Health system in Budapest in 2026

Hi,
I’ve just received a job offer in Budapest and I’m seriously considering moving there. I know Hungary is currently going through quite a few changes politically and socially, and one thing I’m a bit concerned about is the healthcare system.
At first I probably won’t have private insurance, so I was wondering if any foreigners here could share their experience with the public healthcare system in Hungary. I don’t speak Hungarian yet, although nowadays with ChatGPT and Google Translate I guess communication is easier than before 😅
I know no public system is perfect I’ve been living in Spain and I’m already used to waiting hours sometimes, but I’d really appreciate honest feedback about:
- quality of care,
- access to doctors,
- language barrier,
- and overall experience as a foreigner.
Thanks a lot!

If you can afford private care its pretty good. If you cant than god save you from getting sick

Well, why don’t you speak the language?
Hungarians moved to America and married the richest man in the world the next week (Zsa Zsa Gábor), or founded Hollywood studios like Paramount and Twentieth Century Fox.

Are you offering free Hungarian language courses?

Of course not — just as no one was offering Adolph Zukor free business startup lessons, and that didn’t prevent him from creating a company worth more than some countries’ entire GDP.

There's an intermediary step that many people take. Basically, there are places like FirstMed that offer annual plans with basic coverage for yearly exams and such in Engligh. But they will also act as an intermediary between you and the pubic health care system. It's worked well for people I know who are healthy...and some who've navigated cancer diagnoses and a lot in between.

It will likely take years, heck decades for Hungary to properly change their healthcare system that has been absolutely starved since the Soviet Union collapsed. I very recently had extensive medical problems and was told by multiple doctors and nurses to go back to Germany because they can’t help me further. Took doctors 30 minutes to fix what they couldn’t manage for 8 weeks causing me to go into sepsis.

As a Hungarian quality of care and language barrier can range from really bad to pretty good. It really depends on which hospital or doctor you get. Waiting times depend on the specialization and can be quick or years.
