Is this legit?

Got a notice on my door today. Didn't include my address on the envelope, just my name written in blue pen. Is it a scam, or should I call the numbers?
AdaTHADwagon960@reddit
Yes 100% legit. Check with a doctor
Accomplished_Gas5670@reddit
Those two numbers are most likely Google Voice numbers or something like that. It is NOT a cell phone number. ... I cant tell you how I know.. but I know...... I would call a number that you can verify for Dallas County Health and Human services. If this is legitimate then Dallas County can verify
ExitTheHandbasket@reddit
The work number is, in fact, Dallas Health and Human Services.
My guess: someone tested positive for something, and listed you as a recent close contact.
Call the number.
Keystonelonestar@reddit
They couldn’t manage to track COVID when only a few folk had it, but they think they can track STDs. LOL!
acar3883@reddit
STDs, specifically HIV and syphilis, are reportable infections. If you test positive for either, your local health department is notified. If they have proper funding, that triggers Disease Intervention Specialists to reach out to any partners disclosed by the person who tested positive to link those people to testing and treatment if needed. It’s a very important aspect of public health, and it works well in certain scenarios.
Keystonelonestar@reddit
That was the theory in Epidemiology 101. Then we all saw how it didn’t work. Why do they still pretend that it does?
acar3883@reddit
Because COVID is different from STIs. You should’ve learned that in Epi 101.
Keystonelonestar@reddit
All diseases are different. The method used to study their transmission - epidemiology - are the same.
acar3883@reddit
It’s easier to remember who you’ve slept with than who you’ve shared an airspace with. Contract tracing works well, like I said before, “in certain scenarios”. Get it?
Keystonelonestar@reddit
That is all totally dependent on the individual. Get it?
acar3883@reddit
Exactly. Contact tracing works in spite of poor historians and generally stupid people.
What’s your point? That we shouldn’t do contact tracing? See how well that turns out.
Keystonelonestar@reddit
Because it doesn’t work.
acar3883@reddit

Keystonelonestar@reddit

acar3883@reddit
Words aren’t a source. Peer reviewed journal article, perhaps?
Keystonelonestar@reddit
You’re right. Real life experience isn’t a source.
acar3883@reddit
Correct, now you’re getting it.
“Real life experience” = I’ve never worked in public health but I experienced a pandemic.
Neat, guess we’re all experts.
Do you hear yourself? I’m talking to a wall.
Keystonelonestar@reddit
But I did work in public heath for 34 years…

Hey, I forget but was it Ebola that caused all the ruckus a few years back with a Dallas nurse who had and was quarantineed at home with police outside ensuring dhe didnt leave?
DataGOGO@reddit
My wife worked in that ICU.
No, that isn't what happened. Neither of the nurses were ever quarantined at home or guarded by police, they were in the ICU (that they worked at), everyone that took care of the guy voluntarily stayed in hospital and did not go home and slept in empty rooms on the same floor.
The hospital police guarded the floor itself to keep people off the floor, they were not guarding people to make sure they didn't leave, they mainly were trying to stop all the "journalists" that keep trying to get in and take pictures.
Two nurses did in fact contract Ebola.
ItsMinnieYall@reddit
The police did guard the nurse’s apartment. I lived in the village at the time and they evacuated the whole building she lived in.
DataGOGO@reddit
Yes, but she was not in it, she was in the hospital, the police were there to keep people out, not keep her in.
PS. They also completely stripped her unit, and burned all her stuff. Everything. She didn't even have a pair of underwear when she got out of the hospital. When she was going to meet Obama, the other nurses had to go buy her clothes so she had something to wear.
Local_Counter6275@reddit
My mom worked the floor during Ebola shit was crazy
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
I was on the leadership team at Baylor. That was the craziest thing I’d been through, until COVID, which was much worse.
Local_Counter6275@reddit
That’s insane
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
The prep was very similar, but COVID we actually had patients. Thousands of patients, and we started each day with a death count. I lost three of my friends/co-workers. So many amputations, cranis, and ECMO insertions. It was gruesome, like something out of a horror film.
PaulDallas72@reddit
I am most certainly going to regret this but anyway, when you mention amputations vis-a-vis COVID - how so? I did not know that was a complication. Certainly know all the others and had them one time or another but nothing permanent or as serious as amputation.
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
COVID caused severe clotting, restricting blood flow to the extremities, causing necrosis and gangrene.
DataGOGO@reddit
How quickly everyone has forgotten
seekingamber@reddit
I remember they were even going to euthanize her poor dog, it I think they just quarantined it thankfully. I think that would have been the most devastating part of all of it!
DataGOGO@reddit
Yeah, i remember that as well. Bentley is a cool little dude.
MiloMM123@reddit
I met her and her dog at a dog park and she was so kind!
TheDakestTimeline@reddit
Her sweet dog got it too
CatteNappe@reddit
No, he did not. He was exposed, but it was unknown initially if he had actually contracted it. After monitoring they determined he hadn't.
worstpartyever@reddit
There were two Ebola cases that year: one was the original patient who died, the second was the nurse that treated him before they knew it was Ebola.
Don’t forget about the spokesman for Texas Health who lied about both of them.
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
That’s not accurate
DataGOGO@reddit
This is incorrect, that was my wife's ICU (Med ICU 3) at Presby Dallas. There were 3 cases, the original case, and two nurses in the ICU. They knew it was Ebola the entire time, it was never a question. Both nurses that got Ebola did so while he was in the ICU.
The Nurse most people know is Nina, she was very young at the time (mid-20's) she got the most ill and almost died. Texas Health did not lie, what they got in trouble for was they released images and video's of Nina while she was being treated for Ebola without her consent. Nina sued, and won.

Soggy-Bedroom-3673@reddit
I think so. I don't remember all the details on police guarding her, but yeah there was a dude who had just traveled here from Africa and had contracted ebola, and he was treated at Presbyterian hospital. Two of the nurses contracted it and the first one was treated in isolation at Presby.

jimhatesyou@reddit
Hantavirus
Sideview_play@reddit
I will add always check these numbers are official before just calling a number like this. But if they are the official numbers then call it (but not the cell one in case that wasn't listed as official).
tbear87@reddit
State employees that interact with the public do often have work cell phones. These can sometimes be verified by googling the number if the person is on an agency contacts page, but the numbers also cycle with turnover so it's not always 100%. I'd say for something like this if you can verify the first number, the cell should be fine also if nobody answers the verified one.
Sideview_play@reddit
I specified if you couldn't validate it. I would never call any number you couldn't. If you can Google and find it then that would be validating.
Simple-Department-82@reddit
I don’t understand, what does it hurt to call?
tbear87@reddit
I'm aware. I was adding on to say that if you can't verify the cell number but you can verify the first number, it doesn't mean it's a scam. If you can verify one, the cell is probably legit regardless because the state cycles numbers with ATT/FirstNet as people are brought on or leave the agency.
Sideview_play@reddit
And I'm saying you can't assume the 2nd is legit just because the first is official. That would be an easy way to scam someone.
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
They left it on his front door. It’s pretty safe to assume it’s legit.
Sideview_play@reddit
God I hope that's sarcasm
West-Rhubarb-591@reddit
Good i hope this is sarcasm.
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
Not at all. Scammers who do phone scams call thousands of numbers. They don’t go to people’s homes and leave them notes. They already have his full name and address. This is something HHS does when contact tracing. It’s legit.
tbear87@reddit
Right? People out here acting like it's a phishing link, as though calling the number will hack you.
Call. If it is legit great. If they start asking for a bunch of your info hang up.
Right_Shape_8179@reddit
Exactly. Calling a scammer just lets them know it’s an active line. As long as you don’t do/say anything else, you’ll just start receiving a bunch of scam texts with links. *never say the word “yes.” I will say “affirmative” or “correct”

jmstanley88@reddit
You touched genitals with someone that has a disease. They put you down as a recent genital toucher. They're letting you know you need to have your genitals checked.
caffpanda@reddit
Looks like a scam, but any time you have something like this that doesn't pass the smell test, just call the agency directly and ask. This works for a lot of scams, like when people impersonate police on the phone you can tell them you'll call their station and get routed that way.
DrunkenDude123@reddit
Especially with banks. If you get a call from your bank, it’s not your bank. Just hang up and call their actual support number yourself to confirm no actions are needed.
FantasticForce6895@reddit
Yes, this! Google the agency’s number and use that number to call. Especially if someone calls and leaves a voicemail alleging to be an agency. Scammers can spoof the number, so always best to dial it in yourself than hit the “call back” functionality from your missed call log.
Whitey138@reddit
Google now prioritizes AI responses which means it’s no longer a reliable source for anything like this.
Sideview_play@reddit

spacedman_spiff@reddit
And yet it shares the first 8 digits of many of the numbers. Have you considered that individual employees have desk phones with numbers that aren't publicly available?
DanaMarie75038@reddit
What’s wrong with calling the number posted on their site first to confirm if it’s legit. Number can be spoofed
spacedman_spiff@reddit

Same with credit cards or whatever if they call you. Just say “thanks for the info/heads up, for my own comfort I’ll connect back with you by calling the direct numbers I have listed.” You can always tell if you even need to call the real thing because the scammer will do everything they can to keep you there and the legit person will just say “no problem my name is Joe and my extension is 123, talk to you soon.”
Glad-Salamander6801@reddit
Impressive they went to these lengths to contact you…
HongKongIgnacio@reddit
Strange but believable they would contact you in such a way. My BK manager contracted Hepatitis. We all had to go in for shots, it was kept confidential like some secret. Then she died, & everyone knew. That was around '82. With health risks, they must discreetly contact those on their list.
j_husk@reddit

scoop_winters@reddit
Legit. Got one of these for TB exposure at UTSW. Had to get a skin test. It was positive. The county managed my treatment and gave me a card saying I completed treatment but would need chest x-rays in the future.
Automatic_Trade@reddit
Both are legit phone numbers, the first to a specific counselor, the second to a supervisor. Whether the notice itself is legit or a prank is a different story. Surprising, if they would leave something of that degree of importance just hanging outside your door.

Agreed with a lot of these comments. I worked at an STI testing clinic and we have to report ALL positives to Texas health and human services. Different STDs impact people differently and also depends on how long they have had it as well.

Well, the area code and first three numbers are in keeping with the rest of the DCHHS numbers.
And doing some Google-Fu researching, it looks like it is linked to the Sexual Health Clinic, according to the National Prevention Information Network.
Not to be a downer, but you may have been exposed to someone with an STD, and you need to go get tested, treated, and/or take PReP.
Or someone is playing a really shitty prank on you, OP.
I'd call and see what's up. Just don't give any personal information, like SS#, DL#, credit card number.

Minor note - in this instance it would be PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis). PrEP is before you get exposed.
Everything else - yes. OP, please call back and follow through with testing/treatment if necessary. Also, for HIV, PEP is only effective if you start within 72 hours of exposure. So, fingers crossed it’s just chlamydia or something.
sarahkazz@reddit
Also, the AHF clinic that runs out of the back of Out of the Closet on Cedar Springs can help you get PEP in an affordable way if that is the issue and you're within the 72 hours. They helped me after I got assaulted when Methodist hospital did fuck all. Love those guys.

A-Rusty-Cow@reddit
Good luck OP
Drarmament@reddit
My buddy got one of those. He found out he got the clap.
snowiehair@reddit
Did he know who gave it to him? Did the person who gave it to him reach out or did he only ever hear from the health department?
Drarmament@reddit
The clinic told him.
BillDuki@reddit
Sounds like you may have the HerpeSyphaHIVRhea!
kgvc7@reddit
OP now has Ebola or hantavirus for sure. Or both.
noncongruent@reddit
Or worse, hantabolapox virus.
gregwlsn@reddit
My favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers album
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
2014 was a wild year, huh. Three cases of ebola. Poor guy got his apartment destroyed 🙁
invester13@reddit
Turn off NPR.
datdouche@reddit
You looked at Japanese NSFW comics. You now have hentai-virus.
DanaMarie75038@reddit
These are the number. Call these instead https://www.dallascounty.org/departments/dchhs/contact-us/
good_girl_spankee@reddit
Go get your antibiotics. And wrap it up next time, lol.
Texas22@reddit
Let us know what you contracted
creepingkg@reddit
You got the herps. /s
Sounds like someone got tested and they got positive. So they get the information of the people they’ve been around to warn them
aDelveysAnkleMonitor@reddit
You either have herpes or bird flu
MoulinSarah@reddit
EBOLA!!!!
HANTAVIRUS!!!
jmanbam@reddit
Yup! It’s legit. And if you don’t follow up they will call you….
Informal_Guitar_2649@reddit
We got something similar. Called the main line and they were no help. Long story short it was fine, but keep ppressing for clear indicators of legitimacy.
renothedog@reddit
Yup. You were exposed to something or in physical/intimate contact with someone who has been tracked by health department.
Good luck!
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I’m sorry that you have ebola 🙁
/s
Scared_Rock5029@reddit
Yup. Someone has an std and put you down as a possible sexual partner. Just go in and get tested. Better safe than sorry! Good luck!
Economy-Rent5200@reddit
Definitely scam - real county health department wouldn't leave handwritten notes at your door with cell phone numbers
jamesdukeiv@reddit
No, they absolutely do if you don’t respond to their calls first. They show up at your door and leave these notes if they can’t get ahold of you there either.
Traditional_Pie_2285@reddit
False
UnusualInspector4385@reddit
Possible STD exposure - I’d call as soon as possible
t3ddt3ch@reddit
Probably a scam. If it's related to something as important as your health they aren't going to leave a note on your door. Also, they should be identifying themselves with more than just a telephone number.
RepulsiveInterview44@reddit
They absolutely will do this for contact tracing purposes. If no one’s at home, this is the quickest, easiest way to reach out to multiple people.
Traditional_Pie_2285@reddit
False
dallaaaas@reddit
The person who was treated at the health department likely received this notice to give to whomever they had sexual contact with.
RepulsiveInterview44@reddit
Yep, most likely contact tracing for some communicable disease.
GrandRefrigerator263@reddit
Yeah it’s probably legit. Someone probably has a legal obligation to inform you of contact tracing.
maverickps1@reddit
looks like it might be the Dallas health clinic number. Maybe a previous partner tested positive for something that requires notifying their partners.
Make any new friends recently?
tuliprox@reddit
STD exposure most likely
Accomplished_One3985@reddit
You can just call Dallas Health and uman Services main line and ask.
Coincidentally thereain number is 214-819-2000
iranoutofspacehere@reddit
I would call the HHS main line on their website and talk to them, they should be able to verify the numbers and pass you along to the right people, if it's legit.
https://www.dallascounty.org/departments/dchhs/contact-us/
Fwiw, the landline is probably an HHS number. Maybe they found a rabid animal or something nearby and left a note for all the neighbors?
pauliep13@reddit
Google the main number for Dallas county HHS. Call and ask if that person is real, and if that's the correct number for them. They should be able to confirm for you.
endless_shrimp@reddit
It is legit.
leostotch@reddit
I’d look up the phone number for this department online and call that.
