If you think a 2-seater is useless for real trips, you are probably just judging by trunk liters

Full-size 3 person tent
air mattress
pump for it
2 folding chairs
travel bag with food and clothes
2 thin blankets
2 fully packed backpacks
all cooking stuff we needed for 2 people
fire extinguisher?
All that camping gear was packed into a small Miata trunk (about 130 liters) for 7 days camping for 2 persons
And people still call the Miata "impractical" lol
What I'm trying to say is that trunk liters are a really lazy way to judge a car. Mine is wide and shallow, so the SHAPE is the real catch, not the volume. The trick was packing order, not gear. If you just throw everything somehow in the trunk, of course it will not fit since you have a lot gap there betweet items. Smart packing is the thing.
The other thing nobody talks about, the trunk is not your only space where you can put your stuff, there are a lot of space where the top goes, so when I’m with top up, there are a lot of space. But I did’t touch it, because I go camping with top down)))
What is a car everyone calls impractical that you actually used for something real?
For those who won't believe me, I have a video evidence how I packed all that, can drop the link in a comment if anyone wants it

Cars that have a smaller trunk than the Miata;
Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ (but has rear seats)
Alfa Romeo 4C
Smart
LeoAlioth@reddit
Which smart? fortwo? ForFour, Roadster (coupe)?

Toyota IQ / Renault Twizy and probably some Alfa Romeos in the same category. Looking at this cars, Miata trunk is HUGE
Justin_inc@reddit
Those compete with the smart car and even then the IQs seats fold down and it becomes much more usable than the Miata.

That trunk wouldn't fit my gfs suitcase for a week trip to the beach. Also it wouldn't fit my golf clubs, snowboard, bike, guns, fishing rods, etc. 2 seaters are great, but I couldn't see one being my only car. I want one, but my daily is big enough for anything.
TheGuyDoug@reddit
Well it's because you take the wrong kind of trips. Stop packing a "snowboard" when that won't help you ultralight backpack for 7 days.
Idk what you're doing
JeffafaCree@reddit
Just make a snowboard when you get there
SithSidious@reddit
Completely agree. He needs to not fish and go to a movie theater instead, then he can easily fit everything he needs

No im judging from experience

This is where the hot hatch is unmatched

Mate, all that camping gear can be packed on two bycicles that have no trunk.
Also, that's not really a lot of camping gear. It's more like the basics for comfort but nothing special.
Jungleradio@reddit
Shape definitely the problem with Miata trunks. I once had to rent one because the rental agency gave away the sedan I reserved. My carry-on just BARELY fit into the trunk. We’re talking squeezing it in there.
After a work meeting, someone asked if they could ride with me back to the airport. He ended up having to put his carry-on on his lap for the 35 mi drive.
Regardless, fun little car. Just not practical for the vast majority of us.
acolombo@reddit
No need to justify your impractical car with other people bro, it's your choice not ours!
After you come back from your trip, good luck if you ever need to move some furniture from one house to another, anything bigger than a bedside table and you are helpless. Or if you have any hobby like biking, or diy hobbies building anything other than scale models.

My Boxster has a 130L trunk and a 150L frunk. It's amazing. 2-seaters are the best!

Shit I got a full weekend worth of camping gear, AND everything I needed for a downhill mountain bike park in my ND. This includes my bike, huge bike gear duffel bag, bike shoes, full face helmet, neck brace, etc. I even had a small ice chest that barely fit.
Euler007@reddit
Or I have a kid in a rear facing car seat and my stroller doesn't fit in your trunk. I was young, single and thought I knew everything once too.
Simoxs7@reddit
Honestly the Trunk in my TT is just huge, as long as I don’t have kids I will keep driving two seaters…
Promit@reddit
The trunk in the TT is half the car when you push the useless rear seats down. Mine took 3 international size checked suitcases, two carry-ons, and still had space to spare.
Simoxs7@reddit
Unfortunately I‘m 2m (I think 6‘7) tall so while I fit in the drivers seat the rear seat only goes half the way down, still loads of space.
daver456@reddit
Allegedly my S2000 has a bigger trunk than your ND but I can’t see cramming all that stuff in there. Good to know it’s possible.
I had an FR-S as my only vehicle for 3 years and it’s amazing what you can actually pack into a very small car.
My wife has a Mk7.5 Golf R right now and with the back seats folded down it is amazing how much stuff you can cram in that car. I don’t like SUVs so this was our compromise and it’s been working well for the last 5 years.

Honestly, trunk hinges play a huge role(forgive me, I don't know the ins and outs of the s2k deck lid). If you've got the loops that attach under the rear deck they take up so much room that a lot of space becomes unusable. The top mounts like the Miata open up a lot more usable space
The_Mosephus@reddit
Just get a vette. The c6 has 634L of cargo space
CanISeeYourVagina@reddit
I had a C5 corvette that you could put a week and a halfs worth of stuff in. Trunk was HUGE.
LeoAlioth@reddit
I daily drove a smart roadster coupe for a couple years. Now my brother does. Same as with a miata, it does require some planning when packing stuff in, but the addition of the frunk, and because we are not that tall, space behind the seats, you can fit a surprising amount of stuff in the car.

With coupes that don’t have harnesses to disconnect (and airbags) I just unbolt and pull out the passenger seat for tons of space. Probably one of my favourite hacks. If really needed, if I take a passenger and I don’t have the passenger front seat they can just take the back one and have infinite leg room.
A_Pointy_Rock@reddit
That's great, but I am a bit confused by your logic.
Litres do not care about shape. They are just a function of capacity.
theDartVader@reddit (OP)
I mean it's 130 litres, there are backpacks that size. So people think that it's super small
DazingF1@reddit
It is super small. And you managed to fit 120L in a 130L capacity.
You're obviously very good at playing Tetris, but nobody is saying you can't do a road trip in a small roadster. Two large bags is all you need.
Use_Your_Brain_Dude@reddit
My MR2 Spyder has no trunk at all. I can fit a small bag (or a small grocery haul) in the compartments behind the seat and hang a garment bag from the roll bar. At least I don't have to drive a miata around though. Thank god.
