A new H-E-B just opened in my town! What are your best recommendations to buy from there??

What's HEB?
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
A Texan supermarket chain that people rave about. I'm from the UK and now live in Texas, via California, so I'm keen to find out what's so great about it
Luchofromvenezuela@reddit
Creamy Creations, Grasshopper flavor (Texas Starry Night being a close second)
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Grasshopper flavor has definitely piqued my curiosity!
gofindyour@reddit
Their guacamole is so good, terlingua chili mix (maybe not at this point in the year, wait a few monthsđ« ), tortillas... after leaving texas for 7 years im so blessed to be able to go to heb again! Also white chocolate strawberry cake from the bakery.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
The cake sounds so good!
khirata215@reddit
Tortillas
Main_Insect_3144@reddit
They use GMO corn for their chips, though. Sigh.
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
Yes, because that's how you make things out of corn.
Main_Insect_3144@reddit
It shouldn't be. I don't want to eat glyphosate and H.E.B. should want to do better for their customers.
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
The world would starve without GMO.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
These seem to be very popular
Hollowbody57@reddit
They're very, very good. Just be aware since they're made fresh without any preservatives they don't have a very long shelf life like some other brands do, so plan on using them as soon as possible. They're better the same day they're made, anyway.
Just-Finish5767@reddit
We keep them on the counter for 2 days, then make sure they're nicely separated (esp if there's no plastic between them) and they can go in the fridge. Just heat them in a dry skillet before eating.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I'm 5 months pregnant, so nothing has a very long shelf life around me right now đ
cmcglinchy@reddit
Hmm, Iâve never heard of it.
nowhereman136@reddit
It's a chain of grocery stores in Texas. Not a bad store but not really that special
gofindyour@reddit
It is really that special after living in places where walmart or plublix is your only option
chinchaaa@reddit
Itâs beloved in Texas. It is special. Sorry itâs not up to the level of stop and shop.
Emotional-Loss-9852@reddit
Itâs like Publix but a lot better
zone_of-danger@reddit
Publix bakery is so much better
TruthfulRepugnance@reddit
Publix is good (albeit expensive), but for different things
ITrCool@reddit
HY-VEE is that for us up here in OK/MO/AR/KS territory.

Whataburger condiments. Spicy ketchup is my favorite. Patty melt sauce is a close second for me. Their mustard is great too.
ThroatFun478@reddit
And I have trouble finding chile piquin, which is awesome on, like, everything, but they just sell bags of dried ones in the produce section at heb.
9inez@reddit
You should simply go and investigate and experiment with the HEB branded stuff. Itâll be fun. Bakery items are the area where there is a lot of variety.
riarws@reddit
Ketchup
WafflePeak@reddit
A what?
weaverlorelei@reddit
I second, third and fourth fresh Tortillas, and see if you can find the "Southwest" flavor ones. So good with breakfast burritos
Historical-Gain-1688@reddit
I have shopped at Big Y, Stop and Shop, Wegmans, Rouses, Publix, Winn Dixie, Aldiâs, Randallâs. Nothing is better than MY HEB. Hands down the grocery store.
joeatonlv@reddit

Creamy Creation Columbian Coffee Toffee is some phenomenal ice cream if you're a coffee person.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Ohhhh Creamy Creations is ice cream? Someone else mentioned it too
Temporary_Nail_6468@reddit
FYI. They have their own ice cream manufacturing so they control the quality.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
OH MY GOD
Temporary_Nail_6468@reddit
They wonât give a date for the Irving opening even though the Midcities store opened last week and they did the hiring fairs at the same time! đ«
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
That's annoying!
Vegetable-Star-5833@reddit
What is HEB
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
It's a Texan grocery store that people here rave about
EgbertSouse2@reddit
Euless? Every time I drive past it, the parking lot is jammed full.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Yeah! I haven't even tried going yet...
WowsrsBowsrsTrousrs@reddit
Borracho beans. I love their house brand canned borracho beans. About once a year I go ahead and order a case of 6 cans shipped to me. It's worth it. I wouldn't move back to Texas just for that, but it's one of the few things I miss. (Mostly I hated most of Texas all 25 years I lived there. Yes, Austin is the best place in Texas, but that's a low bar because most of Texas sucks so badly.)
BioDriver@reddit
One of the few things I miss about Texas is HEBâs fresh-made tortillas.
lifeofGuacmole@reddit
Holiday pies. Better than I can make
pdqueer@reddit
Yes, they have a surprisingly good bakery for a grocery store. I'm new to Texas, so HEB was totally new. For the most part I've found that their store brand products are usually good, and much cheaper than national brands.
Downtow8775@reddit
I love H-E-B's butter tortillasđ
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
This is the second vote I've heard for the tortillas!
navair42@reddit
This is the most correct answer. I lived in Texas for only six months, twenty years ago and that's maybe the thing I miss the most about the only thing I miss about Texas.
Formal_Ground6513@reddit
I miss them so much! đą I still talk about the meal deals too!
ITrCool@reddit
Never heard of them. Local/regional chain?
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Yes, Texan!
ITrCool@reddit
Ah ok. đđ»
I ought to ask my brother-in-law about them. They live down in Dallas.
HY-VEE is our popular regional chain up this way.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I'm about 30 minutes from Dallas!
Standard_Mongoose_35@reddit
Iâm about 60 minutes from Dallas and excited about getting one in Sherman (one town over from me).
ITrCool@reddit
Itâs a cool city! Weâve visited them a couple times after they moved down there. Lots to experience there and it shows just how wealthy and big Texas is. Everything is huge down there.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
We're in the mid-cities and just moved a few months ago so I haven't explored much of Dallas yet, I've mostly been to Fort Worth. Will definitely check it out though!
DOMSdeluise@reddit
I like their prepared meals. But also it's just a grocery store at the end of the day, I wouldn't go out of my way if there was a Kroger or whatever closer to me.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
The Walmart is opposite and I do not love Walmart so it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other which one I go to.
DOMSdeluise@reddit
In that case HEB for sure lol
Zepbound-and-down@reddit
Pumpkin empanadas from the bakery section.
I like to put one in the air fryer to get it warm and a bit crisp around the edges. I have also been known to add fresh cold butter in between those crispy outer edges. đ
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Oh Lord....
PlayfulOtterFriend@reddit
Creamy Creations Rocky Road ice cream. It has become a must have in our house.
Butter tortillas literally every time you go. Eat a few before you get home. They are amazing while still hot and fresh.
If you like trail mix, they have lots of varieties.
A personal fave of mine are the jalapeño cheddar cheese balls in the chips aisle.
Just-Finish5767@reddit
As a companion to the fresh tortillas, the Mi Tienda fajitas. We get a big pack of the thighs or breasts almost weekly. Grill the whole pack, have as fajitas the first night, on a Caesar salad the second, and whatever is left goes in a pasta dish the third. The beef fajitas are also excellent, just make sure to get the Mi Tienda, not the HCF.
rage1026@reddit
Chips are good alternative from the name brand. They even do some unique limited flavors every few months. Citrus Cayenne, Caesar Dressing and Black Pepper Ketchup are the current ones out.
Gavacho123@reddit
Groceries
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Haha, yes I gathered groceries but are there any specific ones that are good? Someone told me they make great tortillas?
TruthfulRepugnance@reddit
I'm on otr trucker and always try to stop in at HEB when I'm in Texas. The fresh tortillas are good. There's a lot of Texas made stuff at HEB. The Culinary Cowgirls Queso (in the dairy section) is fire - always get a couple to take home to Oregon. One thing about HEB is that they tailor their products to the local market - what you find in, say Laredo, is different to what you'll get in Waco or somewhere.
BioDriver@reddit
Funny you mention Waco - thats where HEB does all their product and store design testing and feedback. I used to work for HEB corporate and analyzing that feedback was one of my job duties
TruthfulRepugnance@reddit
Just popped into my head as I've been to the DC there.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Good to know, thank you! Safe trucking!
cans-of-swine@reddit
For those not aware, we have a term 'groceries.' It's an old term but it means basically what you're buying, food, it's a pretty accurate term but it's an old fashioned sound.Â
MyUsername2459@reddit
My sarcasm meter just exploded.
I'm sending you the bill, by the way. ;-)
Various-Tomatillo407@reddit
Lots of people have never heard that term before. Thank you for bringing it to my attention
juan_humano@reddit
The B stands for Butts. I think ill get my groceries elsewhere, thank you very much.
Jk. Used to live in Kerrville, HEB is great. The B does stand for Butts tho. Incidentally, the brautiful library in Kerrville, right by the river, is called the Butts-Holdsworth library. I didnt like much about Texas in general, but everything Butts branded i came across was pretty great.
Ambitious-Noise9211@reddit
Can confirm
One-Yellow1504@reddit
HEB is overrated. For some reason, Texans get orgasmic every time one is built, no idea why. Lived in Texas for 3yrs. Theyâre nothing special, except in Texas
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I'm tired of Walmart so I'm excited to get a new place to shop, and I've heard some of their fresh food is really good
DMJessus@reddit
We ship the HEB Texas Pecan coffee to my brother just about every month since he moved out of state.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I'm not a coffee fan but that actually sounds good!
woodwork16@reddit
Most of their store brands, HEB and Hill Country Fare are just as good, if not better than the national brands.
Also Nutty Blonde Cookies. My favorites and I use them for the crust when I make cheesecake.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I'm going to try every cookie they have
Athrynne@reddit
They are a regional chain, this would be like me asking you what to get from Wegmans.
BioDriver@reddit
Wegmanâs bakery is elite
oldfarmjoy@reddit
If you have never been to an H-E-B, you don't need to respond to this post. You are not the target market.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Custard cream pie, every time

Particular_Golf_6065@reddit

CirothUngol@reddit
Meal Simples, especially the seafood stuffed salmon, turkey asadero sandwich, and the spaghetti bolognese.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I love spag bol!
cody87hoke@reddit
I never buy big box store brands but HEB branded stuff is really good. Tortillas are amazing/ fresh, tortilla chips, salsa, the pre made fresh meals you put in the oven, the sushi is good, the one by me does crawfish boils on the weekends this time of year, pretty much anything they create.
HEB is like a cult in central/ anywhere they are in Texas. I lived in east Texas and NC before the army and moved to central Texas after. The first few months I didnât get the HEB hype but now itâs the only place I shop for groceries besides our little Mexican mart we go for specific things (my wife is from Mexico).
A big reason people love HEB is how much they give back, they pay great if you work there, what they have in the store is based on the community and when something like a hurricane happens they can mobilize an army sized relief effort faster than the FBI can respond to something.
So where you live matters. Austin HEBs (lived there to) are different than my HEB, the round rock HEB I lived by, or one thatâs in San Antonio. Even my HEB is different than the one 20-30 minutes away.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I've only been to the Liberty Hill one near Austin, and only when I'm visiting, so I haven't had much opportunity to check out the produce. My local supermarket is Walmart and I'll be glad to stop giving them my business.

Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I can't wait to go but I figured the local subs wouldn't know what to get because it's only been open a few weeks
SGDFish@reddit
Since everyone is mentioning the tortillas, I'll also throw in bunuelos & the apple bite things from the bakery
A lot of their pre-made lunches are pretty solid as well
Try to go at a weird time if you can though, it was still packed even during all the rain storms this past weekend
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
I only have weird times đ
Emotional-Loss-9852@reddit
But also their tortillas slap and their meat section is incredible.
Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit
All the meat is good. So many different cuts itâs awesome.
Their coffee is good too.
The ice cream is cheap and awesome.
The fish is good.
And obviously all the BBQ seasonings lol
kevinlc1971@reddit
HEB carries the best rubs for meat. Chupacabra seasoning is amazing if you smoke a brisket.
Particular_Golf_6065@reddit
Itâs new, so itâs probably a Gucc-e-b, buy groceries! And be happy their meat department doesnât smell like death and bleach.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Why would it smell like that.......?
Particular_Golf_6065@reddit
I have no clue! It was an old H-E-B in BryanÂ

Little-Jelly-8789@reddit
Loved HEB when we lived in Texas. Been close to 20 years since we left, but they used to have great meats. Bacon wrapped beef medallions (forget what cut) and also a peppercorn garlic marinated hunk of beef (again forget the cut). Both were excellent cooked on our charcoal grill.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
This sounds great! Thank you!
brzantium@reddit
Fresh tortillas (tbh, I think the HEB tortillas in the bread aisle are great, too), blackberry lemonade, Midtown or Central Market pasta, HEB hummus, Mi Tienda birra de res, Creamy Creations and Swoon ice cream (I think Lone Star Blast Sherbet is out now), and fresh bread from the bakery. Any HEB product with a green check mark (black in the bakery) has no HFCS, artificial ingredients, preservatives, or synthetic colors. If you're stuck between an HEB Organics item and a Central Market Organic item, pay the extra dollar for the Central Market product.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Thank you!
Old_Ant7118@reddit
Had to look this one up but it just looks like a grocery store
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Very popular among Texans, and I've heard they have particular items that are especially good, like their in house tortillas
HonestLemon25@reddit
Their ice creams are good. Theyâve got a lot of unique flavors for a fraction of what youâd pay for Ben & Jerryâs
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Awesome! Ben & Jerry's can be so expensive!
notadamnprincess@reddit
Markâs The Good Stuff salsa. The HCF brand cookies, particularly the Fudge Mallows, are good too. The frozen sheet pan meals are nice to have handy, and the rosemary crackers in the deli are fantastic. Everything else I can get somewhere else.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Thank you!

Their store brands are all excellent quality at a lower cost than the national brands, so just get your normal items but try their brands.
People love the hot fresh tortillas from the bakery section
Mi Tienda salsas are great. I love using their roasted pasilla salsa when cooking.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Thanks! I love it when own brands are good quality!
bigedthebad@reddit
Fresh tortillas. My Mexican wife is a tortilla snob and she loves them.
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)

get you a meal simple, some creamy creations, their cane sugar soda is good if you like soda, their general tso's chicken was a favorite of mine for dinner, if you can find their wings, those are great... god i miss HEB
Regular-Message9591@reddit (OP)
Awesome list - thank you!
Martothir@reddit
Creamy Creations is legit.
Gordita_Chele@reddit
The fresh tortillas sold in the bakery are great. Honestly, just explore and youâll discover a lot to love, itâs hard to boil down to ârecommended productsâ and individual stores often respond to regional preferences (sometimes down to neighborhood preferences). Like, our HEB has a Central American section, but they donât all have that.
