50 years ago today, the last day of school for the students of Lee High School. If this movie came out today it would take place in 2009.

"Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you're being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes."
LeopardDue1112@reddit
"The '68 Democratic Convention was probably the most bitchin' time I've ever had in my life"
Traditional_Cat_60@reddit
Wasn’t that the one where RFK was killed? That’s ducked up
LeopardDue1112@reddit
RFK was assassinated just a few months before. The '68 Democratic Convention is infamous because of the violent clashes between anti-war protestors and Chicago police.
Traditional_Cat_60@reddit
Thanks for the info. I always thought it was at the DNC. 1968 was a terrible year for America all around.
Timsterfield@reddit
We all had that one washed up boomer hippie teacher that liked to talk a lot like the one in the movie....
Hot-Gift-3318@reddit
LeModderD@reddit
Slater was always my favorite character.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
I love the "oooohhkay" thing he does after that
Woodworkingwino@reddit
IceCreamVariety@reddit
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time!
Quirky0ne@reddit
I 100% agree. I can watch it over and over again.
JasJoeGo@reddit
We did watch it over and over again!!
Raebelle1981@reddit
Same.
heavyLevy5@reddit
FYI, Mitch touches his nose 42 times in this movie, just in case you were wondering
YT-Deliveries@reddit
Fairycharmd@reddit
M husband and I named that pitcher Dazed when we first saw him pitching. I don’t remember his real name anymore just that he’s Dazed. (Shows how much baseball I watch these days)
YT-Deliveries@reddit
Haha, same.
Obi_Wan_Benobi@reddit
Big Time Timmy Jim
KennyL0gin@reddit
Still my favorite pitcher ever. And I grew up as a Braves fan in the 90s. But Lincecum was some kind of fun, chill, unreal levels of good when he was at his peak.
Zestyclose-Beyond780@reddit
I witnessed one of his 14K games in 2011 and it was unbelievable. I had never been so excited for The Giants to be on defense. He was just out of this world to watch. #LetTimmySmoke
aliie_627@reddit
I remember the the first game of 2011(?) and he gave up 3 home runs right out the gate. That was a sad day in hindsight and the beginning of the end for him. I read though that he didn't do a lot of the usual pitcher stuff like stretching and icing down after games. There was a lot of speculation his pitching style would wear him down early.
tlivingd@reddit
That’s a lot of drinks
Ill-Complaint-6634@reddit
And also puts his hair behind his ears constantly
username__0000@reddit
We tried making it a drinking game, but it got to be too much.
We also tried a “we’ll smoke a joint when they do” with half baked. But we ran out of weed. lol
RalphWaldoEmers0n@reddit
Right by the beach! Boyyy!
SIMPSONBORT@reddit
We used to play a game when we’d watch. We’d either hit bongs or drink shots of beer every time he touched his nose. lol.
mydeadface@reddit
Take a drink every time he touches his nose.
Hossflex@reddit
Used to be a drinking game back in college. Man did we get drunk off of this movie.
Johnykbr@reddit
Ugh. I was a nose bridge pincher growing up. Once it got pointed out I had to work that out of my system.
Noisechild@reddit
Does this include squinting his eyes, shaking his head, and scoffing?
LineImpossible3958@reddit
He was always my least favorite character in the movie. Just a bland bland character
RockItGuyDC@reddit
The character being bland was fine, the kid was just a shit actor.
Asleep_Onion@reddit
Same, but also it kind of works. Seems like the point of his character is he's just supposed to be an average boring, kind of naive, easily influenced kid.
Dan_Berg@reddit
I wasn't, but now that you mention it
TheUnknownStuntman51@reddit
Yeah, the drinking game with this was brutal
not-a-creep-69420@reddit
I’ve always want to count these, too!
peekaboooobakeep@reddit
I actually was wondering and never had the focus to count for myself. Also this movie was our "final exam" for astronomy. Mr. S was the greatest science teacher ever.
Tight_Cheetah_4474@reddit
I watched it this past Saturday with my dad, who graduated in '78 and had a very similar experience in his North TX high school. This is one of his favorite movies. We were definitely high.
cmgww@reddit
Damn it I tried to post this late yesterday and god it auto removed twice….similar title. Oh well. I watched this movie every year today, this year my sixth grader saw it for the first time. He’s pretty mature for his age so I didn’t think there was any harm in it. It’s still a great, fun movie…. And he’s obsessed with classic cars like those in the film, that’s what he wants for his first vehicle when he gets his license. Lol. Those aren’t exactly cheap if you want one that looks good… plus the safety was abysmal compared to now

School’s out for summer
TheAskewOne@reddit
School’s out forever!
ouijahead@reddit
Today is my kids last day of school. Man I miss that feeling.
Inestimable_Me@reddit
If you could bottle that “Last Day of School” feeling in the 80s and 90s….
Asleep_Onion@reddit
My kid, too. But he's not nearly as excited about it as I remember being.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
I think it has a lot to do with the general state of the world at the moment.
When we were in high school and graduating, we thought there was a world of possibilities ahead of us and the world was our oyster
Kids these days know
Asleep_Onion@reddit
Well my kid is only on summer break after his sophomore year so he's got a couple years still before the world gives him an atomic wedgie.
I think honestly it's because school is easier for kids now, or at least it certainly seems to be for him, so getting a break from school doesn't really feel like that big of a deal to him.
Skitzafranik@reddit
Same! They grow up so fast!! 🥲
mickeltee@reddit
I don’t know if you saw the post about this game a couple days ago, but School’s Out for Summer was one of the songs today, and I used the year this movie was set in to get close to the year.
zenprime-morpheus@reddit
I remember how our local radio stations would keep the song in rotation for the end of the school year, so you'd absolutely hear it that last week, if not the actual last day of school, just keeping the HYPE at critical levels so we were ready to explode.
absentlyric@reddit
My school used to play that song on the PA on our last days of school in the 90s, it was awesome.
CreativeFedora@reddit
216news@reddit
Would be a lot cooler if you did!
noonesaidityet@reddit
Anytime I see a post that says "This would have taken place in" and the number starts with 20, there is an involuntary voice in my head that yells FFFUUUUUCCCKKKKKING HELL.
Acrobatic_Border_192@reddit
It wasn't that far away when it came out, really. When it was released, it seemed further away because a lot of the intended audience would have been very young or not even born during the setting.
noonesaidityet@reddit
I had a conversation with my father-in-law about the moon landing and how far we've come technologically since then, and then he dropped "It only happened 12 years before you were born" on my lap and it took me a while for that to register correctly in my head.
SweetPrism@reddit
I turn 45 in August. I was just thinking about scheduling my colonoscopy, but I don't have to now because I just shit myself reading that.
jasonreid1976@reddit
You still need it. You just have less prep to worry about.
Acrobatic_Border_192@reddit
I remember an Internet comic from 2010 that said that now we were further away from the release of the Little Mermaid movie than the release of the Little Mermaid was from the moon landing. And that was 15 years ago!
Dazed and Confused was set 5 years before I was born. More time elapsed between when I started school and the release of the movie than 76 and my birth, but it seemed impossibly far away at the time. In between when I started going out with my now ex-wife and our separation was about 19 years, and that's still longer than the setting/release gap of the movie.
I think in the 90s, it was still possible to feel nostalgic in a way you really can't today. The internet has kept people in touch, fandoms intact, and old media available that the past never quite goes away. A nostalgia movie set in 2009 seems almost silly now. You'd just as well watch a movie from 2009.
rjd014@reddit
GainHealMark@reddit
From the movie Dazed and Confused for those who are wondering.
Shejidan@reddit
Hero. I’ve never actually seen it.
Acrobatic_Border_192@reddit
It's an ok movie but the older I get, the more I dislike boomer self-mythologizing. There's a very cheesey subplot about a football player who refuses to give up weed, which is sort of emblematic of lunkheaded faux-rebelliousness, but it's presented in the movie like he's taking some brave and principled stand like he's Rosa Parks or something. It's not bad but it's mostly geared towards teenagers who think partying and drugs automatically make you cool and interesting. And that's despite one of the main characters being shown to be superficially cool but also sort of loser who never grew up. Aside from romanticizing drinking beer and smoking weed as the best and funnest things you can possibly do, it has too many characters and doesn't really develop the more interesting ones. Otherwise, it's perfectly acceptable as light hearted viewing material.

2009 would probably feel ancient to kids today, since it was the last year before everyone started walking around with the internet in their pocket.
PopularSet4776@reddit
I have 3 kids born '13, '14, and '16
Way I figure it, they look at the '10's like we looked at the 80's the 2 thousands like we looked at the 70's, the '90's how we looked at the '60's and the 80's like we looked at the 50's.
Doggin@reddit
Oh... Oh no. That one hurts.
lemoraromel@reddit
I was 12 when this movie came out and this movie was a big deal to me. The mid-70s was very long ago to compared to the mid-90s but I think part of that is how accessible media and general information was at the time compared to now.
A 12 year old can look up anything if they want and plenty of movies and tv are still popular from that time so I don’t think it’s exactly the same.
absentlyric@reddit
2009 was also the last year the internet was probably at it's peak in terms of being a fun and informative tool. It was all downhill from there.
Indubitalist@reddit
That’s about when the personal information vacuum was turned on and everything we did online became a revenue stream.
josephsleftbigtoe@reddit
2009 still feels like the current year to me. Before that, every year felt discrete and distinct, and years took their time, and had their own personalities and feel. Since then, though, everything has felt the same.
ouijahead@reddit
True true . I guess 2009 is the good days to those kids too.

_shaftpunk@reddit
The movie came out in the early 90s so it’s def part of xennial culture.
Butterscotch_Snatch@reddit
84 kid here, I didn’t really “get” this movie until I watched it in my late 20s… It felt like it was for Gen X. Nothing about my high school years looked or felt like this.
_shaftpunk@reddit
I mean, I’m not a heroin addict but I still loved Trainspotting.
Silent_Syren@reddit
Not necessarily, but the movie came out in 1993 which is smack dab in the middle of the xennials' childhood.

Man that’s means Pink, Melvin, Don, Benny etc would be between 67-68 years old now. O’Bannion would be like 71-72 since he’s a dumb shit.
