Mid Devon has a yellow thunderstorm warning with zero precipitation expected. How does that work?

Having a discussion at work about it and we don’t get how it works except for dry lighting.

Thunderstorms without rain aren’t uncommon
ab1794@reddit
Fleetwood Mac lied to us
banwe11@reddit
As did The Corrs
monkeyspanker86@reddit
What caused the landslide?

But they were only sweet little lies.....
IAmAshley10@reddit
But The Prodigy did say ‘I hear thunder but there’s no rain’
Mackem101@reddit
Told some little lies.

This is what caused the divorce

Ok, go your own way.

They are in the UK
feckarse-drinkgirls@reddit
Literally called "dry thunderstorms"
Predictably they cause a lot of wildfires
glasshomonculous@reddit
A wise woman once told me that thunder only happens when it’s raining though.

Hello Mid Devon residents.
It’s great to finally have you on the internet!
You can search for advice using a website called Google.
You cannot take down those flying metal birds in the sky by chucking spears at them.
Kian-Tremayne@reddit
Also, please consider dating some of the people from the next village instead of your cousins. They’re not as bad as you think they are.
Able_Resident_1291@reddit
If you can have dry ice I don't see why you can't also have dry lightning
Fun-Brush5136@reddit
You can have black ice too, does this mean we can have black lightning?
hdhxuxufxufufiffif@reddit
We definitely have White Lightning. I used to buy it from the Spar and drink it in the park with my mates after school on a Friday.
Fun-Brush5136@reddit
Sounds familiar. It went well with THUNDERbirds
MuntyCatt@reddit
White Lighting! Just thinking about it sends a shiver down my spine, it was terrible, but it did the trick.
Dimac99@reddit
You could buy Black Lightning from Vincent between 1948 and 1952.

Im sure hes a comic character.

Clouds in sky with thunder but no rain. We had that yesterday in Bath, for about 30 mins then it was raining sideways for 10 mins.
brightdionysianeyes@reddit
Bristol we had thunder for half an hour and absolutely no rain at all. Bloody tease.
Johnlenham@reddit
Oh interesting. We are 20mins from Bath and we had thunder but no rain atall. Disappointed
Negative_Equity@reddit
I had to drive up to Yate for work and set off as it started. Got to Hicksgate roundabout and it was bone dry. It was very localised
GlitchingGecko@reddit
Same in the Midlands, although we got the rain for close to an hour afterwards.
Husband chose the wrong time to walk the dog in shorts and a t-shirt; came back looking like he'd been through a car wash.
BroodLord1962@reddit
Electrical storms aren't that uncommon
FireFingers1992@reddit
Can confirm, had thunder off the Devon coast this afternoon for sure, but no rain.
papercut2008uk@reddit
Look up Thunder Cloud.
Used to see it all the time in Pakistan, Huge dark clouds with lightning striking inside the clouds. It happened over here during the lockdowns too. I remember enjoying watching the clouds flashing in the sky.

When life brings you thunderstorms, make scones!
OmegaPoint6@reddit
The location of isolated thunderstorms can be very hard to forecast accurately, so they can predict a wide area that might get them but not the specific area. So wide area gets the warning without the local forecast being impacted

Thanks

/u/frontroomhog this is the correct answer. Everything else is nonsense
External-Praline-451@reddit
We had it this morning, one clap of thunder was so loud it was almost like a sonic boom. Scared the bejesus out of me!
Ancient-Awareness115@reddit
We had thunder yesterday and then an hour later had rain
Lickonmydick@reddit
Same. I wish it helped more with the heat in doors here.
Ancient-Awareness115@reddit
Definitely it just ended up hot and wet here
Kaiisim@reddit
In a dry thunderstorm the precipitation is evaporated before it hits the ground.
So the same process occurs in the clouds, causes rain to fall, but there is a layer of hot dry air that reabsorbs it.
LaurenNotABot@reddit
It happens a lot.
We had it last night and lunch time today.
Massive thunder that shook the windows but not a single drop of rain
painful_butterflies@reddit
Brace yourself for science.
There'll be a storm, but it won't be wet.
You're welcome.
Crunchie64@reddit
Thunder isn’t wet.
mousey76397@reddit
Nor is water.

Happens a lot in the states. Was fascinating watching it when I was over there. Don’t know the science behind it, but was cool either way.
