Uber drivers of the UK, what makes you give out a 5* passenger rating? Do Uber eats customers get rated? If so, on what basis?
Posted by Chance-Bread-315@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 97 comments
I've got a 4.69 rating on uber and I just can't wrap my head around it because I think I'm pretty inoffensive as a passenger!
I'd assume you get downrated if you're rude to the driver or are playing loud distracting videos or drunkenly throwing up in the car and I've never done any of these things...
Flat_News_2000@reddit
I like that there are zero comments from uber drivers. Way to go guys
as_edgy_as_a_satsuma@reddit
I always thought the etiquette was five for five.
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
On eBay maybe, I never bother rating a taxi driver and I'm sure they don't check if I did or not
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
I've got 4.81. I never bother rating the drivers myself. I use Bolt more though as it's cheaper in most cases.
matteding@reddit
I’ve pre booked Uber for pet hours in advance, and several times the driver acts surprised that I had a dog. Pretty sure they rated me lower because they didn’t read the details properly before accepting the gig.
freerangetrousers@reddit
Apparently things like making them wait slightly too long , slamming the door and not tipping (this one isn't listed by Uber but other people have said ) all play a role
TapWaterDev@reddit
Why on earth are you tipping?
freerangetrousers@reddit
I just said? Because some drivers decide to mark you down if you don't? Did you not read the comment
TapWaterDev@reddit
So you're tipping because you're scared they'll mark you down? That's crazy
freerangetrousers@reddit
I was just listing reasons good passengers get marked down.
But also yeah I don't mind dropping a whole £2 every few months when I get an Uber so that the next time I ensure I'm actually picked up.
My rating used to be below 4.5 because a friend threw up in an Uber and it is ROUGH trying to get someone to pick you up
TapWaterDev@reddit
That's wild... you should pay the agreed price for the service you receive and not a penny more
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
The internet is so weird about tipping. I always tip if it's been a good ride! £1 extra isn't going to hurt my bottom line, but might bring them a little smile in an otherwise thankless job. Sometimes they're extra helpful or friendly or whatever.
TapWaterDev@reddit
By all means tip a little if they've gone above and beyond. I think what most of us are against is the gradual slide towards expecting people to tip for simply delivering the service that was paid for. We don't want to end up like America.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Again, makes it sound like a new thing. I'm approaching 40 and have witnessed my parents - both British - tip my whole life, therefore I do it too.
In almost every aspect, I concur!
iamnotarobotniks@reddit
I agree with you here. I usually don't tip myself but also don't take taxis out of convenience unless I really have to. But if the driver provides a good experience I will ad a couple of quid as a sign of appreciation.
Some comments suggesting that it's outlandish to tip at all is just bizarre. As someone who works in hospitality, I always say that tips are not expected but appreciated. I don't want or need american tipping culture but a reward for an exceptional experience is fair in my books.
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Yeah UK Reddit gets SO hot about this, going so far as to say it should be banned, etc. I suppose often you are shaped by your family. My family have always tipped cab drivers, hotel staff and in restaurants, etc - my dad tips his Barbour which is apparently common.
If you only read Reddit you'd think that nobody has ever tipped in the UK ever which is false.
fezzuk@reddit
They dont know if you have tipped untill after you have rated them, stop it.
TemporaryLucky3637@reddit
I’ve always tipped taxi drivers a quid or so even before uber. It’s one of the few services we do have a tipping culture around imo when it was cash only it was common to say keep change or tell them to round up the fare.
sloth_ers@reddit
They didnt say they tipped in that comment? They said it plays a part...
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
How are we closing doors without slamming?
CheaterMcCheat@reddit
Ain't no tips in the UK mate
SeniorMoonlight21@reddit
Plenty of people do tip in the UK, especially for things like taxis. Its just not expected or done to a large amount like the US.
DiamondMidgar@reddit
The issue with stuff like this is there’s quite bad consequences sometimes for anything that isn’t 5* but people don’t realise that at the time.
I had a similar thing with Airbnb when I used to rent out my spare room. Different cultures have different attitudes to what is the norm for reviews. Some people just never give 5/5 regardless but if you get a few that aren’t 5 you start slipping in the Airbnb search results.
I feel like uber is similar particularly given it’s worldwide. I have a few 1*s and I can’t think of anything I’ve done wrong except maybe when abroad in a non English speaking country? My average is still 4.6 but that seems to raise some eyebrows and not be high enough!
DragonfruitLeft825@reddit
A high 4.9x score can be better than a 5 - 5 often means a brand new account with no history, where 4.97 is going to be an account with lots of trips and mostly 5 ratings. Many drivers prefer to see that
No_Coyote2234@reddit
I was always on 100% and one day uber app showed my driver wrong place and he got frustrated and left me with 4.71 like it was my fault 🤷
neilm1000@reddit
I've had drivers turn up at the wrong place and then get annoyed that I take time walking to them.
OkSun8521@reddit
They often do this deliberately to try and get you to cancel the ride. Then they get the cancellation fee without having to actually drive you anywhere.
neilm1000@reddit
The annoying part for me is that I live close to the junction of a one way 'loop' so they wait at the top of the loop thinking I'll walk to them without realising (or caring, more likely) that it's much further than it looks on the map. They think it's easier.
zauchi@reddit
This happened to me once. The driver told me to cancel, but I said, 'I’d get charged, so it’s better if you cancel instead, since it’ll hook me up with another driver.' Then he just waited lol
mckjerral@reddit
Mine was over ten years ago and I still know which driver ruined my 5*, as far as I can tell it's because I suggested a route with less traffic on. Damn you Neville!
Glad-Feature-2117@reddit
Áb I bzSSs Bs
Sablun99@reddit
I really have no idea
My very boring accomplishment is having a 4.97 star rating on 99 trips. It was 5 for a long time, I wish I knew what brought it down.
Mr_Emile_heskey@reddit
I've been 4.97 for the longest time, then a mate of mine left her phone in the uber I'd ordered. Not even my fault and the fucker left me at 4.97, and years later I'm still there.
silent_pm@reddit
I was a solid 4.99 till I accidentally engaged in politics with a driver who had a differing view than me 😂 it's 4.59 now...
fezzuk@reddit
I got 4.64 and im 99% most of that is because i had to book my very very drunk friend a cab home one night remotely (she phone me up so drunk she didnt know where she was) and apparently she threw up and then just jumped out out the cab while it was moving, i dont know why.
But i think my account deserved 1* for that.
HumanCStand@reddit
You would have probably gotten a fine if they had thrown up in the cab
fezzuk@reddit
Idk i didnt and the only person who can tell me what happened obviously didnt really remeber what happened.
I was on the phone with her when she jumped out the cab and said the had been sick in it.
Go figure.
OkSun8521@reddit
She sounds like a knob.
fezzuk@reddit
No, a lovely very hars working person.
Just had a bit of a break down, can haooen to tbe best of us.
ResponsibilityNo3245@reddit
My son's rating is shit because he's sorted a couple of mate's out with rides and they puked. It's his own fault for not learning from the first one imo.
20dogs@reddit
Nah good for him looking out for his mates like that, sounds like a decent guy
KhaelonVoss@reddit
Could he just open a new account? Or would that be worse? Not an Uber user, so sorry for the daft question
ResponsibilityNo3245@reddit
Probably. Don't think it's causing him enough trouble to bother tbh.
Virtual_Opinion_8630@reddit
4.59 apparently
never drunk, never late
who cares lol
iamnotarobotniks@reddit
Same almost. I am on 4.58. Never drunk, never late. I will happily engage myself unless the driver initiates the conversation upon which I try to be friendly and engaging. I have 2 one star ratings which just aren't warranted at all. Some drivers some just chubby fingers or are dickheads for no reason.
thecheesycheeselover@reddit
Some drivers don’t take people below a certain score, sometimes even 4.8 (I used to lurk in the Uber drivers sub out of curiosity). That’s the only reason I care, I’m on 4.7-something and have had days where I’ve been matched and rejected over and over until I just gave up. Might not be why, but might be.
Like you, I’m never drunk, always waiting outside when they get there. Not rude, etc. But clearly I’ve pissed someone off…
blahblahblah1234_@reddit
What’s wrong with 4.8?
thecheesycheeselover@reddit
Some of the drivers think less than that is too low. I don’t understand it, because how can someone with 4.79 out of 5 really be a terrible customer, but there it is.
blahblahblah1234_@reddit
Huh, that’s interesting. I’d have thought they’d maybe have second thoughts if the customer had a rating of about 3 ish.
thecheesycheeselover@reddit
Me too!
shadowharv@reddit
I was at 5 stars for my first year, barely used it, only had about 5 trips. Then I got an Uber to get home from work when it was raining really heavily and the driver was annoyed with me because I was a little bit wet when I got in his car. He gave me a low rating after spending the entire journey ranting about how I shouldn't have booked an Uber if I was going to get in the car wet, I told him he should have rejected my trip when he saw it was raining. My rating went down to 3.5 that day. Slowly dragging it back up to 5, currently at 4.5
No_Coyote_557@reddit
I'm amazed that a business can have a ratings system for its customers. More amazed that people accept this. WTF, who's in charge of this relationship?
Wooden_Chain_1086@reddit
4.69 seems low, im at 4.89 and last i checked there was a single 1 star against me in close to 200 trips which is weird because I literally sit silently in the back, will happily converse if spoken to...
Chance-Bread-315@reddit (OP)
Didn't know I could see the data on my ratings. I've just found them and they're as follows:
Your rating is 4.69
1 star -11
2 stars - 5
3 stars - 10
4 stars - 16
5 stars - 265
Ten 3 star ratings is almost as mind boggling as eleven 1 stars!! I'm so intrigued I wish I could know what happened on those trips.
WhaleMeatFantasy@reddit
How do you access these?
DesignFar6251@reddit
Account - Settings - Privacy - See Summary - Ratings
Poo_Poo_La_Foo@reddit
Overall rating of 4.8 and have had an account for 4070 days, apparently! 😵💫
WhaleMeatFantasy@reddit
Thank you. Fascinating. I have 5 one star and 8 two star ratings. Never even had a cross word with a driver. Never eaten in a car let alone spilt something. Wonder what that’s all about.
Also had no idea I’d taken so many trips.
DesignFar6251@reddit
Yeah it's pretty surprising how many trips I've actually taken. The real eye opener was how many times I'd ordered Uber eats. Made me delete the app the first time I saw that

Kathwino@reddit
Hahaha I didn't know you could see this either 5 star - 105 4 stars - 5 3 stars - 2 2 stars - 0 1 star - 1
Wonder what I did to warrant my one and only 1 star! Definitely after a night out
Virtual_Opinion_8630@reddit
thanks!
I've got
11 1 star ratings 8 - 2 atar 18 - 3 star 14 - 4 star 235 - 5 star
now that I think about it - this was probably for times when I've been smashed
seeing as I've used the app for 11 years , the taxis turned up somewhere and it's hard to go get too a
or driver having a bad day
kindaadulting87@reddit
My score is 4.98 - have 63 five stars, and 1 four star.
That 4 star bothers me so much - I'm so close to perfection!!
miked999b@reddit
Same! 4.97 from 88. 86 five star and one one four, and one three.
Wondering what on earth I did to get a three 😅
shornscrot@reddit
I miss taxis
TemporaryLucky3637@reddit
I have 5 stars and only use it when I’m drinking tbh. I try not to leave them waiting and normally tip unless they do anything weird 😅
Did_OJ_Simpson_do_it@reddit
I was an Uber Eats driver and I can't remember being asked to rate customers.
SnakePitWN@reddit
I will add my 2p to this convo, I have 4.92 rating which I'm proud of. I was in Liverpool last year with two friends trying to get down to Everton's ground and they tried getting in the Uber with open beers so I confiscated them gave them too the driver then took them back when we got out. Ain't gonna tank my rating when I'm doing a favour!
ServerLost@reddit
Fell asleep once and I've been on 4.91 ever since. It bothers me more than it should 😂
Ceejayncl@reddit
I got a low rating once and I think it was because the fare was too low. This was back when Uber first came out in my city. I was a student who lived not all that far from university, about half a mile or so. I think it was either raining or I was running late, so I got an uber in and back then the journey’s started off at £3 and they had to go a certain distance to go over that. A lot of journeys then would only cost me £3 to uni or back, certainly no more than £4. I think one of the drivers wasn’t too happy that he had to come from basically where I wanted to go, and back in rush hour for £3.
Back then it was a little bit of problem because it set my average down for quite a bit, so it would often take a bit longer to get a ride sometimes. I started saying to the drivers that I’ll rate them 5* because back then they needed the rating as well, and now I still say it every time I get an Uber.
diegowesterberg@reddit
4.72, which given how often I've been coming back from a night out I think is pretty decent.
One thing I've noticed is that all my female friends have markedly lower ratings. I think a lot of uber drivers don't approve of women being intoxicated.
JamesMW1994@reddit
I had a perfect 5 star score for years, then I had an uber driver who drove down the wrong street then stopped on another incorrect street when picking me up, was adamant he was in the correct place. He also got annoyed when we got stuck in traffic. Ruined my perfect 5 star score through no fault of my own.
Bubbly_Power1170@reddit
I don’t use uber often but I have a 4.93 rating! 13 x 5 and 1 x 4 review
PetersMapProject@reddit
4.64 - 89 x 5, 8 x 4, 3 x 3, 0 x 2 and 6 x 1* apparently.
Which, given that I'm almost always quite drunk when I get an Uber, I'll accept.
Saiing@reddit
I was on like 4.98 until I went to Israel on business. Wow those drivers are cunts. One got upset with me because the official Uber pickup place required going through a checkpoint. It's not my fucking problem or my country mate.
liluniqueme@reddit
5* for me.
bossplw@reddit
When Uber first came to London I saw a driver give me 3 stars as he clearly didn't know how the app worked. Looks like he was just pressing anything to get the notification to go away.
carboncopy404@reddit
4.85. Always punctual, sometimes tipsy on the way home from a night out but never rude or obnoxious. I usually just sit quietly and make conversation if spoken to first.
I remember my rating being in the pits during uni as I was the organiser and my drunk friends would be loud and couple of times vomited. But even then it was like 4.5
willard_price@reddit
4.92 😇
I always tip at least $1 in local currency which I think helps.
HumanCStand@reddit
They charge you more for the fare if you have a lower rating- so I wouldn’t be surprised if doing this costs you less in the long run- not to mention having more drivers accept your fare
Bellatrixforqueen@reddit
Is this true in uk ?
HumanCStand@reddit
I was told this when in Australia so am assuming so here too.
ambiguousboner@reddit
This is absolutely not true lol
Me and my girlfriend often book them at the same time to see who gets confirmation first, almost exactly the same price and we have wildly different uber ratings
ambiguousboner@reddit
4.91 and I basically only get Ubers when I’m battered
I must be an incredibly charming drunk
bonzog@reddit
Just discovered this is even a thing. 4.85 apparently. I've only ever used it around airports and hotels. Try to be polite, waiting outside on time in the right place. Only had a couple of "bad" journeys and that's where the driver had no idea how to get into the airport dropoff, or was driving like an utter maniac. Curious to know wtf I got a 1* for!
5 - 58 4 - 0 3 - 1 2 - 1 1* - 1
ElvishMystical@reddit
I'm in London and have a 4.58 on Bolt. I'm usually silent, use the rear seatbelt, am careful getting in and out of the car, say thank you and always tip the driver (usually £5).
The only issue is that Bolt never gets my pick up address right but always defaults to an adjacent block, so each time I order a ride from home I have to manually input my home address once or twice, and even then, despite giving them the correct address with directions the driver still won't find me and I have to search for them halfway down the street.
I can only assume that the issue is the whole geotagging issue and confusion over my (home) pick up address. When I book a ride from anywhere else back home there's never any such issues over pick up.
HumanCStand@reddit
A uber driver explained that a big factor is time waiting to get in the cab.
They apparently judge your rating to see if you are even worth the fair, a slightly lower rating for a man or a woman could mean the passenger is more aggressive or argumentative etc.
Uber will compensate them for taking the lower rated fares by giving them slightly more money, I believe. Likewise, a lower rating will literally cost you more money as a passenger- next time you’re booking a cab with someone, see how the price is different based on your rating.
ZippyLondon@reddit
4.72 here. Always say please and thank you. Never slam doors or make drivers wait. Shit, I even call them sir.
magical_matey@reddit
I know someone who took their first uber ride, and their friend was sick in the car. They ended up with a 1* rating and no one wanted to pick them up after that
ShinHayato@reddit
Ouch that’s unlucky
Pip1710@reddit
I've got loads of 1 and 2 reviews. But I was always the one who sorted the taxis at uni.
Apparently taxi drivers that operate in student areas and decide to work during the going on a night out/coming home from a night out times don't like drunk students.
Offramp182@reddit
It depends entirely on the driver. As long as you don't throw up or leave rubbish in my car, you're pretty much guaranteed 5*. But I know some drivers actually have a running tally in their head through the entire trip
sleepyprojectionist@reddit
I have thrown up in an Uber and I’m on a 4.83. I can only assume that I must have a larger sample size of rides and it has evened out over time.
Apparently I have done 190 trips in 4309 days. So that’s just under 11 years and ten months, meaning that I have averaged roughly 1.34 rides a month for nearly twelve years.
ImDankest@reddit
If I'm getting an uber somewhere is because I'm too intoxicated to drive, usually after a couple drinks or a smoke. I can imagine my score is 4.5 because I likely smell of weed sometimes. Is what it is, don't let it bother you.
Although sometimes I imagine I get a low rating because I don't want to converse with an overly chatty uber driver for 20+ minutes when I'm stoned out my mind and I feel like they sometimes take offense when I don't want to talk to them
Kathwino@reddit
Not a driver myself but I chatted to a friendly one once who said some drivers will do stuff like knock off a star if you're not literally waiting by the curb when the car arrives. So you probably haven't done anything wrong.
