What is a reasonable quote for half a load and 2 miles journey for a Man with a Van (outside of a big city) It's been a while, since I've had to do it. But, quotes seem to be pricey?

Find a local Facebook classifieds group and ask in there for a man with a van. Ideally show pictures of what is to be moved or be able to give a clear idea of how much stuff so how big a van is needed.
The price seems fair for a proper professional company with all the insurance and blah blah blah. If you have the money worth doing especially longer journeys.
For tour situatikn and budget you need Dave who has a van and will do it as a quick little earner on the side. Have everything ready, load it yourself and unload to the curb and they are gone. Flexibility on the when (evenings and weekends) can also help. Cash in hand obviously.

Hire a van without a man? If you can't drive, perhaps a friend could? Or even an acquaintance who'd do it for £50 or whatever.

Fifty quid? If someone asked me to do a days work for them for what would amount after costs to be probably about £8 an hour I’d tell them to piss off back to 2005
LaidBackLeopard@reddit
Sounds more like a morning's work to me.
craigus17@reddit
Maybe it is, or maybe it’s carrying a fridge freezer and a three piece suite up four flights of stairs.
LaidBackLeopard@reddit
Seems unlikely if they're a lodger...

If you think moving someone’s house for the cost of a meal for two at TGIs is such a good deal then send them a message saying you’ll do it 😂

£150 sounds cheap.
It would cost you £100 to hire a van and do it all yourself.
Around £200 is normal.
£300 for a premium service.
It’s likely a whole day of work even though it’s local to you, they have to get to you, load, drive to new location, unload, get home, pay for fuel, insurance etc.

Also make sure your quotes aren’t just for kerbside delivery. When I did removals work there one price for kerbside, another price for ground floor, and another price for stairs. I had a customer once who booked a kerbside delivery through my agent (AnyVan) and then got very upset when I refused to take their belongings to their third floor flat unless they paid the premium.

You're paying for two guys for half a day each plus the insurance and convenience of them owning a van. If you want to do it cheaper hire a van and drive it yourself.

I was recently quoted between £200 and £400 for a 75 mile one-way single van delivery (obviously the transport company had to do both ways). Pick somewhere that's on the route between the start and end points to minimise 'wasted' miles.
Tough ask for a 2 mile transport though.
craigus17@reddit
Yeah the mileage isnt the part that costs. They probably have a set price for the first ten miles and then £1/mile thereafter or something similar The price difference between moving house 2 miles and moving house 20 miles would be virtually negligible
carlovski99@reddit
Yeah the distance is kind of irrelevant here, until it gets to more than an hour's drive. As is the fact your aren't totally filling the van.
HawkwardGames@reddit
A lot of what you’ve said is irrelevant to the cost. The main issue is the actual move, the distance, and the amount of stuff being transported. On that basis, £150 sounds very cheap.
craigus17@reddit
It’s one of those things really where you’re not necessarily paying for someone else to do it, you’re paying for the fact that *you can’t do it yourself*
Besides that this seems very reasonable when you take into account that diesel is creeping towards £2/litre, goods in transit and public liability insurances are not cheap, road tax, vehicle maintenance, etc etc etc, plus the guy(s) actually keeping some money for themselves as a wage. £150 sounds *suspiciously* cheap to be honest, and I’d question if the person who gave you that quote has goods in transit insurance.
CriticalCentimeter@reddit
Its not just the 2 miles is it. It's the getting to you and the loading too.
_Verc1ngetorix_@reddit
Doubt you'd find anything cheaper than £150
