It was weird being a kid wondering what the "net" in "Mathnet" was all about only to watch Nick at Nite with my grandma and see Dragnet and be like "ohhhhhh"
Also 1982, and a decent chunk of my childhood programming was PBS and Nick at Nite, plus reruns of MacGyver and CHiPs during the summer. Shaped me into what I'm sure was an... interesting kid to have in class.
Thank you for introducing me to Fibonacci, the Maltese Pigeon, a giant wooden cheeseburger.. with hinges and Yeardly Smith before she became Lisa Simpson.
Watched that video the other night and it did bring back some memories.
What amazed is is that at the time I had no idea that the Chief was James Earl Jones or blanked out on that fact by the time I had even finally watched Coming to America for instance as a kid.
Oh wow - this was my JAM as a kid. I absolutely loved the Mathnet segments. Just recently, I was thinking it would be a hilarious idea to cosplay Kate and George at a random convention and see who would recognize the show. (True PBS old-heads would KNOW!!) 😂
I was raised by my mom and my aunt, and both of them were math teachers. Square One TV was my jam, especially Mathnet. That was my introduction to James Earl Jones, since he had a recurring role as "The Boss"
I’ve been wanting to make a post about this being the defining Xennial PBS show. A lot of the ones we grew up with spanned generations or were handed down to us from years earlier. This one was built for us specifically.

I loved Mathnet. Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa Simpson) was also on it at one point.
Jasoco@reddit
The episode with the baseball player and the ape I believe.
metompkin@reddit
Holy shit, I remember that episode from 30+ years ago.
graveybrains@reddit
My own personal Mandela effect: For some reason I distinctly remember the male math cop being played by Brent Spiner.

They do look a bit similar. I could have easily made the same assumption, especially at that age.

I loved Dragnet as a kid, Harry Morgan was a definitive character actor of my childhood, so I picked up on the parody straight away.
Still love Dragnet, actually. I listen to the radio dramas regularly.

This song echos in my brain at random
big_ringer@reddit
I love that they kept that joke running throughout the show, and then they did it with the PBS ID logo after the show was over.
Redbird9346@reddit
There’s an upload of Episode 101 on the tube which was from a later rerun and had the 1989 PBS ident replacing this classic.

I loved that show despite hating math.

My kids now watch Odd Squad on repeat and all I can think about is Mathnet 😢
BrattyTwilis@reddit
Yeah, Odd Squad is basically what would've happened to Square One if it was still running today
khumprp@reddit
Such a great show, my kids loved it too.

"The following story is a fib. But it's short."
Mathnet (and Square One TV) was my jam back in the day. Such a great show.

Same. It was years before I understood the parody, and I always heard the Mathnet theme and narration when I watched the occasional Dragnet rerun.

Loved this show and Square One.
ModBabboo@reddit
Loved Square One and Mathnet. And Mathman - he rarely beat Mr. Glitch so catching an episode where he did always felt special.
mystiqueallie@reddit
I still occasionally get the Archimedes song stuck in my head.
Mathnet was my favourite segment- I can probably trace my love of logic and word puzzles back to it and Square One.
dilutingthebrand@reddit
I loved Square One as a kid, but that video was poorly researched.

One. One. Two. Three. Five. Eureka!

I love Mathnet. I tried showing it to my kids but the quality is bad on modern TVs.
I didn't know mathman wore a Michigan helmet. That is cool. Go blue!

Mom banned after school TV for a little while, this ws the one show I was allowed to watch because it was educational.
