Kew Gardens just hit 35.1°C, smashing its previous May record by NEARLY 5°C and exceeding its all-time June record from 1976 by 0.5°C — while Oxford later shattered its 211-year May temperature record by OVER 3°C.

Step Dad told me that paying for my kids to go on a trip to Switzerland with Scouts next year was a poor decision, when I should be paying into my pension instead.
I said "Do stuff now while we've got the chance"
He asked what I meant, I looked him straight in the eyes and said "it's 35°C in May."
KaiserMacCleg@reddit
What was his response? Error 404?
Bellybutton_fluffjar@reddit
No response. Can't deny anymore.
He's been very critical of me for stopping my pension contributions. I did it the week we had 40°c in the UK around 4 years ago. There's just no point. Enjoy what time we have left.

This has been me with my retirement, but I’m only 28… On one hand, I would like to have the funds to live once I’m old and done with work. But on the other hand… how can I be sure we’ll have a functioning society by the time I retire?

I wonder how many El Nicolas cycles our modern civilization will endure.
4ab273bed4f79ea5bb5@reddit
I mean this one is already looking catastrophic for food production.
BoysenberryMoist6157@reddit
Combined with the oil & fertilizer shortage.. not looking good.
4ab273bed4f79ea5bb5@reddit
I think the drought is so bad its actually going to moderate the fertilizer shortage next year. USDA is saying 20% wheat acreage abandonment and its probably way higher. That would explain why urea futures are crashing.
Diesel prices, however, might actually start making rural American towns collapse, like soon.
malieno@reddit
honestly at this rate I don't feel foolish for saying that this one might be it

The current El Niño is only just beginning (set to peak around November IIRC) and is expected to be a major event, so it will probably be a sign for things to come in terms how humans react to a rapidly-shifting climate baseline.
muddaFUDa@reddit
Well so far we’ve increased fuel and fertilizer prices for shits and giggles. This is fine.
Aeceus@reddit
We arent even in El Niño yet either so thats fun

Absolutely miserable experience in the UK. Houses built to trap heat. Generally don't come with AC. Horrible humidity. Yep, we are fucked.
I mean I have solar powered AC for my home, but it doesn't help when I have to go outside.
ZeroSumClusterfuck@reddit
Reflective window tint helps a lot too. People think we've got aircon running when they come into my house on a hot day. Anyone with the option to do so should also be painting their house white at this point.

Recorded a high of 33C in our back garden in Leicestershire on 26 May this year. Today it's expected to reach 30C. The average temperature for May in the UK ~~is~~ was 14-20C. There was also a thunderstorm in the early hours of this morning which easily had the most lightning I've ever seen in a storm in the UK. It was almost strobing. Never seen a storm like that here.
EmergencySushi@reddit
West Midlands here. Can confirm the thunderstorm in the early hours was indeed one of the most impressive I’ve ever seen. Easily 4-5 lightning a minute at the peak, and it lasted a good two and a half hours. Not nice at all.
poop-machines@reddit
In Coventry I saw lightning every 5 seconds or so at it's peak, for about 2 minutes. Never seen it like that in the UK. Only florida. It's nuts.
Straight_Flan1347@reddit
We've had a few of those storm in Chicago this spring. Just absolutely massive and prolonged lightning strikes, one after another. I've lived in the Midwest my entire life, never have I seen or heard a storm like these.

This week during an extreme late May heatwave London’s Kew Gardens recorded 35.1°C which broke its previous May record from 1922 by NEARLY 5°C and exceeded its all-time June maximum from the 1976 heatwave by 0.5°C.
Oxford then shattered its 211-year May temperature record by OVER 3°C with 33.7°C.
These are century-scale temperature benchmarks being obliterated by absurd margins. The future is bleak.

lol jokes aside they’re one of the few sensible countries to have used nuclear energy power plants for a lot of their energy consumption
Yes of course renewables are better environmentally but both are in a better galaxy than Dino juice
Kaining@reddit
They weren't better in the 50's when we went full in on nuclear.
Because there was none at the time. Renewable being a better alternative is so recent it doesn't really count. We ought to rebuild our economies toward renewable but "democracies" are to occupied to sell out to oligarch to actually put the work in.
