42/50 unrelenting positivity about the westest of Virginians.

This is our newest unrelenting positivity post.
The state in question is the great state of West Virginia.
To all our foreign friends give a shout ask questions send praise. To our Americans do the same.
Ask questions, share stories, make jokes. Just remember not to be a jerk.
Recall the famous phrase my grandma invented “if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything that isn’t redemptively funny.”
Stay tuned for 43/50 after this one. Only a few more.
The states are in random order based on my whim at the moment. Today’s whim is losing my dog in hill country and it scared the heck out of me.

Highly underrated outdoors. Dolly Sods is gorgeous.
WARitter@reddit
And if it too crowded Roaring Plains, Canaan wildlife refuge etc. will be nearly empty.

I haven’t been but please do not get me started about how much I like federal wilderness areas.
Athrynne@reddit
They're are so many beautiful areas! I used to live in Northern VA and I would hike out along the VA/WVA border all the time in GWNF and it's a delight. So quiet because people would rather go to Shenandoah.
Asleep-Hold-4686@reddit
Question, will they ever build an airport in the eastern West VA?
West VA is home to some of the kindest people.
WARitter@reddit
I mean eastern WV is so close to Dulles.

If you have an interest in Fallout 76 and road trips this segment on West Virginia is great https://youtu.be/iSIDtxHaFpk?t=7955

I was there for the Wasteland Jamboree earlier this month, and the guy from Bethesda who picked the location for 76 said that he's heard from some of the towns/locations that the game generated enough tourism to pay for desperately needed maintenance and restoration. Helvetia in particular has seen a massive increase.

Morgantown is one of the most underrated college towns in America
Unbelievable scenery
Mothman (or the Flatwoods Monster)
Birthplace of a ton of great college football coaches. Nick Saban, Lou Holtz, Curt Cignetti, Jimbo Fisher.
One of the best state mottos: Montani semper liberi (mountaineers are always free).
The Quiet Zone is fascinating.
The state’s “Byrd droppings” means that West Virginia is home to a lot of neat government-related stuff. A spy telescope. The congressional bunker (which you can tour at the Greenbrier). The presidential bunker (which you can’t tour). The FBI archives. If you own a savings bond, it was likely processed in Parkersburg, WV.
Morgantown’s Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system is one of the neatest public transportation systems in the world.
The New River Gorge Bridge is a great spot, but Wheeling is home to one of America’s first suspension bridges.
Tudor’s Biscuit World.
Birthplace of much of the labor movement in the United States.
WARitter@reddit
Randy Moss is also from WV.

Sing it with me everyone...
COUNTRY ROADS!
(The original songwriter of this song, who penned the lyrics for/with John Denver, confirmed that the song lyrics reference the state of WV, and not western Virginia, despite the geography mentioned in the first verse)
WARitter@reddit
Technically the blue ridge and Shenandoah river are in like, 20 miles of WV.
rapiertwit@reddit
There’s a culture of “you do you” in rural WV that you don’t often find in rural areas. People will help you if you ask for help, but they stay out of each others’ business mostly. The downside is you get some really eccentric people. The upside is you get some really eccentric people.

One of the most beautiful states, certainly east of the Mississippi. My spouse is from there, we go back as often as I can.
LexiD523@reddit
I was in Braxton County about a month ago and had a great time. The scenery is beautiful, the little cryptid museums in Sutton were fun, and it was artsy in a way my HCOL Maryland town likes to pretend it is but no artists can actually afford to live here.
GodlyAxe@reddit
Oh how I yearn to have a real West Virginian pepperoni roll someday!
An8thOfFeanor@reddit
God was having a good day when he made West Virginia
PinchePendejo2@reddit
God, I love that state. Wonderful people. Wonderful scenery. And Tudor's Biscuit smacks.
thatguywithatoaster@reddit
Tudor's Biscuit world absolutely bangs. Also can't forget pepperoni rolls
mickeltee@reddit
The New River and New River Gorge are absolutely stunning. If you ever get a chance check out bridge day. Dolly Sods is also spectacular outdoors.

Some beautiful wilderness and the best rafting in the country.

The home of FIESTAWARE
Hoosier_Jedi@reddit
My grandmother was from Welch. Exploring it in Fallout 76 felt weirdly personal.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
I kind of need to play that game….

I've always wanted to see the mountains that were once next to Scotland.
CupBeEmpty@reddit (OP)
We have them up here in ME and NH.
wormbreath@reddit
West Virginia fascinates me. Hollers. Appalachia. Hank Williams.
UnofficialCapital1@reddit
Elaborate on the Hank Williams part? He was from Alabama. He happened to die here but it's not enshrined into local lore.
Ambitious-Yak-9326@reddit
I’ve heard nothing but good things about New River Gorge National Park!
Also, West Virginia gave us the McElroy brothers and they’re some of my favorite podcasters.
PacSan300@reddit
I find it to be a neat and ironic fact that New River is geologically actually one of the oldest rivers in the world.
BrainFartTheFirst@reddit
Fiestaware is made there! My favorite dishes!
Cuddles_McRampage@reddit
If you're into glass you should go and visit the Blenko factory in Milton.
SnapHackelPop@reddit
Driving through on the way to Wilmington NC, you get what John Denver was talkin about
rm45acp@reddit
Some of my fondest childhood memories with my mom were rafting the new river. I'd love to take my own kids on a rafting trip down there someday, beautiful country
Folksma@reddit
Everyday living in DC I understand a little bit more why eventually people buy a house in West Virginia and just live with the commute
