Having to poke open juice is something that absolutely separates Xennials from Millennials.

We also had those similar looking tubes of frozen juice concentrate that you mixed with water in a Tupperware jug

Plop
petuona_@reddit
One time I ate one of these straight with a spoon
tgerz@reddit
Did you poop a lot?
kathatter75@reddit
My mom would blend it with ice and make orange juice smoothies
shponglespore@reddit
A had a friend who would mix it with Everclear. (He went on to become a raging alcoholic Trumper.)
Ceemurphy@reddit
My friend knew a recipe that involved ice, milk, vanilla extract, and a shitload of sugar. It was very similar, yet ultimately superior to Orange Julius. Almost identical but lacked the horrible chalkiness of the stuff at the mall.
Sad_Limit_1472@reddit
I remember making this in Home Economics Class.
ancilla1998@reddit
My salivary glands just went into overdrive - I loved to eat a spoon full every time I opened one of these.
dickonajunebug@reddit
How delicious was it?
I always wanted to
petuona_@reddit
Hahaha very sweet! Kinda like Bart having the Squishee that was mostly syrup
PrimalSeptimus@reddit
I remember having apple juice straight up from one of those, and I never wanted the correct, watered down version ever again.

afleetingmoment@reddit
I was just recalling these with someone. We used to make lemonade and pink lemonade all the time, especially in the summer… and we would keep an orange juice on hand in the freezer if we ever ran out of Tropicana.
Do these exist in any form anymore?
ReverendDizzle@reddit
Yes, but recently I read that one of the big names (Tropicana?) was getting out of the frozen concentrate game.
Indubitalist@reddit
Minute-Maid. I bought the last can in my store (or the next three closest stores) because it had long ago fallen off the back of the freezer shelf and was sitting, orphaned, in the shadows so deep into that freezer that I had to go in past my shoulder to reach it. When I brought it up to the checkout counter it was an “unscannable,” like the time-travelers in Idiocracy. The young shopgirl trying to help me was puzzled and enlisted one of the elders, who went back to where I got it to get the price manually. I knew this was for nought, but I indulged their effort. He came back and made up a price on the spot, $5. That was high for a retail can of frozen orange juice, I knew, but also reasonable given that I was buying something that was otherwise impossible to buy, as it, in the moment after I paid, would have vanished from retail existence.
Anand999@reddit
You can still buy it, but definitely has much less shelf space dedicated to it nowadays.
bllawless@reddit
Holy inflation!
clutzycook@reddit
Yes they do. Old Orchard still has a wide variety in cans. I think I might pick up some lemonade this weekend.
BreckyMcGee@reddit
You can still buy this
Switcher1776@reddit
Yeah, my family was a frozen juice concentrate family.
sideshowmario@reddit
I remember orange, apple, grape, white grape, and lemonade. I'm probably forgetting a couple
Luci-Noir@reddit
There were so many different kinds. I think some juices, like the white grape, I’ve only ever had from these things.
stonhinge@reddit
There were a number of varieties. I recall fruit punch and a "tropical" fruit punch. Possibly a mixed berry in there somewhere.
Luci-Noir@reddit
It was pretty awesome. I’d go to make some and wonder what random deliciousness would be awaiting me in the freezer.
Icy_Advice_5071@reddit

KW5625@reddit
I wish they still sold Minute Maid Premium Fruit Punch that way.
TheWoman2@reddit
We would throw it in the blender with a bunch of ice and some water and make a slushy drink.
Pennsylvania6-5000@reddit
I miss Minite Maid Citrus Punch.
OmegaRainicorn@reddit
Ya, this was the way to go. I remember having a whole section of these concentrates in the grocery store and now I can’t think of the last time I even saw one.
CaptainSparklebottom@reddit
They are in the freezer section along with the frozen fruit. I almost bought a sweet tea version of one the other day.
kathatter75@reddit
In college, we’d get the Tropicana Twisters that came frozen in a tube and use them as our mixers for whatever frozen rum-based concoction we were making.
messfdr@reddit
I used to mix them strong for the extra diabeetus.
rifunseeker@reddit
Or even knowing that the opener is called a church key
AgentNose@reddit (OP)
In our house everything that opened a can was a can opener, lol. Church key, the twist manual can opener and the electric one on the counter.
tgerz@reddit
We called the metal thing for opening paint cans a church key. Stuff in the house was just a can opener.
Rendakor@reddit
Same here. I'd never heard church key until this thread, it was just a can opener.
CaptainSparklebottom@reddit
The electric one was garbage. It get all jammed up and drop the can if you weren't holding on to it. I remember my dad ripping it off the counter and throwing it in the garbage after it dropped a can of chili or something.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
bwvdub@reddit
Having one on your key ring before you were old enough to con the gas station clerk outta underage cig sales and started carrying a lighter that could open your bottles ☑️
ooooooooo10ooooooooo@reddit
Holy hell, this unlocked a core memory. My grandfather would always complain to my grandmother he could never find the the 'damn church key' whenever he wanted to open his beer and I was always confused why my grandparents had a key to the church.
tgerz@reddit
Born in 82 and I’ve never seen that can before. I’ve opened cans like this but not really that much. Not sure about this take.

I strongly prefer an apple.
Striking-Win-3239@reddit
Oh I remember my apple bong days!
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Have your tried potato? I’ve done it all. Even pickles
SilverMitten@reddit
I have, and potato is definitely my second favorite produce item. My least favorite is a zucchini, it works, but at what cost?
Appropriate-Food1757@reddit
Pickle is worst by far. I actually used lemon once and that was pretty tough. Too wet. I like the potato since you can really craft something special with a nice carburetor and a little extra distance between your fave and the flame.
I still have never bought a pipe since I “don’t do drugs” lol. (These days mostly edibles)
bigaman3853@reddit
flecko_@reddit
this reminds me of my dad coming home to me ripping a bong and freaking out. 20 years later he's using powdered cannabinoid drink mix
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
This must be a not Texas thing
flecko_@reddit
not sure. the brand is Sprinkle. I guess they've been around for at least 5 years but I only just heard of it. I'm thinking about trying some. I've been doing gummies and decarbing concentrate. the latter is still the best bang for your buck here in CA
ResurgentClusterfuck@reddit
I had to stop smoking everything so I order 50mg gummies and cut them up. They're not the cheapest though
toasterb@reddit
A normal one to pour from and then a little one on the opposite side to equalize pressure. That way you’re less likely to spill.
It’s been ages since I’ve seen one of those double-sided openers.
espressocycle@reddit
I still use them for evaporated milk.
rosebud3606@reddit
Me too. Gotta punch holes across from each other for air flow.
clutzycook@reddit
I have 2 on my fridge.
toasterb@reddit
Unless it succumbed to rust, I bet my parents still have the magnetic one with the white plastic front that said "Bottles" on one end and "Cans" on the other.
Despite seeing it used when I was younger, for the longest time I wondered why you needed the pointy end to open a can of soda since it had a tab already.
espressocycle@reddit
The original beer cans required these.
agentfantabulous@reddit
I still have the one I grew up with. Because I might need it some day.
Downtown_Confusion46@reddit
Same. We use it to open maple syrup cans we order from Quebec. What do you call it? We call it a church key. No clue why, is that actually what it’s called?
Lehk@reddit
the opposite end opens beer bottles
espressocycle@reddit
The sharp end used to open beer cans before pop tops.
Downtown_Confusion46@reddit
That’s mainly what ours gets used for.
Sharessa84@reddit
The explanation my mom gave me is that bottle openers are called church keys because its the first step to going to church. You open the bottle, you drink, you get drunk, you feel bad the next morning so you go to church to repent. Something like that.
agentfantabulous@reddit
We always called it a church key here in the Deep South.
LAharbour@reddit
It’s called a church key.
smoresporn0@reddit
I collect em. Every antique store has a drawer of them and I like finding branded ones.
stonhinge@reddit
I used to have a Hamm beer one, but lost the damn thing. My ex-wife probably has it.
smoresporn0@reddit
Hell yeah
stonhinge@reddit
That is exactly like the one of mine that's gone missing. You're in the clear though, because mine was well-loved and had a bit of rust and black "gunk" in all the letters. (also my ex-wife would never have "porn" in her username. She was a bit strait-laced.

higglesworth@reddit

toasterb@reddit
Ah that's right. Definitely a term that I learned through media. I don't remember my parents calling it that.
TheWoman2@reddit
We called it a bottle opener because the other side opens pop bottles.
stonhinge@reddit
Have always called them that and always have one stuck to my fridge with a magnet.
Haven't actually used one on a can in recent memory, or bottle for that matter. But the bottle-opener end works really good for popping the vacuum seal on some jars so that I can get the damn thing open.
Khymira@reddit
I have two and use them on the regular. What else are people opening tomato sauce cans with??
joeyblow@reddit

FoppyRETURNS@reddit

PureOrange7049@reddit
When I was pregnant I was having the most ridiculous craving for apple juice. Not just any apple juice though, only the Allen’s that came in the big blue can. I didn’t even have an opener, I ended up stealing the one my Mom had in her drawer from when we were kids.
exseven@reddit
This is the best tasting apple juice right here, straight from the can
PureOrange7049@reddit
It was. They stopped selling it a few years back, the one in the bottle from concentrate just doesn’t hit the same.
Alice-Stargazer@reddit
I miss Hershey syrup in a can. It was much thicker than the plastic bottled syrup sold today.
JohnBrine@reddit

scarred_but_whole@reddit

OmegaRainicorn@reddit
Did you have an early childhood of hose water like ?
scarred_but_whole@reddit
Yep. Outside after breakfast and you don't go inside for anything except lunch until the street lights go on. When I get super hot now I sometimes feel like a face full of freezing cold rubber-tinged water would absolutely hit the spot.

GarminTamzarian@reddit

...okay... so I've been told forever I'm a millennial... yet... I keep getting reinforced as Gen X and a Xennial based off of my life experience... which one is it oh Great Generation Label Master?!?!?
Luci-Noir@reddit
It’s weird how snobby some of these people are.
Liroy_16@reddit
That and I also think it's strange to care so deeply about generations... they really don't matter after the Boomers in my opinion...
Boomers quickly and violently shut the door after they bought their $60,000 houses.
Gen X lived in the Boomer's wake and unknowinlgy based expectations on fleeting ideals. Most Xennials I think will live here.
Millennials were sold a falsehood of success equating to effort and timing based on Gen X life experience. Some Xennials might live here.
Gen Z are apathetic because they saw what happened to the Millennials.
Who the hell is Gen Alpha?
Gen X gets an honorable mention because they're the forgotten generation... latchkey kids... but, we all got screwed by the boomers end of the day...
SirStocksAlott@reddit
No generational hate/wars. Breaks Rule 3.
Liroy_16@reddit
No hate or war here, my friend. These are just truths set in time by generational name. The boomers were objectively the last generation to have an accessible American Dream. Gen X got to see some of that, but the generation prior to them had the power and business and the disparity in wealth between generations is, again, objective. Millennials were told of the ways of the Boomers by Gen X and it still hasn't panned out the way they were told. Xennials, by definition, will fall in between. Gen Z are categorically the most depressed and apathetic generation thus far based on research being done. Gen Alpha are barely Sophomores at the oldest and are jussssst getting to see the world being left for them.
If we can't discuss differences, sure. But, nothing I said was disparaging to any other generation.
I don't really care, though... it's reddit, lol...
herseyhawkins33@reddit
Millennial is 81-96. It's well defined.

I thought the generation names were all stupid when millennials were all the rage to blame... so I was a millennial talking about millennials being stupid. Gen X aren't weird old people, they're people I identify with in so many ways...
I'm still lost outside of the giant gap of years provided as "my generation."
Liroy_16@reddit
So...
...I, at a certain point in my life, did have to open cans of juice in this manner...
I have not been separated from Xennials, I've been brought categorically closer to Xennials... based on the picture I'm replying to...
wokeafsince83@reddit
I’m 43 and we definitely did this growing up. I also remember threading string thru the holes to make things hold while I’d walk on the cans
funkytoot@reddit
THE BEST TASTING SH!T
ShawnPat423@reddit
Lol I still have a church key handy...
Pletcher87@reddit
How’d ya like a Hawaiian Punch? Uh, ok.
CyDJester@reddit
Dude. I was born in 81 and grew up in the deep south. We had those for a looooong time
Doc_Hollywood@reddit
I caught the tail end of this era. I guess this solidifies me as a xennial
Heavy_Mongoose5859@reddit
im a millennial we didnt do this
jtcordell2188@reddit
I’m ‘93 and we did this when I was a kid
Carnephex@reddit
Anyone else remember the eggnog and chocolate milk in a can? I tried explaining this to my young coworkers and they're friggin bewildered.
CaptPotter47@reddit
I have never done this. Maybe this is more a regional thing?
AgentNose@reddit (OP)
It wasn’t regional. Socioeconomic, probably.
Busy_Fly8068@reddit
Nah — the weird juices came in a can. You want pear juice? Nectarine juice? Grandma is getting the can.
SoTiredYouDig@reddit
I was waiting for this comment. Whenever we’d visit, my grandma would have this can, and black and white cookies.
Busy_Fly8068@reddit
Either you are Jewish, you grew up in an area with a bunch of Jewish delis, or both.
SoTiredYouDig@reddit
Oy vey, what gave it away?
Busy_Fly8068@reddit
Those cookies!
DDrewit@reddit
This can predates Xennials.
wildmaninid@reddit
Same can our cheez balls came in.
riverrat1988@reddit
Naw dig, 1988 here and we were opening Hershey chocolate sauce with them bitches
totorowrowrowmyboat@reddit
Right?! And pineapple juice and that weird off brand apple juice.
justadude27@reddit
We’re just too dumb to figure it out, unfortunately.

RedDawnWlvrines@reddit
I wish they could replicate the metal taste to add to the bottled Hawaiian Punch
TyCrassus@reddit
I have vague memories of vending machines in the 80s that sold juice in plastic "cans." Had a tear strip you had to pull off around the top of the lid.
cleverburrito@reddit
Calling that "juice" separates us, too lol
johnvalley86@reddit
Okay I never had Hawaiian punch in a can but we always had a can of Juicy Juice in the fridge
WaveCave420@reddit
1990, I remember juicy juice cans and Hershey's chocolate syrup in a can. Had to puncture them with that sharp hand tool.
OregonMothafaquer@reddit
I still drink pineapple juice and use these multiple times a week
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
I'm a Generation Jones and we weren't poking cans after maybe the age of 10 (early 1970s).
BlackshirtDefense@reddit
This should be Five Alive.
Significant-Rush-129@reddit
THIS as well as the cylinder of frozen orange juice your mom would always have thawing on the sink.
CanadasManyMeese@reddit
I was born in 89 and im pretty sure most apple juice came canned like this till the mid 00's.
Grave's or Allens (though i believe allens was sold longer)
Kuros_Of_Sindarin@reddit
I was born 86 so technically I don't think I'm xennial despite identifying with almost everything on this sub. This post is another great example, I had a lot of juice (especially pineapple) out of these bad boys.
Username524@reddit
Hello there, samesies and I made my own flair lol;)
Shdwrptr@reddit
I’m also 86 and although I wasn’t old enough to open these juice cans I have very distinct memories of them being opened when I was a child
flyinthesoup@reddit
And I'm '80 and I've never used one of those things. I actually didn't know what they were for until I saw my grandma use it, when I was a somewhat older kid (8-9 y/o?). Before that I only knew the ones that have two gears that you put the can edge in between and you hand crank it to open the whole lid. That's what my parents used.
tessaractIXI@reddit
Same. 88 here but I identify with almost everything in this sub. My parents were behind times, and also held on to everything and then handed it down. So I was basically living a decade behind others my age, who I was also quite isolated from.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
Welcome!
three_s-works@reddit

"Juice"
H3llm0nt@reddit
Ecto cooler from the can 🤌
SomeoneHereIsMissing@reddit
In the province of Québec, we still do that with maple syrup cans.
Active_Yellow_1573@reddit
I think miss these
jsm85@reddit
How the fuck can people drink this anymore? You just stay thirsty. Least satisfying drink ever
RolandMT32@reddit
I recall a movie I've seen where someone has a can of juice like this (at least, I think it was juice) and they attach a spigot to the top, which pokes holes in the top and stays attached so that they can more easily pour the juice out. I don't remember what movie that was though.. I feel like it could have been National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (his cousin & family), but I tried searching online & it didn't come up with that one.
stonhinge@reddit
I couldn't tell you the movie, but those were oil can spouts before they started using plastic bottles.
nrettapitna@reddit
In college, our house mom called it "red death". It was the favorite drink.
characterfan123@reddit
The movie Nothing But Trouble had a better solution
Oil can spout
Exact_Friendship_502@reddit
Your moms bought juice that wasn’t powder?
stopatthecatch@reddit
Strawberry Quik powder. Just ate it with the spoon that I used to open it. No milk needed.
_high_plainsdrifter@reddit
False. I remmeber doing this to Ecto Cooler cans in the 90s.
sneakyfish21@reddit
I’m firmly in millennial range 1989 and also grew up with juice like this, might be a product of being lower class though.
mapped_apples@reddit
Nope, did that as a millennial.
billyjoelsangst@reddit
That shit hit different
Interesting_Rich_826@reddit
This existed in the 90s lol
El-Viking@reddit
We're absolutely the generation that went from using a church key to "I'm not buying these beans because I'll need a can-opener".
CemeteryWind213@reddit
I swear Ectocooler came in a can, too.
smellmyfingerplz@reddit
I remember drinking kern’s apricot juice as a kid in the 80s with cans like this lol
ClifftonSmith@reddit
I have always wanted to open a beer with a church key. Alas, its only been pineapple, orange, apple juice and that sweet sweet nectar from Hawaii
demonspawn9@reddit
That can plus 7up meant there was a class birthday party.
AngryAlien21@reddit
Millennial here who still remembers opening his ecto cooler this way
Waas507@reddit
IDK what the cutoff is but born in 87 and I remember this shit. Great Grandparents on both sides still had rotary phones when I was a wee lad. Even called 911 once cause it was the only phone number I knew at like 4.

Oof I can taste this picture.
spicy-radicchio@reddit

ShitPostPerfected@reddit
You think millenials didn't have to poke open juice?!
Dr_Aquafresh_99@reddit
I was thinking about the grape Hi-c in a can. I remember how good it tasted when my mom would pull it out of the fridge, pop it open, amd pour inlt in to our cups.

No... I was born in 1994 and even I still remember these.
cyberdude419@reddit

killervirgo@reddit
Were we suppose to open the can and the pour the "juice" in another vessel?!
Moon_Noodle@reddit
Born in 88 and this (as well as canned chocolate syrup and frozen juice concentrate) were absolutely prevalent. Now, ask my younger millennial siblings, and they’d likely have no idea. And my singular Gen Z sibling? Not a chance hahaha

First of all, I had to reread that first part like 5 times. My brain kept going to poke juice, which I found a disturbing concept.
But no, I’m a millennial and I have no recollection of that Great Depression ass shiiiiit.

I showed this to my spouse who is 9 days older than me. Totally didn't know what to do with that tool and I was shocked. I used them to punch holes on condensed milk cans to blow out some of that sweet sweet syrup on French bread rolls for breakfast...
4x4Welder@reddit
I've used them, but can't remember the last time I even saw one.
We also splurged and got the frozen juice or powdered juice most of the time.
RadTimeWizard@reddit
Pineapple juice, in a one gallon tin can, after school in latchkey.

Hate to be that millennial but I had these growing up. This what my mother got from food banks for my sugar lows when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 8.
EvergreenHulk@reddit
I have a scar on right index finger from sticking it in that hole and getting it stuck. One of my earliest memories.
BeefModeTaco@reddit
I remember having to open the can of chocolate syrup the same way, and of course the big can of Ecto Cooler.

I'm 35 and remember juicy juice in the cans, it also tasted different once in bottles
Pitiful_Ad2397@reddit
Naw, my very solidly millennial (88) also had to do this.

I’m pretty sure I still have one of these in my utensil drawer. And sometimes a can of pineapple juice or orange juice still slaps.

“Yall want some fresh juice” - my grandma as she was pulling a god knows how old frozen can of juice concentrate from her second fridge (and the third one in the garage had the ice creams and sodas)

The aluminum makes it taste better! Bonus points if it's warm and you drink it from of those wax paper Dixie cups with the yellow and brown flower pattern!

My grandma and I would clear a big can of tomato juice in a single morning. Miss her so much.
Pasadenaian@reddit
Sorry, before my time.
Scared-Pomegranate84@reddit
I'm a millennial and I had to do this as a young lad. It lasted longer than you think. Juicy juice, Hawaiian punch, and v8 where still cans for awhile when I was a kid
amyjrockstar@reddit
Yeah, my 25 yo friend came over to make drinks together & I gave her the task of opening the pineapple can. I set this opener on the counter for her, but when I turned my back, she found & used the full can opener on the lid. We all died laughing. I'm like, how the hell am I supposed to pour this now? 🤣 The next summer, she forgot & did the same thing. 🤦♀️ After the 4th summer, she's finally got it down. 🤣
CunnyMaggots@reddit
Lol I only use a little bit of evaporated milk in my coffee so i still use that little guy to punch open the cans.
Haraldr_Hin_Harfagri@reddit
I think of Nothing But Trouble every time I remember opening the juice with one of those 🤣

And chocolate syrup. I was just talking to my wife about Hershey's syrup in a can a week or so ago.

thisquietreverie@reddit
I see your churchkey and our youth and boy scout camps agreed, but like judge Alvin Valkenheiser, our jungle juice required the use of oil can punch spouts.
PIG20@reddit
It's funny to me that it wasn't strange to poke two open holes in this can and then just leave it exposed in the refrigerator. Anything could start growing or fall into the can and we'd be none the wiser. Just grab the can and pour.
EffectiveFormal2823@reddit
The metal made it taste better
lakebistcho@reddit
Back in 2012, a dude in Seattle started a beer company with cans that needed to be opened with a church key. I thought for sure it would take off, but it closed pretty quickly.
