that felt so forced. I like her in other things but there was nothing between them.

Christian Bale and Katie Holmes in Batman Begins.
jetjitters@reddit
similarly, Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz in The Batman. I get his character was supposed to be quite stunted and a bit of a weirdo but I just didn't feel any chemistry between them

I can’t remember what it was called… The Materialists? That romcom with Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal. Zero chemistry… not surprising based on her acting abilities. They had better chemistry on the press tour. Full disclosure, I’ve not seen it, I’m judging by the bits I’ve seen.
I think he’s spoken since about his confidence in the role being low after an injury stopped him working out and caused him to gain weight.
Suspicious_Union_224@reddit
Her character ends up not going for Pedro Pascal in the end, so that wouldn't necessarily have mattered. The problem was that she didn't have any chemistry with Chris Evans either. I think it would have been much truer to the message of the film if she hadn't ended up with anyone.
azcaliro@reddit
It’s a pretty good watch and I would recommend it. Their lack of chemistry is very much a part of the point and their romance is not the heart of what the film is about so it doesn’t ruin it
Plastic_Doughnut_911@reddit

Leonard and Penny from The Big Bang Theory
AvidCoco@reddit
I really disliked how they had to have Penny change so much and for Leonard to not change at all. Very much feels like an incel fantasy where he changes her into his perfect partner whilst making no effort to change himself.
InviteAromatic6124@reddit
Her getting pregnant in the final episode despite being very adamant she didn't want kids and being happy about it was a real slap in the face to child free women.
AvidCoco@reddit
She gives up on pretty much everything that defined her character in the first season just to be the perfect trophy wife for Leonard.
Aramithius@reddit
I think that half the pinky is that relationship was that it was meant to be awkward. Leonard didn't know what to do with a girl properly, and Penny was desperate for attention that didn't treat her like meat. So they both just went with it because one didn't know better, and the other could put up with the awkwardness.
At least, that's how I took it.
Character-Yogurt3602@reddit
YES. Came here to say the same, I think they’re just such an odd pairing and more like best friends than romantic interests.
Talie5040@reddit
Much prefer them as friends. Leonard could've had a character arc to stop being shallow and swooning over Penny just because she's pretty and instead look for someone he connects with. Penny could've helped him.

I think midsomer murders Barnaby and Joyce didn't have much chemistry
SparklyZigZag@reddit
That's because she was responsible in some way for every murder. I'm sure of it. And thus Joyce wasn't emotionally available to Barnaby. And he was so busy "solving" all her murders that he didn't have time to notice.
Ok_Aioli3897@reddit
I mean she was around for a lot of them

I think part of that was because Joyce was written as a one dimensional policeman's wife who just bimbles about. Jane Wymark wasn't a bad actor but John Nettles got to do more with Barnaby, based on the storylines.

Scott and Kip from Heated Rivalry. The actors had no chemistry so it was a hard watching that episode.
McBahtman@reddit
There is no greater answer to this question than Anakin and Padme. So much so that it genuinely ruins the entire arc of the prequels for me and makes AOTC specifically insufferable to watch.
The entire story hinges on their relationship, it's Anakin's main motivation for turning to the dark side, to protect Padme from a death he believes is coming. The emotional centre of that whole trilogy is this relationship, and it being so bad makes the whole thing fall flat on its face for me.
Despite Hayden trying his best (which in itself isn't great) with terrible material, there is literally nothing that can convince me that him and Padme are a reasonable and realistic couple. Aside from them being incredibly toxic, unrealistic and borderline psychotic as a pairing, they just have no chemistry whatsoever. Natalie Portman is acting opposite a plank of wood whilst she's given next to nothing to work with in regards to her character, especially in ROTS where she has no character at all.
God the prequels suck ass.
HenshinDictionary@reddit
Hayden does an amazing job. Just because you don't like the character, that doesn't mean his performance is bad. You're angry at the actor because he accurately portrayed a broody teen in a religious cult who had no concept of how to socialise.
Missus_Nicola@reddit
I agree, I don't buy them as a couple, but i definitely buy him as the toxic obsessive guy that his character becomes
McBahtman@reddit
Passable? Yeah, given what he had to work with.
Amazing? Yeah, nah. That ain't it Chief.
He struggles to emote in the most basic fashion, his whole performance is just stern looks and crying face. There's no nuance or complexity to anything he's doing. I don't doubt that he was limited by the terrible writing and poor directing, but let's not sit here and delude ourselves into thinking he does anything remotely close to amazing.
The only person in that whole trilogy who you can put on that level is Ewan McGregor, and maybe Ian as Palpatine.

They really did Harry and Ginny dirty in the films. There was zero chemistry and it was so awkward. Bad
Sheridan and Delenn in Babylon 5
Will and Elizabeth in Pirates of the Caribbean. Kept waiting for her to run off with Jack.
* Seven and Chakotay in Star Trek Voyager (Kes and Neelix too)
Good
Riker and Troi in Star Trek TNG
Mulder and Scully in X-Files
* Maverick and Iceman in Top Gun
CarpeCyprinidae@reddit
I always found this really clever. Riker is drawn as a traditionally masculine man as a contrast to Picard's modern, fair and unjudging outlook - but they paired him up with a sensitive and modern woman as a way of showing that he wasnt a throwback in all aspects of his life
Khaleesi1536@reddit
I’ll never forgive Disney for Elizabeth and Jack not ending up together
GlitchingGecko@reddit
They had so much more chemistry.
So did Will and Jack.
and even Will and Elizabeth and Jack.
But Will and Elizabeth on their own were so dull.
Tall-Maintenance5558@reddit
Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence in Passengers.
Glittering_Habit_161@reddit
Theo and Lizzy from The Buccaneers.
azcaliro@reddit
Only watched this for certain musicians I adored in the soundtrack (absolutely gorgeous for a trash show). But I don’t think it’s possible for any actors or characters to have chemistry when it’s written SO poorly. Honestly worst written series I can recall watching. I repeatedly paused to laugh and show people around me how absurd some scenes were.
I really hope the actors can land some interesting roles otherwise. Maybe some of them are poor actors, maybe they just need better material to develop with.
SaysUselessThings@reddit
Snyder's Superman - Henry Cavill and Amy Adams had zero fucking chemistry. They looked more like brother and sister than people interested in each other. Didn't help those films had the worst scripts around them either.

Oh, sexual chemistry. Well, my point stands, I think.

Meenakshi108@reddit
Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge
WillSym@reddit
In Time had a weird one: Justin Timberlake's lead didn't really have chemistry Amanda Seyfried. But he DID with other co-star Olivia Wilde.
Unfortunately Seyfried is playing the bad-guy daughter love interest, and Wilde, due to the premise where nobody ages beyond 25 and instead just dies when they run out of time on an implanted clock, is JT's mother...
boddle88@reddit
Love that film
sssupersssnake@reddit
Ah, the premise was also so interesting so much wasted potential for one movie...
Bulky-Wonga-8634@reddit
Tom Cruise with any female lead in the Mission Impossible films.
Altruistic_Hall9559@reddit
Yes! He had better chemistry with Benji (Simon Pegg) 😆
GlitchingGecko@reddit
Tom Cruise with any female.
Oppositely, he had great chemistry with Val Kilmer in Top Gun.
idekkanymoree_@reddit
No chemistry, Wentworth miller and Sarah Wayne Callies in prison break aka Michael and Sara, it felt so forced like I know Ww is gay but it still felt forced.
Great chemistry I’ve got to say Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey playing Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd in Grey’s anatomy, it felt so real!!
Supergingeboy@reddit
That’s a good one. Funnily enough Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller have terrific chemistry and I don’t have a hard time buying them as brothers.
Sarah-Jane-Smith@reddit
They were great together in Legends of Tomorrow as well.
DasSockenmonster@reddit
George Costanza and Susan Ross. Or to give them their proper names, Jason Alexander and Heidi Swedberg.
They both didn't get along because they both had different acting styles, they tried to make it work but ultimately couldn't. Heidi's acting style was too serious, ultimately making it a nightmare for both of them to bounce off each other in their scenes.
Most of the cast also didn't gel with Heidi either. So, they decided to kill her character off.
Oghamstoner@reddit
Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper in Mamma Mia, it felt like their scenes were shot separately and then edited to make it look like they were in the same location.
bright_sorbet1@reddit
I'm pretty sure they were actually dating in reali life during the filming 😅😂
North-Apartment3577@reddit
Any of the cast in the festive monstrosity 'The Holiday'. All likeable actors in their own right, but zero chemistry with each other imo.
TheRealRedPeggy@reddit
I agree with all of this.
Maleficent_Box_5111@reddit
Emma and Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time. No chemistry whatsoever.
LJCrowds@reddit
I think Snow and Prince Charming stole all the chemistry

Might have to rewatch this. I never actually finished it, I got bored after a few seasons. Thanks

Don't bother with the last season, it's a weird time skip thing and just not worth your time.

Jeff and Mateo in Superstore. The had one on screen kiss and it actually looked like if you asked two straight men to kiss. Ironically at least one of them is gay in real life.
Oohoureli@reddit
Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire in Funny Face. He looked all of the 30 years older than her that he was, and their romance was laughingly unbelievable.
Watchkeys@reddit
I didn't find it laughable, I found it gross. Same with Cary Grant in Charade. They had to write jokes into the script where he called her 'child' because they knew the audience would need the age gap to be acknowledged. It made it worse.
AromaticVacation3077@reddit
Also Judy Garland and Fred Astaire in Easter Parade.

Saul and Kim from Better Call Saul. They were like brother and sister. Did we ever see them even kiss? Was it somehow important to the plot or as part of showing their personality that they were portrayed that way?
Aben_Zin@reddit
Yeah. I kinda felt the same way about Cersei and Jamie in Game of Thrones
shindig7@reddit
Okay so I completely disagree! I thought their relationship was presented amazingly in Better call Saul. Yes they didn't have a lot of overly romantic or sexual scenes between them but it wasn't needed. I feel like it was one of the most realistic and relatable relationships portrayed in TV
Unlucky-Public-2947@reddit
:(
shindig7@reddit
Just because it wasn't shown on screen doesn't mean the characters didn't have sex, of course they did. Not every aspect of life has to be shown, I don't need to see characters eating and sleeping every day to know that they eat and sleep.
Britkraut@reddit
It was mostly when Jimmy was being bad that she leaned into it more
And yes, they even play the con where they are acting as bro and sis
It definitely felt more like they were exs hanging around though, so I get where you're coming from
But like others have said in the thread, it's probably one of the more realistic portrayals of the day to day of a real relationship
LittleSadRufus@reddit
I think it was intentional. It was a self destructive relationship on both sides, not anything particularly healthy.
dickiebow@reddit
Marilyn and John in home and away. I remember my wife having it on and they were just getting together. The actors had to kiss each other and you could tell she was physically repulsed by her coworker.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in The Tourist.
Wino3416@reddit
Oh my goodness, yes. They’re just not believable at all. She’s too prim. If they’d have had gone in 60 seconds Jolie it would have been more believable. And I’d have watched it more often.
Signal-Ad2674@reddit
Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in The Tourist should have been on screen fire, but barely managed to look interested..
Tight-Principle-743@reddit
Ned and Edna always seemed wrong together.
MagicCoat@reddit
I think they had potential to work, they just weren't explored in depth enough. They are VERY different characters, mostly united in their mutual tragic pasts with love. The only thing is they barely developed their chemistry when they got together. There was so much to build on that they either only dipped their toes into or didnt explore at all. Their differences in ideas of parenting are pretty much where it started and ended. Just off the top of my head I wouldve liked to have seen more about:
-Edna who is not shown to be religious dealing with Ned's extreme faith.
-The idea of Bart living next door to Edna with whom hes always had a complicated relationship.
-Ned being a widow who spent a long time with a loving wife in comparison, Edna has a bitter divorce and a messy fling with Skinner.
-Marge being a similar position of friendship/rivalry that she did with Maude, now with someone who knows her son very well, perhaps even better than her in some ways, and sometimes isnt exactly fond of him.
idk there was just a lot of untapped potential stories and dynamics

I’m enjoying watching ‘Younger’ on Netflix. But it’s supposed to be a love triangle. Sutton Foster who plays Liza, the main character, has amazing chemistry with Nico Tortorella who plays Josh, but sparks never really fly with Peter Herman, who plays Charles. I don’t know how much is the script and how much is the actors in producing the chemistry, I think Charles’ character is mostly a bit wooden.
peppermint_aero@reddit
Yeah he's mostly just Tall Boss Man.
Technical-Bedroom-84@reddit
There was a new fantastic 4 movie and the couple in that just felt like they had been cast by 2 different people and never had a single chemistry read. Ever.
Goldman250@reddit
It’s weird, because they had so much chemistry during the press tour, half the internet was convinced they were having an affair.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Agree and I it felt like the whole group hadn’t even known each other that long. It felt kinda fake.
Technical-Bedroom-84@reddit
Omg right?! Like I know it is make believe but they truly were just like "here are a bunch of actors, believe they're mates"

Jimmy and Kim from Better Call Saul. Felt like they were acquaintances at best most of the time.
Deadpooldan@reddit
A large part of the 'attraction' between them was their appetite for causing chaos, which is a major plot point in the whole show

Heh, I took too long writing my comment on my phone as you hadn't posted this when I started! It's almost as if in an early version of the writing they were siblings who didn't like their big brother!

Valerian and Laureline in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Dimac99@reddit
The anti-chemistry between the leads was quite something. I think if more people had seen it then this would be the top answer!
akl78@reddit
For most of the film I was wondering why they had cousins who didn’t even like each other on this mission
Dimac99@reddit
I remember them getting together at the end kind of annoyed me. I was very disappointed in Laureline. I don't care if he saved the universe or whatever, she deserved better than that absolute manchild! Mind you, I wish I could see it again in 3D, it was one of the few movies during the fad that didn't feel like the 3D was an afterthought.

Jimmy McGill / Saul Goodman and Kim Wexler. No sexual chemistry in my opinion
