Were Americans this anti World Cup in 1994?

The USA hosted the World Cup in 1994, the year before I was born. Most people in my country (Perú) have either neutral or positive feelings about the U.S. and a ton of people, myself included, will be traveling to your country for the World Cup. But one thing I’ve noticed is that online Americans (and to a lesser extent other English speaking people like Canadians, Great Britanians, Australians, etc) are very negative about the USA hosting the World Cup this year. This is extremely strange to me as my people would be beyond elated to host such an elite internationally beloved event.
Was it this negative in 1994?

I haven't met any Americans irl who are anti world cup. Most people I know wanted to go until they saw the ticket prices

American anti-FIFA right here. I don't care who wins games of any sort, professional or otherwise - but I do enjoy watching soccer. However, FIFA can get fucked and so can the World Cup.
Unknown1776@reddit
Yeah people are more Anti FIFA as an organization then anti World Cup. Between ticket prices, being notoriously corrupt, and the whole FIFA peace prize for Trump, most people have a bad opinion of them.

As an American, I don't know what you're talking about. I haven't heard any Americans being upset about hosting the World Cup. I understand that the world's Media is convincing their audience that traveling to America means being hunted for sport by ICE, but that's just not true.
Maybe there's some soccer fatigue because we also hosted like three other international tournaments last summer, but I'm just guessing.

The vast majority just don't care. It's soccer. Even for those that like sports ball, it's not one of the top 3. So unless you're in our city it's irrelevant.
Nozomi_Shinkansen@reddit
Fewer people in the US cared about soccer in 1994.
My preference is it be hosted somewhere else, somewhere where people actually care about soccer. Sure, there will be some revenue from tourism, but the cost of hosting the games and the distraction that goes along with it aren't worth it.

It's the political climate. We shouldn't be having people from all over the world coming here when our government is threatening them, and as someone who lives near where the World Cup will be taking place in the US, we are very concerned about ice coming in and terrorizing our communities.
Quiero_Mimir@reddit (OP)
Who is your government threatening? Do you mean the Iran?
AdelleDeWitt@reddit
No they have openly threatened people who are coming into the country to see the world cup. They have said they'll be looking closely at visas and putting people in prisons if they don't trust them. When you're threatening visitors, you shouldn't be allowed to have visitors.

We aren't anti-world cup. We don't think people from other countries should come here when the risk of ICE arresting, detaining people for months on end, and deportation are all on the table. It is abysmally stupid to come watch a game here right now. It doesn't even matter where you are from. They are arresting people with accents, people with legal travel visas, people of color. They should have moved the World Cup to a place where the people coming to see the games will be safe, because that place isn't here.

The issue is that Americans in general do not care about the world cup. If you are seeing posts by people who live in host cities they are likely just annoyed at the prospect of more traffic in addition to the normal amounts of summer/construction traffic. Those of us who don't live in a host city most will not think about it until it is on TV when we might watch some of the more important games.
Roam1985@reddit
No, it wasn't this negative in 94.
We were significantly less xenophobic in the 90s.
We also were significantly less hateful of every other subculture of US citizen besides our own in the 90s.
But now you're going to the land of hatemongers that the US has been unrelentingly since the mid 2010s.
morosco@reddit
Most Americans probably don't even know the World Cup is here, many of those who are are suspicious of FIFA corruption and FIFA's connections to Trump. So it's not really a thing to celebrate.
Wheatcattle@reddit
People generally don't like big tourist events that cause traffic problems, especially when the host country isn't going to win a thing.
SoutheastBeerTravels@reddit
I doubt 98% of Americans actually care. You're just seeing a very small group of people on social media
