Eye don’t think so…
calviore94@reddit
The eye ball is such an Easter egg, it’s so out of place and it’s like a video game dev put it there just for fun
Open_Economics632@reddit
Straight the fuck up
stuckinthewalls@reddit
where’s downtown dfw 🤒😵💫
Horns8585@reddit
I would have preferred that to painting over the whales.
selfiecritic@reddit
How absurd yet so true
The eye is a relative staple of Dallas that I’ve never heard anyone else from Dallas ever mention
scottamiran@reddit
It was purchased by the owner of the Joule. It was in Chicago for a while before Dallas.
aksitop@reddit
I 34MOregon.I Grew up in DFW, and this is the first I've ever heard of it (eyeball).
FunPersonality1240@reddit
Interesting. I lived in Dallas for a decade and knew about the eyeball but had never heard of the whale wall.
crooke86@reddit
Same here, I'd seen the whales but nothing that made it any more remarkable than any of the hundreds of other murals around town. The eyeball was certainly more prominent.
Emergency_Basket_851@reddit
Me either, same amount of time, but I think that's because it's been covered in advertisements for most of the last ten years.
SonderEber@reddit
Same. Never knew of the whale wall, and I’ve lived here most of my life. Known of the eyeball for many years.
komark-@reddit
Same here. Lived in Dallas 15 years now
Thesinistral@reddit
Opposite for me.
dethspawn666@reddit
I actually discovered the eye drunk at like 1am wandering around downtown Dallas a few years ago lmao
brycewit@reddit
Same. Was just starting to be a regular at Frankie’s lol
dethspawn666@reddit
I never even lived over there lmao
holymotheroftod@reddit
It's eye-conic
TX_Farmer@reddit
A must for sightseeing!
Upper_Television3352@reddit
But it’s spherical.
Darkvoider_96@reddit
SPHERICAL!
TechnicolorViper@reddit
And yet it still contains cones.
Liberteabelle1@reddit
Hahaha
kissys_grits@reddit
My mom talks about it a lot, but that’s probably because she lived across the street from it. It’s no Pegasus, though. 🥴
gillandred@reddit
The other eye is in St. Louis.
SanchoPliskin@reddit
I only learned about it last week when I went to a restaurant near it. But also only learned about the whale mural when I heard it was being painted over.
glooble_wooble@reddit
It’s funny too because when it was being installed in 2013-2014 ish people were so mad about it. There were articles calling it the eyesore of Dallas.
billctx@reddit
One of the legends is it was installed just to tick off the neighbors when a building permit for a parking lot was denied as an eyesore.
AWL_cow@reddit
They should paint a big whale on the eyeball
MickyFany@reddit
the whales had faded and wasn’t up to par anymore. the original artist should have offered to repaint it years ago
Horns8585@reddit
I agree that they had faded, but being painted over for a soccer event was not the best option.
builtlikebrad@reddit
Maybe, I’m trying to be optimistic, after the World Cup the artist can repaint it
the_orange_alligator@reddit
That’s what I’m hoping for. I have my doubts though
Busy-Ad2771@reddit
That thing was 30 years old wasn't it? Soo the artist is like 50 at least right? Idk abt you but artist is old now and prolly won't be able to do a work on such big of a scale.
LankyYogurtcloset0@reddit
The whaling wall painting is one of hundreds of paintings the artist created worldwide with the idea of promoting marine conservation. It was also a gift to the City of Dallas. The artist, Wyland, will be turning 70 years old this July.
Dallas, as a city, doesn't seem to have an understanding of preserving any of its history. With a few exceptions. The Dallas High School was refurbished into an office building and the Old Parkland hospital was refurbished with other buildings built in a similar style around it to create a business park.
When Hard Rock Cafe closed on McKinney Ave years ago, the church that housed the restaurant was demolished soon after. The fear was that the church would be classified as a historic building which would restrict any demolition of it. It would be, in some opinions, a waste of land and office space.
Dallas is not known for preservation. It's known more for Big Business because making money tastes precedent.
I have no doubt that City Hall will be demolished so that new buildings or venues can be erected. That's the Dallas way.
Fub4rtoo@reddit
I think he’s already said he wasn’t.
Perky214@reddit
Why would he, when we treated his work this way?
Fub4rtoo@reddit
Agreed
jraymcmurray@reddit
Another great example of Dallas choosing public outrage over a simple curtain.
daweinah@reddit
Especially since it had been temporarily covered without issue in the past.
3-DMan@reddit
Or they could have just thrown a banner over the whales
footjoe5@reddit
The eye of Texas is upon you.
mulatto-questioner@reddit
The traveling man needs a soccer ball too.
Leading-Tap-2033@reddit
Fuck that! That is another artists piece of art you twat!

sickomoad@reddit
Came across this on accident, and you can already imagine my "WTF" reaction. Its just very "Un-Dallas"
Fwog_King@reddit
Let’s stop painting over things maybe
BadJanet420@reddit
It's privately owned. So I guess it's up to the owner on what to do.
hoverbutton@reddit
Had to scroll way too far down to see this.
Rumor is, the owner of the plot proposed to build a parking garage on the site when the historic building that occupied it was torn down in 2012. There were complaints it would be “an eyesore” so he brought the giant eyeball to live there instead.
nickseamonster@reddit
Urban myth. Not true.
Few-Sir-8688@reddit
Dallas should have left this a historical building is what they should have done.
Fuck this eyeball and fuck FIFA too.
zuqkfplmehcuvrjfgu@reddit
I don't get the eyeball hate. It's a really unique piece of art and something that draws attention. The eyeball is instantly recognizable and I love seeing it whenever I'm by it.
Montallas@reddit
The story I heard was: the owner of the Joule Hotel across the street purchased the property with the intention of building a parking garage there. The city wouldn’t allow it as they considered a parking garage to be an eyesore and blocked permitting. So, as a big FU to the City, the owner purchased the statue to make an actual eyesore. Mission accomplished imo.
nickseamonster@reddit
This isn’t true. Source: me, who works for Headington, the owner of The Joule.
Montallas@reddit
Just the story I heard. What’s the real scoop then?
nickseamonster@reddit
Sorry, this was me. No idea why it put that handle on the response.
Legitimate_Aspect768@reddit
Nothing so scandalous. Demolished the building without a real game plan just because it was falling apart and we were worried about safety. Realized once the building was down that it created a nice vista from The Joule. Decided to beautify it and add a placemaking element to enhance that vista while we decided what to do with it long-term. Love it or hate it, we had no idea it would become one of the more recognizable & photographed areas of Dallas. So now we're in a bit of an awkward position in terms of what to do going forward. That's the short of it. A parking garage on that site would be incredibly inefficient... wouldn't make financial sense.
juugbuussin@reddit
Used to work for the owner of the Joule. I can confirm this. That’s why his parking garage is two blocks away. The dude is actually alright considering that he’s an oil tycoon. He’s put a lot of money into “reviving” downtown Dallas.
emcd0424@reddit
Tim Headington for those wondering.
Really interesting you worked for him. I know his brother really well. His brother is one of the kindest individuals I’ve ever met. Ive never met Tim but I can imagine that he is down to earth since he really likes to keep a low profile.
juugbuussin@reddit
He really is pretty down to earth. Real genuine guy. I don’t want to say anything else at risk of accidentally doxxing him, but I really have nothing but positive things to say about him. He’s definitely earned my respect.
crawdad1757@reddit
That makes me like the eyeball even more honestly.
Montallas@reddit
I don’t particularly dislike the story, or the eyeball - but I do wish that the historic building had been preserved. That being said - I was going to pay to preserve it so I can’t really complain!
crawdad1757@reddit
Hahaha oh yeah, for sure. The historic building being preserved would have been the ideal situation
glooble_wooble@reddit
I think originally the intent was to restore it but that it was in such disrepair it was impossible. Of course, that’s if you believe the story.
nickseamonster@reddit
This is absolutely true. Wanted to preserve but chunks of the facade were literally falling off the building onto the sidewalk below. It was unsalvageable.
ohkokokay@reddit (OP)
I tend to agree with this. Tim Headington has done a good job salvaging buildings and art up and down Main Street. The Joule and the rescued Millard Sheets mosaics hanging inside the lobby that were going to be destroyed during the Mercantile renovation. Drakestone, Commissary, etc. I think he would have saved the Praetorian Building if it was possible.
glooble_wooble@reddit
I think it may have been that he bought it with the intention of gutting the inside for retail/parking and restoring the facade. My personal opinions of oil barons aside, Tim Headington has spent a decent amount of money and effort facilitating the preservation of architecture and art in Dallas, I agree. He owns the Lumen as well, which has sculptures made by the same artist that did the Traveling Man in Deep Ellum.
sportsarestressful@reddit
It's the veins. An eyeball? Fine. A veiny bloodshot eyeball? Gross.
MarcoEsteban@reddit
They are referring to the fact that the eyeball replaced Dallas's oldest building at the time and one of very few that was still standing built in the 1800s.
International_J@reddit
You mean the abandoned building that was in decay for decades?
Apprehensive-Taco406@reddit
There was an excellent Donut Palace there till they tore the building down. Melt in your mouth donuts at 7:30am. A true treasure.
Jericoholic_Ninja@reddit
Exactly, the only thing original about that building was the frame. There was nothing historic left to save.
Terrible_Law6091@reddit
We use to have homeless fights in there.
Winner gets $10 and a fifth of Jack!
Man, you brought me back
Ok-Chair527@reddit
I can’t even find a photo of the building
LuckyLoquat4660@reddit
And it enjoys seeing you!
Southern_Landscape24@reddit
I don’t like it because it’s hidden and on private property and no one talks about that. I would feel more of a connection to it if I could actually walk up to it, or even on the grass. It’s just pointless and it a part of the community
BigBirdLaw69420@reddit
Yeah! I miss the Spread Eagle.

Stedlieye@reddit
Painting a mural in Dallas for FIFA is like advertising after you’ve already made the sale. Even if you ignore the destruction of public art. It was still stupid.
Intelligent-Read-785@reddit
FIFA, bah! An international crime organization the manages to scam people in a way that makes it the envy of Cosa Nostra
Informal-Loan-4793@reddit
Imagine walking around downtown at night and suddenly making eye contact with a 20-foot eyeball.
SeniorEvent3290@reddit
Love the idea. I'm all for it.
johnnyclash42@reddit
Grew up here and was in high school at booker t in downtown when the whale wall went up. It’s an absolute tragedy that a corporate cartel run sports event is painting over it. The eye is great too. I love the events that happen at the eyeball and in general, it’s a unique sculpture that brings some vibe to downtown, imo.
Xenophore@reddit
“Downtown DFW” — what is that? Arlington?
Far0nWoods@reddit
A running joke after someone accidentally referred to Downtown Dallas as Downtown DFW. It’s been repeated ever since. Just go with it.

Big Town should have been designated an historical building. That place was a monument to Mesquite history and culture. (Im only slightly kidding)
savannah31401@reddit
I remember buying my first set of big girl luggage there at Montgomery Wards. I still have it. And the dinner at Woolworths next to the fish.

dfwrandomgirl@reddit

iwillsumday@reddit
I feel like I’m going to going to get downvoted for this, but fuck it,
I’ve lived in north Dallas and the northern suburbs for 30+ years, and I just found out about the eyeball in like 2023 and didn’t know about the whales until they got painted over.
I’m not saying they are worth less because I didn’t know about them, I just think it’s interesting. It makes me wonder if somehow Dallas just kinda sucks at promoting its art.
Then again, I avoid downtown like seemingly everyone else does (based on how many businesses have left downtown) so maybe it’s just me. I know a lot of sculptures and murals in DE…
HuckleberryLou@reddit
I lived in Dallas proper (downtown DFW?) for a many years and am into art/art history/etc.. neither the whales make mural nor eyeball were super on my radar. Neither are specifically associates with the city “culture of Dallas” quite like the Chisholm Trail bull mural in Sundance Ft Worth or like the Shuttlecocks sculpture on KC . 🤷♀️

The Hilarious "Local Legend": The eye is situated on a private, grassy lot owned by the nearby Joule Hotel. Local lore suggests the billionaire hotel owner purchased and placed the sculpture there after neighbors blocked his plans to build a parking garage on the site, claiming it would be an "eyesore." The giant Eyeball was placed directly on the lot, pointing straight at the hotel, as a permanent, sarcastic "eye-sore".
Apprehensive-Jelly79@reddit
Tim Headington owns alot of stuff on main street including the joule hotel which is where the eye is… he wanted to build a parking garage where the eye currently sits but the city of dallas said that it would be an eye sore! So thats why Tim put a giant eye ball there and keeps the whole area around it locked most of the time and just opens it for special events
