You left us, CJ. You let the hood fall apart while you were living it up in Liberty City. You ran away from your problems! You're a coward!

People in poverty will very often try to bring people down with them. When you try to better your life they'll take it personally as if you're above them for trying to have a better life. Since black culture has been historically shaped by poverty, you end up with a big issue of black parents being unsupportive of their sons moving away or starting college or doing anything really. When they go back after becoming succesful a lot of black young adults will face criticism for "turning their backs on the family"

Rural white people do the same. They look down on their college educated kids moving to big cities rather than staying in their small towns.
Shonnyboy500@reddit
That’s pretty different, they’re typically still very supportive of college, just not moving away. They want their kids to be successful nearby, not successful far away
RandumbStoner@reddit
I grew up in a small rural town, they definitely do this.
It's so bizarre too, my friends parents did exactly this. She left her family business and moved away for college and her parents were PISSED that she would have the audacity to go to college and not work the family business.
Fast forward 15 years later and she is doing very well and the family business is closed down.

I grew up in a small rural town, your single specific example does not speak for all rural towns. First of all, family business makes things different. If you want to say families with small businesses do this, sure, I wouldn’t argue with that, but rural homes in general? I know no one who was not given support in going to college. Most families had college savings for their kids from a young age, and those that didn’t still supported them.

My 2nd favorite part of Zootopia is how they invert this trope, Judi's parents are sad to see her go but are incredibly supportive despite being afraid of the big city ("do you have your fox spray?"), and then give her a gentle landing place when she comes back after initial failure, without big "I told you so" energy.
PotatoesAndChill@reddit
So are you saying that the Zootopia implication is wrong, and in reality rural parents don't support their kids moving to the city? Sorry I'm a bit slow today.

Honestly a lot of the issues people say are because of race just end up being a social class thing.

Sweet DOES have a point. CJ claims to love the Grove, yet as soon as Sweet isn’t there to hold him to that, he bails.
Sweet doesn’t go about explaining it as best he could, but he doesn’t need to, CJ already understands, and Sweet knows he does.
TKRAYKATS@reddit
Sweet only knew the gang, only Grove, Carl goes to Liberty City, Kendl go with Cesar and did some business, Sweet stayed in the hood, for the hood
Sweet is just a man that want to keep what is the more important to him, and since he's a gangsta, he can't show his sadness or anything

This and Franklin's story are unironically very accurate. Franklin is treated as an asshole by his peers for wanting to do more in his life while they all leech off of him. Hood culture is toxic.

There’s a reason Rich and famous black artists/ athletes don’t return to their roots
kyngslinn@reddit
Haven't played GTA V in a decade, but didn't Franklin and Lamar have a similar conflict?

Crab bucket mentality.
Lest anyone turn this into a racism thread on my pictures-of-pointy-tailed-kittens app, i'll point out that white people do the same thing, in the form of "colleges indoctrinate you into liberalism" banter.
Like, my bröther in mayo, education and meeting new people does change your views of the world, yes. Also if college is about successful indoctrination, why havn't Charlie and the Grifters™ started a conservative university that indoctrinates into conservatism while pumping out engineering and nursing degrees? Why is it only "liberal cuck" universities that can graduate people?

His Mom was killed, so he came home for her funeral. A bunch of other shit happened.
Anon, as usual, is a larper.

I think the greentext was about the last missions where CJ returns to LS after travelling all over San Andreas and working for the government. The mom's funeral was long before that point

Idk if that was the point but yeah Sweet has a bad reputation for not being able to leave the hood behind
