People who have/had RGB builds for a long time, do you still enjoy looking at your build or did it fade away in the background?

I went for a zero RGB build, prioritising air flow (mesh rather than glass).
I like the idea of having the PC on my desk (once I'll have a big desk) with a fancy CPU cooler with customisable image etc one day. But I do wonder whether that's something people cherish after a while as well?
PunchBeard@reddit
I have RGB on my CPU cooler fans but the window on my PC faces away from me so I never notice it. I asked my wife, who sits on the couch next to the tower, if the lighting bugs her but she says she never notices and when she does she likes it. But it being RGB wasn't really the selling point one way or another and I've never really care about it.
9okm@reddit
I got sick of it very quick, many ago. Now I like just enough light to know the system is on, and no more.
chalknation@reddit
Power led says hi
ah__there_is_another@reddit (OP)
Ahahah I don't dare let the PC in sleep mode as the blue blinking power LED will be as bright as police lights all night long, so annoying
9okm@reddit
Yeah, you can just unplug the power button led.
chalknation@reddit
Yea my old case had one tiny red led, my new corsair case has the damn northern lights so I unplugged it
9okm@reddit
Sometimes. Though often I find the power button light annoying and would rather a dim glow from a strip on the GPU, or just memory, etc.
markovianmind@reddit
I only have one light in my pump to show where cpu temp is. probably ok to have on on ram for gpu if I had that ram
ConjugalVisitor234@reddit
Same. It was a fun novelty when I first built it and I was very impressed with myself. The build I had before had a single case RGB fan that died soon after installation. My current build has RGB on the 7 case fans, ram, processor cooler, GPU, mouse, keyboard and even a bit on the mobo. I turn it off all the time
kaje@reddit
I loaded up a PC I built several years ago with ARGB in Corsair's ecosystem, where I could control each fan and strip individually. Corsair's software allowed for so much customization, with like effects layered on top of other effects. It was nifty messing around with it for like a week. After that, I shut off the lighting and never turned it back on.
MagicMaverick22@reddit
I got mine on the desk too. I like changing colours and desktop wallpapers once a month or so, from Darth Vader red to Slytherin green, Malthael ghostly white and so on …
MyStationIsAbandoned@reddit
I think now days most people go for one or two colors. No one ever really liked the the rainbow vomit crap except maybe a few people i guess.
personally, I have one solid color just so i can see inside the case. i went with zero lights at first but I couldn't see if the fans were on without a flash light. so the lights do serve a real purpose. i bought some light strips.
if PC building weren't completely screwed for the next 10 years, i'd say my next build is going to be mostly white so that i can see inside it better...but the way things are going, it feels like this is going to be my last PC for a while.
BeholdThePalehorse13@reddit
My last pc was rather bright. Clear glass tons of rgb. Way too bright for me.
New build I just finished has a 360 so with rgb, rgb ram, gpu has a little (7900xtx hellhound) and the power cables for the you have little ovals of rgb. That’s all in a rog strix Helios black case that has smoked or tinted glass. Lights up the case and very little else. Not much of the light gets out to light up the room. So yea, I love runs, just in moderation and not distracting.
rdldr1@reddit
I only have my RGB kick in when there's computer audio output. Basically the RGB run when I'm listening to music, playing video games, or watching porn on my computer.
errorsniper@reddit
I dont currently but I used too.
My adhd is bad. It took me like 2 weeks to just turn it off because it was so distracting.
thefuzzylogic@reddit
I like a touch of RGB, like fans with a LED ring instead of the whole blades, that sort of thing. I run a very subtle spinning animation on them to give the appearance of motion.
I also run the lighting at 50% brightness so that it isn't attention grabbing but still showcases the effort I put in to the watercooling setup.
VWLupo@reddit
I have my rgb build set to a nice static red. Its nice and because its dim. It doesn't annoy me! The constant cycling of dynamic rgb would destroy my eyes lol
Ok-Can-7995@reddit
Yeah, it was cool for about a month. I havent shut them off. But I turned everything into a light solid color. Looking back. I wouldn't do it again.
GrimSlayer@reddit
I’ve set my systems backlights to just a static color and don’t buy parts based off RGB. I’ve never been a fan of the multi color.
GoneKrogering@reddit
Same. I prefer the static color at a lower brightness.
Exodus_Black@reddit
When I built my computer in 2015, I included RGB fans and light strips. I've upgraded some components since then, but am still using the same case and fans, so I still have RGB. I still like it.
I also never went for crazy effects or changing colors. It can do that, but it's not what I wanted. I really just use it as a mood light that also lets me see inside my case. I guess it's more of a way to add a splash of color to my desk.
ZeroXNova@reddit
I still really enjoy mine, mostly because I can change how it looks on the fly. I’m someone who frequently wants to change up colors on things, so an RGB build was perfect for me.
theresmoretolife2@reddit
I still enjoy it. It’s solid color most of the time (pure white) with the RAM and GPU on default rainbow wave. I come from the pc building era before RGB where it was static color LED fans and static color cold cathode so having a PC case light up the room has always been “cool” to me. Doesn’t get old but the flashing lighting pattern of ARGB I don’t have on much due to it being distracting depending on the tasks I’m doing at the computer.
Grumpy_Ontarian_III@reddit
The appeal didn’t last long. The backlit RGB keyboard is handy in the dark, but that’s about it.
PloksGrandpappy@reddit
I agree, but then decent shine through key caps are impossible to find, especially in non-OEM profiles, which is bizarre to me with how popular custom RGB keyboards and keycaps are.
Foul_Actually@reddit
My ram lights up the hallway to the kitchen when I want to sneak a snack.
Strong-cognac@reddit
never had rgb never will, too flashy
PloksGrandpappy@reddit
It got old pretty fast, and I could never quite get it all to work together so I don't bother with it anymore.
I had mine set up so the CPU fan would glow a "hotter" orange as the CPU temps rise which was fun, until I had to reconfigure it every time there was a software update. All of the various RGB controller softwares are buggy garbage, they have driver issues, they suck up system resources, and there's a bunch of compatibility issues you won't find out about until after you've installed the parts. Maybe I just didn't have the patience to do it properly but the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.
On my next build I'd maybe consider doing subtle RGB from ram sticks or a CPU cooler depending on the case I end up with, but I'll stick to one RGB component only. I'm not going to go out of my way to make it happen or spend anything extra to get it.
Part of me really wants to do a black/chrome/stainless steel look, sort of like a motorcycle engine, so I'll probably try for that instead of sparkly rainbow farts.
combovertomm@reddit
I spent a lot of money on my components not for them to have some form of aesthetic when it comes to them.
silverbulletbill@reddit
I setup my RGB to be ambient lighting reflecting what happens on the screen so I like it..
Pidjinus@reddit
For me, it fades with time, but, i do turn it on from time to time. I never intended for it to be 9n all the time.
I use signarg to control/ have them turned of. When i do want it on, i usually keep a slow moving pattern or solid. Having a decent rgb hub helps as it remembers the off setting for fans.
donkeyknuckles@reddit
I don't know if it counts as a long time but I've had mine with full RGB puke (fans, AIO, custom stimer, 8 inch LCD screen, keyboard, plus more) for over a year and a half and I still love it. I'm almost 50 years old and it brings a smile to my face every time. But I'm probably an outlier.
Kessarean@reddit
Different age bracket but in the same bucket!
LiliaBlossom@reddit
I mean I had RGB builds (however my last was just the fans) for over 8 years now and I still like it. I prefer just the fans, tho, but now also my AiO and my GPU and MB glows. Always static on a color tho, and just one color, befitting my mood. I don‘t like screens in my build as well.
Arcade1980@reddit
A few years older than you and still enjoy the RGB system I built in 2019 😁
Mahkuro@reddit
turning 50 in 3 weeks and trying to find a gpu to maximize my RBG. I adore the lights! even got stared at cause I used my gaming laptop in a meeting the other day. the only pc with more rbg would be the wife.
nbfs-chili@reddit
I'm almost 70, and I've had my setup since 2020. I still love the lights. And the grand kids do too.
billyBIGtyme@reddit
I’m 40 and there is no such thing as too much RGB. There’s dozens of us!!
donkeyknuckles@reddit
Dozens!
diejesus@reddit
34yo here and has the same feeling, I love colorful stuff!
Asian_Scion@reddit
I'm in the same boat as you. Just hit 50 and have had my custom build with a bunch of rgb since 2024 and I still love looking at my entire setup of office rgbs (not just from the pc).
donkeyknuckles@reddit
Yeah I have a bunch of RGB/LED peripherals l over my office too. Govee lights, infinity mirror, RGB shelf, lol. My sons clown me for it but I love it and have my whole setup one color scheme. Will rotate it every once in a while but mainly stick to the one color. It makes me happy.
Kessarean@reddit
I've had rbg things for probably a decade now. Started with a keyboard, and a few years back graduated to my rig.
My keyboard is plain now. But I'm not tired of the rgb. I still enjoy seeing it. It's not as exciting as day one, but years later I still feel a tinge of pride and excitement when I look over my build.
I have it on my desk next to me. I work from home, so I see it nearly constantly.
I went all white, which I think also helps. I always wanted rgb, so I got it, and I love it.
It's not for everyone and that's fine.
chronicbint@reddit
Lost interest years ago. Dont want bright distracting stuff when gaming. Looks cool in a photo then its shite.
ichnob@reddit
I've had my RGB build for 6 years, and I still like looking at it.
screwdriverfan@reddit
I like rgb on ram but that's it. I like subtle rgb.
MrInfinity-42@reddit
I'm mostly looking at the monitor anyway, but the RGB fans are a nice thing to have regardless.
Wish my motherboard had an argb header so I could turn them off for watching movies
AntiSimpBoi69@reddit
I dont know why I wanted tgb ram but I hate the contant light to im gonna go to a micro atx with closed side panel
Tiny-Extreme-9980@reddit
I basically turned almost all of it off. I wanted to have only my case (front part of it) and keyboard in RGB which wouldn't have bothered me. However, I had this amazing luck that my friends bought me an rgb mousepad, mouse and keyboard, and also my case came with RGB fans + I was limited to cheapest RAM sticks which were RGB. Weirdly my GPU doesn't have rgb XD
GordonGJones@reddit
Had RGB For a while. The case designs have improved a lot and I now have all black case and components but run all the RGB white it looks clean and smart. However I currently have to have it facing the wall with my newest office set up since I moved so could be any colour right now until I figure out a better solution
Mabiki_1975@reddit
I've only had mine for a year, and it's just the fans. I like it the color in the background. I also have the CPU fan set to change color in accordance with the CPU temperature, which is quite useful for monitoring.
salamander5678@reddit
It looks good when there is a theme. A warm orange in a Fractal North looks like a fire. All pink in a pink case also looks surprisingly good
jazza2400@reddit
Mine is all just matched red for ease since the case fans only have preset colour's. Oh and my rgb keyboard has lost blues I think.
Humble-Drummer1254@reddit
Nah, hate that I can’t turn my GPU 100% off…
Elicojack@reddit
I enjoyed my rgb pc for 8 year just looked great. But now i went with one without rgb
hyperform2@reddit
Faded away, the closest thing I care about now would be like a temperature display on the cpu cooler
ShinySawk@reddit
I love it still, but I kind if have a thing for colorful crazy lights so take that as you will
addemlit@reddit
I enjoy it but for some reason I can’t even change the colors of the lights anymore. L-connect software has always been dogshit
adanceparty@reddit
Its background noise but i enjoy it still. It also gives me extra light in my room during the goblin hours.
KajiKaji@reddit
I actually find it very distracting and had to disable all my RGB. There's just something about the LEDs in my peripheral vision that causes a flicker that keeps grabbing my attention. The keyboard was the worst and it took me 4-5 keyboards before I found one that isn't annoying. However, sometimes I'll do a vigorous cleaning of my office and get all the clutter off my desk and all the books back on the shelf and I'll turn the RGB back on for a bit for some mood lighting.
Cheap_Ad_3115@reddit
Rgb for >20 younglings
Sooner or later you'll get tired of the case and the backlight, and you'll just want to put it away somewhere so it doesn't make noise and doesn't get in the way.
asc3po@reddit
Blackout build. Fractal Torrent sitting inside the "PC shelf" of my desk. Air silently goes in the front and silently drifts out the back. I love it. Lets me focus on what I'm doing. Does not distract me with the loud colors and bright lights.
fr3nchcoz@reddit
Still love it (glass case, LED fans, AIO, RAM...). I don't like "moving" lights too much though like breathing cycles, it's a bit distracting. I just change the lights to a new theme every few weeks and mostly leave them on static.
HughJazkoc@reddit
No lights and no pc on the desk now. All that shit just took up valuable desk real estate and lights were distracting at night with flux turned on
Statchar@reddit
I got set of 3 bequiet light wings and keyboard and that's the extent of my RGB. Subtle enough for my liking and still enjoy it after years
heydanalee@reddit
Like it and still like it… when everything is clean and smooth etc. but between lights failing every now and then, dust build up (even small amounts annoy my vanity), it’s not worth it imo.
Next build is gonna be a nice black box. Hopefully lighter too as all this glass is heavy AF and I’m a weak nerd.
SciGuy013@reddit
I switched to noctua and no leds very quickly. It was distracting
mikeytlive@reddit
Always wanted one. Got one. Older I got I realized I really don’t pay attention to my PC even when it’s on my desk. Yeah it’s cool. My next build I am doing an all black build.
613_detailer@reddit
All my RGB is set to warm white, for lighting inside the case. I built a high end machine and put significant effort to make it look good, the warm white looks pretty classy in my opinion.
guntanksinspace@reddit
I got sick of it, not really because of the colors (but that also happened to me lol), but honestly I fucking hate MSI's xxxx Center software to manage it (Dragon Center, Game Center, whatever the fuck it's named now). It's so shit and it's so fucking bloated to install for something that's supposed to be lightweight.
I know OpenRGB at least works with some of my gear, but honestly I can't be bothered to care about the coloring besides turning those fuckers off.
Drummer123456789@reddit
I bought corsair parts so I could use 1 software to control rgb. Icue is horrible, and I hate using it. So I set the hardware light settings and uninstalled icue. Now I have the red/orange that I wanted with no bloatware. I will most likely buy rgb again but it was not as amazing as I was expecting.
Jenkinswarlock@reddit
Have You tried openRGB? You should be able to control your lighting without ICUE installed, I can control my ICUE cpu cooler with the program
Drummer123456789@reddit
I did. It was too much of a hassle getting it all set up and working correctly. I tried the open source fan controller too. Neither one of them worked super well so I just changed settings and uninstalled. It still has like multiple profiles that I can switch between so im chilling.
5kyl3r@reddit
i've build pcs nearly yearly for nearly two decades and i always go back and forth. i'll get sick of it and go super visually minimal the next one, then the next one i go full unicorn vomit and i sort of ping pong around
this time i went unicorn vomit but with a black case with tinted glass (lian li lambo, basically an evo rgb xl). the tint makes the rgb really subtle so the vomit is still there if you want to see it but it's subdued a lot and i like it. it's a good balance
Unknwn_Ent@reddit
I used to do RGB until I realized you just pay more for your components to have what is objectively a useless feature when it comes to performance which is the priority of most builds unless the sky is the limit on your budget.
The price isn't too astronomical; but it started to get annoying if I fell asleep with my PC on. I used to use it to play white noise/binural beats to sleep, and I'd have a hard time falling asleep with a bunch of bright ass rainbow pulsing lights pulsing in the background.
For those reasons I prefer minimal RGB. Often even if my components have them I completely disable em. Only RGB I have no is an indicator on my corsair AIO which changes colors corresponding to the temperature. That's an actually useful use case for RGB. The rest of the uses is purely aesthetic. I mean cmon when you're using the PC for what it's built for you can't even look at it, and most people throw their PC under their desk so it defeats the purpose unless you did all that for RGB to underglow your desk (that which coulda been done for cheaper).
belhambone@reddit
I've had mine for years, but it isn't technically "RGB"
I have it set to white, and it's an all black interior build. It's rotated so that the side panel faces out the front of my desk and I often look over at it.
So for me it's almost more of a shadowbox? All the parts and fans in black with the white light.
Jenkinswarlock@reddit
I have had full rgb for 5 years plus and I love the colors and the view of my pc, but since it’s in my room and I don’t turn off my pc I turn off the RGB at night time, I’m moving my pc into the spare room soon and ill keep the RGB on all the time
Cheezewiz239@reddit
26 now and I don't care anymore. My PC just sits under my desk now and I have an all black sleek set-up. In my early 20s RGB was my number one priority when choosing parts. Had a whole razer setup and made sure everything synced to razer chroma. Im talking motherboard rgb, rgb ram, rgb headphones, headphone stand, rgb mousepad and bungee and even a razer rgb monitor lol.
Ambitious_Lettuce_73@reddit
I have RGB headset I feel so childish when go on work meeting. From home.. I forgot turn it off..
It's beautiful. End up. When grow up. I just want simple stuff
HonchosRevenge@reddit
Can’t say I’m sick of it or I hate it at all, but I definitely pay like zero attention to it. I can’t give a fuck what color setting it’s on or whatever it’s doing. But my wife has our house RGB as fuck and she’s a pc gamer too so I gotta stick with the flow for the aesthetic
AgentOfSPYRAL@reddit
It’s fun, mostly set a static color and will sometimes do holiday colors.
ct1977@reddit
It was great as long as I was using an AIO, but once I switched to the Dark Rock Pro 5, the all black aesthetic looked much better.
ApolloAtlas@reddit
I was over it in less than a month.
Vyragami@reddit
You can easily change the color once in a while to shake up the lighting and vibe of your desk. Then it feels fresh again.
firestar268@reddit
Yes. But I keep it on one color and rotate occasionally.
secretreddname@reddit
Don’t even notice it. I set my colors once and never bothered to set them again.
nigelnebrida@reddit
I barely notice it now after nearly 10 years but when I do happen to look at my case I do think it looks pretty. That being said, I'm probably going to try and do a more simple all white light or no light look for a build I'm doing in the next year or so.
LightBeerIsForGirls@reddit
I like mine, but it’s not over the top compared to other rgb builds.
TheCudder@reddit
The only RGB in my build are the 2 RAM sticks and the cooler portion of the AIO cooler.
It's rather imo, so I still love it. Is do the same again whenever I upgrade.
LowBudgetViking@reddit
Had it for about two years now....I still kinda dig it.
raginghavoc89@reddit
I have my office PC set up to change color as the temperature of the pc changes. So for me it's become a functional item. Most of the time it just sits in its base color and doesn't even warm up enough to change color but when it does I immediately know. At this point it's almost like an achievement to see it actually working that hard. The PC that sits in my living room next to my TV has no RGB at all because it would be to entirely too distracting in the room.
ShinakoX2@reddit
Not an RGB person, but I did the same as you. Instead of an acrylic side panel I went with one that has a spot to mount an intake fan.
My PC sits on the floor on the side of my desk and I never look at it.
NecroJoe@reddit
I like having RGB because every couple of years I do like switching up the color theme of static colors.
I've never been into flashing, pulsing, fading, color-changing, reactive, or motion effects. I'll try them out when I first get a new item, when I cycle through all of the options...to then just settle on a static theme which will stay that was for a long time.
But also, having lights on gives me a visual on dust levels in the case. 😅
FaustHammer92@reddit
First PC I built was an all white RGB monster with a screen in the case and everything. I loved it and I'm proud of it, but I do not care for the RGB anymore. My second PC has absolutely NO RGB and I personally like the look of it much more.
Eve_Nightwalker@reddit
When I first built my pc I wanted a white rgb build.... Then I got sick of it and went with a mesh fractal north and Noctua fans. I still have rgb ram which I regret getting.
Siavik@reddit
Same. Rgb ram got annoying fast. Wish I only had the 2 subtle lights from the mobo and thats it.
Xenvar@reddit
I still love it and have different lighting for different wallpapers and lock screens.
yick04@reddit
I still like mine. Mine is pretty subtle, though, not in your face.
iMogal@reddit
My pc sits behind my monitor. I can't see it directly, but can see the glow coming from behind the screen. My keyboard is the only RGB thing I like about my PC.
Calculated_r1sk@reddit
i have mine set to change color on cpu temp. it was one of the settings with the aura amd thing....
TectonicMongoose@reddit
I like the rgb mousepad and keyboard I have and the rgb set up behind my monitor. the case rgb I don't spenduch time looking at though it's not that interesting. It adds a little to the ambiance of the setup but it's mostly neglible. And I just used the built in RGB I didn't buy any extra strips this a time around like the last time I built a PC.
RoboLaRuez@reddit
nope, built rgb in to it the first time, now as i upgrade i am not interested in all of the lights, i would actually prefer a matte black or white style with no rgb, i actually value performance more than anything now.
zone55555@reddit
I still enjoy it, but I have no intention of going hard on RGB for the next build. If there's some there's some but I'm not filling out a full ecosystem.
trueonyxx@reddit
Mine was rainbow vomit for a month, now I just keep it set to a simple color scheme to match my setup overall and keep it static
Embarrassed_Sun_7807@reddit
Having a rainbow on every fan gets a bit ridiculous but I've found it useful to have the colour on 1 fan change colour with temperature.
MrDDiddlez@reddit
I have a 4000D which has tinted glass and I have my fans on purple so it’s subtle, I still enjoy looking at it.
Fine-Actuator-6805@reddit
Recently got rid of my full rgb fans and went with the Lian Li TL lcd’s. Much cleaner look with the rgb just on the fan frames.
Monotask_Servitor@reddit
The main thing I like about mine is I have some of the RGB (in my case the RAM) synced to the CPU temperature, so I always have an instant visual of how hot the system is running. Other than that though I have it in an under-desk mount to free up desk space so it’s not particularly prominent.
_Flight_of_icarus_@reddit
The novelty wears off pretty quickly, but it's still fun to have a little bit of it IMO.
I kept the RGB on for the CPU cooler fan and RAM sticks, then disabled the rest. Enough for some accent lighting without going all out.
That said, it can be a useful feature on keyboards in darker rooms.
ElSelcho_@reddit
I've been building PCs since 1995 and like it, when my PC is a silent companion. When I got my 3070 about 4 years ago, first thing I installed was Armoury Crate to disable the RGB on it.
To each their own, but I never liked it blinking.
Salviati_Returns@reddit
My daughter's pc had rgb, it was not long before it was turned off. I went for zero rgb on my pc. Here is the crazy thing, rgb still has its way of popping up on both pc's. Sometimes when the motherboard updates, I get the glow in the back of both pc's and I have to invariably find a way to turn it off.
Sirlacker@reddit
I turned my computer the opposite way so I can't see inside the window of it lol.
I do however like an RGB keyboard, especially at night, even though I'm not directly looking at it, it definitely helps with hitting the right keys at times.
Due_Issue7872@reddit
I have a fully lit system and i love looking at it. It helps that i use one software to control everything so its all tied together.
