Is Porsche too posh to be a project? I haven't seen any here yet... Do you have one - come to the comment section.

There are some very good sellers for old or new parts in Europe.
I can recommend bf-torino seats (https://bf-torino.com) for a classic Porsche if you need new seats.
jigenvw@reddit
It's not that they are posh, they are just incredibly expensive to build
Dr_Ramekins_MD@reddit
There was a moment where older air-cooled Porsches were sort of affordable, but the market went crazy just a couple years before I'd have been able to buy one, and it's definitely outpaced my wage growth lol
ultramilkplus@reddit
I blame RWB. He made 911s cool again. Before he blew up you were only allowed to put 2 different aftermarket wheels on, only one or two different suppliers, only 1 or 2 different spoilers/fenders/seats/etc. RWB is when they got "cool" again instead of stodgy "Porsche Club" geezer mobiles.
That said, the 930's have always been cool. Nothing nicknamed "widowmaker" has ever not been cool.
thiccancer@reddit
RWB is controversial and not very liked in the 911 community generally. Questionable quality, etc. Essentially, rice.
MyMotorStory_app@reddit (OP)
Probably, even better as investment than crypto then!
Wonderful_Setting_29@reddit
As long as youre restoring vs modifying them, they were an investment at one point. Now they're so expensive that they likely wont continue to increase at the rate they were, if at all.
Warhawk_983@reddit
Unfortunately. Even though cars were never meant to be...
UmeaTurbo@reddit
You will never make your money back, so this is a labor of love if you want to do it.
jigenvw@reddit
German investors often suggest clients buy and store air cooled Porsches actually lol
ControlWeekly7900@reddit
They were all over the southeast US for 20-30 before covid. No shot, anymore.
RiftHunter4@reddit
Pay to play, really. I mean, Porsche has a crazy project community with support for seemingly every model they've ever made. There's even a shop that can permenantly fix the 996 IMS issue and resleeve the engine. Its nuts. Expensive, but you kinda get what you what you pay for.
Horse_Bacon_TheMovie@reddit
I wonder how 912 prices compare to 911 prices and if a 912 project would be cheaper
KamakaziDemiGod@reddit
And most people who can afford them, can afford to have it restored by professionals or to buy a premade restomod
I can't imagine there's many people who work on their own cars who can afford a 911. It's a different story for the front engined models or SUVs, but parts are still rare and expensive. A Taycan is one of the cheapest Porsche's you can buy but they aren't old enough to need a restoration
Aaron8681@reddit
I’m in the market for a project Porsche..
110percent_canadian@reddit
Got a 924 turbo paid 4.7k usd, the sport seats are the same as the 911 930 turbo which makes it the seats worth as much as what I paid for the car.
924 the people's Porsche plus if you wanna make it more utilitarian you've got a big safari/Rallye mod sceane.
110percent_canadian@reddit
Plus you've got alot of cargo space for all your tools
mbardeen@reddit
My 14 year project. Cost me around $7K usd to buy. It was running but had a ton of issues. It's now pretty much finished, apart from some small stuff. Total cost, all in, is probably around $25K usd right now.
mbardeen@reddit
Brad7659@reddit
Nice job. You can’t lose on these anymore, the value is going up so much
mbardeen@reddit
Well. When I bought there was an air-cooled 911 targa available for $13k. I'm kicking myself for not getting that instead. They're now worth around $60K to $90k locally.
I've got no idea how to price this car. It's 1 of 4 968s in Chile, and the only cabriolet. I think maybe $25k to $30k, but it'll really depend on the buyer.
Epic2112@reddit
You and me both. I bought my 951 for about $12, after deciding that the 911 I'd been eyeing was a bit more than I could afford at $15k.
The 951 is great, but I've permanently lost my chance to buy a 911, now that the prices have gone through the roof.
OweRouge@reddit
Very jealous of your car. I love the 968, especially as a cabrio and in this color combo. Love it.
Horse_Bacon_TheMovie@reddit
That mug hoard
MyMotorStory_app@reddit (OP)
Well done! Probably just to wash/polish here to finish?
mbardeen@reddit
This was its first time back on its wheels after a 6 month wait for parts..
Plaid_Piper@reddit
I had a Boxster S back in the day and there is a company that will swap the engine with a modern LS, so that's doable, and would be a *really* fun little car.
var-undefined@reddit
I don't think it is possible to drive an aircooled porsche without it being a project.
joestabsalot@reddit
As close as I'll ever get
MyMotorStory_app@reddit (OP)
Looks cool, any more details?
creep_nu@reddit
Squareback...check his post history. Excellent wagon
joestabsalot@reddit
Dude, thank you.
creep_nu@reddit
Got you. I've always dreamed of having a squareback, but my bodywork skills are non-existent and my budget to pay someone for bodywork is also non-existent lol. Take good care of her and ride slow my friend
Carbonbuildup@reddit
67 911 Targa S soft top project and my 964. Too posh? No, extremely expensive? Yes. You can’t do a 911 on the cheap because a rough car will always be worth more than one that’s been restored poorly. I really think that 924/944 and 914 are really starting to shine. If I were starting g out, I’d start there, a lot less money to restore, more of them around and easily as fun to drive.
ozzy_thedog@reddit
Wow that targa chassis is pretty far gone.
Carbonbuildup@reddit
Not as bad as it looks. Suspension pickups are fine. Also being a short wheel base 67 soft top and an S makes it well worth restoring. Will cost 100-120k to do and be worth 225-270. They only made 483 soft tops that year and less than 100 were S cars. If it wasn’t so rare I wouldn’t have bothered.
Brad7659@reddit
Not everyone likes these but here’s mine. I made a post a bit ago about it, it was rear ended and I got it for $3k. Still active title and the damage was not structural. Bondo and paint and sent it
Carbonbuildup@reddit
Such underrated cars with a brilliant chassis.
kingcobrav9@reddit
That's why Mazda made it..... Well better minus the weird engine.
Brad7659@reddit
I always overlooked the 924 over the 944. When this came up I realized they put the 944 engine in the 924S and I took a chance. My god it’s just as fun as the 944. My dad’s 944S is considerably quicker but the 150 hp engine in these is way too fun.

Well done, turning her back in the prestine look!
BaboTron@reddit
Who cares what other people think. Car preference hardly affects anyone else.
l8apex@reddit
There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche.
There's a cult following for air-cooled Porsche's. So anything you do that isn't "normal", they're going to chastise you. I normally wouldn't care about those fanatics, but they get annoying. They want every Porsche to be concourse-ready pieces of art.
I'd imagine that parts are getting hard to come by for them now. And a lot of the knowledge on them is starting to die off.
YousureWannaknow@reddit
Not only Porsche... Many brands have their cultists 😅
JCDU@reddit
Yeah but Porsche these days is insane, and also incredibly boring.
mbardeen@reddit
Porsche is pretty good about ensuring parts supply for its older models. You'll pay, of course, but they are available.
JCDU@reddit
I'll say it - unless it's a particularly rare or interesting one there's too many bloody Porsches on the scene already, some car shows it's like 25-50% of the lineup are just "some sort of 911" and it's boring as fuck.
Also the Porsche scene seems to be awash with money and a level of rivet-counting anoraks that is almost unsurpassed, I guess because ultimately there's often very little to distinguish between the cars otherwise.

jamesgravey@reddit
I bought a 996 in November, it blew up a week later. $30k to rebuild the engine. Paid $24k for the car.
ThePartyWagon@reddit
Damn, and this is why there aren’t many project Porsches. Average joes can’t afford the purchase price for a questionable car, then can’t double the purchase price when the motor blows.
PK808370@reddit
It’s actually common for Porsche’s to be project cars - not all the new crap, but, historically yes. It’s just that they are expensive enough most people couldn’t afford them as their project car. Historically, owning a Porsche meant having a project car :)
The3rdbaboon@reddit
Air cooled 911 are all very valuable now. But other models are still affordable
Feisty_Level42@reddit
Hard to find parts

Grouchy-Simple-949@reddit
I have a martini edition 924 project
SpaceCat72@reddit
Anything can be a project. And yes, restoration of porsches tends to be costly. But I've always liked them and would love to own one, any one. Maybe some day.
-Z_3_r_0-@reddit
Oh to be able to afford one.
soundslikeusererror@reddit
Look at Home Built By Jeff on YouTube. He's got a 911 and an Alfa Romeo he built in his home garage. Guy is an artist, he's that skilled.
teamgravyracing@reddit
My 1970 911 project. Owned about 12 years now. Wasn't running when i got it, just about to reinstall engine after some much needed maintenance. Had some rust repairs done by a shop but outside that, I've done all the work myself.
MyMotorStory_app@reddit (OP)
Amazing story! Thank you for sharing!
Heavy-Focus-1964@reddit
every time people say "air-cooled porsche" it blows my mind that so many of these were air-cooled. do they have issues with normal driving, like sitting in traffic when it's hot out?
funwithdesign@reddit
Air cooled is really a misnomer. They are really mostly oil cooled. It’s a combination or oil coolers and air movement over cooling fins.
funwithdesign@reddit
Any car can be a project. Whatever makes you happy.
wetblanket68iou1@reddit
LS swap.
Hazee302@reddit
Do whatever you want. Let the hate fuel you. You’re gonna be broke but, that’ll happen with every project.
CONVlCTlON@reddit
Most of them arent projects, It's just a car people buy. Most porsche owners will never turn a wrench on their own cars.

1988 924S - Watercooled Porsches are cheap and fun.

Nothing to do with being posh more about your bank account
OOFMAN-1234@reddit

the_s4lted_hash@reddit
I want a Porsche project, definitely not too posh to work on them I think. Just the bubble keeps normal people from enjoying them like back in the 80’s-90’s
